After several shifts of the delivery date for the new international terminal building at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, the Federal Government has finally fixed October for the commissioning.

Managing Director/CEO, Federal Airports Authority (FAAN) Engr. Saleh Dunoma, at the sidelines of President Muhammadu Buhari’s inspection of the ongoing construction work at the terminal, said the terminal will be ready by August, but commissioning will be sometime in October, 2018.

“We are pressuring the contractor to finish in August, so that we can start operations in October and all the stakeholders are working together to ensure this happens,” he explained. He expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done, adding that the train station would be linked to the existing domestic terminal for seamless movement of passengers.

Dunoma said the airport when commissioned, will have several facilities including two modern multilevel car parks, a shopping area, among others.

“There is more work going on within the airport because there are two car park buildings to be constructed on both wings of the terminal. There are so many things to be done, but between now and October when we plan to start operations in the new terminal, even the new road network would be completed,” he said.

The new international terminal under construction by the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC) is with a loan facility by the FG from the Chinese government.

The Abuja airport is one of the four mega airport terminals being built under a $600 million loan facility from the Chinese government. Others are in Kano, Port Harcourt, and Lagos. The project was fraught with challenges that threatened to cripple the facility.

The Minister of State Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika, had lamented last year that the terminal in Abuja was not linked to the old structure, with no apron space provided. He had noted that even if you remove the fire service from there, you would only accommodate at best one large-sized aircraft. He had also complained of the sewer system, power supply, and the control tower that was blocked by the terminal building.

Based on the above issues, Sirika had said then, that “even if the terminal building is complete, it will take time for them to become operational.” He also assured that government “will do everything possible to put them to use as soon as possible”, without stating how early.
That assurance appears to have been addressed, as the Managing Director of FAAN said the issues have been largely addressed.

On the relocation of the control tower, he said: “It has nothing to do with the terminal building, but those issues are going to be handled in the next stage. And that will not stop us from using the terminal building.” On power, he said government has approved for an independent power supply for the airport.

On water supply, he said the Minister of the FCT has instructed that the airport be connected to the city main water supply system. “By October, they will all be functional and that is when we will start using the terminal building,” he said.

Our correspondent, who went round the facilities, reports that most of the equipment and facilities are being installed while some are being test-run, like escalators and computers.

Facilities being provided at the terminal include modern carousels, at least six of them; large check-in counters with self check-in facilities, premium lounges, about ten boarding gates, wellness centre, shopping area, duty free shopping, cafes, hotel area, escalators, lifts, and food court, among others. The building is also being linked to the existing terminal building, though it has already been linked to the airport’s rail station.

When the facility is commissioned, all international flights will move into the facility while the existing terminal will only serve domestic operations. When this happens, the congestion at the airport will be eased, with user experience improved.

Additionally, when the national carrier, Nigeria Air, begins operations, the facility will be used as its major hub.

Carry on Your Excellency Hon. Minister Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

You are 1 of the best things that happen to Nigeria.

Where they fail you are succeeding.

They could not do Abuja Kaduna Rail but you did it.

They could not do Lagos Ibadan Rail but work is on going day and night.

They could not do Abuja Metro Rail but in collaboration with fct ministry, aviation ministry, you guys did it.

They could not do Abuja airport new terminal building but your junior minister Hadi sirika under the supervision of Ministry of transportation did it.

They could not do Onitsha and Baro port, today you completed the two and they will be inaugurated next month by Buhari.

For 30 years they fail to renew the abuja airport runway but in 6 weeks Minister of Aviation at large Ministry of transportation not only build new runway but also award contract for second runway.

I can go on and on but let me stop here.

Anyone who says Buhari is not working must be living in Jupiter but definitely not earth

Recall.

Nigeria approves construction of 3,050MW Mambilla electricity project at $5.7 billion - August 2017

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, disclosed this while addressing State House correspondents alongside the ministers of labour and employment as well as the minister of sports, on the outcome of the Council’s meeting.

“The memorandum from the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing was to the award of the Mambilla Hydro-Power plant. I believe that many of you have heard of this project.

“Nigeria started talking about it since 1972; that is about 45 years ago.

“Several efforts had been made to bring it to reality but I’m happy to announce that this government approved the contract today to joint ventures of Chinese Civil and Engineering company for the engineering and turn-key contract, including civil and electro-mechanical works for $5.792 billion.

“The construction should take about 72 months (6 years),” he said.

PoliticsYour Son Has Returned - Tejuoso Makes U-turn As Buhari Meet Senators In Villa by FriendNG(op): 1:09am On Jul 26, 2018
Sen. Lanre Tejuoso, who Senate President Bukola Saraki announced that he left the All Progressives Congress, APC, for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Tuesday returned to APC on Wednesday.

Mr Tejuoso, representing Ogun Central, announced his return at a meeting between APC Senators and President Muhammadu Buhari at the Aso Rock on Wednesday night.

While introducing himself to the President, he said: “Mr President, your son has returned home.”

Also at the meeting was Senator Adesoji Akanbi, Oyo South, who Mr Saraki also claimed had joined the PDP. He emphatically denied the list of defectors as dubious the following day, saying he remains a member of the APC.

His showing up at the meeting with President Buhari affirmed his faith in the APC.

Senator Shehu Sani from Kaduna, who has been blowing hot and cold about his political allegiance was also at the meeting, exchanging banters with his colleagues.

Those attending the meeting included Sen. Adamu Aleiro, Bala Ibn Na-Allah, Aliyu Wamako, Ibrahim Gobir, Kabiru Marafa and Abu Ibrahim.

Others were Kabiru Gaya, Barau Jibrin, Abdullahi Gumel, Ahmed Lawan, Ali Ndume, Abubakar Kyari, Baba Kaka Garbai, Aliyu Abdullahi, David Umaru and Abdullahi Adamu.

Sen. George Akume, Francis Alimekhina, Andrew Uchendu, Magnus Abe, Ovie Omo-Agege, John Enoh, Nelson Effiong, Andy Uba, Sunny Ugboji, Hope Uzodinma, Ben Uwajimogu, Yusuf Abubakar and Oluremi Tinub were also in attendance.

Other senators in the meeting were Gbenga Ashafa, Solomon Adeola, Tayo Alasoadura, Ajayi Boroffice , Yele Omogunwa, Fatima Rasaki, Olanrewaju Tejuoso and Yahaya Abdullahi.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, believed to be hobnobbing with the PDP, was among those who were not at the meeting.

With Tejuoso and Akanbi and Sani now firmly identifying with the APC, the party has now increased its majority in the Upper Chamber to 54, enough to dictate the direction of policy.
