ELDER statesman and former Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Richard Osuolale Akinjide (SAN) believes that the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has made a mortal error in the choice of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu as its flagbearer for the coming presidential election.
Chief Akinjide is not alone. His views were shared, somewhat, by some other prominent Nigerians who, in separate interviews with Sunday Compass yesterday declared, pointedly, hat the election will be a walk over for President Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan.
Those who made the submission included the National Chairman of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), Maxi Okwu, and former Petroleum Minister, Don Etiebet.
The view was also shared by former Information Minister, Chief Alex Akinyele.
They spoke with Sunday Compass after reviewing presidential aspirants across political party lines in preparation for the coming election.

Chief Akinjide, in a telephone interview with the Sunday Compass said that Jonathan would, “undoubtedly, win the election” and that Ribadu should have sought a ticket to the National Assembly.



He added: “He (Jonathan) is the best of them all. He is the one Nigeria needs at this moment. He is patriotic. He has got enormous experience, and will unify the country and the people.
“At this stage of our growth as a nation, the political leadership of Nigeria should not disappoint the people and the international community. We should present our best materials forward.
According to Akinjide, the PDP candidate is not in the class of Ribadu, a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, candidates of the ACN and the Congress of Positive Change (CPC) respectively.
He said, “Jonathan is not comparable to the other candidates like Ribadu or Buhari. It is like the difference between a people coming into a fight with an elephant and the other party coming with a tortoise.
“Ribadu should have gone to the House of Representatives or the Senate. He is not a material for a Vice-President. I won’t even make him a governor.”
Also, the former Minister of Petroleum, Chief Don Etiebet, said that the emergence of Jonathan has broken the barrier of ethnicity in Nigeria.
He said, “God’s time has a come in Nigeria. Now we look at the candidates, not where they come from. This was clearly demonstrated with the way the PDP conducted its presidential election where a candidate from the far South got elected by delegates from the far North.
“I envisage that Jonathan will win. He has shown capacity more than any of the other candidates to reach out to the various parts of the country and that is very important.
“At least for the first time in Nigeria, things are beginning to happen the normal way. President Jonathan appointed the chairman of the INEC, Attahiru Jega, without having met the man before but because he merits the job. That is important. If we start to do things that way in Nigeria, then we should expect a greater country in the recent future.”
In a similar vein, Chief Akinyele, said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), should be commended “for organising such a very peaceful and epochal presidential primary election.”
He said, “What the PDP had done has never happened before in this country. The Nigeria of old was where people voted along ethnic lines. But if you see what happened with the PDP primaries, it is obvious that we now have a paradigm shift in the politics of this country and suddenly it does not matter anymore where a candidate comes from. The PDP should be commended for that.
“ Jonathan will win definitely. Not because of the power of incumbency. But he has a very rich strategy team and because of his youthfulness.
“He is able to reach every corner of this country and that is very commendable. He also represents the new Nigeria because ethnicity is not longer a factor in Nigeria’s politics.
“The situation now is a radical departure from the practice in the past. The PDP should be commended because the party has put to account, its ability to organise a peaceful presidential election primary.
“I am not a member of the PDP or any political party for that matter, but when a party is doing the right thing we should commend it.”
CNPP’s National Chairman, Maxi Okwu, gave the April contest to President Jonathan who, he said “has a heavy advantage over others.

That's where you're wrong. If your analogy is true then how come Atiku did not win the PDP primaries. GEJ has opened the nyash of the north. Contary to the popular belief that the North wield so much power. It's actually the PDP that has the power. So, irrespective of where you come from. As long as you can find your way in PDP, the rest is history.

Like i said already, Atiku stepped on so many toes as VP.

And the North hasnt forgiven him for his transgressions.

Look, dont get carried away with GEJ winning the primaries. OBJ is the unseen hand in all of this. No OBJ, no GEJ.

Truth is bitter

No one has ever become the president of Nigeria without the support of the North. When i say North, i mean the small educated cabal that hold the key to the gate of Asorock. It is simply impossible to become president without sicking the Sultan's kondo. It is just impossible.

We Yorubas understand that very well. Reason, why Tinubu selected a Northerner as the flag bearer of ACN. To rule the country, you just have to be seen as a friend  of the North.

You just witnessed a minority candidate (GEJ) winning LANDSLIDE throughout Nigeria, and you fail to see the message inherent in it.

Well, well, if we have to go there , we will. the only message I saw in the last PDP primaries is that he who pays more, gets the vote
I also learnt that contrary to what GEJ would have us believe, uncle Sege is still very much in-charge
I also learnt that the North is an unforgiving bloc, that as along as one of their own, I mean a core northerner, is not involved, they are not as forgiving of disrespect of their Icons as the other groups.

And knowing OBJ, and looking at his antecedents, from 1979 & in 2007, GEJ is handing over to the North, undoubtedly. It might not be Sambo specifically, but definitely, power is going back to the North,

For me, I learned that lesson in 2007 when Obasanjo simply tossed Atiku (a man who made him politically) to the dogs and simply picked a sick Yar adua. That is part of why Jonathan is president today.

What happened to Atiku would not have happened without the support of the Northern Oligarch. Atiku stepped over the line repeatedly and he was made to pay for it. If Sambo plays ball, he is abound to take over from GEJ.

You guys are still underestimating the power of a sitting Nigerian president. Obasanjo was all the lesson I needed, and GEJ just reconfirmed that lesson.

Well I really dont see why you are comparing OBJ with GEJ. GEJ paid is way to victory, of course, with OBJ and some powerful people from the North behind him.

If GEJ wants an Igbo to succeed him, he will pull it off.

It is not impossible for an Igbo candidate to succeed GEJ, but it would not be GEJ calling the shot. It is however going to be difficult to find an Igbo man acceptable to the North to lead the country. Ekwueme was SE's best chance, followed by Okadigbo, but both are dead. Nnamani seems likely, but not in 2015.

As for Sambo, he has two choices. Either he continues on as VP to the chosen Igbo candidate, or he will not get the support (if GEJ chooses an Igbo to succeed him). The Nigerian president was made this powerful by the 1999 constitution designed by the northern oligarchy. They never thought it could work against them. Well, here we are.

Hate to break it to you, Sambo is being groomed to take over from GEJ. Like OBJ said, the nigerian system should mirror the American system where Governors are picked/groomed to become presidents. And in this context, Sambo was picked  just so he could eventually take over from GEJ. Ever wonder why GEJ picked someone from the NW?

I have maintained that if Ndigbo are serious about succeeding Jonathan, it is very easy!

It is easy, but not that easy. the biggest factor mitigating against the Igbo candidacy is the dearth of comptenet and acceptable candidates. The North that refused to allow Abiola, a muslim and supposed ally, become president because they could not trust him as  a Yoruba man would find it difficult to allow an Igbo man mount the saddle of leadership. Any Igbo man aspiring for that post would have to pledge allegiance and loyalty to the North first of all. And I dont know, as of now, any detribalized  Igbo man  that would be acceptable to the rest of the south, let alone the North.

Are we not Nigerians? Are we not the only zone that has least produced a Nigerian head of state?

Igbos are Nigerians, but not Nigerians enough. They still need to do more to convince the rest of the country that they can be trusted with power. It is not just the North that is wary of Ndigbo, the SS and SW are apprehensive as well.
