theenchanter: u're very correct sir. but the salient question remains.... Why should demand for dollar be high in Nigeria? We don't spend dollar and only few people engage in import and export. So why the cause? Don't you think the increased allocations to state Governors may be largely responsible? There is too much naira in the system held by state Governors and other politicians and some of it probably finds their way in bulk to the parallel market. So no matter the rate, these guys can buy to save for politics and other things. This is what I suspect. Naira supply in the economy is huge chasing same amount of dollars as before or even slightly fewer. This is why I don't know what Cardoso can do at the moment. |

chrisooblog: Well said unfortunately Emilokan is behaving as if the presidency fell on him in error. People are getting more agitated by the second and they won't be patient with him for even one month because of the biting inflation at the moment. Well I don't know what they can do about the naira again for now except they monitor the increased allocations to Governors since fuel subsidy removal to see if they find their way to the parallel market for exchange of dollars. But even that is the job of the media and EFCC to investigate. Who or what can save the naira at this rate? I simply don't know. I warned against floating the naira even when Buhari was president because I know that while floating was good, there are structural issues and foreign investors wouldn't just rush in immediately because you floated. People just propose these liberal policies without looking at the issues in totality. So yeah you are right. Tinubu should take some of the blame for the fast decisions but slow planning. |

chrisooblog: Honestly it beats me that we're still doing d**k measuring contests on top the same time wahala we're in. I would think Ghanaians would be more humble considering how their country's government have been defaulting on bond payments. Nigeria as bad as we currently are we pay our debts. I swear. They seem to think their Government performed some kind of magic in 2022 to stop their currency slide then. It was simply because they pushed forward most of their interest payments on debts as recommended by IMF which gave the Govt some breathing space and indeed the currency. IMF package also gives investors confidence normally to buy more of that local currency and bring in the dollars. Nigeria can raise Eurobinds today at once and dollars would flood the market but this is like postponing the problem into the distant future and incurring more foreign currency denominated debts for the future. What Nigeria would do is sell assets of NNPC, sell some electricity assets. sell the refineries and these talks are ongoing but are medium term solutions not short term solutions. We need some short term solutions aside Eurobonds. Nigeria would also need to do something about crypto because 56 Billion dollars from Nigeria went into crypto in 2022. We need to integrate crypto somehow. Finally BDC's have to be reduced to only a few licensed ones at the airports. Naira cards should become fully functional for FX but with limits. |

vaxx: I understand you will fall back to population . But of course, should I show you the social programs in Borno, Lagos, and Kaduna by state Governors which I know of? You won't hear of it because the media and Nigeria only care about what the Federal Government does for the most part. The Federal Government have their own social packages since the 1970's but they are failing at most of them now partly because of corruption and partly because we are now around 200 million people. So comparing Ghana with Nigeria on social welfarism is rubbish. We don't practice thesame system of Government. |

An ordinary Ghanaian is under govt support. Health insurance, free education to the secondary level , A slightly higher minimum wages . Many inhabitants of these states are also under some form of social support by their state Governors. |

predictor1: If only Nigerians could do what the Kenyans did. Ruto did exactly the same things Tinubu did, removed subsidies, increased taxes, etc. But Kenyans took to the street every Wednesday until Ruto caved in. Kenyan currency bounced back because they issued a Eurobond (to be due 2031) to offset their 2 Billion dollars debt that was to be paid in June in order to avoid default. This brought confidence to the market and things would definitely calm down from now on there. Nigeria can issue Eurobonds too but this is not the right time because of relatively high U.S interest rates. Nigerian CBN have not pumped in the normal dollars it pumps into the market everyday in the time of Emiefele/Buhari and haven't even pumped in anything at all since September until last week where they released a paltry 86 million dollars which was like a drop in the ocean. The demand is high. If you put dollars at 2000 naira today, many Nigerians would still afford it and are ready to pay. |

Celestialsword: The Dollar is not the problem but reliance on foreign currencies for imports Well there's reliance on foreign currency for imports because most countries want to export in dollars to grow their reserves. Even Nigeria wants to export oil and cocoa in dollars. All countries want dollars because they want to boost their reserves with it. They want to boost their reserves with it because it is a stable and strong currency. |

Almost all countries have “exempt surplus” (“ES”) when it comes to funds repatriation to parent companies. Even some have extra level of taxes to discourage you moving such funds and keeping it local.
The only qualms I would have with this new CBN guidelines is the inconsistencies it creates in the markets. Businesses love stabilities in rules and regulations especially when it comes to finances. Cashflow is a big deal and lots do have multi year projects that such funds finance. To have such changed in such a short time the rules is just the only issue. Why is that? I know some would disagree but...I have always seen them as average players to be honest. I don't think we really need them and they need to actually show more. It's just like I evaluated Esther Okoronkwo from that friendly tournament in 2021 (where they all played). When they are, they will make commercial banks and some big players the only entity to exchange dollars...not those principalities called "bureau de change".
The real corruption is in banks. If banks can make maira scarce by not loading their ATMs aagainand using POS via money exchangers in the streets, then, they can do it to dollars too.
Govt knows what to do, but is not ready.
Just imagine the amount of money Wigwe the guy who died in a chopper crash accumulated. Look at his mansion. Lol. Cecilia Ibru did so many bad things in her bank in those days. Erastus Agbola too destroyed so much. These bankers and major players like ex-Gen Danjuma, Dangote, Otedola, Adenuja, and many other billionaires are the reasons we are suffering. Na corruption.
They know what to do, but won't do it.
Naira is gonna crash further. And my prediction is that Bola Tinubu will be booted out of that seat soon. He will soon be disgraced if he doesn't sit tight. Time to remove the BDC's. License only few of them to stay close to Airports (even these ones should get their dollars from CBN directly). Make Bank cards work and just put limits monthly. |

Kenochi: Education is very important,I want to encourage everyone to google the products that Dangote Refinery wants to export and its uses After that, you can come to a conclusion whether it is something that we use in Nigeria and what level of usage is there in Nigeria
Some of us have always insisted that there are more than three products from Crude Oil,and this only justifies our stance. This brings me to the NNPCL and it's management for the past 20 years. What did they do with our by products for the past 20 years when they had this rubbish swap arrangements What did the money for fuel oil, naphtha, propylene, carbon black and other byproducts disappear into
As for Dangote Refinery, this is another big short coming in our nation.A big Oil producing country whose leaders refused to set up Industries and take advantage of their God given blessing They were busy subsidizing petrol and allowing conmen to destroy this country The chicken has come home to roost, and everyday we keep seeing that we were just producing leaders who were not willing to take the long road to success but were always comfortable taking short cuts that led to nowhere In all of this I blamed Yar Adua the most. He reversed some of the things Obasanjo did in his second tenure. |

DeLaRue: 'Upgrading units' - I guess that's for petrol.
So the refinery may not produce petrol for a some months yet. Hmm.
Someone from abroad told me yesterday that Nigeria will not benefit much from the refinery. My immediate interest was in another topic we were discussing so I didn't really press him to explain why he thought that would be the case.
But thinking about it now, I think the government will just end up paying same old subsidy to Dangote as the current pump price of around N650 is not going to cut it. Subsidy is here to stay.
So we are back to square one, with the only advantage being that the government will not be buying the petrol from him in dollars.
If Nigeria's wahala is too much, the man may even decide not to sell to Nigeria.
O ti lo o For Government to do this subsidy thing without stress, PH and Warri refineries have to come alive. Govt can then dictate the price by pegging both PMS and diesel at 350-500 naira. The new oil swap agreements would be with our local refineries. But the price to pay is smuggling to Benin republic and petrol queues. This is where Dangote would make up for the rest but he should be allowed to fix his price. |

When there was no insecurity, how much non oil export did we do and how long would it take us to resolve the problem? I'm not sure you even know what you are talking about. I'll just compare Iwobi to Ajibade (positional-wise) The thing is unlike Iwobi, Ajibade would never be told to play such a role in midfield when we have Abiodun, Christy, and Halimatu. This is one of our strongest areas but not the case for the super eagles. |

ThaThinka: It's interesting to see that many people liked this opinion.
I still don't understand how a policy of this sort would be hailed while there's still disparity between official and parallel rates, giving room for round-tripping. You would do better fighting the corruption.
And what gave you the impression that corrupt people in government and financial institutions won't still corner the foreign currency received and take it to the parallel market again?
Imagine getting your USD proceeds converted to Naira at N1513/$ yesterday, only to wake up today and found that the rate was N1565. Have I lost or gained? Mind you, USD would still be needed for some important international transactions.
As to the bold, your idea of taxing domiciliary account balances could be very counter productive. That's like saying savings account balances should be taxed! Such a move could discourage people from sending foreign currency to their accounts in Nigeria, unless they have an urgent need or the economy stabilises.
I remember years ago when I was making regular, low hundreds of dollars online, a similar policy as this was introduced. My USD earnings were converted at a rate like N100 or more lower than the parallel rate and N50 or more lower than the official sell rate.
That meant if a $100 incoming payment got converted to N33,500, I would need N38,500 or more to pay for a $100 transaction online. Needless to say that I stopped receiving money to local accounts. So what should the Government do? Without this policy, how do we receive foreign remittances into the official channels? |

Looks like someone did copy and paste with this economic policies! If as you say you export nothing, then how do you defend the naira? If you can't defend it well because of lack of dollars then you widen your black market while you keep it at one rate. You have it at 450 and your black market was around 750. |

Jessyjeff: When Obasanjo took over in 1999, crude oil price was about $30 per a barrel. Later in the years of his administration, prices improved but it was not over $70 per a barrel.
Learn your history and stop being fed propaganda by a clueless APC government.
Obasanjo and his team were just damn good in managing the Nigerian economy. It's not about price but the production of crude oil. We were doing 2.2 million bpd with enough foreign investments. Today we just increased it to 1.4 million bpd for the first time since 2021. NNPC only has about one third of that at the moment and even most of it have been sold already during Buhari era and recently also to collect loans. That's why we can't even supply Dangote. So price is not the main factor here. |
