•Co-ordinator, Conference of Islamic Organisations, Alhaji Shuaibu Abdullahi (left) and former Chairman, Lagos State Muslims Welfare Board, Professor Tajudeen Gbadamosi, at a one-day seminar of Muslim leaders in South-West organised by the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), South Western Zone in Lagos recently

Jihad is an Arabic word whose root is jahada, which means to strive for a better way of life. Other nouns are Juhd, Mujahid, Jihad, and Ijthad. The other meanings are endeavour, strain, exertion, effort, diligence, and fighting to defend one’s life, land and religion.

It should be stated here that the highest degree of Jihad in Islam is when a person is making struggle against himself. He should not allow himself to commit any crime, any assault, or any type of ill doing against the law, the society or the environment. A Muslim who already submitted himself and his loyalty to God (The Creator of the Universe) has to try his best to control his ego, his lusts, and his selfishness.

He should be humble, amicable, and friendly to all irrespective of colour, nationality, ethnic background, gender, language, creed, position or religion. A Muslim is that person who walks and behaves like an angel on this planet. He is to take care of poor, the needy, those who are out of jobs, and those who are homeless. He is to sacrifice his time, money, knowledge, wisdom, effort, energy and all other capacities in order to please God, and harmony among themselves. This is considered in the Book of God as a true Jihad.

Anyone who makes Jihad against himself is to be rewarded by God in this world and in the hereafter. One has to make sure that while he is making Jihad against himself; his intention should be for the love of God, and for the sake of making people happy, healthy and safe. He should never brag about his sacrifices; and he should never exploit people at all, otherwise he would be the loser in this world and in the hereafter. PS: For more references one may read the Qur’an (3: 142); (22:78); (29:6); (29:69).
Jihad is not a war to force the faith on others, as some people may think. It should never be interpreted as a way of compulsion of the belief on others.

Islam prohibits terrorism, kidnapping, and hijacking, in peace and in war when carried against civilians. Whoever commits such violation is considered a murderer and is to be punished by Islamic State. During wars, Islam prohibits Muslim soldiers from harming civilians, women, children, elderly, and the religious men like priests and rabbis; it also prohibits cutting down trees and destroying structures.

HOLY WAR
The term Holy War is not an Islamic terminology. The only Holy is God, the Creator. His words are Holy. As far as war is concerned, there is nothing in the Qur’an or even in the teachings of Islam, which indicates that Muslims should wage a war at all. Moreover, it is against the teachings of Islam to practise what is called Holy War. This action is not at all from Islam. It is a borrowed terminology from the Crusades.

Indeed, the Crusades of the Romans had used this terminology and applied it in action. They considered the local people in the Middle East as infidels. It happened that those people of the Middle East were Christian and Muslim Arabs. Even those Christians did not accept the Crusaders as their leaders. Hence, the Romans had to get the verdict and the blessings of the then Pope to wage a tragic war against the Middle East people. They considered the local Christians and Muslims as Infidels.

In order to raise enough money to buy ammunition, they started selling croissant in their local churches. They thought that the croissant is the symbol for Muslims, i.e. crescent and star. This was not true of course. Muslims do not worship the moon. They worship Allah (The Almighty) alone. Their pledge of allegiance is only to Allah, the Creator of the whole universe.

At that time the Crusades killed 200,000 local people in the Middle East. Similarly one can say that the Inquisition in Spain was carried by the Francos against the local Muslims, Christians and Jews. They killed 10 million Muslims and 4,000 Jews. Those acts of terrorism were done in the name of their religion. However, Jesus was innocent of their terror, and Christianity and other Christians of the world are innocent of their crimes and atrocities. It should be stated here that the local Christians of today have nothing to do with the Crusades or with the Inquisitions. No one is to be blamed for someone else’s mistake in the past history.

Therefore, Islam is against Holy war. It is against killing innocent people. Qur’an stipulates that whoever kills one person it’s as if he killed human beings at large; and whoever saves the life of one person it’s as if he saved the lives of all people on this planet. Moreover, if someone tries to create commotion, disturbance and hate among people so that they may start war, he is committing a big sin, which is bigger than killing humanity at large. Hence, Muslims try to live in peace and harmony with all people of the world without exception.

Tell my brothers, I died well - Slain Borno pastor

Late Orji He was captured by members of Mohammed Yusuf’s Boko Haram sect, along with many other Christians. Like many others, he was murdered in a gruesome manner, but he held onto his faith, till his last breath. James Bwala reports the tragic story of late Pastor George Orji.

AS the Goodnews Church of Christ in Maiduguri, the Borno State Capital mourned and remembered the late Pastor George Orji, testimonies from Christians within and outside the church, who were caught together with the pastor by members of the Boko Haram, the notorious Islamic sect of Mohammed Yusuf, showed that Pastor George Orji died singing and praising God after preaching to Mohammed Yusuf and all who were in the camp, in which the religious fanatics kept their victims,

In an interview with some of the abducted persons, Nigerian Tribune learnt that even though some of the captured Christians were forced to accept Islam, they were not set free, as most of them were reported to have been killed by the same people who forced them to accept Islam.

Mr Thomas Ali, one of the victims, who managed to escape, told Nigerian Tribune that he was kidnapped by the Mohammed Yusuf sect and was forced to take a bath as a sign of accepting Islam. He said he could not really describe how he escaped, but vowed never to forgive Mohammed Yusuf for the trauma he went through during the six hours he stayed in the camp, where people were brought in and slaughtered like chicken.

He said: “It was an unholy situation, and I wonder why the so-called human rights organisations were worried about the killing of a man like Mohammed Yusuf, but not about the hundreds of people that were slaughtered like chickens for refusing to denounced their faith.

“The security agents that were caught and brought into the camp were slaughtered as if they were not human beings. Mohammed Yusuf and his men were not human, they are animals, and people should not be deceived by their religion. If Islam is like that, then Islam is a fake religion.”

Another lucky victim, Mr.Emmanuel Ndah, who was abducted along with Pastor George Orji, said that they were arrested by Mohammed Yusuf’s men when they went to check on a widow at her home in the State Lowcost area. According to him, when they were abducted, they were taken to Mohammed Yusuf’s camp and were asked their names.

“When we told them our names, they realised that we were not Muslims, and asked us whether we would denounce our faith and accepted Islam, but Pastor George encouraged us not to accept Islam, but rather to hold unto what we believed in. He was singing and praying all through, and encouraging the believers not give up, even unto death. It was his words of encouragement that kept us till the time we were released. However, the men killed so many of us Christians who had even been forced into Islam. I cannot not say how I survived it, but I did by the grace of God,’’ he said.

According to him, “While we were laying there, tied up, Pastor George turned to me and said, ‘If you survive, tell my brothers that I died well, and am living with Christ. And if we all die, we know that we die for the Lord.”

While giving his testimony, one Okechukwu Nwankwo, who witnessed the killing of Pastor George Orji, said that he was actually abducted with all the members of his family, and was forced to bathe and accept Islam, which he did under duress. He said luckily for him, he was asked to leave and while he was looking for his wife and children, that was when he saw them dragging Pastor George Orji.

He said,” They dragged him far away from the camp, they forced him to bend his head as he passed before Mohammed Yusuf. He was singing and praising God and praying; I saw them deal him a matchet cut from the back of his neck, and he fell down. His body was dragging on the ground and it rolled and rolled for a long time before he finally gave up the ghost.’’

If comments in the condolence register is anything to go by, then, Pastor Orji did not die in vain.

‘’With the death of Pastor George Orji, a life in the service of God and humanity, which was as rich and fruitful as any in the whole history of the Good News church as an organisation, has come to an end. The church will always be indebted to late George Orji for the removal of the obstacles to our faith. He gave us the picture of a world with a unity and harmony surpassing the boldest dreams of the past.’’

“Indeed, the breadth of late George Orji’s views and the openness of his mind found most remarkable expression in the very same years when he gave a widened outlook to the preaching of the word. The same spirit that characterised Orji’s unique way of preaching the gospel also marked his attitude in all human relations. Notwithstanding the increasing reverence which people everywhere felt for his attainments and character, he behaved with unchanging natural modesty, and expressed himself with a subtle and charming humor. “

“The late man of God was always prepared to help people in difficulties of any kind. To the whole of mankind, George Orji’s death is a great loss, and for those of us who had the good fortune to enjoy his warm friendship, it is a grief that his gentle smile shall never more seen, nor his voice listened to. But the memories he has left behind will remain an ever-living source of fortitude and encouragement. “

Late Pastor George Orji was appointed as a Pastor by the Good News Church on 25th March, 1999 and posted to the Riverside Church. He served as pastor in charge of the headquarters church from June, 1999 to March, 2004 before his posting from May, 2004 to April, 2009, to the headquarters.

Born to the family of Mr.and Mrs. Philip Orji on 30th June, 1966, at Orokam Village of Ogbadigbo Local Government Area of Benue State, and an Idoma by ethnicity, late Pastor George Orji attended Sabon Gari Primary School Zaria from 1973 to 1978, Mount St Gabriel Secondary School Makurdi from 1978 to 1983. He was the chapel prefect, and served excellently. Late Pastor Orji also obtained a diploma in Ministry in December 1998 at the School of End of Time Ministerial Anointing Food For Total Man Ministry in Kaduna.

The slain Pastor George Orji also attended the Nigerian Institute of Science and Technology, Zaria, and obtained an Intermediate Diploma in Laboratory Technology in 1998. He was at the University of Maiduguri, and studied Science Laboratory Technology, for which he obtained the Higher National Diploma in 2004. He also holds a diploma in Computer Application from Yashib Computers.
Between 2006 and 2007 he was at the ECWA theological Seminary, where he obtained his post-graduate diploma in Theology. Pastor George Orji went back to ECWA Theological Seminary, Jos, Plateau State, where he was pursuing a Master’s degree in Divinity before his death.

He is survived by a wife, Mrs.Veronica Orji, and two children.

Boko Haram: How 3 pastors were beheaded eyewitness
From TIMOTHY OLA, Maiduguri
Thursday, August 6, 2009

One of the victims of last week’s attack by the Yusufiya sect in Borno State has given a shocking account of how the Islamic extremists killed three pastors who were captured along with other victims on the second day of the insurgence. The victim was among those held hostage in Yusuf’s enclave.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Sun in Maiduguri, the eye witness who preferred anonymity disclosed that the three pastors were beheaded on the instruction of the sect leader, Mohammed Yusuf shortly after bringing them out of his inner chamber.

“The pastors alongside one Ibo man were asked to change their faith to Islam like they did to other people taken as hostages. I think there was an argument by one of the pastors which gave the others some level of confidence to also resist accepting Islam.

“The Yusufiya men who were armed on that Tuesday afternoon were not comfortable with the pastors and they took one of them to the sect leader in his inner chamber. They came out later to the courtyard within the compound and cut their heads one after the other and thereafter, shouted allah akbar in wild celebration accompanied with several gun shots,” the eye witness disclosed.

He said the hostages numbering about 50 within the area of the execution of the pastors and another fair complexioned man which he could not identify, were gripped with fear as non could foretell the outcome of their stay at the enclave of the fundamentalists. He was however lucky to escape as he was freed in the night with others with a warning not to mix with kafrici (infidels).

Corroborating the account of the killing, a Senior pastor with Good News Church, Wulari Maiduguri Rev. Baba Gata Ibrahim told Daily Sun in an interview that a pastor in his church, Pastor George Orjih was beheaded on the instruction of the Boko Haram leader because the clergy man refused to accept Islam.
“An eye witness who was also captured by the Islamic militants gave us details of how the pastor was killed. He told us they were persuading him to accept Islam and he said over his dead body. He was even said to have preached Christ to Mohammed Yusuf and that reportedly angered the sect leader who then as he ordered that the pastor and others be killed immediately,” he disclosed.

The late Pastor George Orjih was said to have arrived Maiduguri last week from Jos where he was doing his Masters programme in Theology. Described as a fearless, hardworking, and intellectually sound, his care for the welfare and well being of his family allegedly contributed to his capture and eventual death.
“He was mindful of his family and their welfare. He was really out of the house but thought to go back again. That was how he was captured by the Boko Haram before he was killed. It was the very week, in fact the following day he returned from school where he was doing his Masters in Theology that he was arrested,” the senior pastor added.

He urged the government to provide adequate security for Christian in the state.
Also delivering a sermon during the funeral rites for late Rev. Sabo Yakubu, slain COCIN Church pastor, the speaker, Rev Bulus Azi urged Christians to emulate the pastors who were killed because of their refusal to betray their faith. Quoting from the bible in Revelation 7: 9-15, the regional chairman of the church told Christians to prepare to die anytime as their calling demand. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2009/aug/06/national-06-08-2009-01.htm

Unrepentant impostor re-arrested in Lagos
…Says devil sold the idea to him
By CHRISTOPHER OJI, MATTHEW DIKE, IFESINACHI OBI and SEUN SOJINUGA
Thursday, August 06, 2009

An unrepentant imposter, who disguised as a woman, going about defrauding men, said it was the devil that sold the business idea to him.

The suspect, Uche Okoro, had been claiming to be the Super Falcons skipper, Perpetual Nkwocha, and using same to fleece unsuspecting men of their hard earned money.

Uche Okoro, 19, from Umuahia, Abia State, was alleged to have duped many victims, who usually mistook him for the female soccer star. The suspect was arrested in Lagos sometime ago over similar offence but he refused to quit. After he was re-arrested and taken to the state headquarters Oduduwa Ikeja, Lagos, to face interrogation. The police spokesman, Mr. Frank Mba was inundated with several phone calls from Okoro’s victims.

Each caller had one tale of woes or the other to tell about how they fell prey to the suspect’s antics
A victim, who identified himself as Felix Anabrabra, narrated how Okoro stole his N23,000 and a Nokia handset in a hotel, where he took him (her?) to catch some fun. Anabrabra had mistaken him for a lady.

. The victim told Mba that he met Okoro last month dressed in female attire and introduced himself as Perpetual Nkwocha.

Anabrabra, who called from Port-Harcourt described the imposter to be a striking semblance of Perpetual Nkwocha, saying he had no reason to doubt him.
The victim disclosed that they met at Best Bite Fast Food, after which Okoro invited him to his hotel room in Angis Hotel.

He said in the hotel room, the suspect brought out an album containing photographs of some celebrities, where he posed as a female with them.
The pictures included those of a popular actress, Eucharia Anunobi, Super Eagles striker, Mikel Obi, Super Falcons striker, Perpetual Nkwocha, among others.
Anabrabra explained that after looking at the photographs, he was deceived into believing that Okoro was Perpetual Nkwocha.

He said: “After convincing his guest , Okoro told him he was searching for a life partner as his fiancé, Mikel Obi, had jilted her.”

The victim said the suspect deceived him into proposing to marry ‘her’. “I was happy that Perpetual was proposing to me but at the same time , I was skeptical, as I had nothing to have attracted a celebrity like Perpetual to marry me”.

He said along the line , Perpetual hoodwinked him and succeeded in stealing N23,000 and Nokia handset from him.

A senior police officer from the Ikeja Airport Command, Lagos, was among those that stormed Oduduwa police, where the suspect was undergoing interrogation. He also told how the fake Perpetual was arrested over similar offence in the past.

He said the case was still pending in the court and described Okoro as an unrepentant impostor.
Another man, who claimed to be a receptionist in a hotel at Yaba, Lagos, where he [Okoro] lodged also stormed Oduduwa police to catch a glimpse of the man, who deceived the staff and management of the hotel into believing that he was Nkwocha.

He said: “ She told us that she was Perpetual Nkwocha and that she just arrived from Sweden. We had no reason to doubt him as he was dressed in a female attire”.
The receptionist disclosed how the suspect checked into the hotel and deposited the sum of N8,000. According to him, Okoro said he would stay in the hotel for two days but later abandoned his luggage in the hotel room and left the following day.

The management of the hotel was said to have reported the matter at Sabo Police Division.
The alleged imposter was said to have been arrested at Mushin, Lagos, where he was also impersonating Perpetual Nkwocha.

Unknown to him, he was actually talking to Perpetual Nkwocha’s cousin.
The suspect , who later spoke with Daily Sun said: “I have regretted my action because I now know that the devil does not give good ideas. See the disgrace that I am now subjected to.” Explaing how he super-imposed his photographs in the pictures of the stars, he said, “it is very simple, I did the photo trick in Oluwole area of Lagos. I just told them to super-impose me with the photographs of the celebrities.”

The suspect also claimed to be a footballer, who played for Delta Feeders Football Club. He said he also acted in a movies entitled, “ Oganigwe” and “Angel part 2.”
He disclosed that he usually wore 15 pants to get the shape of a female and tucked in his private to prevent it from being exposed.

Mr. Frank Mba, who paraded the suspect also displayed some of his property recovered from the hotel. Among them was a box containing his female attires .They included, assorted trousers ,blouses, female shoes, hand bags, jewelry, photo album, among others. The police spokesman said the suspect would soon be charged to court.

it i sthe small price you pay for having dangerous cousins.

i said it here before on BA throwing out nigerians thread i saw a nigerian buying mTN  cards at exhorbitant price on board just some few minutes to our landing in lagos when the poor woman asked him for smaller denomination you need to see the fuss the idiot was making as if  someone was hurting him.

we have learnt to take what dont belong to us they have learnt to protect their buiness nothing spoil as my sister would say

Ok, fine.
So these people buy multiple tickets from the airlines and sell to third parties then? Shouldn't there be a tracking device for this sorta thing from the airlines? huh
how do you track fake/ cloned cards and adresses? most of these idiots buy a ticket and travel before the transaction bounces.

banking in this part of the world is mainly done on trust. until say the last ten years i can easily issue you a check of say £1000 and get it paid without sufficent funds becos it was assumed no one issues a check without funds in his account. during the privatisation of govt companies in the 80s and 90s it was an open season cos people could write cheques for subscription for shares they cant afford and get refund from fthe registrars cos they assumed the cheques would clear.

everyone is wising up now

Well, my take on that is: 'IF IT'S GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE GEESE, IT'S EQUALLY DAMN GOOD FOR THE GANDER'.  Men have been doing this and getting away with murder for a long time now and it's only fair women should show them how painful the experience could be.  Only so would men realise the emotional pain they'd caused to all concerned because, infidelity is very destructive.  If women doing it could cause men to change their ways, that's for the best. Enough is enough of these selfish and cruel men who are still doing this to their loyal wives and partners.

By day, firefighter Dean Scott puts out flames in rural western Washington. By night, he tries to kindle them between Reformed singles around the country.

Scores of Christian dating websites (and dating sites that market themselves to Christians) are doing their part to solve the delayed marriage problem by promising to pair like-minded couples. But Scott's SovereignGraceSingles.com hopes to take compatibility tests to a new level, making sure that singles are on the same page theologically.

Singles who build profiles on SovereignGraceSingles answer questions such as, " How have the Doctrines of Grace changed or affected your life?" "Do you have a Quiet Time?" and "Who is your favorite biblical character and why?" Members' usernames include tulips, restingingrace0611, and ReformedSoutherner.

Baylor University professor of theology Roger Olson, author of Arminian Theology, is a bit surprised that the site, which hosts nearly 800 members and has borne 37 reported marriages, is catching on.

"It's an example of a larger dissonance between Calvinist theology and Calvinist practice,"Olson said. "If God has foreordained everything, then why should I feel any urgency to act?"

Scott said he has heard few theological objections to the site since it launched in 2005.

"It doesn't sound very Calvinist, but I think we should use all means possible, including the Internet, to find someone,"said Scott, who met his wife, Karen, on the site he built. I don't think it's antithetical to God's sovereignty at all. It's a means that he's provided to use in the lives of single, Reformed folks."

Paul David Tripp, author of Marriage: Whose Dream?, says Christians of various theological stripes have trouble deciding whether to use an online site to find a mate.

"There will always be questions of the degree to which you should be active and the degree to which you should wait around,"says Tripp, who preaches at Philadelphia's renowned Tenth Presbyterian Church. "There's something problematic about saying, 'I'm going to get married and I'm going to use whatever tool out there.' There's no promise in Scripture that a single man or woman will get married."

At Covenant Life Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland, pastor Isaac Hydoski worries that singles are using online dating sites because they are discouraged.

"Many times, it can be an expression of a last-ditch attempt to take the bull by the horns," he said. "It can be done in a way that's submitted to God's will, or it can be done as an expression of self-sufficiency."

But Hydoski sees online dating, if rooted in pure motives, as just another way for singles to find each other, no different from couples who meet at a church singles' group or a gas station.

"It's not any less significant, less romantic, or more disconnected from God's sovereignty in terms of how you met," Hydoski says. "That's a mistake of Christians over-romanticizing decisions like this."

Lisa Anderson, who hosts The Boundless Show, Focus on the Family's podcast for single young adults, tried online dating and found it a mixed bag. Single and 37, Anderson prefers to seek potential partners in a physical community rather than a virtual one.

"I had friends who found guys who would lay out the Westminster Confession and make you sign it before they talked to you. That spells freak with a capital F," she said. "But on eHarmony, I get matched with guys who aren't believers. When you can go online and sift through profiles like paint samples, it breeds a consumerist mentality."
Anderson believes Christians should think about God's will in dating as they do in other spheres of life.

"You have to apply for a home. You have to look for a career," she said. "The Bible says, 'He who finds a wife, finds a good thing,'not, 'He who sits around and plays Xbox goes to a singles'group where God shines a spotlight on the right woman.' We should be availing ourselves of our community and the power of family and friends."

ChristianCafe.com, another online dating site, has seen 1.5 million members since its launch in 1999. ChristianCafe.com president Sam Moorcroft says, "The pagans are out having a good time meeting someone, while the rest of us are sitting in our closets thinking it's unbiblical. Let's not let the world have all the good dating sites."

FamilyWould Somebody Please Explain My Husband? Take On Why Men Act The Way They Do by GEW(op): 1:46pm On Aug 06, 2009
Would Somebody Please Explain My Husband?
One guy's take on why men act the way they do.
Ron R. Lee

A well-known Christian author and his wife once summed up their relationship in 13 words: "Put us together, and we add up to a fairly decent human being."

I enjoyed their self-deprecating sense of humor, and only later realized they were rephrasing a profound biblical truth: "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh" (Genesis 2:24).

When two people become one, they compensate for each other's deficiencies. If I were left to my own devices, for instance, I'd turn into the Tom Hanks character in Cast Away. But team me up with my wife, Jeanette, the Queen of Sociability, and I turn into a reasonably presentable human being.

While we husbands benefit greatly from being married, we often don't communicate it well. Women are into relational nuances—the meaning behind the meaning behind the meaning. Men basically wonder if there are any more mashed potatoes.

One night, Jeanette and I sat quietly, enjoying ourselves in the corner of a candle-lit restaurant. Then, out of nowhere, she looked into my eyes and said, "Let's talk about our relationship." It always makes me nervous when she says that.

Relationships are usually complex, and guys are pretty basic. A husband tends to think in concrete terms. Instead of pondering his marriage, he'll picture the woman he comes home to at night, the woman with whom he has children, the woman with whom he shares his bed. Call that a relationship if you want, but you'll just confuse your husband.

What else about your husband do you wish you understood? Let me toss out seven things that might help explain a few of your husband's odd behaviors.

1 A man does more talking—and listening—when he's unaware it's happening. Most guys don't overwhelm their wife with deep inner feelings! However, there's a way to get your husband to share what's going on inside. It involves talking to him the same way his buddies do—while doing something else. Men go fishing, watch a ball game, or help each other move a pool table down to the basement. And of course, they talk a lot while they're doing these things.

For Jeanette and me, all it took was building a wood rack together. I got out the lumber and power tools; Jeanette gathered the nails, screws, and tape measure. Amid the noise and sawdust, she told me she was struggling over whether we should make a long-distance road trip to visit her parents. I'd already told her I'd do whatever she decided, but Jeanette needed to talk out the options. While we built a rack to hold our firewood, we discussed the pros and cons. What else could I do? I had to hang around until we finished the wood rack.

Take it from me. If you start doing more stuff with your husband, you'll find he actually has a lot to say. And he'll listen a lot better, too.

2 If a man pauses before answering a question, that doesn't mean he's losing interest in the conversation. Guys really get into it when they're verbally sparring with their buddies, so you might wonder why your husband can't invest that kind of passion in sharing with you.

When a guy "shares" with his wife, he knows his every utterance carries a meaning even he doesn't realize. So he's extra careful about what he says. That explains the frequent pauses.

One night after dinner, Jeanette came back to the table and sat down as I was reading the newspaper. Jeanette wanted to talk about how I was dealing with our recent move. In the months since we'd left the Midwest, I'd been saying how thrilled I was to be living in Colorado. This was beginning to wear on Jeanette, who wondered if I still had a beating heart in my chest.

Finally, I laid the newspaper aside. "I don't miss the weather or the traffic," I told her. "But I do really miss Ed and Joann. We always had a great time when we got together. I hope they'll come visit us."

Jeanette tells me I revealed this sense of loss amid several pauses. She resisted the urge to hurry the conversation by guessing what I missed most. She told me later her patience paid off when I finally indicated I was hurting about some of the people we'd left behind.

(Note to any husband reading this article: If your wife sits down at the dinner table after the meal, lay down the newspaper. That's one of those silent signals we're supposed to pick up on.)

3 If your husband likes to hang around the house, he's actually paying you a compliment. Here's one way to tell if your husband thinks your marriage is going well. He won't work late unless he absolutely has to, and he won't overload his schedule with meetings and golf dates with his buddies. The reason? He'd rather be home with you.

Sounds good so far, right? But let's say you've had a terrible week, and as Friday approaches, all you can think about is getting out of the house for a quiet dinner and maybe even a movie. You can picture the restaurant, taste the appetizer, even smell the popcorn at the theater. But your husband gets home from work on Friday and all he wants to do is stay put. Before you take it personally, remember that if he wants to hang out at home, it doesn't mean he doesn't want to do something with you. It just means he wants to do something with you at home. I realize a steady diet of staying home eventually will drive you up the wall. But for now, take it as a compliment. Maybe next Friday he'll have more ambition.

4 When your husband's a little short with you, 9 times out of 10 it has nothing to do with you. Some things that really bug your husband are taxes, bills, his boss, and the ever-present threat of male pattern baldness. For me, the most frequent low-level life stress is automobile-related. Our cars break down with unnerving regularity.

One afternoon, Jeanette called me from work to say that when she pulled into her office parking lot, steam poured out from under our van's hood. I picked up some antifreeze, several jugs of water, and headed off to her office. Sitting at a red light, I made a mental list of what causes coolant to leak: a cracked radiator or heater hose, a bad water pump, or the worst possibility—a blown head gasket.

By the time I arrived at Jeanette's office, I'd worked myself into a lather over the likelihood this repair would drain us financially. That means I wasn't all smiles and affectionate greetings when Jeanette walked out to meet me. As I poured antifreeze into the radiator and watched a new green pool form on the ground, I asked Jeanette to follow me to the repair shop. Then I took off down the street.

Here's the significant thing about this story: Jeanette didn't take my fit of pique personally. She understood I was angry at the situation, not at her. (Now to any guy reading this: It was the head gasket. It set us back $1,800.)

So if your husband acts less than chummy and you wonder if it's something you said, think about what else has happened in his life. He probably had some huge, last-minute project dumped on his desk that afternoon. Or maybe he just opened the mail and looked at the VISA bill. You, he loves. The credit card bill he'd gladly burn at the stake.

5 The words husband and hint don't belong in the same sentence. I maintain there's a perfectly good explanation for why guys are clueless. It's because wives like to hint around at what they mean; then they wonder why their husbands aren't responding.

Take last Thanksgiving, for instance. Jeanette and I had a houseful of guests, some of whom were watching football in the family room. Being a good host, I figured I'd watch it with them. Just then, from the kitchen, Jeanette said, and I quote, "Ron." She used that tone that means I'd messed up—without specifying the infraction.

"Should I feed the fire?" I asked. That wasn't it. "Do you want me to help you get the dishes out?" Not that, either. "Is it time for me to take drink orders?" Wrong again. Finally, I hit on it. "You don't want me to watch football while other guests visit in the living room, do you?" Bingo! At last I'd guessed correctly. But it would have been less frustrating if Jeanette had just said, "I don't think you should watch football while the other guests entertain themselves in another room." If she'd uttered those words, I would have caught on. Honest.

6 Many men are clothing challenged. Forget those immaculately attired GQ guys; a chimpanzee would look great if he had a team of trained professionals picking out his clothes, too. Assuming you're married to a regular guy, chances are your husband suffers from a combination of fashion blindness and ensemble dyslexia. Sometimes we freeze up. Does this tie go with this jacket? Are these socks black or navy blue? If I wear the pink polo shirt, will other guys start asking me out?

I have a friend who had to make a big presentation at work, and he wanted to make a good impression. That morning, he noticed a new sweater hanging on his side of the closet and was overcome by a wave of gratitude. His wife, realizing the importance of this presentation, had been thoughtful enough to buy him a really nice sweater.

He wore the stylish garment to work, gave the presentation, and came home to tell his wife about it. She listened attentively, then asked, "But why did you wear my sweater?"

I'm not saying guys are clothing idiots; I'm just saying we can use a little help. If it weren't for our wives, we'd be giving people the fashion willies every time we left the house.

7 A guy likes to put disagreements behind him. Most guys think there's only one proven method of making up after an argument, and that involves getting physically close. My friend Michael speaks for a multitude of husbands when he says that as soon as the fight's over, physical contact with his wife helps him feel things are once again okay.

"I don't carry grudges," he says. "But Susan's different. When we strongly disagree about something, or when I've hurt her in some way, she feels distant from me, and it takes more time than I'd like to get close again. As for me, I can get close within minutes of a fight, even if it really hurt my feelings."

Michael's prescription for reconnecting after an argument: "Sex at a time like this? Sure!" To that, the men of the husband brotherhood add: "Why not?"

In the immortal words of Phil Callaway, author of I Used to Have Answers, Now I Have Kids (Harvest House): "We husbands have three desires in life: food, sex, and. … we can't think of the third thing. Seriously, a happy guy makes a great husband. And it doesn't take much to make us happy."

I can't speak for Phil, but I remember the third thing that keeps me happy. Every few weeks, I need Jeanette to tell me whether my brown loafers go with the khaki trousers or the navy blue pants. Every time she clarifies this for me, I'm a really happy man.

I enjoyed this article. It helps to be reminded that when my husband wants to end a fight it's not because he doesn't want to resolve the issue, but that he simply doesn't want to fight. It helps to be reminded that his bad mood probably has nothing to do with me, and that he really does love me, without being all mushy about it. It's true that women look for a meaning behind a meaning behind a meaning. I over analize every little thing my husband says sometimes when I should just be taking it at face value.
