[size=18pt]Bank fraudsters, car robbers paraded in Ibadan[/size]

OYO State Police Command, on Wednesday, paraded seven suspects, including five students of the Universities of Port Harcourt and Abuja, a fake soldier, all claiming to be members of a syndicate which specialised in siphoning money from various bank accounts through the internet.

Police Commissioner, Mr. Baba Adisa Bolanta, speaking during the parade at the Police Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, told newsmen that the suspects were picked up on 6 August, at the Ring Road, Ibadan.

He said after a thorough investigation, the suspects who were in a Peugeot 406, had been in the state capital since 14 July, 2009 and lodged in a hotel in Oluyole area of the state capital.

The suspects were Oberoko Collins (22), Ibey Chimezie (22), Owelipodor Hubert (23), Ikechukwu Okeke (23), Chukwuma Innocent (24), Victor Augustine Mbanugo (29), and Divine Alex Obinna (26). They were said to be into hi-tech cyber crimes which they perpetrated by hacking into banks’ websites through MSR platforms.

According to the police boss, after hacking into the banks’ websites, they transferred funds from bank customers’ accounts into theirs.

He said that Obinna, who claimed to be a soldier just arrived from peacekeeping mission in Sudan and others suspects, had admitted to be internet fraudsters in their confessional statements.

Also paraded were two suspected armed robbers and their godfather, who claimed to be a car dealer in Oke-Ado area of the state capital.

The suspects, Nkem Ube, Dele Ajayi and Fatai Abubakar (a.k.a. Agba), were arrested by the police on 24 June, August, on a tip off that they stole a Volkswagen Toureg Jeep.

Ibrahim Olalekan BasitIF you are one of those people who patronise spiritualists or herbalists for assistance, you better watch it before you fall victim to these young men who are desperate to make money.

Recently, the long hand of the law caught up with a part-time student of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Ibrahim Olalekan Bashit, who has been hiding under the cover of an Islamic scholar to dupe unsuspecting members of the public.

The 26-year-old student in the Department of Business Administration, who was arrested, following a tip off by the police last Monday, told Crime and Security in an interview that his victim, Lukmon Olowomose, was introduced to him by a friend who he identified as Olumide.

Apart from being a student, the suspect claimed that he was an Islamic scholar (Alfa), after attending an Arabic school at Okeseni, Ibadan, Oyo State, where he claimed he spent 13 years.

“I am a part-time student of The Polytechnic, Ibadan. I also attended Arabic school at Okeseni, where I spent 13 years. I am a qualified Islamic scholar. I can read the Holy Qur’an very well,” he said.

According to him, his recent victim, Lukmon, had approached him in 2005 over some spiritual problems and he promised to assist him through prayers. He said he had given him (Lukmon), water mixed with Qur’anic scriptures to drink, but unfortunately in 2006, he came back to say his problems were yet to be solved.

He said that his victim had wanted him to offer prayers for him so that he could be able to travel out of the country. He claimed, Olowomose also approached him for assistance, so that his father could will some property to him.

Bashit said though the victim claimed that he collected N1.5 million from him, he said: “I collected N413,000 from him to assist him to solve his spiritual problems.

“The victim was one of those people I assisted with prayers when they were in problem. I prayed for him and gave him hantu (Arabic verses written on the black slate and washed up with water) for spiritual assistance.

“He had problem with his parents on property and wanted to travel out. I collected N413,000 from him. I started working for him in 2005 and in 2006, I stopped working for him.

“He came to tell me that his problem did not stop since he was unable to travel out and his father did not give him the property. He came to arrest me,” Bashit added.

The suspect, who claimed that the money was paid in instalments, told Crime and Security that he had worked for several people, saying that some of them now live abroad.

Speaking on the allegation that he had once duped somebody of N 2.5 million, the suspect confirmed that it was true but with another client who, he said had travelled to Calabar.

The victim, who claimed that his father is dead and his mother on sick bed in one of the prominent hospitals in the state capital, said he did not use the money to take care of his ailing mother, because it was not even enough to take care of himself.

Speaking on his plight, the victim, Lukmon told Crime and Security that the suspect was his childhood friend. He stated that after explaining, he (Bashit) demanded N50,000 to assist him spiritually.

Lukmon who claimed to be an electronic trader in Oke Padre, Ibadan, said that after a while, the suspect asked him to bring N700,000 to assist him to purchase some electronic gadgets from his friend, adding that he was yet to receive the goods from the suspect.

“Later, I gave him N200,000 for spiritual assistance and the last day, he told me that I should come with N60,000, which he said would be used to prepare sacrifice dish for the gods.

“When I got there, he ordered that I should close my eyes and that a spirit will come and collect the money from me. But I only saw a man, who opened the door and collected the money from me, and that was what made me to inform the police because I believe that he must be a fraudster,” he concluded.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olabisi Okuwobi, who confirmed the story said that the suspect, under the pretext of assisting his victims, had always succeeded in duping a great number of them. A source said that in most cases, the suspect ensured that his victims after spending their money, went ahead to borrow and at the end of the day, ended up in selling their properties so that they would be able to meet the financial demands of the suspect. http://www.tribune.com.ng/20082009/tue/crime3.html

THE Imo State Police Command has exhumed the head of an 18-year old girl, Miss Pepetua Chinwe Obieri, who was allegedly killed by her boyfriend for ritual purpose.

The Imo State Police Commissioner, Mr. Aloysius Okorie, dropped this hint on Wednesday, while parading four suspected men that allegedly carried out the operation at Ndiakunwata in Arodizuogu in Ideato Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects were: Emeka Uwakwe, the boyfriend to the girl who hailed from Ndiakunwata in Arodizogu, and Damian Joseph Akara from Akwa-Ibom State.

Others involved in the killing of Miss Obieri, who hailed from the same local government with her boyfriend, were Anthony Obioha from Lude Ahiazu Mbaise and Chigaemezu Anyaona, the native doctor that was to make money for Pertetua’s boyfriend.

The commissioner of police told newsmen that the deceased left her house on July 26, 2009, to complete her last papers in the West African Examination Council’s (WAEC) Senior School Certificate Examination. She called her parents on her GSM to inform them of her arrival at her destination at Ndia-kunwata Arodizogu.

According to the commissioner, further communication between the deceased and the parents were no longer possible because several attempts made by her parents to reach her proved abortive as her handset was no longer going.

Worried by this situation, the father according to commissioner of police, decided to trace the deceased to the community and all effort made by the father to see her failed hence, he reported the matter to security agencies in the area.”   http://www.tribune.com.ng/20082009/news/news8.html

To think all of them where daughter in laws at some point. My sister's mother in law is cool and she only has the one son who married my sister but I thank God for her everyday. She is just and angel. My mother has retired and moved back to Nigeria but she still calls my mom every now and then to check on her. I have called her on every birthday and anniversary she has had since my sister and her husband got married. They are Sierra Leonians but you really can't tell because they come to all our Nigerian functions to support my sister. Every woman should pray for a mother in law like her. Oceanic alone has taken fund from depositors (total deposit) to the tune of 835 Billion!


That alone is more than the 420 Billion CBN is pumping into the five banks. If every depositor with Oceanic tries to withdraw their money there isn't much CBNs 420 billion can do.

In banking when u take in money from a depositor its called a liability. Oceanic alone has more liability than the 420 billion and don't get me started on Union or Intercontinental. Remember Union has been taking deposits for about a hundred years now. Imagine how much liability they have. Intercontinental has so many salary accounts (imagine how deposits they have taken from people)

In my opinion, just leave a minimum balance of 50k cause that is the max NDIC will pay u back if the bank goes under. Move the rest to a savings or fixed -deposit account with the banks that have passed.

I totally agree with the poster that said the 5 banks are now the strongest! They have FG funds and will nw aggressively pursue loan recovery with the full backing of the CBN. Let everybody relax! I have substantial funds with Oceanic and Intercontinental and have not witnessed any reduction in service delivery.my suppliers get their money when they present my cheques.anyway let's pray that Lamido doesn't lose steam and continues progressive reforms until our financial sector gets a sound footing.

you guys want to trust a central bank governor word. when was the last time a govt official told you what was true in nigeria? this is a man any well oiled pressure group can move out of office tomorrow. if you really have as much as you said you better cover your back by moving some funds as a matter urgency if you love them that much bring it back after this whole drama.

a friend told me he got a very worrying advice from his bank manager when he asked for transfer of funds to one of the listed banks london office way back 3 months.

Yes i understand that but at the same time, the 'business' does not mis-appropriate the funds. It is the 'people' or 'directors' that disburse these funds for use in one project or the other hence, if the assets of the business are confisticated and the banks are not able to get all their money back, the people/directors etc will have to be held responsible.

Its not a crime for the rich in the society to borrow money either from banks or from any other lending financial institutions as being argued on nairaland, but it becomes a crime when those incharge of the lending process try going into hiding as the case with the MD & CEO of oceanic bank, Cecilia Ibru, who was arrested at the airport after trying to get out of the country.
I think there's every need to sanitise our banks so as to encourage foreing investors into the country.

i am not one of those peopl saying no borrowing what is wrong in nigeria is borrowing with no intention of paying is very high.

you need to know the amount of B & DD in naija banks books and the few people that owe these vast sums.

IBADAN-An Ibadan Grade C Customary Court’s President, Mrs Ibijoke Adeleke-Gomes, has identified the economic downturn in Nigeria as a major factor contributing to the break-up of marriages.


Adeleke-Gomes told newsmen on Monday in Ibadan that the rate at which couples turned up in courts, seeking the dissolution of their marriages, was alarming.


“It is a pity that divorce is now very rampant, seriously becoming the order of the day among couples,” she said.


Stating possible reasons for this increase, Adeleke-Gomes fingered, among other reasons, the poor state of the nation’s economy.


“Although there are many reasons, the most critical factor is the poor state of the nation’s economy.


“Couples find it difficult to cope, especially if the man had been economically buoyant before now. Once the economic power is missing in the home, tension takes over the home.


“Usually, the man gets threatened and aggressive, particularly if the woman finds it difficult to tame her taste to suit the lowly state of their economic situation,” she said.


Adeleke-Gomes observed that men who practised polygamy now found it difficult to cope financially, hence they become grumpy and seek to divorce the “extra women’’ at slightest of excuse.


She, however, did not absolve the women, manyof whom, she said, were greedy and insatiable, preferring to move from one husband to another.


She said that marriages contracted without enough time for courtship often resulted in divorce.


“We have situations whereby couples got married within days of meeting each other and because they did not really know each other, such marriages ended up collapsing within a year,” she said.


To stem the trend, Adeleke-Gomes said that the government could assist by creating more jobs and establishing development projects that would enhance the economic power of the citizenry.


She also advised parents to ensure that their children were well instructed on the demands of marriage.


“Marriage is for the matured and parents should get them prepared for the challenges therein,” she said.

My mother in-law to be was actually the one that bought my traditional marriage clothes (lace). I'm too busy at work during weekdays & she thought she could get it herself. I actually didn't like the idea but my hubby-to-be gave her a go ahead insisting i didn't know much about "laces" but "jeans & tops". I only looked at the motive behind it. My mother in-law to-be is such with a heart hoping to always please me. (past experiences) eventually when i saw the lace last saturday, i liked it & she was glad i did, cos i cld see the glitter in her eyes.

My Point: We should always look at the motive behind something before jumping into conclusion. Op's mother-in-law might have just been agitated & ancious to opt to buy the clothes or go with the poster. Putting her off must have been really saddening. Sometimes daughters in-law unknowgly work @ mothers in-law's wrath which they build up slowly. I really don't think any mother in-law will have a mind set to be evil to his son's wife. Try working at ur wisdom in handling issues instead of carrying the phobia for mothers in-law all around u . . .cos u'll become one someday

I Totally agree with you. The responsibility of managing a large company in Nigeria is difficult and tricky. I am of the school of thought that to stay in business in this country, you have to either cheat, turn a blind eye to some unethical practices your company engages in or be cheated. Further to this, i want to say that it is not only the banks that should be audited. Maybe other companies: Insurance, Telecoms, Manufacturing, ministries (Government), Parastatals, the Presidency, and maybe even Churches. It may just be seen that other CEO's have been dipping their fingers into the honey pot. The rot is everywhere. 

In this case though, tribal or not, i see a case of victimization - for one reason or the other. Why? Because i see this as a case of sacking 5 robbers out of a known, lets say 100. Why is Elumelu still a CEO? Ovia, Atuche, Imokhuede and the others? Why is Egwu still a Minister? And Lukman, and others? Why is David Mark still the Senate President? Why is Yar'Adua still the president? Have all these people not made mistakes while in office? Are they performing any better than these CEO's performed?

Mark these words, regardless of what Sanusi does, there is no way the sector can be completely rid of the rot. When new CEO's are appointed and Sanusi leaves office in the future, the next CBN Governor will still find some fault with the new CEO's and MD's. The banking, or any other institution cannot be changed UNTIL THE SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY CHANGES. The banks and their CEO's are a product of the SOCIETY AND THAT CANNOT BE CHANGED BY SACKING 5 OR ALL OF THEM.

i remember the two men very well and remember Commerce bank too well.
they were the super bank and super bankers of those days.
i remember that Gamaliel Onosode was the bank chairman at a time and left shortly before the collapse.
foe that he earned my respect (considering that i am very cynical about the Nigerian elite).
i also remember that Wakilin Adamawa was a major shareholder of that bank.

the problem i have is why present day super bankers refused to learn anything from the debacle of the likes of Crystal bank and Commerce bank of the past?
their is an inherent greed in capitalism that cuases innovation and progress to thrive but their must be a fine line where the majority must refuse to cross.today banks have blurred the line and infact made it non existent.everything seems to go.
regulation is the moral compass of capitalism.in this regard, the CBN has failed the country.

i dont know why we hate truth. go back i have been saying for years here that Union bank, UBA, first bank and the rest were always transferring bad and doubtfull debts from Lagos and other state capitals into  the books of rural branches the owners of the debts never went into from way back 1980S so why was  commerce bank singled out?.   whatever they practised at the bank they saw UBA and the others got away with that is the truth.

personally i think they made themselves vulnerable when they began to acquire some prestige debt portfolios from the 3 big banks.  dint forget osayameh already had trouble from the 3 northen guys i mentioned earlier within UBA  who saw it fit to lock him away as UBAs AGM personell to take him out commercial banking they knew was his domain.  he left to start his commerce bank and sadly didn't take care of the power politics of the northen mafia and some greedy Yoruba's within the system.

Yes, they mismanaged and they were incomepetent to an extent but there was a tinge of politics in it.

With the way Abacha used the failed bank tribunal to hunt this guy's, you would think Abacha was concieved of the Virgin Mary!

Not only was Osayameh and Adekanye hunted, the entire board of Commerce Bank were hunted.

I happen to share blood and a last name with one of the men on the board of Directors at commerce bank.

HE lost everything, soldiers, godo-godo and MOPOL destroyed, vandalised and confiscated everything that had his name on it.

His house which had the imprint of obscene wealth(where did he get all that money from sef!) was mowed down by bulldozers with cars and properties still in it!. Dude couldn't pick a pin from the house before he bailed out and went on some exile as the military junta were all over everywhere looking for this guy. Personally, i was directly hit by this. How many times did MOPOL and Aboki soldiers ravage my house looking for this guy? Tons of times!  

Banking in Nigeria needs a lotta sanitation and am glad Sanusi is cleansing the augean stables even though he also definitely has some skeletals in his cupboard. But if it entails the "animals" wiping out themselves (as Sanusi is doing) would make Nigeria better. Thats fine! Am all for that!

thanks for the insight. most people believe everything they read in nigeria's political & tribal newspaper.  osayameh was already being lined up for big scandal from within UBA when he was with them but the power that be didnt think it  was ok as if may affect the bankwho gladly took him to lagos to  frustrate and were very glad to see him jump out of the system.  

unfortunately that was the motivation / vengeance for taking over some of the facilities that later became an albatross on his neck. dont forget UBA was already over exposed to ile-oluji and other ondo related facilities as at when he left so

87, 88 and 89 were some dangerous banking years in nigeria when some of the wicked instability harvest we are reaping today were sown.

there might have been a case of tribalism and victimisation but the truth of the matter was that recklessness was the bedrock of the failure of commerce bank.
they must have only armed their enemies to harm them. this is why we counsel everyman to choose his fights wisely.  they made so many enemies who saw them as too smart and a threat. it is not easy being managed by people whose only reason for being your boss is they come from certain region is it?  it brings envy and treachery.

i do not trust anyone in the limelight in the Nigerian space (because in the past they have repeatedly disappointed and proven themselves to be hypocrites) but the only Nigerian bank i respected and still do respect is Mr. Atedo Peterside.
A man that was constrained by his vision, strategy and a willingness to b different.

i am sorry to say this.  you have something going on in your brains.  you mean this guy got arrested becos of your Honda packed infront of his house.

My point precisely. The car wasn’t stolen. He didn’t break into your house to steal the keys; neither did he car jack your wife while she was driving it.

Your wife must have voluntarily given him the keys at some point.

This is a civil/moral case and not a criminal case. What exactly is he being charged for? The police are just going to make money out of you both.

what do you do, when your belonging was initially declared missing , and the person that gave it out truely was at large i.e not immediately available to provide the useful info, and I luckly found it in posesion of whom I dont know. I SHOULD SAY THANK YOU MAN for keeping my car. or take the car forcefully from him when he doesnt know me,  and obvoiusly I cant take laws into my hands, I have to invlove the law enforcement agency , let him explain himself.
