so why is earning salary not "tieing" the working prostitutes over?  you know how many nigerian women have no need for the money from this stupidity?
Outstrip:
JJYOU and toyosi I agree with your original posts. It is sad that it is as bad as it is. It has to start with parents. I personally believe that the way most african men are raised is appalling. These old money miss road have been preying on these girls from when they were 14 or so. They have no shame and culturally they are entitled to any woman or even female child they see. A lot of african men were raised with a sense of entitlement and no sense of selfrespect and we are now seeing the product of that raising. Money for hand back na ground is nothing to them at this point. It's almost like they were raised to LovePeddler. I am not saying that these girls and their parents hold no responsibilities but I believe that those little girls that we were seeing stll in their school unforms in a "big man's" car in those days are all now entering the universities in a completely different state where there are no prying eyes of family members or family friends.
you captured nigeria so well.  i have not been to mosque lately but i know not even the religious houses are safe from prostitution in that morally bankrupt greedy country

I totally disagree and I live among them but then that is my opinion.

What you said should also go vice versa, a true woman should learn to fulfill her man's dreams and help him attain personal goals and ambitions. I'm also assuming Chick flicks doesn't just mean Nigerian movies. Now that being said, a box 24k gold bars/coins shocked shocked shocked shocked unless the man is from a very rich family and doesn't mind that, in my opinion, is just too much for dowry.

@ cooljade, a lot of guys(not all) have certain ideas about a woman's place in the home or society, fighting those ideas here on NL is futile so don't even bother wink. I like how you're fulfilling your dreams,it shows you have guts but washing a man down because he doesn't agree with your ideas will get you nowhere. Silence they say is the best answer for a , you get my drift. Also you cannot impose your ideas and opinions on others. See me giving advice. you wont allow your friends to mess your home but you will allow wife to mess your home.  someone quoted the proverbs here that a good woman builds her home but a bad one tears it down.

i have friends i consider great blessings. i have known some right from primary school days we are still best of friends. some have become almost closer than family members plus i am God father to some of their kids how do you just break such relationships becos some woman said so?  people are in your life for reasons.

it takes more than a wife to be fulfilled my brother and i speak as someone who is  not ashame to say i love and worship my wife dearly.

This has somehow been a persistent problem in relationships and marriages. This is a man whohas known these friends foe almost all his life, just because you might not like the way such a person wears his/her clothes you ask him to cut off. it is easier said than done. I agree with some who has posted ealier: your friend should try to get close to this lady, and find out what it is about her, that makes her husband unwilling to let go of her. People asking her to call up old male friends is like asking her to "cut off her nose to spite her face", she might end up loosing her home. Friends are a part of us, some has stuck with us through thick and thin and i just don't let go of such friends because my wife said so.
thanks mate. you speak right. i have female friends and cousins that ex g/friends have threatened "me or her" becos they felt threatened by the closeness. some how i been married to a person who has not one day been threatened by these same people and i wonder why.

Ok Fehmmmy,

Conclusion

Every man should aim for the best in himself and his wife. He should be proud to make her happy ( that's why ibo men are the best, it's a pity i never had the chance to date one). A true man will let his glory and success shine thru his wife. Nigerian men should learn to fulfill their women's dreams and help them attain personal goals and ambitions, to be their guide. He should LARN to draw the line of respect and need btw his biological family and new family (wife +unborn kids).

they should learn how to forsake and ignore their mums and family too or better still they should learn to kill their mum quietly before marriage becos it makes the "nigerian wife" happier

Well I came across this recent report on the BBC news page with what seems to be the reporter stating that -"Little Lagos" was coined in reference to high crime levels in the area called Thamesmead.

My question dear brethren is, does Little Lagos refer to the high presence of Nigerians in this area and other areas of London? Or is the reporter or whoever it is right?

Some negative stereotyping is clearly oozing out of this report. What do informed brethren have to say?

CrimeIwu Blames Violent Crimes On Politicians From Modestus Chukwulaka, Abuja by GEW(op): 1:50pm On Aug 11, 2009
Iwu blames violent crimes on politicians
From MODESTUS CHUKWULAKA, Abuja
Tuesday, August 11, 2009

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Maurice Iwu, yesterday described the sporadic outbreak of violence in several parts of the country as a fallout of political thuggery, just as he took a veiled swipe at Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, for introducing cultism in the nation’s universities.

He said those perpetrating violence in different parts of the country were people who were armed and used as thugs by politicians in the last election, and who for what to do after the elections, have now turned the weapons against their fellow country men and women.

Drawing a parallel between the role politicians play in perpetuating violent crimes and that of an un-named old man in perpetuating violence on campuses, Iwu had, in an apparent reference to Soyinka who recently called for his removal from office, said cultism was dressed in a flamboyant robe and introduced it into the nation’s university system.

“One old man started cultism in our universities when he was young and gave it a flamboyant look,” Iwu said, although he did not identify the old man in the speech which he made in Abuja when members of the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters visited the INEC headquarters.
Noting that there was never a quick-fix approach to deepening democracy, he said “electoral laws are as good as they come,” pointing out that democracy as an on-going process, is never developed in a hurry, hence the practice is to fix the problems as they are identified.

Iwu said electoral reform is a far too important matter to be used as a political tool, adding that it would be a serious political blunder to turn electoral reform into mere political rhetorics. He called for the amendment of the electoral law to stipulate severe sanctions for those who use thugs in elections.
“I don’t think that the quest for power is enough reason for one to take up arms against his fatherland,” he said.

Besides addressing the problem of electoral violence, the INEC chairman also called for reform in aspects of the electoral law that deals with use of money in politics; the mindset which sees politics as do or die affair; gender imbalance in political representation, as well as internal democracy in the political parties.
A situation where people with deep pockets assault the people’s sense of propriety, not because of their superior ideas, but because of the enormous resources at their disposal, the source of which is often doubtful, he said, is not democracy. “People who are not elected or appointed should not determine who should be a leader. This is not what democracy is all about,” he said.

Stressing the need to make the parties internally democratic, Iwu observed that a person who is not democratic in his parties could hardly be expected to be democratic in dealing with another political party, saying that the right place to begin the entrenchment of democracy is in the political parties.
According to him, most parties do not hold meaningful conventions and congresses, and yet claim to be representatives of the people while people deny their party members of the right to vote in congresses. “We should start with our internal democracy, then every other thing will be added to our political reforms,” he said.
The INEC chairman also spoke on arrangement for the conduct of the re-run election in Ekiti South Zenatorial Zone, and said people should go and vote in the election.

To all those who flow and understand me, good for you . I now fully understand the statement , " POVERTY IS A STATE OF MIND" Thats why some people never succeed and even know what to do when they prosper. I realised why Nigerians have a very high level of heart failure/ high blood pressure. Majority of us don't know how to enjoy and invest in life the right way. Those who think buying gold bars / coins is a waste of money, shame on you. You should concentrate more on the economics of investement. 24 k Gold never falls short of its value, in fact , it gets more expensive as it gets older with you (particularly if its bought from a reputable manufacturer) it becomes an antique over time. Ever wonder how some people become extremely rich over night after the sale of a painting or portrait or even on things as odd as a bottle of wine. some things appreciate so well over the years and add a great deal to ones wealth.

How many of you out there have lost money to the crumble of the stock excange, or don't you know that a brand new car starts depreciating the moment it is bought? For those who wonder my questioning his choice of a car gift to his sister. well i can tell you for sure that the sister contributed nothing to his life as she got married at the age of 20 while he (my friend's fiance) is 40 years old. so tell me what good she could have contributed to his struggle to the top.And mind you. The sister's wedding was in May this year and i'm VERY SURE the economy has hit rock bottom by then, yet he had such money to spend . Girls out there, may you never meet a man who is controlled by his mother, everyone around knows the mother adviced him to but the sistyer a car since she had none. so who's the real gold digger herehuh

As for those who say i know too much of my friends relationship, that's cos we are like sisters, we confide in each other all thru life. some girlfriends feel more comfortable having personal discussions with their female best friends rather than partents. And mind you, her paretnts had not influenced her choice of dowry. They are responsible citizens and parents. Don't blame her for her dream, pls dream your dream and start enjoying life ,

you guys have told yourselves lies so much you are beginning to almost believe it. the problem here is not the money, MIL, or the gold but attitude. by the way how did mummys boy jumped from 38 to 40yyrs in 2 days?

CoolJade, you’ve lost me now.

1. Is your friend adamant on receiving this bride price/dowry as an investment?

2. Does she want it just live her dream?

3. Is it a power struggle and your friend is trying  to “show” the mother-in-law that she is now in control as the wife to be?

Honest answer to all three questions is to tell your friend to drop it; it isn’t really worth it. This is honest advice I will give to my blood sister.

Your friend will get her gold bars over and over again from her hubby over the years. He will gladly part with it then & even MIL will not bat an eyelid when he does.

Honestly there is no point making enemies with MIL now. Remember MIL is hubbys mum and most men do have a soft spot for their mums.
[li]If you ever meet a man who is nasty to his mum, I advise you to run faster than a Kenyan marathon runner.[/li]

If your friend plays her cards right she will have her husband eating out of her hand over a period of time.

Patience is a virtue.
you are right

RomanceRe: How Does Does A Woman Cope With Being The Man Financially? by GEW: 12:07pm On Aug 11, 2009
Gabry:
Efficacy_c,

The only question you ask yourself is do you really love him? If you really do, than go for it! At times, when you want to have happiness, you really have to work your way up for it despite what happens.

The other day I was in church and a pastor was telling me about his love life. He told me that in his life, he respects his wife more than anyone else in the world. When they both were young, he comes from a poor background and his wife comes from a wealthy background. His nwife was the person that bought the house, the car, paid the bills to begin with cause she was in a better position to do so. And than his wife work together with him on a business and now he is running the business with the help of his wife. He said since than, he had always sworn to God that he would never hurt his wife. He would always stay faithful to her and will always love her more than he loved himself. Till this date, they have been married for 32 years. Their children had grown up and had successfull careers and one of their daughter took over the business and he became a pastor.

Let me tell u a story about my aunt. She is an Egyptian woman and she got married to my uncle. We are not blood related but I called them my second parents its because they have really helped my family alot through good and rough times. . . (Long story there due to religion). Anyways, my aunt was in LOndon when she studied for her degree and she met my uncle there. My uncle was basically broke. Anyways, they both fall in love and they got married and she paid for the wedding. And she had to work 3 jobs cause she wanted her husband to get a Masters Degree in Psychology and he did. IMAGINE! She work for his education, she work for the bills, she work for the marriage and she work for the family. That time they had one daughter. And after he graduated, they came back to Malaysia and because of his qualification, he became a General Manager for Shell. But something happen. . . Someone fraud him and he was decalred as bancrupt. Than my aunt had to work once again for the family  and soon she told my parents about this and my father now took him as his business consultant. My father and his wife help him cleared up his bancruptcy. By next year his name should be cleared up and he will than be a politician of the country. The next thing he knew is that by next year, he will have alot of money and property and what did he do? He went to a lawyer and put everything under his wife and children's name and none for him its because he really appreciated them and he love his wife to the fullest for being with him through good and rough times.

So my dear, I hope these two stories would inspire you than intoday's modern society, its not the guys fault when he does not make it or when he has no money. At times, we the females have to know when to stomp in our feet and be with our man (thats if we really love and trust and want to have a fuiture with them).  Good luck in your future endeavors and may God bless you through the right path of life. Stay bless sweety  kiss
tks gaby,  i love your story the trouble is most nigerians have short memories.  nigerians are mostly very ungratefull and forgetfull people.  majority would have married other women or had girl friends and children all over the place without shame.  i have been wondering why we live like this.

i dont have much problem with this guy here but i have problem with his shameless mum and family who have no shame asking a young girl for money.  i think we touched on this re : the flashing thread.  i dont know why people have no shame in asking for money and things from people they hardly know. it is a big shame.  i too come from a very poor home so i understand what he may be going through but that is no excuse for the mum and sibblings to take thier leg and waka to a young girl trying to sort out her life and start demanding things.  it is silly thing to do.
@ Chaircover, if I were 22, I'd stick with him because I won't be bothered by time.

@ Mr. Lola, I think you're rather mean, you don't leave a girl who stood by you through thin and thick because she got scared of her future and walked out. Remember the times she spent on you, let your conscience call you to caution, whoever you date today might tell you she would have stayed with you even if you didn't have a penny but it might just be a fat fat lie.

Finally, I'll say a big thanks to Gabry, kiss. You said it all, you just helped me clear my head. I'll take the risk and stick with him. Thank God for blessing me with a good job, we shall go through this together and I hope I shall get back to you soon with success stories.

On a lighter  note, I didn't realize there were so many intelligent people on nairaland. when I used to read through posts before I joined, there used to be loads of insults and childish banter here. I must say, I'm impressed.
i always say it is beter to catch up than clean up. dont let age set you into the wrong hand.  watch and pray seriously before you leap into this relationship as a marriage.  i dont like the sound of you taking care of a man yes things can change for him tomorrow so it can get better for you too.  why must you carry a burden you were not meant to carry becaue of the fear of him becoming a dangote tomorrow?  what if things dont change you still want to be giving recharge card, barbing,  transport and pocket money at 50?   na you born am abi?

it is not selfishness to stop taking care of them. if you need to take him  for deliverance  so he starts getting his life sorted out and if you can actively help him start looking for work too and o dont take i wont do this from him and then watch what he does with his life and money.

back2back:
Nope. Nigerians like everyone else should not be limited in their travels.

But killing people because they are 'illegal immigrant' deserves a complete condemnation.

Nigeria should organise '3rd Marine Commando' to go Libya and rescue these people.

We should put Libya and everyone that support them on our list of 'Enermies of Nigeria People'

This would send a signal to the whole world; dont mess with Nigerians.

But I know Yaradua is 'spineless'!!
for all you know he will be doing it on behalf of nigerias evil politician

Jihad is an Arabic word whose root is jahada, which means to strive for a better way of life. Other nouns are Juhd, Mujahid, Jihad, and Ijthad. The other meanings are endeavour, strain, exertion, effort, diligence, and fighting to defend one’s life, land and religion.

It should be stated here that the highest degree of Jihad in Islam is when a person is making struggle against himself. He should not allow himself to commit any crime, any assault, or any type of ill doing against the law, the society or the environment. A Muslim who already submitted himself and his loyalty to God (The Creator of the Universe) has to try his best to control his ego, his lusts, and his selfishness.

He should be humble, amicable, and friendly to all irrespective of colour, nationality, ethnic background, gender, language, creed, position or religion. A Muslim is that person who walks and behaves like an angel on this planet. He is to take care of poor, the needy, those who are out of jobs, and those who are homeless. He is to sacrifice his time, money, knowledge, wisdom, effort, energy and all other capacities in order to please God, and harmony among themselves. This is considered in the Book of God as a true Jihad.

Anyone who makes Jihad against himself is to be rewarded by God in this world and in the hereafter. One has to make sure that while he is making Jihad against himself; his intention should be for the love of God, and for the sake of making people happy, healthy and safe. He should never brag about his sacrifices; and he should never exploit people at all, otherwise he would be the loser in this world and in the hereafter. PS: For more references one may read the Qur’an (3: 142); (22:78); (29:6); (29:69).
Jihad is not a war to force the faith on others, as some people may think. It should never be interpreted as a way of compulsion of the belief on others.

Islam prohibits terrorism, kidnapping, and hijacking, in peace and in war when carried against civilians. Whoever commits such violation is considered a murderer and is to be punished by Islamic State. During wars, Islam prohibits Muslim soldiers from harming civilians, women, children, elderly, and the religious men like priests and rabbis; it also prohibits cutting down trees and destroying structures.

HOLY WAR
The term Holy War is not an Islamic terminology. The only Holy is God, the Creator. His words are Holy. As far as war is concerned, there is nothing in the Qur’an or even in the teachings of Islam, which indicates that Muslims should wage a war at all. Moreover, it is against the teachings of Islam to practise what is called Holy War. This action is not at all from Islam. It is a borrowed terminology from the Crusades.

Indeed, the Crusades of the Romans had used this terminology and applied it in action. They considered the local people in the Middle East as infidels. It happened that those people of the Middle East were Christian and Muslim Arabs. Even those Christians did not accept the Crusaders as their leaders. Hence, the Romans had to get the verdict and the blessings of the then Pope to wage a tragic war against the Middle East people. They considered the local Christians and Muslims as Infidels.

In order to raise enough money to buy ammunition, they started selling croissant in their local churches. They thought that the croissant is the symbol for Muslims, i.e. crescent and star. This was not true of course. Muslims do not worship the moon. They worship Allah (The Almighty) alone. Their pledge of allegiance is only to Allah, the Creator of the whole universe.

At that time the Crusades killed 200,000 local people in the Middle East. Similarly one can say that the Inquisition in Spain was carried by the Francos against the local Muslims, Christians and Jews. They killed 10 million Muslims and 4,000 Jews. Those acts of terrorism were done in the name of their religion. However, Jesus was innocent of their terror, and Christianity and other Christians of the world are innocent of their crimes and atrocities. It should be stated here that the local Christians of today have nothing to do with the Crusades or with the Inquisitions. No one is to be blamed for someone else’s mistake in the past history.

Therefore, Islam is against Holy war. It is against killing innocent people. Qur’an stipulates that whoever kills one person it’s as if he killed human beings at large; and whoever saves the life of one person it’s as if he saved the lives of all people on this planet. Moreover, if someone tries to create commotion, disturbance and hate among people so that they may start war, he is committing a big sin, which is bigger than killing humanity at large. Hence, Muslims try to live in peace and harmony with all people of the world without exception.

until we rid ourselves of the selfish mentality that those who get duped are stupid and deal with the perpetrators, we will never clear our image in this country, it will only get worse. Not all those who get defrauded are greedy, some of them only try to be helpful, its unfortunate we turn around and call them fools!
