Business › Re: I Just Got My Inheritance; I Need Your Advice by ghm: 3:49pm On Jan 24, 2022
Boogiebee:
Hello Nairalanders,

So straight to the point. Please I need your advice about two things.

1. I just got my inheritance and I got cash of 8M and there's this popular belief of people squandering their inheritance,I don't want that to be my portion so which business can I invest it into. For context, I currently have a job and I'm not ready to quit so please put that into consideration.

2. My younger brother is still a student so he has asked me to save his portion of 6M in bank until he graduates but I don't think that's a good idea. I would rather he put it in some form of secure investment that will be yielding something. Kindly give us suggestions.

May the soul of my beloved Father continue to rest in peace. Amen
I don't usually comment but I do read from time to time but I belief you are sincere and I think I can assist with my token.

1. Watch this Youtube video from alux.com - (15 Things To Do If You Get Rich All of a Sudden). Link -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVJOyArnq3s
2. Pick a pen and paper and write down all the suggestions you have seen from Nairalanders and review/meditate on it. They wil give you some ideas on Financial Education.

Having said the above, this is what I will do if I find myself in your exact situation.

1. I will not quit my job. I will continue working like nothing has happened.
2. I will change my brother's 6m in US Dollar and invest it with Stanbic IBTC Dollar denominated Money Market fund. You can walk into any StanbicIBTC Asset Management office to open an account.
3. I will do the same for my own N 8m.
4. I will not do any investment or business with the money until a minimum of 6 months.
5. I will get financially educated and review all suggestions above and choose 2 or 3 viable ideas and invest 20% of the money and see how it goes for at least a year.

I belief If I followed thses 5 steps, by 12 months I will be in a better situation to make decision on the remaining 80%.

I wish you the best.
Car Talk › Re: Are Kia And Hyundai Cars As Reliable As Toyota Cars? by ghm: 4:56pm On Jan 05, 2014
I have read this thread sometimes back but I am here today to share my experience. I used an Honda Accord and Toyota Camry as Tokunbo cars as I was advised that it is better to buy Honda/Toyota even if they are Tokunbo than to buy brand new Kia/Hyundai cars. After a couple of issues with the tokunbo cars, I followed my heart and went for brand new Kia sportage in 2006. Today my first Sportage is 7 years, it has done 82,000 kilometers, with regular servicing, I haven't changed anything in the engine, I have only replaced the AC compressor, ball joints and some bushings in the arm. I bought another one for my wife in 2010 and that one has also done about 45,000 kilometers, the only thing we have changed in it was a bearing in the the back axle.

I am not sure any other brand can do more than this. IMO, KIA/Hyundai cars are not inferior to T/H cars, they may even be superior.

Properties › A Block Of Shops Vs A Block Of Flats - Which Is Better? by ghm(op): 4:45pm On Mar 15, 2013
Friends, I have been having some disturbances in the past few days and I decided to bring it up here to seek your opinion so as to make a better decision. I have a plot of land on a tarred road in a developing residential area and I have been preoccupied with the desire to build a block of flat with 4 nos 2 bedroom flats on it. Suddenly, I was taken abark that a block of shops will be better considering the level of furnishing the flats will require and the simplicity of the shops.

FYI, a 2 b/r flat goes for 400K in that area now and once completed, I hope to earn 4 x 400K = 1.6M per annum as rent (all things being equal).
On the other hand, a shop goes for 15K per month i.e. 15K x 12 = 180K per annum. The land can also take up to 10 shops which is 180 x 10 = 1.8M per annum as rent.

I am assuming that the 2 styles will cost the same amount to construct.

With your experience, is there any other thing I need to take into consideration? Or I should just go by the straight arithmetic above that shop is better?

Please advise.
Cheers!

Hi Adesoji et al,

I urgently need your advice on this. My wife (using the passport with her maiden name)and I applied for US visiting visa in March but was denied. We thought the major reason was because she was pregnant anyway.

Now, we are planning to visit US next year with our baby this time around. My question is this, will it be okay if we apply again with my wife's new passport that now bears our SURNAME? Does this pose any issue that may work against us? Kindly advise. I am sorry, it is not about DV but the contributions I have seen here assures me that I can get a reliable and honest answer here.

Business › Re: Folorunsho Alakija Surpasses Oprah Winfrey As Richest Black Woman In The World! by ghm: 8:00pm On Dec 08, 2012
I took my time to read the full story with all the links and I discovered that the story is true.

She was allotted the oil block in 1993 by Babangida Administration. You will recall that Danjuma said categorically that he sold his own for one billion (1993) US dollars but Alakija did not sell her own but went into partnership with Star Deep(a subsidiary of Chevron) for a 40% stake. when they struck oil, NNPC under OBJ took over the 50% stake and her take was reduced to 10%. Forbes estimate of her $600m USD last year was based on the 10% stake.

She went to court that NNPC has no right to take over 50% without spending a dime and she claimed she spent an average of about 3 billion USD annually to get to a productive stage before NNPC decided to take it over. After a couple of years of legal battle, the Supreme Court in May 2012 ruled in her favour and that was how she owned 60% again and that projected her net-worth to over 3 billion USD ahead of Oprah's 2.7 billion as the world's richest black woman.

The breakthrough started in 1993 (19 years) ago and no wonder the success.

I really appreciate this woman for her tenacity in not selling her own oil block like some other people who are privileged to be given oil block then. If she had done so, this story won't have come up today. the so called $ 3B stake will be to some foreigners.

The way they chop money is like a disease/addiction. Some of us have not recovered from the SEC and Pension Fund probes where they chop and chop any how.

Career › Re: Any Hope With 3.49 CGPA? by ghm: 8:02am On May 19, 2012
@poster. I feel you because I experienced similar feelings. You can imaging on the day of graduation when all your colleagues were coming to shake you and wishing you all the best in life! Some saying they can never accept but fight it out and other similar unguided statements. That was a few years ago. Today, I work For a multinational oil company.

other posters had offeredvery valuable information, just use them to map out your strategy. Here is how I went about mne.

1.I registered for an MBA immediately ( after an engineering degree, perhaps because of banks, I can't remember again.)
2. I didn't even apply for any job with 2:1 tag, because I know we are so many in Nigeria and I don't want to get any depression. What I did was to look for a job with minimum of a 2:2 tag or 2:2 with a master tag. To my surprise, I started getting some fantastic ones. I approached them like this is for me and I got them. In one of the interviews I attended then, we were 24 at the last stage, 3 of us were 1:1; 18 were 2:1 and 3 were 2:2. Could you believe that only 3 were taken and 2 of us got 2:2.

need to mention that I also used to state it in my CVs as previous posters mentioned I.e. B.Sc. electrical/Electronics Engineering ( Second Class Hons. lower Division CGPA 3.49/5.00)
I also need to mention that I got 4 great jobs( Int'l oil company, Central Bank, Diamond Bank, Halloburton) that I can build my career around at the same time and I had to choose which one to go for.

So, as you work, I need to also remind you that the effect will reverberate all through your career, you may not be able to apply for jobs that still demand for 1:1 or 2:1 with a number of years of experience. You will need to always disaster-proof your career by proficiency and certifications, infallible self development. With this and God's favor shy will be your limit.

i wish all the bestin life!

Travel › Re: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedure? by ghm: 7:48am On Mar 22, 2012
Thanks for your kindness and generousity with information as regards Immigration to US.

My wife and I applied for US Visa but were denied. We thought we are very qualified and have sufficient tie back in Nigeria. I am working in an Oil Company and my wife is also a practicing Doctor. We have a fat account and we showed the Consulate officer the account statements on his request. My wife confirmed she is pregnant but she wasnt planning to give birth in the US. I guess the officer was not convinced on some things which we tried to explain but he still declined.

1. He wasn't convinced of my salary. He picked a line in my bank statement that was much lower than my salary and concluded that was my income, I showed him my company payslips and letter of introduction from the company that has my annual salary , he still wasn't satisfied.

2. My wife confirmed she is pregnant but she wasn't planning to give birth in the US but he wasn't convinced about this despite all explanations. He was thinking that she want to give birth in the US and was lying about it.

With these 2 issues I guess he denied us. Here are my quaestions? and I desire an honest opinion from you as usual.

1. Why did he denied us and how can we know the exact reason for the denial?
2. We were thinking he should just deny my wife and give me. Why did he deny the 2 of us?
3. We were tempted to re-apply immediately (at least one or two of us). What is your view about this? or should we wait until after our baby arrived before we re-apply?
Politics › Re: Ig Of Police's Directive On Stopping Of Road Blocks,my Personal Experience! by ghm: 1:25pm On Feb 17, 2012
I was on a long traffic 2 days ago in Port Harcourt but to my surprise, it was caused by the Police men extorting money from Keke NAPEP without even asking them to  clear off the road to prevent such great traffic.

I challenged the policemen that the IG has ordered that this should not happen again, immediately they replied "What the IG stopped was road blocks, this is a checking point" shocked shocked shocked

Kindly enlighten me, what's the difference between road blocks and checking point?

May be it is time for IG to stop both the road blocks and checking points! wink wink

Politics › Re: Osun Pays 13th Month Salaries To Workers. by ghm: 8:14am On Dec 22, 2011
@ PapaBrowne

I am sorry to disagree with you on your ascertions. They are absolute statements and there is nothing like that. Have you been in a position to be responsible for about 30 important things in face of very limited resources? Have you heard or used Ranking methods to make a decision after considering the pros and cons of all the items? Have you been priviledged to check out the alternative forgone on any of your decisions as every decision you made has all these? Amidst several capital projects, a single welfare package for staff is not out of order at all.

I am very comformatble now as i am in the Oil and Gas sector. I went to public schools in Osun State and my people are still in Osun State. I am grossly indebted to quite a number of Civil Servants - teachers, nurses, Doctors, Administrators etc who are working tirelessly with meagre amount and has helped several of us from such background to a level where we can compete with the world standard in several aspect of human endeavour.

I can't help wondering how on earth (several of us who are quick to cast aspersions) a family man will be surviving with about 17K monthly and still be very commited like most of them are.

Kudos to them and thanks for Aregbe for at least making them happy. I also hope the bad eggs among them will be fished out.
Politics › Re: Osun Pays 13th Month Salaries To Workers. by ghm: 7:59am On Dec 22, 2011
I called someone who works as a teacher in Osun and she confirm the following

1. That the Government is not owing any salary to date, Aregbe has also paid the december salary. VERY GOOD
2. The Government promised to pay all staff 25% of their Salary as the 13th Month.
3. The government promised that the workers will receive the money before Friday  23rd dec. 2011.

These are the confirmations I made from the people who are directly inpacted.

I did this to put things in perspective so that we can make accurate contributions.

Personally, I believe if the private sectors are rewarding their staff with 13th Month, why not the public sector? They deserve it and we should credit the Govt. to implement it even though it is 25%.
Hasty Generalization is also not FAIR, there are some civil servants that are working tirelessly and there are still some that will not take bribes.

Cheers.
Romance › Re: Can You Marry A Lady With A 3rd Class Degree? by ghm: 8:02am On Oct 18, 2011
It seems most time that some of us are just abusive by nature or immature in character. I have seen this as one of the major difference between us and our enlightend and white follows.

He asked for a sincere opinion and we are not compelled to respond to his post if we cannot be patience and give a matured response.

@Poster, You can marry a third class. A degree shows completion of a course. Some of our notable popular people this day dropped out deliberately to follow their vision and passion and they were successful at it. Bill Gates of Microsoft, Steve Jobs of Apple,, Zucherberg of Facebook etc.

If she had other important qualities that makes a good wife, Please marry her.

All the best.

If you are sure of more billionaires from Nigeria as you said and you can do your research and present you data to Forbe's, they will certainly adopt it once they can verify it.
Another issue you may have to deal with is whether the people you mentioned really wanted such publicity or not.

Cheers!
Business › Re: Africa Richest People 2011 - Most Are White (pics) by ghm: 8:18am On Oct 11, 2011
FYI, Forbes reports only verifiable wealth. If you have been following, you would have noticed that dangote came into the list when some of his companies were listed on the NSE. Until then he wasn't included as some of his investments and indirect and not public. You will also notice that Otedola made it when the share price of AP where he had major stock was very high. His wealth fell as the AP share price fell.

Certainly, there are so many more billionares in Africa and some of the men like Dangote also worth much more that what was quoted for them. Forbes is a reputed company and will like to defend whatever they quoted and unfortunately they won't if they cannot.

My 2 cents.

There are too many ignoramus in the corridor of power.

How can this man be comparing $11 of 1980s with the $110 of the 2000s.

The question he needs to answer is .

What is the value of $1 then and how much is it now?
What about inflation?
What are the cost of things then?
How much salary was he paying then?
How much does it cost to build a good road, schools, infrastructure then compared to these days?

If him and his cohorts can shamelessly stole hundred of millions of dollar when crude oil was $11 per barrel, how much would they have stolen if it is $110?
