I'm not arguing that there are no ghettos in parts of New York. My point is that all New York borough are livable. There may be some ghetto areas with hoodrats but they are livable. It's not like Lagos that Livability is restricted to the Island. How come 95% of beautiful pictures about Lagos are always Island pictures. I can authoritatively tell you that 90% of Lagos is a ghetto. Take that to the bank and i assure you that it won't bounce. I'm not trying to run down lagos as it's my city just as it is yours even though you've never been here before grin grin grin

90% of Lagos is not a ghetto. You don't seem to draw a line between sub-urban settlements and gheto. Becuase an area doesn't have skyscrapers doesn't classify it as a ghetto.

Not much has been added to what Federal govt did for Lagos Island. 85% of the roads shown here are
federal roads - built and maintained by Federal govt apart from
the sweeping aspect. Besides, 98% of the pictures shown here are those of the Island – an area
already developed long ago by the Federal govt and private sector.

So, please show us pictures of the Mainland – an area majorly under the jurisdiction of the Lagos
State govt. Show us pictures of Ikeja, Agege, Amuwo Odofin, Iyana Ipaja, Surulere, Okoko, Mile 2,
Ketu, Alakuko, Abulegba, Bariga etc

You're kidding right? Most of the roads in those pictures were renovated by the LASG. Many Lagosians will remember the massive reconstruction of Lagos Island during the 2nd term of Tinubu. The Tinubu square on broad street was commissioned on the same day the roads were commissioned during one of the Fashola raliies of 2007. The Fed. govt. may have built Lagos but have done zilch to assist the govt. in maintaining it.

For those of you claiming the development in Lagos is isolated to the Island, I implore you to visit Yaba, Surulere, Ikeja and many parts of Ikorodu. When LASG proposed the garden laws that will make most parts of Lagos wear a new look, many of you were screaming dictatorship, we can't eat our cake and have it you know?

Politics / Re: African viewpoint: 'Thank goodness for colonialism' by gidiMonsta(m): 3:26pm On Nov 27, 2012
pro01: Ethiopia and Liberia did not experience the "evil" of colonialism, yet they are hardly shining examples of how developed and prosperous Africa might have been without colonialism.

Indeed, is it a mere coincidence that the wealthiest and most developed African country (South Africa) - gained independence from white minority rule as recently as 1994? If it is beyond coincidence, is it therefore not plausible to argue that Nigeria (with her plentiful oil resource) would be far more developed and prosperous than South Africa, had the British been 'stubborn' enough to stay until the mid 1990s?

In any case, assuming (but not conceding) that colonialism did more harm than good for Africa, should the same not be said about Asia and the Americas? If so, why has Africa refused to move on like the rest of the colonised world have done? The case of the United States is trite, so no need to talk about that. What about Brazil, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, India, etc.? These countries were colonised - just like most countries in Africa. However, they have shrugged off the "negative" effects of colonialism, started from scratch, and proceeded to attain levels of progress, development and prosperity comparable to their erstwhile colonial masters'. Unfortunately, rather than emulate these shining paradigms, Black Africans have continuously preferred to whine about how great Africa would have been without colonialism, and how colonialism made development impossible to achieve! More ridiculously, these ideas are based on 'evidence' in obscure books - books that are little more than wild postulations and personal opinions/fabrications of the authors. Some prefer to swallow defensive and defeatist rationalisations spewed by pseudo-intellectuals such as Walter Rodney.

At the end of the day, we live with the stark reality of Africa's shameful cluelessness and underdevelopment that we cannot deny, let alone rationalise. Clutching at straws and citing nebulous historical accounts or "books" as evidence of how colonialism is responsible for our woes is hardly a mark of intelligence. Perhaps it would be more intelligent to find practical ways of overcoming such woes (supposedly inflicted by colonialism) as other colonised countries in Asia and the Americas have done.

I cry cry for you. You obviously don't know much about Africa. Google Abyssinia and see what Ethiopia was before the invasion by the Italians or better still visit Ethiopia and see the magnificent ancient structures there. From Ethiopia to Ogaden to Zanzibar to Lamu, you'll see amazing architectural designs some of which were exported to Europe.

Coming closer to home; The Oyo and Benin empires were great empires with political structures to rival that of Europe. The English were amazed to see the sophistication of these empires when they landed on our shores. They used technology to solve their day to day problems examples of which are still abound today, they had a currency and consequently an economy. They practiced capitalism even before the white men decided to christen and corrupt it. They had Military formations from Generals to recruits and even Barracks (Ibadan for instance was a military outpost). They were very advanced in medicine(no evidence of any plague whatsoever). They were trading with the outside world hence the osmosis and diffusion of knowledge from Sumeria, Babylon, Greece, China and Arabia would have gotten here in the long run. The Europeans got access to this knowledge first and took advantage of it before it could be assimilated into our cultures.

The Asians and Americans may have moved on but its gonna be hard for Africa. We were colonized last hence the Europeans corrected their mistakes of the past in other places such as India where they allowed the people retain their cultural identity, the colonization of Africa is not only physical but mental. Countries like Cameroon and Gabon are more like French vassal states, Mozambique and Angola still belong to the Portuguese empire.

Africa caanot move on yet until we finally let go of the shackles of colonialism like Brazil, India and other prosperous developing countries have done.

one_man: A king will die in Africa and buried with life human. A woman who have twins is an abomination, the sickness they don't understand is evil and the person suffers in evil forest. When they're doing any festival mothers are afraid of loosing their love Children.
I believe with colonialism we were able to break loose slightly from these barbaric act passed from our ancestors.

Do you know about the dark ages in Europe? Where people were burnt alive for having measles, where very beautiful women were labelled witches and were burnt at the stake? Where the Church forbade anything science and beheaded scientists?

Europe outgrew this phase not by colonialism but by the influx of knowledge from Egypt, the Arab world and China! Fibonacci learnt mathematics in Tunisia!! Colonialism did not help us, it destroyed us. We would have overcome the negatives in due course, colonialism truncated our development and entrenched an alien concept that is unsustainable for us.

Techwriter: What many people don't know is that American founding fathers(particularly James Madison who layter became the 4th president of the US) got their idea of the seperation of power from the bible. Isaiah 33:22
"For the LORD is our judge (judiciary), the LORD is our lawgiver (legislature), the LORD is our king (Executive) ..."

Any nation that will allow the Bible to influence their constitution, culture and way of thinking will rise to be the most powerful nation on earth(Ex USA). It is also evident from history that nations that have been influenced by the Qurans sharia law are the worst nations on earth today(eg Afghanisatn). And produced the worst dictators from Idi amin, to Abacha, Sadam, Ghadafi etc

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Jordan, UAE, Qatar are the worst nations on earth to live in? shocked shocked Stop deluding yourself with this bible shit. Religion has nothing to do with good leadership; Japan is buddhist country, China is atheist and these countries are very strong economically, while Philippines, Ecuador, Bolivia, Argentina are countries governed by your so called Christian laws are sh.it-holes.

Cunt_Destroyer: Islam's latest carnage
Defend this atrocities first before you come here with your gazza appeal

2012.11.19 (Charmang, Pakistan) - Rockets fired by Islamic militants crush a 6-year-old girl.

2012.11.18 (Maiduguri, Nigeria) - An 70-year-old retired pastor is executed in cold blood by Islamic extremists.

2012.11.18 (Nairobi, Kenya) - An al-Shabaab bomber slaughters ten minibus passengers

2012.11.18 (Khalis, Iraq) - A Fedayeen suicide bomber murders three Iraqis.

2012.11.18 (Ataq, Yemen) - A local soldier is kidnapped by al-Qaeda, tortured to death and then dumped at his family's house.

2012.11.18 (Shin Qamar, Pakistan) - Three laborers bleed to death following a Taliban bombing attack at a construction site.

What does these have to do with Israel's wanton destruction of Gaza? You steal their land, imprison them in their own country, destroy their farms, bomb them at ease (claiming strikes on militants) and you expect them not to fight back?

Many of you need to remove the wool of religion from your eyes and see that this is not a religious war. Y'all need to read up on Jewish eschatology to understand why the State of Israel will stop at nothing to wipe out the entire Arab population living between the Eupherates and Tigris.

In Jewish Eschatology; it is believed that after The great exile, all Jews will be returned to their ancestral Land, after which there will be a great war with Persia and other powers from the north (In the jewish Talmud the war is said to be with Gog and Magog.) where the God of Israel reveals himself and ends the war. The Messiah (a great leader NOT JESUS) will then come and rule the world, the temples of Jerusalem will be rebuilt. The jews believe that the world will end between year 6000-7000. It is widely believed that yr2000 of the modern calendar coincides with yr5770 of the Jewish calendar. I have read an Hadith that is quite similar to this story but with a more detailed description of events.

This is the main reason why the Zionist regime will keep attacking Palestine to free more land for the returning Jews and trying to goad Persia (Iran) into a war, they are preparing for the Messiah (they don't believe its Jesus).

You're wrong, the Ottoman Turks met the Arabs in Jerusalem, it was taken from the Romans by the Ummayad Caliphate and they let christians, muslims and jews live there in peace. It was during the crusades that Salauddin mobilized the Ottoman army to protect the muslims in Jerusalem from the marauding Europeans. He defeated Richard the lion heart and turned him back to England with his tails behind his legs. Don't turn history on its head.

Can these ACN folks just shut up! You people are sounding annoyingly confusing and desperate by the day. Lagos crowd gathered in January this year behind Bakare to shout from the Gani square that the people that milk this country through subsidy should be prosecuted. Now, Ifeanyi Uba is being prosecuted and he turns around to accuse the head of the very office that can provide a real proof of his defrauding the subsidy scheme. He did not really accuse her for anything, but for politics which i don't understand. Now the same people are shouting that NOI is a thief. How?

Let me ask again, is this battle really against corruption or against GEJ Do you people even have a moral stand? Must everything be used to play politics? I am getting more convinced that the fight against this government has nothing to do with getting us a better Nigeria but to run down the President and return power to the part of the country that you people are more comfortable with,

What does this have to do with ACN? Why do you accuse ACN anytime your govt. is criticized? Everyone knows Uba is a thief but that doesn't mean we should throw away his statement, if there's any truth in it then I'll be really disappointed cos NOI is one of the very few people I actually respect in this govt.
