Politics › “Tinubu Met Empty Treasury, He Is Borrowing To Sustain Nigeria”–Ex-Gov,Osoba by Gjrich(op): 8:48am On Jan 03, 2024
Former Governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration met an empty treasury upon assuming office.

According to Osoba, the situation compelled the Tinubu-led administration to embark on a borrowing spree as a stopgap measure.

Osoba made the remarks during an appearance on Arise Television, emphasizing the efforts made by Tinubu’s government to navigate the prevailing economic hardships in the country.

He assured Nigerians that while borrowing became necessary in the interim, the administration would review and adjust its strategies after the initial phase.

“When the treasury was empty and the last administration was borrowing to pay salaries, the whole place was empty. What else can you do other than in the meantime, borrowing to fill the gap?

“That does not mean that the culture of borrowing will go on forever. You met an empty treasury. There was nowhere to turn other than to still engage in a bit of borrowing. After the first year in office, the whole thing will be reviewed and we will see.

“Talking of borrowing, when your pocket is empty, you have to go to your bank to shore you up for some time. It depends on how you manage that situation.

“I have explained to you that we are lucky, but by June 1, the whole system was set up to totally collapse. I’m telling you if he (Tinubu) didn’t go the way the government had to go (things would have collapsed),” Osoba stated.

Despite acknowledging the current hardship, Osoba conveyed optimism for 2024, expecting improvements in the country’s economic conditions under Tinubu’s leadership.

Regarding the recent increase in the 2024 budget, Osoba asserted that the key lay in its practical implementation, highlighting the need for reasonable utilization of allocated funds.

Responding to inquiries about Tinubu’s absence from Plateau State amidst security crises, Osoba emphasized the president’s commitment to addressing the root causes rather than token appearances.

Osoba defended Tinubu’s policy decisions, acknowledging their impact on the rich and the poor and attributing them to the imperative of fostering economic growth.

He criticized the wasteful spending and extravagance among state governments, urging sub-national entities to curb excesses and enhance fiscal responsibility to alleviate financial strains.

Politics › Labour Party Will Be Nigeria’s Opposition Party In 2024 – Peter Obi. by Gjrich(op): 12:24pm On Jan 02, 2024
Labour Party Will Be Nigeria’s Opposition Party In 2024 – Peter Obi.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, on Monday said his party will adjust to a new role in 2024 as Nigeria’s main opposition party.

Obi, in his New Year Message, said LP will remain firmly in opposition and keep the All Progressives Congress (APC) on its toes to protect the interest of Nigerians.

The former Governor of Anambra State said, “As Nigeria is the only country we have, deeply endowed but lacking good leadership over the years, we will continue to seek a new Nigeria that we know is possible.”

According to him, a new Nigeria is possible in spite of the numerous yet-to-be-fulfilled aspirations of citizens.

Expressing his heartfelt and warmest greetings to all Nigerians, Obi prayed to God to bless them richly and grant them good heart desires in the new year and beyond.

Obi said: “The events of the past year are now part of our national history. As we trudge on, we remain mindful of the state of our nation and that our best hopes and aspirations remain largely unfulfilled.

“Peace and security continue to elude us with the rising level of bloodletting deeply troubling and sometimes beyond a war situation.

“A situation where hundreds of Nigerians are violently killed in December alone is deeply sad and unacceptable.

“While we pray for the repose of the souls departed, we demand that the Federal Government must do whatever is required to bring the perpetrators to justice and permanently stop a reoccurrence in any part of Nigeria.”

He noted that the nation’s economy needed a turnaround, considering the rising unemployment, inflation, poverty, inequality, and other key socioeconomic variables.

Obi said, “Nigerians are now very aware and convinced that good governance, inclusive development, and accountable leadership expected in a functional democracy continue to elude us.

“But we must be consistent and resolute in our demand for the rule of law, regulatory quality, and government effectiveness for transformative solutions to a litany of our social problems.

“If there is one fundamental threat to our democracy, it is the undermining and weakening of our national institutions and the capture of state affairs and resources by few individuals and private interests.

“This must stop for Nigeria to move forward and function as an inclusive and sustainable society and nation.”

According to him, in a democratic and secular country like ours, there must be full respect for the separation of powers between the three independent arms of government, as well as between the federating units.

He said the National Assembly should devote time and commit itself to the diligent performance of its functions, like the 2024 budget, which required its prudent examination and subsequent patriotic-oriented approval or rejection.

Obi said the nation must work assiduously to avoid drifting to a one-party state or a situation where the Federal Government intervened unduly in the internal affairs of the states, particularly in circumstances where national security is not threatened.

He added, “We in the Labour Party have undertaken in the national interest and in our undying commitment to a New Nigeria that is possible, to remain firmly in opposition and, as such, must remain focused going forward.

“Our collective role in nation-building remains fundamental and obligatory.”

He used the opportunity to thank all Nigerians who supported his campaign during the 2023 elections and voted for his party because of their belief in the quest for a New Nigeria.

Obi said the outcome of the 2023 presidential elections was contested and remained so, on record, “but the Courts of law have spoken; so be it.”

He said, “I wish to thank members of the Labour Party, the Obidient Family, friends, and well-wishers of Nigeria for their loyalty, resilience, tenacity, and commitment to true democracy.

“We will continue ongoing discussions and efforts for the Labour Party to adjust to our new role as Nigeria’s main opposition party.

“We will continue to constructively engage all Nigerians and our friends, who have now realised the vast implications of the road not taken; and the folly of national interest decisions predicated on sentiments and primordial interests.”

Obi said that Nigeria remained a God-given country and that the business of Nigeria was far too important to be left to those involved in transactional politics.

He said, “I am involved in the struggle for a New Nigeria that is possible and works for all and will remain passionately committed to the crusade.

I, therefore, implore you all who strive for a New Nigeria to remain fully engaged, committed and resilient as it is and will be possible.”

Politics › Northern Politicians Suffering Political Embarrassment From Tinubu - Kwankwaso by Gjrich(op): 9:29pm On Dec 12, 2023
Northern Politicians Suffering Political Embarrassment From Tinubu’s- Kwankwaso

The Coalition of Northern Youths Movement Initiative (CNYMI) has alleged a plot to weaken prominent Northern politicians ahead of the 2027 election.
While addressing a press conference in Kaduna, the chairman of the group, Hamza Bala Lawal, who was flanked by its secretary, Ibrahim Muhammad Inuwa, listed northern politicians suffering political embarrassment, including former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, and Senator Abdulazeez Yari, the former Zamfara State Governor who was subsequently rubbished by the government when he tried to become the Senate President of the country.

Lawal called on the judiciary, security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to abide by their oath of allegiance to the people and the Constitution of Nigeria, stressing that any injustice against the northern region will be resisted.

The group also cautioned politicians against being accomplices in the plots to undermine the northerners, insisting they are aware of moves by certain politicians to destabilize the region, especially the commercial city of Kano and Plateau states, respectively.

Lawal said, “Another Northerner who has also been humiliated since coming into being of this government is Senator Ali Ndume, who by right and qualification ought to be the Senate Leader but has since been relegated to be the deputy despite having served in that position in the past in the last 9th Assembly.

“Perhaps, the major casualty in the plot against the North is the former Governor of Kano State, Sen Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is being harassed on a daily basis to give up the mandate that the people of the state have given to his party in the general election.

“We are however calling on President Tinubu not to do anything that would truncate the peace and tranquility that exist in the country by allowing the will of the people in all electoral contests to prevail at all times.”

The chairman of the group also posited that Nigerians are witnesses to what is going on in the Court of Appeal concerning the governorship poll in Zamfara, Plateau and Kano States, where the opposition parties won the states at the ballot box and the attempt by the Federal Government to snatch these states from the winning political parties.

He added, “What is even more embarrassing is the case of Kano where the Court of Appeal is still finding it hard to defend its verdict on the election which many have come to see as very ignoble and horrible. The fact that the verdict is tainted was further shown when the NNPP tried to secure the certified true copy of the judgment revealed the underhand dealings that must have happened with the document revealing contradictory outcomes.

“While some paragraphs upheld the election of Gov Abba Kabir Yusuf of the NNPP as duly elected. The embarrassment created by the nasty scenario is yet to abate as we speak as the action has further put the judiciary in the negative spot in the minds of right thinking Nigerians who have lost faith in that vital arm of the government.

George insisted that the LP does not have the structure to win national elections. Hence, Obi should consider returning to the party. He said: “The Labour Party doesn’t have the root.

The LP was a movement; they don’t have a solid root. LP came out of anger, it doesn’t have the kind of root we have. LP is a wind. Where was Obi? We can still talk to him if he wants to.

Lawal also charged the judiciary to resist the “brazen injustice and theft of people mandates” in the Northern region.

He further decried what he called the ruling APC plot’s to turn the country into a one-party state by utilising instruments of the state to arm-twist and browbeat the opposition into submission.

The chairman of the group also posited that Nigerians are witnesses to what is going on in the Court of Appeal with respect to the governorship poll in Zamfara, Plateau and Kano States, where the opposition parties won the states at the ballot box and the attempt by the Federal Government to snatch these states from the winning political parties.

Politics › Nigerians Angry With Govt Officials Over High Cost Of Living, Shettima Admits. by Gjrich(op): 7:21am On Dec 10, 2023
As many Nigerians groan in poverty due to the rising cost of living occasioned by unprecedented inflation, Vice-President Kashim Shettima has said the poor in the country are angry with government officials and other members of the elite, who constitute the minority.

The vice-president said this at the graduation ceremony of the Executive Intelligence Management Course 16 participants from different security agencies and nominees of state governments in Abuja on Saturday. The event was organised by the National Institute for Security Studies.

This is the first time a senior government official is admitting the biting hardship in the country, which has been aggravated since President Bola Tinubu took over the reins of government on May 29, 2023.

In his inauguration speech, the President had declared that subsidy on petrol was gone for good, and hours after that statement, the pump price of petrol jumped from N238-N263 per litre to a minimum of N500. It currently sells for between N580 and N615.

As Nigerians were adjusting to the new reality and the attendant increase in the prices of goods and services, including transport fares, the Federal Government announced the decision to allow the exchange rate of the naira to major international currencies float and be determined by demand and supply.

That decision immediately led to a significant depreciation of the local currency, which peaked at N465.07 against the United States dollar just weeks before Tinubu’s inauguration. The scarcity of dollars and other major international currencies led the naira to climb to over 1,000 against the greenback.

Just on Friday, the naira fell to an all-time low of N1,099.05/$ at the official Investor and Exporter forex window to cap what had been a turbulent couple of months for the national currency.

This signifies a 30.36 per cent decline from its closing rate of N843.07/$ according to data from the FMDQ Securities Exchange. That was the lowest rate that the naira had closed since the Central Bank of Nigeria moved to adopt the I&E window as the official trading channel for the currency.

That day, the currency began trading at N844.10/$ before closing at N1,099.05/$. Since June, the naira has lost more than 40 per cent of its value, adding to inflationary pressure in the country.

Saturday PUNCH reported that many families risked celebrating the approaching Christmas and New Year in hardship due to the hike in the prices of goods and services, and were devising life-changing ways to cut costs.

Shettima, however, said on Saturday, “All of us here belong to a tiny segment of the Nigerian population. And you don’t need a soothsayer to tell you that the poor are angry with us. Go to the slums and mingle with the poor. I am a native of Maiduguri (Borno State Capital). Anytime a rich man brought a new car to his house, it (the house) used to be a place of pilgrimage.

“People (used to) go and see not out of anger, but out of admiration. But now, as we cruise around in our bulletproof cars, one will see contempt in the eyes of the poor. We have to improve the quality of governance. And what we have is a tiny window of not more than 10 to 20 years. Let’s improve the quality of governance.”

He also noted that creating jobs and giving hope to the populace would help curb insecurity in the country.

The VP added, “Let’s create jobs; let’s give hope to the populace. And once we create jobs, all this madness of insecurity will disappear. There won’t be Boko Haram and banditry if this is done, especially for us from the North. We can blame the bandits, but we in leadership positions owe it to posterity to address this.

“They (the poor) are the most neglected segment of our society. You can hardly differentiate between them and their animals. Even the animals they rear belong to those in the city. So, there have to be kinetic and non-kinetic solutions to all the problems. Be it the IPOB agitation in the South-East; be it the challenges in the South-South; be it Boko Haram or rural banditry in the North-East, North-West, and North-Central.”

He, however, urged the citizens to be patient with the President and support his efforts to reposition the country.

“I want to ask you to give the President the benefit of the doubt. Let us support you. Let us rally around and be reassured that he is determined to redefine the meaning and concept of modern leadership, and is ever ready to reposition the Nigerian nation. But without the support of you and I, he can’t do much,” the VP said.

He berated those seeking to secede from the country, noting that they “hardly think beyond their noses.”

Shettima said, “It’s easy to predict failure. But what about success, what is the end result of failure? It is destruction. Just two million Syrians knocking on the doors of Europe, and they caused Brexit. They caused the emergence of Trump in America. So, how do you proceed? Those people who are agitating for the breakup of this nation, or the implosion of this country, they hardly think beyond their noses.

“They don’t think beyond the depth of their pockets. Surviving their way on the growth of the innocent and the agonies of our people will not do us any good. “

Also at the event, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi, said the service would soon commence the production of unmanned aerial vehicles, AK-47s, and other weapons that would be used by its personnel.

According to him, this is to reduce the heavy reliance on foreign countries for weapons and the huge resources for the procurement of such weapons.

He noted that when the plans materialise, the service would deploy the weapon across the country.

The DSS boss said, “We shall support the institute in its training programmes. I care for the welfare of our staff members, active and retired. We shall never go back on that. We’ll also continue to pay attention to our research and development.

“In fact, sooner or later, we shall start eating what we produce, and we will produce what we eat. This is coded. It means that we shall start deploying some of the assets we have or the platforms we produce by ourselves, including unmanned aerial vehicles. We are producing our AK-47.

“When we reach the destination, we will save the country from the pain of the resources being chunked out to buy such weapons.”

He also assured other security agencies of the DSS commitment to providing them with credible intelligence.

Bichi added, “We shall continue to appreciate all the agencies that partner with us in the journey so far. And I promise the other security agencies that the DSS will continue to provide you with proactive intelligence to drive your operations.

“We have achieved that in different parts of the country. And I have to thank the military and the police especially for giving us that opportunity and appreciating our own input in the fight against terrorism and insurgency in different parts of the country. We are going to sustain that by the grace of God and for the generality of the people.”

He also urged residents of Plateau and Kaduna states to shun their hostilities and convert them to jobs.

Bichi said, “Let me just advise us, especially the people of Plateau and Kaduna. It is now time for you and me to return Plateau to its 1970s situation where Plateau or Jos was seen as a tourist-attractive state or city. But with conflict, all the industries in Plateau are gone. No peace. You are idle. So please, turn your hostilities into jobs.

“We have seen that it happens in so many places. The Kanuri and Fulani turn their hostilities into jobs. Kano and Zaira also did. So, please do that and save the nation from disaster, because there is no point that from 1991 to date and at the interval of four years you are having ethno-religious conflicts.

“It’s not good. Talk to yourselves. Talk to your people. Be focused. See the development of Plateau. See development and security.

The DSS DG also urged Nigerians to desist from disparaging their leaders.

He said, “We have the indices of a great nation. So, it’s a question of how do you get out of that. Let us avoid simmering or disparaging our leaders. You can’t go anywhere by doing so. Most especially we are in a democratic dispensation.

“If you are patient enough, you will be able to achieve what somebody achieved now or in the near future. Let us talk to ourselves.

Crime › Was Nigerian Student Arrested In USA For Impregnating 4 Female Police Officers? by Gjrich(op): 6:47am On Dec 10, 2023

Nigerian international student arrested for impregnating 4 female police officers in US.

A Nigerian international student named Jamil Ezebuike, from Anambra State, has found himself entangled in a legal web in the United States for impregnating police women.

Ezebuike, pursuing a course in women’s security at a distinguished university in New Jersey, stands accused of impregnating not one, but four female police officers.

His arrest has sent shockwaves through the community, unravelling a complex narrative of deceit and clandestine relationships.

Ezebuike’s journey to the US took shape under the guise of an international student, armed with a non-immigrant study visa.

As an aspiring professional in women’s security, he had seemingly immersed himself in a course that aligns with his academic pursuits.

The intricate tale of his arrest unveils a carefully orchestrated deception.

Operating under the radar, Ezebuike managed to engage romantically with four female police officers simultaneously.

The relationships remained concealed until one of the officers, who had been impregnated by Ezebuike, discovered the truth.

What adds a layer of intrigue to the story is the officer’s decision to investigate further, revealing Ezebuike’s involvement with three other women in the police force.

The revelation prompted the officer to report the situation, leading to Ezebuike’s apprehension by security authorities.

The legal repercussions loom large as he faces the prospect of a court arraignment.

If found guilty, the consequences may extend to deportation back to Nigeria, marking a significant downturn in his academic and personal pursuits.

This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities surrounding international relationships and the ethical considerations that come with studying abroad.

The legal proceedings will not only determine Ezebuike’s fate but also underscore the importance of transparency and adherence to ethical standards, particularly in a cross-cultural academic environment.

As the story unfolds, it casts a spotlight on the intersection of personal choices, legal consequences, and the broader implications for international students navigating foreign educational landscapes.

Politics › JAPA: Feel Free To Leave The Country – Bishop Kukah Tells Young Nigerians. by Gjrich(op): 6:34am On Dec 10, 2023
Feel free to leave the country– Bishop Kukah tells young Nigerians.

Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, has advised young Nigerians planning to leave the country not to waste any more time.

Bishop Kukah gave the advise while addressing graduands of Veritas University during its convocation ceremony in Abuja on Saturday, December 9.

The renowned cleric prayed that the right and conducive environment be created so that those left behind can compete favourably with their foreign counterparts.

“I encourage young people who want to leave Nigeria to please, feel free to leave. The country is big enough. We can assure you that by the time you settle down in the United States of America or wherever you have gone, you will discover that Nigeria needs you,” said Kukah, who is the Pro-chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of Veritas University.

“And for those you left behind, our hope and prayer is that they will be competing at the same level with you. We have everything that it takes to turn the corner.

“We are Veritas University will continue to inspire and shape the new generation so that the change we expect in our country is not the change we expect from politicians.

“It is the change that will come with a big intellectual understanding of the complex nature of this country. So every graduate who walks out of the portals of Veritas will be truly equipped mentally and intellectually to conquer Nigeria.”

Kukah urged the graduates to remain focused and remember the school they were leaving behind. He also appealed to teachers to strive to be role models for the students.

“The quality of help and support you will get from the alumni will be determined by how they left this university,” he said.

“As you prepare to spend a new chapter in your life, I encourage you to remain focused on your dream. Do not forget your alma mater because you are standing on the shoulders of those who have gone before you. Do not forget the sacrifices you have made.

“This is why we also appeal to teachers to become sources of inspiration because the quality of help and support you will get from the alumni will be determined by how they left this university. If they leave this university feeling sorrowful, they are not likely to look back.

“So we want to encourage you parents to please endeavour to serve as models and mentors to these young people. Remember it could have been done anywhere. It’s not by accident that they are in Nigeria,” he added.

Katsina Governor joins military operation to rescue abducted civilian, foil bandits’ attack.

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, on Saturday, joined a combined team of security personnel and military troops to foil an attack on the residents of Zakka village in Safana Local Government Area.

During the joint operation, which Governor Radda witnessed, a 33-year-old man abducted by armed bandits was rescued, according to a statement by Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed.

Kaula Mohammed, who is the Chief Press Secretary, CPS, to Governor Radda, said his principal was in Safana local government on Saturday to flag off an empowerment programme sponsored by the Deputy Speaker of the Katsina State House of Assembly, when he received a distress security call of a planned attack on Zakka village by terrorists.

“After the intelligence report on the planned terrorist attack was revealed to Governor Radda around 1pm, he immediately called off his involvement in the colourful empowerment programme of the Katsina House of Assembly Deputy Speaker.

“Mr Governor and a few members of his entourage then joined a combined team of security personnel, comprising men of the Nigerian Police, Air Component of Operation Hadarin Daji, ground troops of the Nigerian Army, and personnel of the Community Watch Corps, to engage the terrorists at Zakka Forest before the criminals advanced to the hills.

“A 33-year-old man was bravely rescued by the gallant troops after a heavy gun battle with the terrorists, which lasted almost 30 minutes. The terrorists were fortunate to escape without suffering any casualties after their callous mission was thwarted.

“After repelling the bandits, Governor Radda directed that the abducted man rescued by troops be taken to the hospital for urgent treatment, as he was shot in the leg by the bandits,” he said.

A cross-section of people in the area interviewed expressed happiness over the quick response from the governor and hoped for its sustenance.

They said the action displayed by the governor has clearly demonstrated his unwavering commitment to fighting insecurity in the state.

Travel › Canada New Study Visa Requirements; Raises Proof Of Funds From $10k To $20k by Gjrich(op): 7:21pm On Dec 09, 2023
Canada announces new visa requirements; raises proof of funds from $10,000 to $20,000
This change will apply to new study permit applications received on or after January 1, 2024,” the statement reads in part.

Canadian authorities have announced that “cost-of-living financial requirement for study permit applicants” for international students will increase from $10,000 to $20,000, starting from January 1, 2024.

Marc Miller, Canadian Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, made this announcement in a statement on Thursday.

“Starting January 1, 2024, the cost-of-living financial requirement for study permit applicants will be raised so that international students are financially prepared for life in Canada.

“For 2024, a single applicant will need to show they have $20,635, representing 75% of LICO, in addition to their first year of tuition and travel costs. This change will apply to new study permit applications received on or after January 1, 2024,” the statement reads in part.

For close to two decades, study permit applicants for international students have remained at $10,000.

This review, which takes effect from January 1, “will help prevent student vulnerability and exploitation,” the statement added.

This comes days after the United Kingdom introduced a new set of rules that would make it more difficult for Nigerians and others to obtain a visa.

Politics › Sanusi To Tinubu: The President Shouldn’t Be The Petroleum Minister by Gjrich(op): 1:38am On Dec 08, 2023
Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has declared that the President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu should not double as the Minister of Petroleum.

Sanusi made the submission on Thursday while speaking at The Bank Directors Summit held at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja.

According to him, the advice is necessary in order to have someone who can be held accountable because if anything goes wrong in the petroleum sector, people would not want to speak against the President.

The former Emir of Kano also called for the audit of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), noting that this call was what cost him his job as the CBN Governor.

“Let me advise that the idea of the president being petroleum minister. The last president was minister of petroleum for eight years.

“When I was governor of CBN, we had a petroleum minister. So when we talk about NNPC, I could attack Diezani, now nobody can talk about petroleum because in 8 years if you talk, you are attacking the president,” he said.

President Tinubu upon assumption of office, split the Ministry of Petroleum Resources with the appointment of Ekperipe Ekpo as Minister of State, Gas Resources; and Heineken Lokpobiri as Minister of State, Petroleum Resources but retained the position of substantive Minister of Petroleum Resources for himself.

This follows the style of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari who also doubled as the Minister of Petroleum during his tenure.

But Sanusi stated during his talk that the President shouldn’t be the Minister of Petroleum as well.

Prisoners From Foreign Lands Are Working At Construction Sites In Nigeria – Senate Panel

The chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior, Adams Oshiomhole, has stated that prisoners from foreign countries are being ferried into Nigeria to work at construction sites.

He made the claim when the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, appeared before the National Assembly Joint Committees on Interior for a budget defense on Wednesday, December 6.

“Your ministry needs to regulate the issuance of the quotas very well as I have it on good authority that prisoners from foreign lands are working in Nigeria as construction workers,” Oshiomhole told the minister.

He said though it was heartwarming that the ministry surpassed its revenue targets on the issuance of expatriate quotas, the policy was giving room for expatriates to steal jobs meant for Nigerians in Nigeria.

“Many non-Nigerians are in the country, some of them live inside containers. They were being paid according to their country’s minimum wage by the construction industry that brought them. I don’t want to mention the companies’ names, but if I’m provoked, I’ll mention them.”

Responding, Tunji-Ojo said his ministry had already come up with the Expatriate Employee Network aimed at safeguarding jobs meant for Nigerians from being stolen by expatriates

Politics › Tinubu Is Only Interested In Nigeria’s Money Not Security – Northern Elders. by Gjrich(op): 10:48pm On Dec 06, 2023
Everything about Tinubu shows he’s only interested in Nigeria’s money not security” – Northern Elders.

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) says President Bola Tinubu’s words, deeds and body language have shown that the president is not interested in security.

A top-placed member of the forum, Professor Usman Yusuf, made this allegation in an interview on AriseTV.

“Our president and commander in chief, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, from his words, deeds, and body language, is not interested in security,” Yusuf said, adding they: “All he’s interested in is the economy, where the money is, and he’s planted his people. Security, banditry, and others appear irritant to him.

“We don’t see the president hands-on with our security. Our military is not supervised by civilian authority; they’ve gone rogue, dropping bombs on our people, and they’re not answerable to anybody. In the United States, where we copied the presidential system, the military is subordinate to civilian authority.”

The northern elder further questioned the role of the minister of defence, claiming that the president has outsourced the security of the country to the military.

He also called for an inquiry into the bomb attack in Kaduna, saying the military cannot investigate itself.

His words: “Whatever the president is planning to do, the military cannot investigate itself. We’ve had several incidences, and there have been no outcomes.

“There should be an independent judicial panel headed by a retired CJN, a former defence chief, traditional leaders, and religious leaders who are interested in protecting the people,” he said.

'We have a Muslim president and vice president, but they are killing Muslims' - Former NHIS boss, Prof Usman Yusuf laments about the erroneous Kaduna bombing incident

Former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof Usman Yusuf, has decried the erroneous Kaduna bombing incident. Residents of Tudun Biri Village in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna were celebrating Maulud Nabbiy (Prophet Muhammad’s birthday) when the Nigerian Army erroneously dropped bombs in their midst, killing over 120 persons.

In an interview with Arise TV, Yusuf said the optics for the Nigerian Army as well as the presidency is not good. He stated that during the build up to the 2023 general elections, Islamic clerics in the region sold a fraudulent Muslim-Muslim ticket to them. He said with the President and the Vice President being Muslims, Muslims in the North are still being killed.

‘’The Muslim clerics in the North came and sold this fraudulent Muslim-Muslim ticket and we have Muslim Vice President and Muslim President. Our people in the North are saying you are killing Muslims, inflicting a lot more pain on Muslims. You closed the borders along all the seven Northern states because you want to go to war with Niger. You are inflicting pain. Now you are killing Muslims. Look at the Military hierarchy, people are being mischievous. Look at the operational Military hierarchy and look at their religion. Politics › 5,000 Federal Workers May Not Get November And December Salaries. by Gjrich(op): 2:23pm On Nov 30, 2023
5,000 Federal Workers May Not Get November And December Salaries.

Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Folasade Yemi-Esan.
Five thousand Federal Government workers may not receive their November and December salaries on time due to discrepancies in their records.

The National President of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), Tommy Okon, disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday, November 28.

He said 2,772 workers had been confirmed and sent to the integrated payroll and personnel information system (IPPIS) for payment. However, there were still discrepancies in the dates of birth and first appointments of about 5,000 federal workers.

He said six teams were working to ensure the exercise finished on schedule. He also advised affected civil servants to regularly check the Head of Service of the Federation’s website for updates.

“As of today, only those who had earlier completed their verification exercise but were mistakenly delisted have had their salaries restored, while 5,000 civil servants still have discrepancies on their date of first appointment and dates of birth…

“It is advisable for a public servant to develop the habit of checking the HOS website for regular updates. We have confirmed that the salary for November 2023 is concluded. Therefore, those affected will not get their salaries for November,” he added.

He implored the Federal Government to find a quick solution to the problem.

Okon urged union members to be patient as, according to him, everything was being done within the limits of the law to ensure that the issues were resolved quickly.

He appealed to the Federal Government through the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation to expedite action to ensure that December salaries were not delayed.

The ICIR reported in October that federal civil servants who gathered in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to be captured by the IPPIS accused the government of neglecting them.

The verification exercise brought civil servants from all over Nigeria to Abuja and was meant to verify their appointments.

The exercise, for employees yet to be captured by the IPPIS, took place at the Public Service Institute at Kubwa and the Conference Hall of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation.

A civil servant from Cross River State who chose to remain anonymous for fear of being victimised told The ICIR that nobody was attending to the workers at both venues, adding they were stranded for days.

He also lamented the suspension of their salaries by the Federal Government because the IPPIS did not capture them.

“Even if you do that, are you supposed to stop people’s salaries? What they are doing is extremely wrong. You asked federal staff to move from their stations to Abuja, and the verification portal is not working,” the worker said.

Another civil servant who preferred anonymity told The ICIR that no provision was made for accommodation, transportation, and feeding despite the increasing costs of living and transport in the city and the nation.

“I saw a woman and her little child sleeping on the floor when I left the venue around 8:30 p.m. yesterday.

“I also saw a woman with her newborn baby at the verification centre on Monday. It is a very serious issue,” said the worker.

But speaking to The ICIR on the matter, the Director of Information and Communication at the office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mohammed Abdullahi, blamed the unruly attitude of the civil servants for the delay in the verification. He said the portal was working effectively.

Abdullahi added that the verification exercise was mainly to free the civil service of ghost workers.

About 17,000 affected federal civil servants nationwide participated in the activity.

A circular dated October 3, 2023, was issued by the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation with reference number HCSF/HRM/M.1125/T4/194 regarding the activity.

The ICIR reported that the Head of Service of the Federation (HoSF), Folashade Yemi-Esan, said 61,446 civil servants from various government ministries, departments, and agencies were verified on the IPPIS.

Yemi-Esan disclosed this during the 43rd Ministerial Media Briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team at the State House, Abuja, in July 2022.

She explained that 3,657 civil servants were dragged to the Independent and Corrupt Practices and Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) over their failure to get verified on the platform.

According to her, at least 1,618 applicants floated illegal or fake appointment letters, and 874 workers were suspended from the IPPIS platform.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, defaulting airlines must pay compensations for flight cancelations and delays.
He said this in Abuja yesterday during a meeting with the heads of agencies under the ministry.

“We are not deaf to the cries of Nigerians about delays and canceled flights. The law is there and we are looking at how to enforce those laws for compensation of Nigerians who bear the brunt of cancellation of flights and disrupting the activities.

“The process of grounding the airline or taking the airlines to court will create more problems. So if the reason for the delay and cancellation of flight is their fault they must pay compensation. And what I am suggesting is that if they don’t get cash back they must get some rebate when they buy next ticket.

“I have set up a committee to look into it such that they can generate a code that they can use when they want to purchase the next ticket.

“We are concerned about the passenger satisfaction and the safety of the air travelers,” he said. The minister directed the Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to prepare a weekly catalogue of canceled flights.

He also directed the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau to conclude all incidents of air accidents and mishaps in the next 10 days.

He said: “For the recent incidents that happened recently, some minor, and others classified as serious incidents although there were no fatalities. The NSIB is investigating these incidents and I have directed them that within 10 days from today they must submit their report of the incidents and what actually transpired.

Billionaire TY Danjuma Builds Multi-Million Naira Medical Centre In Enugu State

The retired General acknowledged the dedication of predominantly female medical professionals who chose to provide their services to humanity through the center.

General TY Danjuma (Rtd) inaugurated a multi-million Naira Goodwill Medical Centre (GMC)

The state-of-the-art medical facility, fully funded by the TY Danjuma Foundation (TYDF), is situated at Umuchigbo, Iji Nike, in the heart of Abapka Nike Community within the Enugu East Local Government Area.

The visionary project was conceived by Uche Amazigo, a distinguished Pro-Poor Public Health Specialist and former director of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Prof Amazigo, one of the few female Africans to have led a specialised United Nations Agency, played a pivotal role in establishing a highly successful multilateral partnership in global health.

During the inauguration ceremony, General TY Danjuma expressed his admiration for Prof. Amazigo's commitment to the foundation. He commended her for serving as a trustee pro bono for over eight years. General Danjuma reminisced about the initial encounter with Prof. Amazigo in October 2010, highlighting a meeting in March 2022 when she, along with two other female professors, approached him with a request for financial support to build and equip a low-cost, high-efficiency medical center.

The retired General acknowledged the dedication of predominantly female medical professionals who chose to provide their services to humanity through the center. He praised Prof. Amazigo, stating, "Men will take your money and tell you stories, and I commend Prof. Amazigo and her team for a job well done."

In his remarks, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, represented by Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai, commended General Danjuma's detribalised disposition.

He acknowledged the General's commitment to humanity and expressed gratitude on behalf of the state for the foundation's intervention in healthcare. Governor Mbah stated the need for collaborative efforts between the government and individuals or groups willing to invest in the state's development.

Livinus Anike, the Chairman of Enugu East Council Area, praised General Danjuma for his contributions to Nigeria's development. He assured Prof. Amazigo of the local government's support and readiness to assist the medical center in areas deemed fit.

During her address, Prof. Amazigo shared her experiences working with WHO in impoverished communities across 19 countries. She explained that the spirit of giving and a desire to honor her students at the University of Nigeria Nsukka inspired the idea of the medical center. She expressed gratitude to General TY Danjuma and the TYDF trustees for the special grant that facilitated the completion of the center in just one year and one month.

Prof. Amazigo detailed the GMC's services, including Maternal and Child Health, General Primary Healthcare, Laboratory, Eye Health, Prevention and Treatment of Communicable Diseases, General Surgical, Accident and Emergency services. The center also plans to enroll 1,000 or more indigent people into the National Health Insurance Authority/Group, Individual, Family Social Health Insurance Programme (NHIA GIFSHIP)

Ibrahim Traore Launched The Construction Of Burkina Faso First Gold Refinery.

Burkina Faso’s junta-led government has launched the construction of the country’s first refinery for gold, Burkina’s main mineral resource, officials said.

The refinery which was launched on Thursday will have a production capacity of around 400 kilograms (880 pounds) of gold per day.

The CEO of the refinery’s co-managing company Marena Gold, Ismael Siby made this known on Thursday.

Siby said the first 22-carat gold bars would leave the refinery in 11 months, adding that the project would create 100 direct jobs and 5,000 indirect jobs.

“There’s no longer any question of us taking our gold abroad for refining. We’ll refine it on-site because we know the real content of the raw gold that comes out. That’s very important,” Burkina Faso’s military leader Captain Ibrahim Traore said at a launch ceremony in the capital Ouagadougou.

“For some time now, gold has been (Burkina’s) leading export product,” he added.
“But we have no control over gold… today we have decided to put a whole network in place”.

The mining sector accounts for 14.3 percent of Burkina’s state revenue, according to data from the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).

However gold production in the country fell from 66.8 tonnes in 2021 to 57.6 tonnes in 2022 – marking a 13.7 percent drop.

Traore added that “a lot of gold leaves Burkina fraudulently, and this moreover helps to fuel terrorism”.

The country is battling a jihadist insurgency that spilled over from neighboring Mali in 2015 and has left more than 17,000 civilians and soldiers dead and displaced two million people.

Violence led to the closure of four industrial mines and the abandonment of nearly 700 gold-panning sites last year, according to official figures.

Hamas Breaks Ceasefire Agreement And Refuses To Release Hostages, Israel Responds.

Hamas has officially broken the ceasefire deal and is refusing to release the next group of hostages. The terrorist government is claiming multiple things, including that not enough aid trucks were allowed to enter Northern Gaza.

Of note is that such a condition was not part of the deal, which means Hamas is actively breaking the agreement. Also of note is that aid trucks were allowed to enter Northern Gaza some hours before this news.

Still, Hamas is claiming that Israel has violated the ceasefire, and the latest hostage release has been delayed.

This is who Hamas is. This is what Hamas was always going to do. There was never any real chance of this four-day ceasefire and hostage deal going off without a hitch. The terrorists in Gaza have more to gain by playing games than by abiding by the terms, largely because they know they have the backing of the global press if Israel now retaliates.

Still, Israel must retaliate, and they’ve already laid down an ultimatum.

What Hamas is trying to do right now is push the envelope. Its leaders want to get everything they can while the door is still cracked open and the bombs have stopped dropping. If they can get extra aid trucks, which will be stolen by terrorists, they’ll do that. If they can force the release of more convicted murderers and attempted murderers, they’ll do that.

That should not be allowed, though. If Hamas doesn’t follow through as demanded, hostilities should resume and they should not cease until the terrorist government no longer exists. There should be no second chances if the hostages aren’t handed over at midnight. That is the scam Hamas has gotten away with over and over throughout the decades.

Datti Ahmed’s Baze University Banned For Five Years

The Nigerian Law School has banned Baze University in Abuja from admitting students into its Law Faculty.
The Acting Secretary and Director of Administration of the Nigerian Law School, Aderonke Osho, made this known in a statement on Friday, which was made available to journalists.

Osho state the institution was banned for consistently violating its admission quota of 50 students per session as approved by the Council of Legal Education (CLE).

She said the ban was a sequel to the findings of the CLE, which showed that the university’s Law Faculty currently had a backlog of over 347 law students waiting to be admitted into the Nigerian Law School.

Osho added that the University runs a three (3)-year LL.B programme for some UTME candidates without the approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and CLE.

The statement reads: “At its Quarterly Meeting held&y on November 23, 2023, the Council of Legal Education (CLE) presided over by its Chairman, Chief Emeka Ngige, SAN, OFR, considered the report of the Accreditation panel to the Faculty of Law, Baze University, Abuja.

“It emerged from the findings by the Panel led by the Director-General, Nigerian Law School, Prof Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, that Baze University consistently and most flagrantly had contravened its admission quota of 50 students per session as approved by the Council of Legal Education with the result that the Faculty is currently having a backlog of over 347 law students waiting to be admitted into the Nigerian Law School.

“Since 2017 the Council of Legal Education has grappled with the excesses of Baze University by admitting over 750 law students which ordinarily would have taken about 15 years of admission based on the quota allotted to the University.

“Baze University runs a three (3)-year LL.B programme for some UTME candidates without the approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB and Council of Legal Education.”

The statement further noted that “Under the NUC Minimum Benchmark Academic Standard (BMAS) for law degree programme in Nigerian Universities, Law is a five (5)-year programme for UTME candidates and four (4)-year for Direct Entry students.

“The Council of Legal Education, after thorough consideration of these infractions, resolved as follows: The imposition of a moratorium on admission of law students to the Faculty of Law, Baze University, Abuja, with immediate effect;

“The moratorium will last in the first instance for a period of 5 years and may be renewed if no satisfactory action is taken to remedy the situation.

“The Council, in the interest of the innocent students, parents and guardians, will use the 5 year period to find ways to deal with the backlog of law students admitted by Baze University in excess of its admission quota.

3. The BOI boss revealed that discussion is already in the pipeline for a financing agreement for the refinery

Dr Olasupo Olusi, the Managing Director of the Bank of Industry Limited, has said it will collaborate with modular refineries to solve economic challenges in the country.
He said this during his visit to Waltersmith Refinery, Ibigwa, in Imo State, on Tuesday, November 22, 2023.

The MD claimed in a Guardian report that to create local content, the BOI has partnered with Waltersmith and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB). He said that this would aid in controlling the nation's inflation and other economic problems. Olusi mentioned that nationalizing the country's energy supplies was part of the strategy for the localization of industry.

The BoI boss said: So it is for this reason that we are already in partnership with NCDMB and Waltersmith. We have talks that are in a very advanced stage of the financing agreement to support the growth and development of modular refineries in general and Waltersmith in particular.

We are very open and committed to supporting modular refineries. If we can support modular refineries more, we will be able to manage inflation better and of course, the physical pressure in terms of all the noise around the minimum wage may be reduced.
