Politics / Controversial Judgements: Us Slams Visa Ban On CJN Ariwoola Nweze & 3 Others by Gjrich(m): 6:43pm On Jul 14, 2023
CONTROVERSIAL JUDGEMENTS: US SLAMS VISA BAN ON CJN ARIWOOLA NWEZE, MUSA DATTIJO, 3 OTHERS.

The United States government has placed a visa ban on the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Olukayode Ariwoola, and six other members of the Supreme Court of Nigeria over their delivery of controversial and inciting judgments.
Besides Ariwoola, the other apex court justices whose identities were revealed by a highly placed source, are Musa Dattijo Mohammed, Centus Nweze and Justice Kudirat Kekere Ekun.
It was learnt their ban was connected to questionable judgements they gave, including the controversial judgment that made Senator Hope Uzodinma governor of Imo State in 2020, as well as the judgements that recognised Senate President Godswill Akpabio and his predecessor Senator Ahmed Lawan as winners of their senatorial elections.

Recall that Uzodimma who came fourth in the 2019 governorship election was controversially declared winner of election by the Supreme Court.

In the case of Lawan and Akpabio, the Supreme Court ruled, in separate judgements, that both senators, who didn’t participate in their party’s (All Progressives Congress) primary election are the party’s senatorial candidates.

Lawan and Akpabio were presidential aspirants at the time the party held primaries for their senatorial districts which legally ruled them out of the senatorial contest.

While they both stepped down for Bola Tinubu who later won the presidential ticket, senatorial candidates had emerged from their senatorial zones to represent the party in the election.

Bashir Machina and Udom Ekpoudom won the primaries and emerged senatorial candidates for Yobe North and Akwa Ibom North West respectively
and their mandates were recognised by High and Appeal courts. But the
Apex court overturned the judgements of the two lower courts.

However, Pointblanknews learnt that the embattled Supreme Court justices got wind of their ban to enter the US after they were denied entry to the country to attend a seminar.

The source, a ranking Supreme Court official who pleaded anonymity, confided in Pointblanknews that Justice Ekun was the first to be informed of her visa ban.

The source added the ban has become a burden on Justices of the Supreme Court.

The source said, “And that signals the Justices have received indicate that the U.K and the European Union have been asked to consider actions too by the U.S authority.”

The source added the judgements on cases involving Uzodimma, Akpabio and Lawan, which raised some much upset within the polity and “some other cases were considered to be against democracy and rule of law.”

Recall that the Supreme Court in January, 2020, nullified the election of Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the governor of Imo State.

The apex court declared Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the March 9 governorship election in the state.

In the unanimous judgment of the seven-member panel, read by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the apex court agreed that results in 388 polling units were unlawfully excluded during the collation of the final governorship election result in Imo State.

Justice Kekere-Ekun said with the results from the 388 polling units added, Mr Uzodinma polled a majority of the lawful votes and ought to have been declared the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The judge did not provide the details of the new votes scored by each of the candidates after the addition of the results from the 388 polling units.
Consequently, she voided and set aside the declaration of Mr lhedioha as the winner of the 2019 governorship election in the South-East state.

The court ordered that the certificate of return wrongly or unlawfully issued to Mr lhedioha be immediately withdrawn by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and a fresh one issued to Mr Uzodinma as the elected governor of the state.

Also, the Supreme Court in February 2023, declared Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the authentic candidate of the APC for Yobe North Senatorial District for the 25 February general election.

The court made the declaration in a three-against-two split judgement of its five-member panel. The panel was led by Centus Nweze.

The majority judgement held that the decisions of the Federal High Court in Yobe and the Court of Appeal in Abuja “were perverse and must be set aside.”

The APC had challenged the judgements of the lower courts which affirmed Bashir Machina as the candidate of Yobe North Senatorial District for the election.

It urged the Supreme Court to nullify the two previous verdicts and legitimise APC’s National Working Committee’s forwarding of Mr Lawan’s name to INEC as flagbearer for the poll.

In a related development, the Supreme Court in February declared Godswill Akpabio as the validly nominated candidate for Akwa-Ibom North-West senatorial seat election holding on 25 February.

APC had challenged the decision of the Court of Appeal, Abuja, which sacked Mr Akpabio as its candidate.

Mr Akpabio is a former governor of Akwa-Ibom State and ex-minister of Niger Delta Affairs.

In Mr Akpabio’s place, the appellate court had on 14 November 2022 ordered INEC to recognise Udom Ekpoudom, a retired deputy inspector general of police, as the authentic candidate of the party.

Delivering the unanimous judgement of its five-member panel led by Kudirat Kekere-Ekun on Friday, the Supreme Court held that the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal were wrong to have assumed jurisdiction in the suit because the issue of candidate nomination lies squarely with political parties.

Tinubu To Tribunal: ‘Don’t accept my Chicago varsity, NYSC certificates, forfeiture judgment in evidence’

The tendering of some documents by the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in proof of his petition against the declaration of Tinubu as winner of the February 25 presidential election was on Friday opposed by the president

The concerned documents are Tinubu’s Chicago University Certificate, a discharge Certificate from the National Youth Services Corps (NYSC), a copy of the transcript from South West College, and a membership card of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Others are a notarization judgment of the USA court for criminal forfeiture of assets said to belong to Tinubu, a certificate of Service from Mobil Oil Nigeria Plc, in addition to a printout of his alleged Guinean passport.

Aside from President Tinubu, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and his party, who are all respondents in Atiku and PDP’s petition against the outcome of the recent presidential election, also objected to the admissibility of the documents.

All the documents were tendered on Friday by one Mike Enahoro-Ebah, who testified as the 27th witness of the petitioners.

74 Witnesses Pending As Tribunal Resumes Hearing Of Atiku, PDP’s Petition.

Out of the 100 witnesses expected to be called by the opposition party to prove its case, 26 witnesses have so far been examined.

Lawyers troop in for the pre-hearing at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, still have 74 more witnesses to call to testify at the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Out of the 100 witnesses expected to be called by the opposition party to prove its case, 26 witnesses have so far been examined.

Following the emergence of the then-candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, as Nigeria’s president, the PDP challenged the outcome of the February 25 presidential election.

Runner-up Abubakar, a former Vice President, is one of the aggrieved parties before the tribunal, asking the court to nullify Tinubu’s victory.

Others include the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who came third in the keenly contested election.

On May 20, the PDP candidate had indicated his plan to call “no more than 100 witnesses” to the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal.

Counsel to the petitioners, Chris Uche told the court that all the parties had met, considered, and agreed on the number of witnesses, duration, and examination of witnesses.

Uche added that though the new time given them to call the witnesses is seven weeks, they would need three weeks since the issues were getting narrower.

However, a month after, the main opposition party has so far called 26 witnesses to prove its case.

In the coming days, the party is scheduled to call 74 more witnesses in its legal quest to sack Tinubu as Nigeria’s President.

On Tuesday, the court resumed the hearing of the PDP’s Petition.

RMAFC: Why We Approved 114% Salary Increase For President, VP, Govs, Others.

The Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has explained why it approved a 114 per cent increase in the salaries of elected politicians, including the President, vice president, governors, lawmakers as well as judicial and public office holders.

RMAFC is saddled with the responsibility of determining the remuneration appropriate for political officeholders including the President, Vice President, Governors, Deputy Governors, Ministers, Commissioners, Special Advisers, Legislators and the holders of the offices as mentioned in Sections 84 and 124 of this Constitution.

The commission urged the 36 states’ Houses of Assembly to hasten efforts on amendment of relevant laws to give room for upward review of remuneration packages for political, judicial and public officers.

The proposal, which was developed during ex-President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure, needs the approval of 2/3 of states assemblies before it is presented to the president for assent.

It’s not yet clear if president Tinubu will sign the bill into law when it gets to him.

According to NAN, the RMAFC Chairman, Muhammadu Shehu, represented by a federal commissioner, Rakiya Tanko-Ayuba, made the call at the presentation of reports of the reviewed remuneration package to Kebbi State governor, Dr Nasir Idris, on Tuesday in Birnin Kebbi.

He said the implementation of the reviewed remuneration packages was effective from January 1, 2023, adding that the move was in accordance with the provision of paragraph 32(d) of part 1 of the Third Schedule of the 1999 constitution of the federal government (as amended).

He said the last remuneration review was conducted in 2007, noting that it culminated in the “certain political, public and judicial office holders (salaries and allowances, etc) (Amendment) Act, 2008”.

Shehu said, “It empowers the revenue mobilisation, allocation and fiscal commission to determine the remuneration appropriate for political office holders, including the president, vice-president, governors, deputy governors, ministers, commissioners, special advisers, legislators and the holders of the offices mentioned in sections 84 and 124 of the constitution of the federal government.

“Sixteen years after the last review, it is imperative that the remuneration packages for the categories of the office holders mentioned in relevant sections of the 1999 constitution (as amended) should be reviewed.

“Pursuant to the above, your excellency may please recall that on Wednesday, 1st February, 2023, the commission held a one-day zonal public hearing on the review of the remuneration package simultaneously in all the six (6) geo-political zones of the country. The aim of the exercise was to harvest inputs/ideas from a broad spectrum of stakeholders.”

He said the commission had objectively and subjectively reviewed the salary packages in the reports, adding that it adheres to the rules of equity and fairness, risk and responsibilities, national order of precedence among others.

“The subjective criteria reflected the various expression by stakeholders through memoranda received, opinion expressed during the zonal public hearings and responses to questionnaires administered.

“The objectives of the criteria were obtained from analysis of macro-economic variables particularly the Consumer Price Index (CPI),” he noted.

The chairman added that the commission was also guided by some principles, including equity and fairness; risk and responsibilities; national order of precedence; motivation and tenure of office.

Shehu said that having considered the impact of the review on the economy, the remuneration of the political, public and judicial office holders in the country was adjusted “upward by 114%.”

The chairman explained that with respect to the judicial office holders, the commission considered the introduction of three new allowances.

He listed the allowances to include, “Professional Development Assistant: This is to allow for the provision of two law clerks to all judicial officers in the country.

“Long Service Allowance: This is to guarantee seniority/hierarchy between officers who have been on the bench for a minimum of five years and those that are appointed newly.

“Restricted or Forced Lifestyle: This is to take care of the nature of the lifestyle of judicial officers while in active service.”

25% saga: FCT residents ask court to stop Tinubu’s swearing in, extend Buhari’s tenure

Five residents of the federal capital territory (FCT) have sued the attorney-general of the federation (AGF) and the chief justice of Nigeria (CJN) seeking to stop the inauguration of Bola Tinubu as the nation’s president.

Bola Tinubu, the standard bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared the February 25 presidential poll winner with 8,794,726 votes.

However, the plaintiffs aver that Tinubu failed to secure at least 25 percent of votes cast in the FCT.

The suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/578/2023 was filed before the Abuja federal high court on April 28.

The plaintiffs — Anyaegbunam Okoye, David Adzer, Jeffrey Ucheh Osang Paul and Chibuike Nwanchukwu — sued for themselves and on behalf of other residents and registered voters in the FCT.

They are asking the court to determine whether or not they have the legality to institute the suit.

They are also asking the court to determine “whether or not the person who is to be elected president of the federal republic of Nigeria, and consequently administrator of the FCT through the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and the Federal Capital Territory Development Authority, on the first ballot is required by section 134(2)(b) of the Constitution to obtain at least 25% of the votes cast in the FCT”.

“Whether the plaintiffs and other residents and registered voters in the FCT Abuja would not be discriminated against if any state within the federal republic of Nigeria were substituted for the FCT.”

Should the questions for determination be answered in the affirmative, the plaintiffs are praying for a declaration that “no candidate in the February 25th presidential election may validly be sworn in as president and commander in chief of the armed forces of the federal republic of Nigeria without such candidate having obtained 25% of the votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja”.

The plaintiffs also want a declaration extending President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure pending when a successor is determined in accordance with the constitution.

They want the court to set aside the certificate of return issued to Tinubu and restrain the CJN and any other judicial officer from swearing in any candidate in the presidential election as president or vice-president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria until the issue is determined in court.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said a candidate must not secure 25 percent of the votes in the FCT to be declared winner because the FCT was not accorded any special status in the constitution as being “erroneously” portrayed.

Politics / We Will Pursue Outcome Of Presidential Poll To Supreme Court- Afenifere Leaders by Gjrich(m): 8:02pm On Apr 10, 2023
We”ll pursue outcome of presidential poll to Supreme Court — Afenifere Leaders.

•This is not Nigeria we fought for

The leader of the Pan-Yoruba sociopolitical group, Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, has declared that the group will take the case against the outcome of the February 25 presidential election to the Supreme Court.

In his address during a thanksgiving service held to commemorate his 95th birthday anniversary at St Phillip’s Anglican Church in Ogbo Ijebu, Ogun State, Adebanjo maintained that Nigerians should not allow their rights to be trampled upon, citing alleged electoral malpractices and brigandage during the exercise.

The octogenarian contended that his advocacy and struggle for a better Nigeria were not self-centred but aimed at liberating the masses from the shackles of poverty, oppression, unemployment, bad governance, and other vices.

“Don’t be afraid because we have just started the fight,” he said, urging Nigerians not to allow their rights to be trampled upon.

Adebanjo also criticized the current state of the country, saying, “This is not the Nigeria we fought for. What would the Sage, Pa Obafemi Awolowo, Late Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Sardauna of Sokoto be saying about our present abysmal state in the country? This is not how we practised politics.”

He added that the election was a “daylight robbery” marred by violence and needless killings, and those who said they should stop pursuing the matter failed to understand that this was not his fight but that of the masses. “It is not my concern if Peter Obi of the Labour Party becomes the president. What would he offer me at this age? But, I am fighting for the masses,” he said.

Adebanjo further explained that Afenifere was not a member of the Labour Party, but the party stood for the ideals of Afenifere. He stated that he wanted liberation for Nigerians, and the APC could not claim to be fighting for the cause of the Yoruba more than Afenifere or himself.

He concluded by emphasizing that Afenifere would not relent or falter in its commitment to the enthronement of justice, fairness, and equity. He said,

“Even if it remains only five of us in Afenifere, we would continue the fight and struggle for a better and viable Nigeria as Baba Obafemi Awolowo taught us.”

Meanwhile, dignitaries at the birthday ceremony include former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former deputy governor of Ogun State, Senator Gbenga Kaka, Senator Femi Okunrounmu, and chieftains of Afenifere, among others.

Peter Obi: Peoples Gazette Suspends Reporter Responsible For Alleged Fake Audio.

A Nigerian online newspaper, the Peoples Gazette, which reported the alleged leaked audio conversation between Mr Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP and Bishop David Oyedepo of the Living Faith Church has suspended one of its reporters Ayoola Babalola for one month without pay for violating the newspaper’s social media policy.

Babalola, who sat on the political desk of Peoples Gazette, had previously worked for Sahara Reporters, another Nigerian online-based newspaper.

This was disclosed on Tuesday in a statement issued by the Peoples Gazette, announcing the suspension.

The statement contained in a memo signed by the Deputy Managing Editor, Boladale Adekoya was sent to all reporters.

Recall that the leaked audio conversation in contest alleged that Obi ahead of the presidential election solicited help from Oyedepo to talk to his people and in the conversation described the election as a “religious war.”

However, Obi, in a statement he personally signed on Wednesday, described the audio as fake.

He further raised an alarm that immense pressure was being mounted on him to leave the country.

The online media outfit said the decision by the management followed after carefully reviewing the reporter’s responses to online trolls.

Peoples Gazette said it concluded that he did not act with the decorum and professionalism expected of the organisation’s employees.

“Ayoola Babalola met with the HR, where he was directed to proceed on suspension for one month without pay,” the online newspaper stated in the memo.

“Mr Babalola is a vibrant and respected member of the organisation’s editorial team,” the statement noted but the reporter’s “conduct on social media, both from months past and as recently as last weekend, grossly violated the organisation’s guideline on personnel conduct.”

“Still, while the organization sympathises and stands strongly with Mr Babalola and all staff members who come frequently under social media onslaught, the manner with which colleagues handle online trolls is what distinguishes us as professionals,” it said.

Breaking: Thugs Invade Labour Party National Headquarters.

Thugs allegedly escorted by police officers on Thursday invaded the national headquarters of the Labour Party (LP).
The development was confirmed by the National Chairman of the party, Julius Abure in a statement released on Thursday.

The Secretariat of the LP is located in the Utako district near the federal capital territory office of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Abure in the statement accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of the attack.

He claimed that the thugs destroyed doors and windows, prompting workers to flee for safety.

Abure said, “A few minutes ago, the national headquarters of the Labour Party in Abuja witnessed a massive attack and was broken into by a detachment of the Nigerian Police and thugs believed to be working for the All Progressives Congress.

“The invaders who are armed reportedly pulled down the fences, burglaries, doors and windows to have access to our Secretariat and in the process sacked workers and party members who were at the Secretariat.

“Though, I was out of town but information has it that the agenda of the invaders was to inaugurate an illegitimate executive which has been chosen for them by their sponsors.

“Only yesterday, our presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi through the presidential campaign council alerted Nigerians of a plot to hound him out of the country over APC’s covert plot in collaboration with some security agents to frame him up allegedly on matters bothering on treason.”

He further stated that the only offence the LP has committed is challenging the declaration of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the just concluded presidential election.

Abure added, “We, therefore, call on President Muhammadu Buhari to call his party, the APC to order and also rein them in from using unorthodox means to suffocate political structures in Nigeria.

“A court of competent jurisdiction only yesterday ordered that I, Julius Abure remain the national chairman, and should not be restrained from performing my duties, it, therefore, baffles me why the Nigerian Police should allow itself to be used to perpetrate illegalities.”

The chairman said LP would no longer tolerate the intimidation and deployment of brute forces against it.

JUST IN: Court blocks Suspension of Labour Party Chairman, Julius Abure.

A State High Court sitting in Benin, the Edo state capital, has restrained the Labour Party and all its members from any suspension or purported suspension of its national officers till the determination of a motion on notice.

A statement made available to news men and signed by the National Secretary of the Labour Party, Alhaji Umar Farouk said the party’s lawyer, G. C. Igbokwe (SAN) confirmed to journalists that he has got a High Court order that status quo be maintained and no action which may result to the suspension of any national officer of the party be taken.

According to the Senior Advocate, “Our attention has been drawn to a latter order purportedly from another court of equal jurisdiction restraining my clients. Of course, such order is of no consequence and will have no effect untill after the determination of the motion on notice.”

Recall that the entire leadership of Labour Party in Edo state including the State, Local Government and Ward executives on Monday had passed a vote of confidence on Abure, who was allegedly suspended by a factional group of the party.

The party recalled that some groups who claimed to be ward three executives of the party in Edo State, led by the Ward’s Chairman, Martins Osigbemhe, had earlier announced the suspension of the LP national chairman.

However, in a solidarity visit to Barrister Abure at the National Secretariat of the party in Abuja, the chapters said the Osigbemhe faction are unknown to the party and are working for the opposition political parties.

Mr Kelly Ogbaloi, Chairman of the Edo State Chapter of the party, while addressing newsmen said that the constitution of the party did not empower any group or party members to suspend a national officer.

Ogbaloi said that since Abure was elected by a national convention, “imposters “who are not registered party members cannot suspend him, so their action is out of ignorance. Those who did it don’t even understand the message they were asked to deliver.”

No date has been fixed for hearing on the matter.

Politics / Audio Tape With Oyedepo Fake, Doctored, Says Peter Obi. by Gjrich(m): 12:17pm On Apr 06, 2023
Audio tape with Oyedepo fake, doctored, says Peter Obi.

Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the February 25 election, Peter Obi, yesterday said an audio which was circulated by a section of the media (not by The Nation) of him having a conversation with Pastor David Oyedepo of the Living Faith Church Worldwide was fake.

In a statement issued via his Twitter handle, Obi said he has instructed his lawyers to take action against those behind the fake audio.

He accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to divert attention from the outcome of the election, which he is challenging.

The statement reads: “The present attempts by the APC as a party, and the APC Led-government through some government officials and agencies to divert our attention from our blatantly stolen mandate is unfortunate and sad.

“These have come and continued to manifest in different ways, such as the malicious accusation of the Minister of Information, Mr Lai Mohammed, the circulation of a fake doctored audio call, and a pressure on me to leave the country.

“Let me reiterate that the audio call being circulated is fake, and at no time throughout the campaign and now did I ever say, think, or even imply that the 2023 election is, or was a religious war.

“The attempt to manipulate Nigerians is very sad and wicked. Our legal team has been instructed to take appropriate legal actions against Peoples Gazette and others.

“While we call on all concerned Nigerians and the International Community to implore the APC and the APC Led-government to stop their nasty attacks, my focus and commitment to lawfully and peacefully retrieve our mandate to secure and unite our nation, take Nigeria from consumption to production, pull millions of Nigerians out of multidimensional poverty, especially in the North, and jumpstart prosperity through agricultural, industrial, and technological revolution remain unchanged.”

“Elections are over, and we are in court to retrieve our stolen mandate. Let me reiterate that we are doing so through all lawful and peaceful options in line with our legal system and constitution, and I continue to implore all Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding.

“Those fixated on heating up the polity, creating divisions, tensions and hatred within and outside Nigeria should remember that Nigeria is our only country.

“Our focus should be on how to address the litany of challenges facing us, such as flawed electoral processes, the parlous state of our economy, unsustainable debt burden, lamentable unemployment and inflation, insecurity, and multi-dimensional poverty. A New Nigeria is indeed POssible, and God will help us. –PO”

Also yesterday, the LP Presidential Campaign Council spokesperson, Yunusa Tanko, said Obi was under “immense pressure” to leave the country or face arrest.

The full statement reads in part: “Most unfortunately, in the past few weeks, Mr Peter Obi has been contacted by associates, elder statesmen, family and friends with concerns for his personal safety.

“These concerns have increased intensely in the last few days as immense pressure has been mounted directly on Mr. Obi to leave the country, no doubt from sources allied to the APC and its agents in the security services…

“As part of the grand design, they are circulating a fake doctored audio call. At no time throughout the campaign and now did Mr Peter Obi ever say, think or even imply that the 2023 election is or was a religious war.

“Despite the public denunciation of the fake audio call, its contents have been translated to other Nigerian languages and circulated in most parts of Northern Nigeria with some of our Muslim clerics deceived and instigated to use the contents for their sermons at various Mosques during the usual Friday prayers.

“This is a dangerous development at a time when the APC led-government and the APC should be more concerned in addressing the ethnic and religious frictions unfortunately created by the outcome of the elections…

“There are many more campaigns of calumny against Mr Peter Obi planned for the near future both before and during the court process.

“However, we want to make it clear to the APC party, APC led-government and its agents that Mr Peter Obi a widely travelled man has no intention to leave the country at this time irrespective of the pressure on him and his family.

“He is determined as he had stated in his first and only press conference after the election to challenge the outcome of the election and the process has begun. It is his fundamental right!

“While we call on all concerned Nigerians and the international community to caution APC and the APC Led-government to stop their nasty attacks, Mr Obi’s focus and commitment to lawfully and peacefully retrieve our mandate to secure and unite our nation, take Nigeria from consumption to production, pull millions of Nigerians out of multidimensional poverty, especially in the North and jumpstart prosperity through agricultural, industrial and technological revolution remains unchanged

Politics / Why Politicians Are Angry About New Cashless Policy – Ex CBN Gov, Sanusi Lamido by Gjrich(m): 3:35pm On Feb 19, 2023
Why Politicians Are Angry About New Cashless Policy – Sanusi, Ex CBN Gov.

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Muhammad Sanusi Lamido has cautioned Nigerians not to be misled by politicians into opposing the implementation of the new cashless policy of the Federal Government.
Lamido, who is also the former Emir of Kano, said that the Politicians are angry because they are more negatively affected than ordinary Nigerians.
The former CBN Governor said that he was responding to numerous enquiries coming to him from people who wanted to know his opinion on the ongoing naira redesign and cashless policy.

According to him, it’s the Politicians that stockpiled the naira notes which they intend to to bribe electoral officials, security agents, the judiciary and others with physical cash just to get to power “and begin another rounds of stockpiling,” that are against the policy.
“Now, with cashless policy, there would not be enough physical cash for the Politicians to bribe, and any transfer of money to anybody can be monitored and traced. That is why they are very angry and agitative.”
Lamido said that cashless policy in the Nigeria’s economy is not a new thing.
“If you will remember, I started the cashless policy as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2012.”

According to him, the policy was test run in Lagos in 2012 when he was CBN Governor, stressing that it is long overdue, particularly as the country heads to general elections that will usher in new set of leaders, from President downward.
“We started with Lagos and later spread it to five other states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).”

He said that over ten years after the efforts of the CBN under his leadership, time is fully ripped for the country to fully launch into cashless nation like other fast developing economies.
He said that when he started the policy in 2012, there was no external outlet to dispense cash, but that now that Point Of Service (POS) centres are everywhere in the country, there is no excuse not to go fully into the cashless economy.
He acknowledged that citizens would experience discomforts and pains associated with such policy change but that with time, things will normalised.

Politics / Buhari Govt Lied To Us About Burning N500, N1,000 Notes – El-rufai. by Gjrich(m): 11:09am On Feb 16, 2023
KADUNA State Governor Nasir el-Rufai has revealed how the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government told some Nigerian governors a lie about the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) burning the old N500 and N1,000 notes.

The governor further revealed that he and other governors had information that the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company Limited would need at least 12 months to print the minimum amount of one trillion naira he said was needed to ensure a functioning economy in Nigeria.

In a statement signed Wednesday night by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Muyiwa Adekeye, the governor said the disclosures were necessary following what he called a misleading report by a national online newspaper (not the ICIR) about the meeting between the Buhari government and some governors over the currency swap stalemate.

El-Rufai said the Buhari’s officials suggested an out-of-court settlement of the litigation some governors, including himself, brought against the Federal Government at the Supreme Court over the naira redesign policy.

The governor and others had dragged the Buhari government to the Supreme Court to halt the policy which they said was bringing untold hardship to Nigerians.

He described the alleged burning of the old notes as fictitious, claiming he got information that the notes were still with commercial banks.

The governor clarified that there was no physical meeting between the governors and the Federal Government but telephone calls and chats.

“Circulating the old N200 notes alone would not be sufficient to relieve widespread human suffering in Kaduna State, and indeed in Nigeria today. They knew that, and that is why they falsely claimed that the CBN had already destroyed the old N500 and N1000 notes.

“This is contrary to the fact available to the governors to the effect that the old notes were in the custody of commercial bank branches throughout Nigeria until the evening of Monday, February 13, and not a single N500 or N1000 had been destroyed.”

He added, “The tabling of false facts, inadequate solutions to the sufferings of our people, and the bad faith that some of the FG negotiators displayed in our phone conversations and chats have now been taken further in leaking a false account and context to a respected medium.

“The plaintiff governors rejected the draft proposal as insincere and invested our hopes in the Supreme Court of Nigeria.”

The governor promised to address the people of his state on Thursday, February 16, over the “currency mess” and the consequences of the extension of the injunction of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and related matters.

Earlier on Wednesday, The ICIR reported Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu as saying the ruling All Progressives Congress’ rating had depleted nationwide because of the Naira redesign policy implementation, which he described as ill-timed.

Akeredolu was worried because of the coincidence of the policy implementation with the nation’s general elections, which kick off on February 25, 2023.

The ICIR reported how the Federal has continued with the implementation despite its suspension by the Supreme Court.

The ICIR reported how the Naira redesign policy has brought hardship to Nigerians.

Since the CBN introduced the new N200, N500 and N1,000 notes on December 15, they have been very scarce in banks and at Point of Sale centres.

On Tuesday, February 14, the CBN governor told the diplomatic community in Abuja that the apex bank is standing by its decision to stop using the old notes on February 10, despite the Supreme Court order against it.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court adjourned the case between the governors and Federal Government over the matter till February 22 on Wednesday, in Abuja.

Politics / Vote For APC Or Stay Away From Jakande–Baale Of Gbara In Eti-osa,Lagos Threaten by Gjrich(m): 7:32pm On Feb 11, 2023
LEAKED AUDIO: Vote For My Party, APC Or Stay Away From My Community – Lagos Monarch Threatens Residents.

The monarch was heard telling the residents that they must vote APC if they want to keep living and doing businesses in the community.

The Baale of Gbara in Jakande, Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State has threatened to deal with residents if they failed to vote the ruling All Progressives Congress, which he described as his party.

In a leaked audio, the monarch was heard telling the residents that they must vote APC if they wanted to keep living and doing businesses in the community.

“The people that will be friend with us are those with PVC, the people that will be doing business and making profit here will only be the people that have their PVCs and are willing to vote for our party, APC, nothing short of that,” the monarch said during a cabinet meeting held on Monday, January 30, 2023.

“If you have any other party in mind, as a Nigerian, I’m not holding you, just make sure you are far away from Igbara. Just give gap very well from Igbara. If you want to vote LP, you want to vote PDP, no be here.

“This one is a directive, as I’m talking to you, even my being a person is at stake. The status of my children is at stake. So I won’t allow you to jeopardiSe my future and that of my children.”

Although Nigeria runs a presidential system, it still retains monarchs of the various ethnic groups that make up the country.

The traditional rulers no longer exercise sovereignty but only ceremonial powers.

However, they remain a potent moral force with grassroots validity among their subjects.

Politics / Unbiased Analysis Of The Future Of Nigeria Under Obi, Atiku And Tinubu by Gjrich(m): 1:48pm On Feb 10, 2023
*Unbiased analysis of the future of Nigeria under the leadership of the trio, Obi, Tinubu and Atiku*

*_Atiku: Nigeria will experience heavy privatization, there will be a heavy flow of capital by foreign investors, and the economy will grow but slowly. His ministers and advisers will be brilliant but power-drunk minds. Food inflation will come down slightly. There will be new northern billionaires. The constitution will not be touched. He will use the EFCC and other antigraft agencies to hunt his enemies.

*Atiku's pitfall:* There will be massive corruption, only a particular set of people will be very rich but the general population will not suffer much. There will be heavy money laundering. If you are in the PDP, you will have an easy ride with impunity.

*Atiku's Security:* He will meet the bandits in the middle, Security threats will be heavily curbed but there will be pocket sizes of security issues here and there that will be handled by the Nigerian forces.

========================

*_Tinubu: His chief of staff will run the show, the good thing will be that his chief of staff will be a fine administrator like Fashola or Tunde Fowler, and there will be economic transformation using local products, especially in the Western region of Nigeria, law and order will be experienced in some regions though people will be stressed a bit it will be for the greater good if he runs only one term. There will be an enactment of developmental policies. Regions will be given the freedom to run their policing system. There will be economic competition amongst regions in Nigeria though the West will be leading in IGR. Nigeria will do more business with African nations than western nations. China will penetrate our economic system and there will be massive support from China. Though we will not become the peak of our potential, hard-working people will survive.

*Tinubu's Pitfall:* Many global organizations will not do business with Nigeria, his team will struggle to uphold viable policies, and corruption will increase but it will be very hidden. People will have to work extra hard to live well. His team will be one-sided but they will all be experts and brilliant guys. There will be a huge clash of interests within his team, and power toggle and Tinubu will be too weak to intervene. He will be hardly around to talk to the people. He will focus more on his health but his Chief of Staff will be very active and effective.

*Tinubu's Security:* Because he will play a regional game, the north will be antagonistic towards his leadership, and there will be heavy insecurity imbalance to the point that Lagos will be threatened but no major attack will come to Lagos. His vice president will not be able to fix anything in terms of security.

=========================

* Obi : His ministers will be world-class, highly educated and innovative, there will be a huge economic transformation in both the agricultural and manufacturing sectors within one year of his government, and many powerbrokers will either accept an economic amnesty or be exposed and disgraced. There will be educational transformation even in the rural areas, many people's eyes will be opened and government processes will be so transparent that the next government will not be able to steal easily (a lesson he learnt from the Obiano effect). There will be so many monies in the land because he will be frugal, he will drastically cut the cost of running the executive arm of government so that the legislative arm will have no choice but to follow same.

The government system will adopt blockchain technology.

There will be a massive call back of legislators because Obi will sponsor many great policies and constitutional amendments but some lawmakers will oppose the progressive policies then Obi will sponsor a huge communication campaign using all tools available to his government to expose the wickedness of these legislators.

Poverty will drastically be curbed in the first year. His acceptance rating will be high due to his formidable interactive leadership style. He will deploy his strength to visit all regions of Nigeria interacting with common people and empowering them thus bypassing many bureaucratic processes.

*_Obi's Security_*: He will empower the military, police and other forces, he will deregulate the police with an executive order and make all governors sign a responsibility agreement. Security threats will disappear in the first two years of his leadership.

*Obi's Pitfall:* Western communities like Europe will be threatened by Obi's change, developmental policies and roadmap towards a great Nigeria, they will use exogenous forces to want to thwart his government's efforts they will use foreign media but Obi will align himself with the enemy of the common enemy.

The Ibo will first misjudge his antecedents for manufacturing in Aba and Onitsha, they will want to dominate the polity but Obi will call them to order.

Politics / Buhari Sacked Michael Akabogu, (MD) Of (NSITF) For NYSC Certificate Scandal. by Gjrich(m): 4:46pm On Feb 08, 2023
Buhari Sacked Michael Akabogu, (MD) Of Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) For NYSC Certificate Scandal.

President Muhammadu Buhari has sacked Michael Akabogu, the Managing Director (MD) of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).

Although the reason for Akabogu’s sack was not made public, POLITICS NIGERIA learned that it was due to alleged National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate scandal.

“I am directed to inform you that Mr. President, Muhammadu Buhari in the exercise of his powers under Section 8 of the NSITF Act has directed the removal from office of Dr. Michael Akabogu as the Managing Director/CE of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) with effect from Friday, 3rd February 2023.

“Subsequently, the Executive Director Administration of the Fund – Barr. (Mrs.) Maureen Allagoa has been directed to take charge of the affairs of the Fund.

“Furthermore, this information should be communicated to the staff of your various Departments/Units, Regions and Branches,” an internal memo signed by the Executive Director of Operations of the agency, Gabriel Iwelunmor read.

Similarly, a source confirmed the development.

“He has been asked to step aside,” an official of the NSITF, who doesn’t want to be named, told the press.

The NYSC, in a letter of response to the police with reference number: NYSC/CCD/VER/10/S.1/VOL/07 had disowned Akabogu’s discharged certificate.

Politics / Chief Justice Of Nigeria Under Fire Over Supreme Court’s Order On Naira Notes. by Gjrich(m): 4:29pm On Feb 08, 2023
Chief Justice Of Nigeria Under Fire Over Supreme Court’s Order On Naira Notes.

The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) of Nigeria on Wednesday asked Olukayode Ariwoola, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), to vacate the order suspending the February 10 deadline for the swap of old naira notes with new ones given by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that speaking during a news conference in Abuja, the National Coordinator of the coalition, Obed Okwukwe, said that Supreme Court lacks the jurisdiction to hear the case.

“We say it categorically that the Supreme Court does not have the jurisdiction to entertain that matter that has been presented before it by some state Attorney General. We the CSOs are rejecting it.

“It is a plot to open bank vaults to enable vote buyers and holders of illicit wealth to have cash to buy votes.

“We urge the CJN to hurriedly vacate the Ex-parte order in the overall interest of the Nigerian election,” Okwukwe said.

Furthermore, Okwukwe argued that the CBN policy has the backing of the Federal Government.

The apex court had on Wednesday morning in a lawsuit brought before it by the governments of Zamfara, Kogi and Kaduna States issued an interim injunction against the CBN and Federal Government, allowing the old N200, N500 and N1000 to remain legal tender beyond February 10 deadline until the case is fully disposed.

Politics / “Keep Spending Old Naira” – El-Rufai Tells Kaduna Residents by Gjrich(m): 4:15pm On Feb 08, 2023
“Keep Spending Old Naira” – Elrufai tells Nigerians, defies Buhari/CBN policy.

The Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-rufai has called on Nigerians to keep spending the Old naira notes, a directive that is in defiance to the Federal Government’s Policy on the Currency Swap.

El-rufai, in a recent footage earlier this week, urged citizens to disregard the Central Bank’s directive and continue to transact with old denominations of the Naira notes. He said the policy will be reversed once APC presidential candidate Bola Tinubu becomes president.

In his words; “Everyone, especially people in Kaduna should not be disturbed because of the Naira swap deadline,” said the Kaduna governor in the Hausa language. “Continue running your businesses and daily activities with whatever notes (old or new) you have.”

“We will make sure to address this problem as soon as we win the election. That will be the first issue to tackle if we win the election.”

It can be recalled that the new currency swap policy has jointly been condemned by majorly Loyalists of the Party’s presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with some claiming it’s a ‘calculated’ attempt to scuttle his ability to win the elections.

The CBN has disclosed that the old denominations of the N200, N500 and N1000 notes would cease to be Nigerian legal tender from February 10th as part of a wider plan to strengthen the naira. However, the new notes have conspicuously remained scarce.

Politics / Obi Will Win On Large Voter Turnout –Stears Poll. by Gjrich(m): 6:36am On Feb 08, 2023
Obi Will Win On Large Voter Turnout –Stears Poll.

Stears Poll
Stears, a pan-African data company, has released the results of a new, predictive electoral poll suggesting a Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) victory by nine percentage points in a high-turnout scenario and a tighter Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) victory in a low-turnout election.

This was contained in a statement released by Stears after conducting a statistically significant, nationally representative poll to survey voter preferences and intentions ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Currently, the Stears poll is the largest public opinion electoral poll on the 2023 Elections with 6,220 Nigerians polled. The sample was randomly stratified by state and gender to mirror the distribution of registered voters in Nigeria.

Some highlights of the poll showed that Obi is the most universally accepted candidate and that Nigerians vote along religious lines.

One condition to win the Nigerian presidential elections is that the candidate must secure at least 25 per cent of the vote in at least two-thirds of the states. This condition is to ensure some level of universal popularity.

From the poll’s data set, Obi is the candidate that achieves at least 25 per cent of the vote in the most geopolitical zones (five of six) among voters that declared their candidate preference. He leads Tinubu (four out of five), while Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) only secures 25 per cent of the vote in two geopolitical zones.

The only region where Obi fails to secure 25 per cent of the vote is the North-West, where the presence of Rabiu Kwankwaso of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) means that votes are most evenly split in the region.

When asked “What are the most important factors that will mostly influence your decision to vote for a presidential candidate?” only four per cent of Nigerians admit that religion influences their decision to vote for a presidential candidate.

Religion is ranked the lowest among eight factors, lower than the choice of running mate. There is no difference between the proportion of Christians (three per cent) and Muslims (five per cent) that consider religion a factor. But the poll strongly suggests that Nigerians vote along religious lines.

All 36 states and the FCT were polled. The sample size and breakdown also enable Stears to provide statistically valid predictions at state-level, a unique feature of the 2023 electoral polls made available to the public.

After conducting Nigeria’s most robust public opinion polls for the 2023 cycle, Stears developed a proprietary estimation model that predicts likely voting patterns for silent voters within the data set, enabling comprehensive forecasts of the 2023 presidential elections.

Michael Famoroti, Head of Intelligence & Co-Founder at Stears, said: “Simple analysis of the poll results puts Obi in the lead with 27 per cent of all votes, ahead of Tinubu (15 per cent) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (12 per cent).

“This is aligned with the results of other polls; however, it is hard to draw definite conclusions without examining the large portion of respondents who do not provide a candidate preference—a proportion as high as 50 per cent in previously released polls.

“Where other polls have been inconclusive due to the large share of silent voters, Stears’ proprietary model is able to provide answers by predicting the most likely candidate for silent voters,” he explained.

CEO, Stears, Preston Ideh, in his comments, said: “We can analyse data sets from various sectors, but election data is particularly interesting because it is freely available. We started with Stears Elections, an open data project designed to organise all of Nigeria’s election data. In 2019, we built Nigeria’s first real-time election database, and now in 2023, Stears Elections is the most granular way to track all live election results for the Presidential, Gubernatorial, National Assembly, and State Houses of Assembly elections. Ahead of a pivotal moment for the country, there is no better time to apply our analytics expertise to our proprietary election polling data.”

A predictive model is necessary to make sense of electoral polling data because a substantial portion of voters surveyed in 2023 electoral polls declined to reveal their preferred presidential candidate. A December 2022 ANAP poll showed that 52 per cent of voters were undecided or chose not to reveal (Figure 1.2). In the Stears’ poll, 37 per cent of voters did not reveal their preferred candidate.

There are many plausible reasons why certain Nigerian voters would be unwilling to reveal their candidates. Data from Stears’ polls showed that silent voters are unevenly spread across demographics, pointing to the need for more nuanced analysis. For example, voters in the South East are most willing to reveal their preferred candidate, while women, in general, are more reluctant to declare their preference.

Stears’ predictive model analyses the stated preferences of the transparent voters and the revealed preferences of silent voters to estimate the most likely preferred candidate for each silent voter.

Even though the model assigns 43 per cent of undeclared votes to Tinubu, suggesting most silent voters are Tinubu supporters, Obi is still the predicted winner when the reassigned silent voters are added to the declared voter count.

People Are Whispering Into Tinubu’s Ears To Tell Him What To Say – Naja’atu Mohammed

A former Director of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign (PCC) Council, Naja’atu Mohammed has once again reiterated that the presidential candidate of the APC, Bola Tinubu is not physically and mentally fit to lead the country.
According to Naja’atu, Tinubu goofs at every campaign.

The former director who resigned from her position in the APC’s PCC said this during an interview on the Arise TV Morning show.

She went on to allege that people have to whisper into the APC’s flag bearer ears to give him a cue on what to say.

Naja’atu said, “One of the things that I said about Asiwaju is about corruption and perjury. It was Festus Keyamo in 1999 that sued the Lagos State Government attempt for clearing Asiwaju of perjury. He went as far as the Supreme Court.

“We are talking of integrity; people changing. He wants Nigeria to forget everything he said about Asiwaju then.

“The clips for Asiwaju are there for everyone to see. Every campaign he goes to, he goofs. In fact, people are whispering into his ear to tell him what to say,”

Recall that the former APC chieftain had dumped the party a few weeks ago, stating that she could no longer support Tinubu.
