Russia Signs Agreement With Nigeria to Build Nuclear Power Plant

Russia has signed agreements with Nigeria to build and operate a nuclear power plant in the oil-rich West African nation that has a deficit of reliable power and faces security challenges by Islamist militants in the far northeast.

Feasibility studies for the plant and a research center construction will include site screening, capacity, financing, and time frames of the projects, state-owned Russian nuclear company Rosatom said in an emailed statement.

The nations in 2009 signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the field of the peaceful usage of nuclear technologies. Nigeria in 2015 was in talks with Rosatom to build as many as four nuclear power plants costing about $20 billion, the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission said at the time.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, distributes an average of 4,500 megawatts of electricity. Half the output of the Egbin power plant, the nation’s biggest, is lost because of inadequate transmission infrastructure, its chief officer said last month.

Rosatom is seeking to build nuclear power plants in other countries on the continent including South Africa.

A young man was beaten mercilessly by a mob after he was spotted wearing a cloth allegedly stolen from a boutique at Ikot Ekpene road in Umuahia, Abia State today. According to reports, the suspect was seen by the owner of the boutique - wearing one of the clothes allegedly looted from the store.

When quizzed by his captors, the young man said he didn't steal the cloth and that it was given to him by one of his friends.

He was tied up and beaten by the residents before he was handed over to security operatives - not after the said cloth was stripped off him.

The Festus Keyamo Chamber has raised the alarm over imminent release of edited video on Nollywood actress, Tonto Dikeh by her estrange husband, Olakunle Churchill portraying her as being involved in domestic violence against him.

A statement from the chamber issued by Okechukwu Uju-azorji, warned bloggers and journalists not to use any edited video on Tonto Dikeh or faced being sued.

“It has come to our knowledge that her ex-husband, Mr. Olakunle Churchill has perfected plans to release a short and edited video depicting and portraying our client as being involved in some domestic violence against him.

“Our client wants all bloggers and/or journalists to request for the full version of the video showing the said domestic scene which started with a physical abuse of our client by her ex-husband, which earned her a swollen face. Her ex-husband only intends to release our client’s reaction to the assault on her and not the assault itself.

“We shall be prepared to take legal action against any blogger/journalist that uses the edited version without insisting on or showing the full version,” the statement said.
