The same John wrote in 1 John 1: 2 "Yes, the one who is life was to us. We saw him, and so we can tell others about him. We now tell you about him. He is the eternal life that was with God the Father and was shown to us."

John actually said here that Jesus is The very ETERNAL LIFE

So, you can see how 1 John 5:20 agreed with 1 John 1:2.

Jesus is God because he has the fullness of God. Hence the argument becomes segregation based on capacity and identity.

Hence based on capacity he is God but based on identity he is not. From the identity point of view we can identify him as a son of God and from the capacity pov as God. Hence it's a two sided coin you can't take one and leave the other you take it all.
