ffk is seriously pained cos he can no longer accuse APC as an islamic party or behind boko haram which has always been the basis of his attacks on PMB and the APC.

But seriously all those pdp supporters who saw APC as an islamic party has been taken as fools with the new pdp sheriff. This is why politics must not be based on religion or ethnicity, I just hope we would learn and move on. God bless Nigeria.

people like you are the reason Nigeria may never move forward! These days in Nigeria is a heroic act to say the truth, self deception and jingo patriotism has blinded you E-rats.
All of a sudden, seniority is now the criteria for appointment in this government, simply because an Igbo man was made to take over. A cursory look at his appointments shows that he has since broken the rules of seniority in his appointments. There are many instances where he brought in juniors to take over, simply because they are from the 'chosen part of the country'.
In the words of Chinua Achebe 'there is nothing that unifies Nigerians of other tribe, than there common resentment for ndigbo'......yet these zombies will never allow them to go their own way.
Abeg spare me jor, what's your headache sef if it was the Igbo guy that was truly the senior and it was given to another, won't you shout? Must you always complain when things don't go your way even when its justified.

You guys are becoming a joke, all the DGs of all parastatals were sacked only onyeka owenu went to town to say she was sacked because she is Igbo.

Ezeife is not making sense here, the NIMASA appointment was made in error not taking into account the issue of seniority so what's the fuss about that? are igbos not in PMB's government? Its good he has advised his people not to resort to self defence cos that's the onle sensible thing he has said. Someone like Ezeife should be a bridge an not a factor for more division,

OmoOsanyin:
ON ELECTRICITY TARIFF INCREASE...

(A CALL FOR EMANCIPATION & FREEDOM).

Suggestions:

1. Lifestyle changes for the common man, do all you have to do before dusk, then prepare and go to bed after dark. Early to bed, early to rise, makes one strong healthy and wise. Thus undue power cut or blackout threats will be innefective. Afterall, artificial (nepa, phcn, discos, gencos, generators etc) light after dark is actually an adopted learned lifestlye that we became depended upon. If God wanted it otherwise, there will be no dusk, which i believe has its purpose, just like dawn. If we can all sacrifice and do this, the demand for power will fall tremendously. Thus electricity power extortion will be fade off. Boycott their cut-throat un-services. With time, with little or no demand for light after dark from them, these companies will either collapse or offer free deals to attract usage of their negleted supply. We must learn to unlearn that which enslaves us.

Possible societal effects:
a). It will make us seriously seek and create better alternatives, eg solar at a very cheap and affordable rate.
B) we will literarily learn to make hay while the sun shines.
C) longer night rest and increased efficiency next day.
D) back to the 'dark ages'? We already live as such for decades anyway at a high price.
E). Outsource power supply to foreign companies. Theirs do work without exploiting and making their people pay for un-used services...yet they are no magicians.
F). Dissolve privatisation of electricity services . Let the Feds handle it. Nigeria's glory days of power supply goes far back as when the British were here and when we had E.C.N. (Electrical Corporation of Nigeria). Most of you around today may not know about ECN.
G) let businesses, corporations etc , if they must use power and or generators.
H) if the masses can all shun these inefficient, extorting, power supply companies and their lukewarm services, the Feds will wake up and provide a solution.
I) a nationwide call to action & change street demonstration boycotting use of this failed privatisation...he who pays the piper, ought to dictate the tune, not the other way round. Nepa, phcn, discos, gencos, generators etc need the people to exist and function, the people dont actually need them to exist and function.
If these electricty provision bodies are incapable of providing adequate services without first milking the populace to finance their cost, then they should quit and throw in the towel.

It is illegal, criminal and corrupt to charge the people any fixed amount and in this regard N750 monthly fixed charges, whether you provide service or not, or whether the mediocre service is consumed or not; as though that isn't appaling enough, they have the effrontery of tariff increase. I spit on you and such audacity and reject you! The Senate, President Muhammadu Buhari with the sword of anti-corruption, should not allow this to be, lest they appear un-serious.
Hitherto, these private companies should not open shop for business, if they within can't cover operational cost.

WHY THE PRIVATISATION ANYWAY? IT IS AN APPARENT FRAUD & FAILURE AND SHOULD BE SCRAPPED WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT!!!

It is a scam, unethical and immoral to not provide billing meters, moreso when it is deliberate, with meters lying fallow in offices and turn around extorting monies from the masses using over-inflated estimated billing methods. How exactly are these estimates arrived at? What are the actual indices used?

The people must arise, awake and dissolve this extortive callous matrimony of the apron string dependence of all service providers, including ineffectual, slowpoke governments.

While a good efficient political 'change' will always be embraced, I believe the actual 'change' Nigeria needs isn't political or external, but inwards, in the individual. A 'change' of self-sufficiency, self-contentment, self acceptance and self-dependence.

Let us shed all the negatives, let them all go. We will be better and happier humans.

These scavengers have this audacity really because Nigerians are apologetically way too meek, scared, yellow-bellied, yellow-livered and dis-united; still enslaved under the whims and caprices of the canopy of divide-and-rule.
Imagine how your politicians, soldiers, public servants STEAL with gross impunity and you go to sleep and wake up and go about daily... business as usual. Arrests here, probe there, money recovered here or there, from whohuh no convictions, no one jailed to date. No...No...No!!!

NIGERIANS, ENOUGH OF THE BULL!!!!!!
WE MUST GET UP, STAND UP AND FIGHT FOR OUR RIGHTS AND NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP!!!

Your civil rights (...'left') activists are couch potatoes and your shameless BLONDE WIG wearing, thieving, conniving judiciary have their heads buried between their cracks. So we must emancipate and liberate ourselves from this physical, emotional, mental and spiritual slavery NOW!

The best things in life (Nature) are actually free!

The position of the Senate is politicizing a Market issue.
---
The FG does not have much leverage anymore in the power sector after selling off its assets in Generation and Distribution. In the case of fuel imports, the FG has some leverage since NNPC can import over 70% of local needs and they also own local refineries that can augment supply.
---
Unfortunately, the problem is not the DISCOs or government. They are only a reflection of the prevailing mindset of society. As a people, most of us are inherently fraudulent, deceitful, and cheats. When we eventually become public officials, we simply exhibit who we are
.
@the bolded, I agree with you 100% as this was the basis of the so called privatization of the power sector, it was fraudulent, deceitful and full of cheats in the name of discos. The present FG has to clean that mess to save the power sector simple.

TBH, I don't have any idea what should be the ideal price. My point is that if the price is not right, we will continue to be in a situation where there is no power supply. The sad reality is that these companies cannot continue being operational if their revenue can't cover their cost.
---
Politicizing pricing of private services is not the way to go. We created a regulatory agency (NERC) to represent us. They have said that the way forward is a review of prices. Unfortunately, we all want good things but are not ready to pay the price to achieve it.
---
I wish we could pay lower prices for power, but that is not just going to happen. If only previous governments used oil windfall to invest heavily in the sector, then we wouldn't be here today. We are our greatest enemies but we always want to blame others.
There is no politics here bruv, the privatization process is flawed and the way to go is a more comprehensive privatization process that will bring more serious players than this skelewu dancers we presently have. They are the problem, do you know that we would have been at the mercy of fuel marketers and be buying petrol at a very high rate now if not for the timely intervention of PMB and his tactical removal of subsidy? That is what we need right now in the power sector, we need to be free from the whims and caprices of the unserious dicscos

The truth is, whenever you privatise, prices go up, and the prices will remain up until the private investors settle in properly and start recording profits before any price reductions can take place.

The MTN example you gave is a very viable example to also buttress my point, when MTN came into Nigeria, they sold sim cards for over N30k and customers had to pay N50/min (no per second billing) for some of the poorest telecoms services in the world then (hopefully you haven't forgotten that in a hurry). The story has changed today because of favourable competition. In the power sector, Nigerians will never be able to enjoy uninterrupted (or reasonably stable) power supply if the power sector remains in the hands of the government. And the only way the privatisation of the power sector can work is an upward review of tariffs.

In my opinion, I have no problems with an increased tariff especially as fixed charges have now been removed. It would force the power companies to ensure they provide power and it will also force Nigerians to learn to conserve power. The only problem I have with the whole process is the unavailability of prepaid meters.
you use pre-paid meter I suppose, what about those who are still being charged based on the estimated billing system, now that is where the problem lie, no pre-paid meters, no justification for increase simple.

Criminalising estimated billing doesn't provide meters but it stops the discos from billing customers/ disconnecting them if they don't have a meter. This means if the discos want their money, they need to provide meters.

It makes no sense reversing the privatisation exercise. The country as a whole should be moving forward.
The senate is not a regulating agency please, the discos are already opposing the recommendation of the senate to increase tariff and you think they will automatically provide pre-paid meters just because of the senate criminalising estimated billing. You have forgotten how lawless we are in this country, there is even a court order restraining the tariff increase which is about to be disobeyed. My brother leave grammar for Hon Patrick, those fellows are not ready to provide any pre-paid meters, if they were, they would have done that long ago.

The privatization process is flawed and can't stand the test of time.

The senate and house of rep members from that zone should awake from their slumber to address the issues, that is what they were elected to do and not sleep during plenary.

If a kano house of rep member is already putting pressure for the lift of suspension of emirates flight to kano and the north east lawmakers can sponsor a bill to establish a commission to rebuild the north east from the destruction by boko haram, then my brothers from the south south have themselves to blame.

The maritime university in bayelsa was abolished and national assembly members from that region kept quiet, it only shows they got no swag.

so for calabar and onne seaports, ss lawmakers should do the needful.

You are very correct Goke. Econet and MTN paid almost US$300M each in licensing fees and still spent additionally over a billion dollars to build infrastructure from scratch to the level we are today. They were serious business entities which were already in existence and operations before bidding for the Nigerian licences. They also brought in a functional billing mechanism which put them and not the consumer in charge of bills collection.

The entities GEJ's government sold our power structure to were only briefcase companies with only owners and letterhead papers!! Most of them borrowed funds to pay for the licenses and had no financial nor technical knowhow to improve the structure they were taking over!!!

For those of you who live in Lagos, have you ever seen any IKEDC or EKEDC project around your neighbourhood? Groundbreaking, base cell installation, new 33KVA projects, step down transformers, smart meters that can b remotely tripped off etchuh

This is not privatisation, no, this is crony capitalism and crass rent collection.
don't mind them, nothing is going on and they want us to swallow their grammar, if they want to raise tariffs, they should provide everyone if not most Nigerians pre-paid meters first afterall, they are doing in some areas, why can't they be patient to achieve that first before raising tariffs.

Around the time the GSM companies were rolling out....we were paying N25000 for a sim card. Back then, as a common university student, I could not afford a sim card, talkless of phones.

Once the phone/GSM companies had recouped the money they spent on infrastructure....the price came down.(Took five years...but by 2006...sims cost N400).

You cannot expect constant power supply without paying for it. You have goof GSM facilites....because millions of Nigerians were willing to pay high prices ten years ago.(And back them people complained well well).

Honestly I love what is happening now as all the accusations and allegations of which party is islamic or a christian party has finally been put to rest.

It also shows how our elites keep brainwashing Nigerians that this person or this political group is anti south or anti north. The emergence of the new pdp sheriff should make all Nigerians to be sober and see that the elites are our problems and that we have been fighting the wrong battles by attacking our tribes, religion or political party. I see the pdp folks trying hard to defend their new chairman but they don't have to at all.

But next time please allow an Ngige to become a senator so he can be senate President instead of castigating him because he is in a supposed Islamic or Hausa party, don't see an Okorocha as an hausa man because he is in APC and next time when an Ekwunife calls APC an Islamic party because she needs your votes, tell her that no Islamic party exist anywhere in Nigeria. An Amaechi too should not be seen as a betrayal because he is in a supposed hausa party.

These are some of the lessons we should learn at this time. God bless Nigeria including all the political parties.

Very informed post. Unfortunately, sentiment will likely prevail over reason as it usually does in our clime. Most people commenting on this topic have no idea how long it took Azura to conclude its development phase of its GFPP. The politicisation of the tariff increase by the Senate sends a very bad signal to investors.

Azura is the first project-financed IPP to close financially in Nigeria. The project took far too many years to conclude due to the difficulty of developing bankable financed projects in Nigeria. Truth is there are very few of such projects being developed that will close out financially in the next 3 years with the current climate. Uncertainty in the Tariff regime will kill investor confidence.

It costs approximately $1.8mn/MW to develop a gas power plant and $2.73mn/MW to develop a coal power plant. When you consider that the developer will fund the construction of the gas pipeline and transmission lines (to closest substations), the above cost increases considerably.

Simply put, it costs MONEY to develop power projects. Without a bankable tariff, there will NEVER be any real growth in the power sector.

There's a lot truth people just don't want to hear and this is just a taste of it.
provide the service and people will pay, we don't need all these grammar abeg, people are ready to pay for the service they will consume, that is the point Nigerians are making.

Stop comparing power and telcoms, that's like comparing apples to chickens.

Power is a capital intensive business and the truth of the matter is if the country wants to make progress, we need the increase in tariff. What the senate should have done/ do is make it a criminal offence to give consumers estimated billing.
That way, you either provide the meters of give out free electricity.
Am not actually against the increase bruv but truth be told, you can't ask people to pay for a service not rendered, that has been the issue and why did they stop giving out pre-paid meters for a very long time, I use a pre-paid meter and so the tariff increase does not bother me at all as I don't even have light in my area but my meter will not read one kobo, the removal of service charge sef is a a bonus to me as I may not need to recharge for a whole year sef but same cannot be said for those on the estimating billing system as they must cough out money whether there is light or not.

The truth is most of the gsm companies are owned by foreigners apart from glo who mean business, so they are working but the discos were shared and bought by the same Nigerian greedy politicians who don't mean well for Nigerians but just want to be collecting and spending our money as usual. This is why the present FG must reverse the privatization scam and open it up to even foreigners who will be ready to do business and build infrastructure.

Truth be told Nigerians can be bad managers otherwise how do you explain how visaphone being bought over by mtn and how come dstv continues to enjoy monoploy. open up the power sector to both local and international investors and see whether we will not have light 24hrs a day. We are our own problems.

The problem is they want to make more profit. I pay around N20, 000per month for a 2 bedroom apartment with at least 5-6 hours power in 2days (estimated bill). Now please add 45%to that and tell me how visible that is.

If they cannot operate they should hands off. The Government should open the market for free entry and see how things will change.
