It is only in the last 60 years, mostly thanks to Western influcence (and the West was moving away from pedo'phla in the early 20th century...otherwise they were as bad as us)...that we are moving away from it.

As for homosexuality....most African tribes never encouraged it. Anyway, pre-colonial times were hard. The only way to make a living was by farming, and the only way to get farmworkers was to marry and have children. Not everyone could afford slaves. Also, high mortality rates among kids meant that you had to have many to keep populations above replacement level.

HIV probably spread during colonial rule as African society opened up. People started moving around due to modern means of transport...and that facilitated the spread of the virus.

People have probably been dying from HIV for centuries. It's probably in the last 50 years we have figured it out. Just as people died from Lassa fever for centuries, until someone sent a sample to the CDC in the late 1960's for testing, and thus the virus was discovered. Before then people who died from the thing were listed as having died from Malaria or from the non existent 'African fever'.

One thing that spread HIV easily in Africa is the fact that one African may have several relationships...ie his wife, side chick, another side chick, and the side chicks would be having relationships with other men. Introduce HIV into the mix..and wahala starts.
