WAEC SUPERVISOR ASSAULTS FEMALE MUSLIM CANDIDATE

A female Muslim candidate writing the current examination of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Khadijat Eniola Anisere was assaulted by a female supervisor of WAEC at Egan Grammar School, Igando, Lagos State. The incident occurred while candidates were taking biology on Friday, 2nd September, 2016 between 9.30 am and 12 noon.

The WAEC supervisor who was shuttling from one center to the other arrived the center and entered the examination hall where the Muslim girl was seated among many other candidates, clad in hijab. She approached the hijabite and ordered her to remove her hijab. Khadijah pleaded that hijab was her mode of dressing as a Muslim. She further pleaded that she would feel totally naked if she removed the head cover.

Obviously enraged and determined to enforce her illegal command, the WAEC supervisor yanked off the hijab from the poor girl’s head. Khadijah, whose examination was already interrupted, burst into tears. She cried throughout the rest of the examination period and was unable to continue taking the examination. The incident was reported by members of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) at the human rights desk in Igando Police Station by 10 am on Saturday, 3rd September 2016.

MURIC strongly condemns this wanton assault on an innocent female Muslim teenager. It is most bizarre, highly barbaric and totally deplorable.

This is a hate attack and a blatant act of Islamophobia. We see it as part of a grand design to retard the progress of Muslim youths. Christian fanatics working in government agencies like WAEC have been instructed by hate preachers to create bottlenecks for Muslim youths by all possible means.

Section 38 (i) & (ii) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria not only grants freedom of religion but also stipulates its practice and manifestation. Hijab is therefore a legally recognized head cover for female Muslims. The supervisor’s order for the removal of the hijab was unlawful, unconstitutional and therefore ultra vires. The forceful removal of the candidate’s hijab constitutes assault in legal parlance.

The supervisor’s attack on Khadijah Anisere is a breach of Section 13 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act (1991) which provides ‘’a public officer shall not do or direct to be done, in abuse of his office, any act prejudicial to the rights of any person knowing that such act is unlawful or contrary to any government policy’’

For whereas the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Article 4, Clause 1 & 2 affirm that “Human beings are inviolable. Every human being shall be entitled to respect for his life and the integrity of his person”, the WAEC supervisor chose to derobe the innocent Muslim girl in public.

MURIC demands justice for Khadijah Anisere. Nigerian Muslims will not fold their arms and watch their daughters dehumanised by Christian fanatics. WAEC must identify this extremist supervisor and discipline her. People like her are responsible for series of religious crises that have resulted in loss of lives and destruction of properties worth billions of naira. What Nigeria needs most today is peace and stability and our public institutions cannot afford to create unnecessary tension at this point in time. We assert that justice is the soul of peace and whoever denies one can never enjoy the other.

We therefore demand a public statement from WAEC on the supervisor’s identity and the official reprimand failing which WAEC should blame itself for the reaction of Muslims. Nigerian Muslims also want to know what palliative WAEC has in store for the innocent girl who was rudely disturbed during the biology examination. Will she fail biology?

We also appeal to the Federal Ministry of Education to restrain examination bodies from imposing anti-Muslim rules on registration guidelines.

Here lies the real anatomy of terrorism and religious violence. Fanatical officials use their positions to victimize Muslims everyday in Nigeria. The natural corollary can only be likened to smoke from fire.

Nonetheless, we appeal to Muslims throughout the country to remain calm and law abiding as WAEC and the Ministry of Education take steps to address the matter. We advocate dialogue in place of spontaneous or premeditated violence. Muslim youths are warned not to take the law into their hands.

Let me start by mentioning this was only written as a general reminder to everyone especially parents about the importance of increasing ones' knowledge of Islam as well as the importance of raising children in an Islamic manner. It was not a personal attack on anyone. I made sure to read it before posting and made sure to generalize by using "we" statements.

Without doubt parents have a high status in Islam as well as huge rights over their children.You raised some very important points especially with regards to behavior and character. The prophet ( Peace and blessing be upon him) mentioned that the best from amongst the people are those who are best in character. We have also been commanded by Allah to worship him and obey our parents. We are meant to speak with them with humbleness, humility, and avoid raising our voices on them even when we disagree with matters of the deen. In surah Maryaam Allah gives us an example of a beautiful discussion between prophet Ibrahim (peace and blessing be upon him) and his father. We learn from those verses some etiquette of conversing with parents even when they encourage disobedience to Allah.

That being said, it is not permissible for parents to prevent children from worshiping Allah especially in areas where the acts of worship are obligatory. Growing the beard and wearing the hijab are both obligatory just as performing the salat and giving zakah. It is completely unfair for ANYONE to prevent another person from engaging in an act of worship. Parents have no rights to prevent their children from worshiping Allah and children have the right to disobey them if they do that. Yes, children have the right to disobey whilst being gentle, reminding and informing them of the rulings. Some parents don't have knowledge which is why I felt the need to write this and stress on the importance of increasing ones's knowledge. Some parents know and simply don't care! Whilst some don't simply don't want to listen to their children because they feel they know best. This point was actually raised previously and I asked what are ways children can inform or educate parents. I bring that same question to you.

It is also not right for parents to prevent their children from worshiping Allah because they have a fault in their character. No body is perfect! Everyone starts somewhere. People do not and will not change overnight. If one has faults in his/her character, how is preventing the person from worshiping Allah going to improve that? Rather, I think allowing them to learn and practice the deen will help improve their character because it allows them to get closer to Allah and then perhaps they will learn the etiquette of dealing with people.

Lastly, I think you might have misread the verse of I quoted. The verse simply stated that believers should protect themselves and their families from the fire. I nowhere quoted any verse that talked about punishing parents.

The incident reminded me of the hadiths and advice given by the prophet (may peace and blessing be upon him). I was reminded about the importance of choosing the right spouse, the importance of family, and the importance seeking Islamic knowledge.

As narated by Muslim (145) from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Islam began as something strange and will revert to being strange as it began, so give glad tidings to the strangers.”

Al-Sindi said in Hashiyat Ibn Majah:

“Strange” refers to the small number of its adherents. The basic meaning of ghareeb (a stranger) is being far from one's homeland. “And will revert to being strange” refers to the small number of those who will adhere to its teachings even though its followers are many. “So give glad tidings to the strangers” means those who follow its commands. “Tooba (glad tidings)” has been interpreted as meaning Paradise or a great tree in Paradise. This shows that supporting Islam and following its commands may require leaving one's homeland and being patient in bearing the difficulties of being a stranger, as was the case in the beginning.


This struck me because this something I witness almost daily as a Muslim. However, what struck me even more was that the youths have become strangers in their homes.

What do I mean?

There is nothing more heartbreaking than when I see youths trying to practice Islam and their parents stand as obstacles on their path. I have seen with my very eyes parents who are meant to be guardians, literally prevent their children from doing good, and in some cases encourage evil. For instance, some parents object to their sons keeping their beards, and their daughters wearing the hijab. How can a father prevent his son from growing his beard? How can parents prevent their daughters from wearing the hijab or niqab? How can parents encourage free mixing in the name of socializing and civilization?

Why have we become so materialistic? Why have we forgotten the true purpose of life, which is to worship Allah? Why have we suddenly forgotten about the hereafter?

There are ABSOLUTELY no justifications for parents or anyone else to advice their children to give up a religious commitment for material things
Allaah says to the believers (interpretation of the meaning):

“O you who believe! Ward off yourselves and your families against a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones, over which are (appointed) angels stern (and) severe…”[al-Tahreem 66:6]

i.e., enjoin them to do good and forbid them to do evil, and do not neglect them lest they be consumed by the Fire on the Day of Resurrection. Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 5/240

We should all try to raise children in a manner that is pleasing to Allah and in manner that would benefit us after our deaths.
It was reported that the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said "When a human being dies, all of his deeds are terminated except for three types: an ongoing sadaqah, a knowledge (of Islam) from which others benefit, and a righteous child who makhes du'a for him.

I would encourage everyone to be from those who encourage good and forbid evil, those who seek correct Islamic knowledge and those who raise children who will carry the banners of Islam.

have you made your parent realise the benefits of leaving beards or wearing the hijab?..have you xplained to them with humility and wisdom..if not what use is your knowledge if you have no wisdom to xplain it..fyi leave your beards or not..if you misbehave to your parents xpecially your mum either justly or not..the posibility you would gain the wrath of Allah is high.

Obasanjo had nothing to do with it!, people confuse the Abuja light rail project(intra city)whose ground breaking was performed by Obasanjo with the Abuja-Kaduna rail project .

It is imperative to note that apart of the grass clearing (tagged official ground breaking in 2007) for the intracity project Obasanjo never did anything to actualise the dream. the intracity project was originally linked to the Abuja's bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014 which never happened!

Sorry to say... it looks original but if i earn atleast 500k with a single drag of fish net and over N3m on a bust day... how would i be able to keep such amout running into millions at home and not the bank?

If i manage to survive, why would i ever be poor or accept to stay in a camp, if i had the hustle sprit to survive and have made atleast N10m on my own before, is lake chad the only river she knows?

the woman is lazy..you are in the comfort of your house and you call a victim of terrorism that has seen death and lost dear one's to it lazy. do you know baga to maiduguri is as large as the entire bayelsa state? If we were to give an exhaustive account of the benefits of the recitation of “Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim” we would need more than a single volume to do justice to it. Apart from being part of every chapter in the Noble Qur’an (except the chapter of repentance – surah at-tawba), it is also the most often repeated verse in the Holy Qur’an.

It is narrated in Tafseere Burhaan that the Holy Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) has said that when a person recites “Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim” then five thousand ruby palaces are built for him in Jannah. Each palace has a thousand chambers made of pearls and in each chamber has seventy thousand thrones of emerald and each throne has seventy thousand carpets made from special fabrics and upon each carpet is seated a Hur-ul-Ein. A person asked for the condition necessary to get this great reward and the Holy Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) replied that the person should recite the “Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim” with conviction and understanding.

The Holy Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) has also said that when a believer will have to cross the Pul-e-Siraat on the Day of Judgement, and he will say “Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim” then the flames beneath him will start dying down until Jahannam will cry out, ‘O believer, pass through quickly, your presence is causing my fire to die out!’

When a teacher teaches a child to recite “Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim” the child, his parents and the teacher are all guaranteed freedom from hellfire. It is narrated that Prophet Isa (alayhis salam) was once passing by a graveyard and he saw a grave upon which the Wrath and Punishment of Allah (subhana wa-ta-‘alaa) was descending, so he quietly walked past. When he passed the same place after some time, he noticed that the Mercy and Blessings of Allah (subhana wa-ta-‘alaa) was being showered on the same grave. He was surprised at this and asked Allah (subhana wa-ta-‘alaa) about what has happened and it was revealed to him that the man inside the grave was a sinner and was thus being punished for his sins. When he died, his wife was pregnant and soon gave birth to a son. When the boy grew older, his mother took him to a teacher who taught him to recite “Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim” and I felt that it would not be justice that this man’s son was calling My Name and I was punishing his father in the grave.

It is also mentioned that recitation of “Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim” with a loud voice is from the signs of a true believer.

May Allah make us all be among those who truly love Him. May He give us sincerity in both words and deeds Insha Allah Ameen.
