In the early 90’s there were some memorable moments in Primary school that can’t be just be forgotten. The frequent recalling of them may be minute but when an occurrence that is similar comes up, you’ll remember every bit of them. They are so refreshing that you’ll feel it’s current. Well let’ s take a flash back to the awesome days of the 90’s and dig up some occasions that were funny but brought us this far today. 1. The Compulsory Recitation of “Edet Goes to School” : This is a popular comprehension passage of the Macmillan English textbook for primary 3. I can still remember being caned at home severally for not cramming this passage off heart. After series of punishments, it stuck to my memory till today. This also goes for most people as of today. They can recite this passage without any book for reference. The memory of those days makes me feel like having a taste of it once again. I guess you are recalling yours right now. Hahahaha! 2. Coming Out To The Black Board To Solve a Question You Don’t Understand: I was a frequent victim of this moment. It’s just funny now but back then, it felt like being in hell. One of our teachers “Aunty Vero” wouldn’t just let me be as she’ll always call me out to come solve a math question on the blackboard. Each time am called out, I would stand and be looking straight at the question on the board with a chalk in my hand. Another person will be called out too until we are like about five(5)of us standing like some soldiers on a parade at the board. Each person trying to copy from each other. But most times I usually end up serving serious punishments because I fail such questions. Those days were like frustrating and funny but today it made many us great and good students and productive graduates. 3. Use Of Sands To Mold Houses in Rainy Seasons: Whenever rain falls back then, it is a moment of contest of who builds the biggest and beautiful sandy house that won’t collapse as you remove your hands from beneath it. We would gather and build several houses and check out whose is more beautiful. Sometimes fights break out when someone ruins yours. Those days were just unique as the reasoning of kids then were just so innovative and creative too. 4.The Popular Break –Time Play Picky-Picky Donkey: This is a very popular break time play that we do engage in. It’s common in the northern Nigeria back then. We would gather In a circular form with our right hands closed in a knuckle form and forwarded to the center of the circle. One of us would finger each hole on everyone’s knuckled hand while singing the “picky picky donkey song” . any hand he finishes the song on, automatically becomes a chaser of all. We’ll run into hiding and the chaser will begin to chase and whoever is touched automatically becomes the new chaser. In this play, what I hate most is hearing the school bell for returning to class especially when am the chaser. 5. The Commando Play: Back then the constant watching of action movies of Arnold Schwarznegger, Bruce Lee, Sylvester Stallone and others got into our heads so much that we would choose personalities to become out of them and begin a hide and seek shooting spree using our mouths to make sounds of gunshots and bomb blasts. Once someone points at you with the mouthy gunshot, you’ll fall to the floor and remain there for some seconds before standing up to join the abstract fight. This is one of the plays that dirty our school uniforms the most because we roll on the ground imitating the actors we claim to be. Sometimes some of us in the play wouldn’t just agree to die claiming to be “The Terminator” who never dies. In such moments, the play halts and continues after the terminator agrees to die. I guess you are also recalling the plays you were part of too. This particular play was my favorite. Add Yours!!!! http://www.edificationinfo.com/2015/06/5-unforgettable-moments-of-primary.html |

It was a sad scene at the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka following the death of a microbiology student of the institution who was alleged to have committed suicide. The student, identified as Evelyn Mogekwu, allegedly killed herself after breaking up with her fiance of seven years. It was reported that the 26-year-old undergraduate, who is normally seen in cheerful mood, suddenly changed countenance and became dejected after her fiance called her on phone to declare that their relationship is over. She was said to have bought some drugs, claiming she was having a head ache and went into her room, leaving a message for roommate that they might not see again. A moment later, her roommate who sensed something terrible was going on, raced into the room and found her lying lifeless on ground. The roommate raised an alarm that attracted other students to the room, but before help came the girl’s way, she had given up the ghost. Such a sad world. http://www.edificationinfo.com/2015/06/delsu-student-commits-suicide-after.html |

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has cut down the price of crude oil as a result of a decline in the demand of the product. In a statement released over the weekend, the NNPC said it will sell July supplies of Bonny Light crude at 23 cents more than Dated Brent. This, according to oil trading sources, was the smallest differential since 2005 and compares with a 50 cent premium in June and $2.55 a year earlier. The body also said it has lowered the official selling price for Nigeria’s largest crude oil stream, Qua Iboe, to dated Brent plus 35 cents per barrel, the lowest differential since May 2005. According to reports from the vanguard, the reduction in price was as a result of declining demand for the country’s crude oil in the international market. The action, according to oil traders, was engendered by the need for the country to join in the fight for market share. Nigeria which recquires crude oil to sell at $120-$150 dollars per barrel to sustain her national budget is currently going through hard times as a result of a fall in demand of the country’s crude and also a fall in price of crude oil in the international market. http://www..net/2015/06/nnpc-cuts-down-price-of-crude-oil-over.html |
By now, it is apparent to news watchers that President Muhammadu Buhari’s media team specialises in sending out photos to the press. Photos that are expected to somehow tell a story about Buhari. But this evening, the media team of the former military dictator turned president is may have made the mistake of their career. These photos of Buhari in his farm in hometown of Daura were released to media, but there appears to be a problem. Buhari’s attire is see-through and outstanding is his underpants. In one of the pictures, Buhari is pictured with his son, Yusuf, in another, he appears to be sending signals to his cows. The President was in Daura this weekend. This is quite unbecoming of a presidential media communication team. See the photos below. http://www..net/2015/06/photos-president-buharis-media-team.html

Every magician has more than one good trick up his sleeve, and now one of them is choosing to share some of the secrets that will help you get what you want on the job. When you were a kid, your mom probably asked you to say the “magic word” when requesting something. You quickly found out that saying “please” could get you what you wanted. But Tim Davis, a professional magician and communications expert, says there are actually seven magic words backed up by science that can help you persuade, influence and engage others. By knowing the right thing to say, you’ll be able to get your team to perform better and get others to make concessions when negotiating. He says it’s a technique he has taught to companies such as 3M and Burger King. Davis outlines the seven magic words in his book, “Magic Words”: 1. Yes. He says it’s important to remember when you’re negotiating, arguing or making a sales pitch, it’s important you get to “yes” as soon as possible. “Saying yes at the beginning of an interaction eases tension, creates rapport and opens minds,” he says. He explains that in every interaction, you are being judged in two phases. The first phase is highly emotional, illogical and often unfair. This is the phase that puts you into one of four buckets: “good, “bad,” “sexy,” or “boring.” Boring is usually the default setting, because “we can’t possibly be interested in everybody,” so the brain quickly categorizes people into the buckets. That’s why “good” and “sexy” move into phase two, while “bad” and “boring” get left behind, he explains. Further, a “yes” gives you your best chance of getting placed into the “good” bucket, he says. “Since the first phase takes only seconds to complete, the kind of ‘yes’ you’ll have to use is largely non-verbal. A smile, mirroring body language and tonality, etc.,” he explains. By finding something to agree upon with the other person, you can stop arguments from getting out of control. For example, offering a “you’re right” can ease tensions and help keep the conversation going, he says. 2. But. Allen suggests using the word “and” instead of “but.” That’s because once you add “but” to a comment, it can erase your “yes.” Another strategy is to place the information you want someone to remember the most after you say “but.” He explains that while the word “and” links two ideas together, saying “but” draws a distinct line between them. What comes before a ‘but’ is ignored and what comes after a ‘but’ is enhanced. “It’s the word that I see misused most often,” he says. 3. Because. Toddlers often ask “why” so much that their parents may simply respond “because” just to stop the constant questioning. But this points to the brain’s need for a link between cause and effect. David explains that compelling reasons that may satisfy someone include “want to,” choose to,” love to,” and “called to.” This can be especially helpful to salespeople, David says, because “people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” 4. A name. Simply saying someone’s name can be valuable in engaging the other person, and can be especially valuable when dealing with introverts. Calling someone by name and inviting feedback can make them feel their input at work is important, and lead to better conversations and collaboration. Saying someone’s name is also a good strategy when the other person becomes emotional, because using such a “pattern interrupt” gives the person time to regain his or her perspective “and keep them from saying something they regret,” he says. 5. If. “People are afraid of failure and of being wrong. Throughout our entire education, we’re rewarded if we get the right answers and punished if we get the wrong ones. This trend continues in most work environments. Eventually, people stop taking risks. They show up, punch a clock, and go through the motions. When pressed for an opinion, they often clam up or simply reply, ‘I don’t know.’ When this happens, leaders can simply use the magic word ‘if,’ saying ‘What would you say if you did know?’” David says. He further explains that “if” makes everything hypothetical. “People behave much differently when something is not going to be on the test, or when something is ‘off the record.’ They are more honest, more creative, and more resourceful. If they feel that there won’t be any accountability for a wrong decision, they’re free to take chances,” he says. 6. Help. “By asking you for help, in a way, I elevate your social status above mine. I become vulnerable and you become empowered,” he says. Further, “help” also implies a voluntary choice rather than a mandate and most people want to help when asked properly. “Studies have shown that the vast majority of us have a deep desire to make a difference in the world and to help our fellow human beings. Asking for help taps into that sense of altruism and gives people an opportunity to step outside of themselves and do something ‘for the greater good,’” he says. 7. Thanks. Expressing appreciation is magical, he says, because “it lets people know they are contributing to the lives of others, which is a deep psychological desire.” When expressing thanks, make it effective by being timely; complimenting the attributes of the benefactor; recognizing the intent; recognizing the cost to the benefactor and noting the benefits you’ve received, he suggests. Finally, David notes that by understanding how our words affect the brains of those around us, “we can make wiser choices and begin to form more effective connections.” http://www.edificationinfo.com/2015/06/the-7-words-that-will-connect-you-with.html |

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) last week arrested members of a notorious seven-man robbery gang that had been terrorizing Iyana-Ipaja, Dopemu and other areas of the state, including neighbouring Sango-Ota in Ogun. The deadly gang led by Taiwo Amosu, 19 operated by executing house-to-house raid and subjecting their victims to severe beatings before dispossessing them of cash and other valuables. The suspects disclosed that their victims’ financial status were usually judged by the interior décor of their apartments, adding that any of them who out of sheer stubbornness refused to release cash befitting of the gang’s estimation of them, risked being killed. The Ogun state born Taiwo, said he tuned to robbery in search of greener pastures. “I am an orphan and I have a younger brother to take care of. I learnt aluminum work in order to fend for myself and my younger brother but due to power failure, I do not have work to do. “My workshop is at Sango-Otta. It was in my search for greener pasture that I joined this robbery. I had gone to Agege that fateful day to play game with my friends – Owolabi, Akeem, Yaro, Damilola, Sanjo and Sunday – unknown to me, they were planning a robbery operation that night. “I reluctantly followed them to a building at Agege where they carried out a room-to-room operation. At the end, we went back to Sango-Otta to share the loot. I was made the leader of the gang when our leader, Damilola, left the gang, but he was still controlling us from where he was and we sent him returns. We usually torture any victim who claims not to have money in their houses. “Such comments provoke us. We knew the financial status of our victims because we usually carried out an assessment of them before striking. So, we did not condone lie or pretense from them because robbery is a serious business. In one of the operations at New Garage, we disarmed security men of their arms. When we accost any security man during operation, we normally use him as a bait to gain entry into the apartments and at the end, we would lock our victims from outside. “We only covered our faces in areas where we feel we could be recognized. But we hardly operate around our places of abode. Our targets during operation are phones, laptops and cash. We do not shoot our victims; we only beat them and threatened to shoot if they misbehaved. We usually share our loot at Agege Motor Park. “I get between N10,000 to N30,000 at the end of each operation depending on how much was realized”, stated Taiwo who was also said to have been detained last year at the dreaded SARS over a case of cultism. He was reportedly the first to be apprehended by SARS operatives. His confession led to the arrest of two other suspected members of the gang; Jamiu Amsat, 28 and Owolabi Aremu, 22. Another suspect who was identified as the amourer for the gang, and who is simply called Amsat, claimed he had never gone to any operation with the gang. He only admitted to being the gang’s armourer. According to him, “I have never gone to rob with them. I only keep their weapons at the end of which I got between N15,000 and N20,000. Several times, they tried to convince me to join them but I could not because I do not have the emotions to stand it and I do not want to kill anyone till I die.” However, the third suspect, Owolabi Aremu, boldly described himself as the gang’s ‘bad man’, disclosing that during operation, he usually intimidated their victims with his deep voice that sounds like a roaring lion. Aremu who resides at Atubaje Street in Agege opened up: “Whenever we approached our victims and they refused to part with money befitting our assessment of them, I would shout in my baritone voice which usually put fear into them. If, for instance, we assessed a victim for N500,000 and they brought N100,000, I would hit them hard in the face and shout, thereby forcing them to bring out the required amount. We usually take Indian hemp and alcholic drink before going for operation. That way, we would be able to do and undo.” http://www..net/2015/06/photo-police-arrest-lagos-terror.html

P-square Brothers, Peter and Paul Okoye have revealed they called going to church quit in 2007. Despite their penchant for fasting and prayers, they have not been going to church for close to a decade, but they insisted the action has not affected their close relationship with God, and is also not a result of arrogance. According to reports online, the Okoye brothers said they tried their hands on a couple of churches in their various area of residence but had to put an end to it after congregations kept focusing on them rather than their maker. “Each time we attend, other worshipers would not listen to the Pastor’s sermon again. All eyes will just be on us. Instead of praying, some people will even decide to be starring at us. We were not comfortable with that and thought we were distracting a lot of people from serving their God, so we said to ourselves that we should stop going. All men are equal before God, so we don’t encourage people to abandon their primary purpose of being in church because of us.” http://www..net/2015/06/we-stopped-going-to-church-since-2007-p.html

Nigerian Professor Produces Antivirt, An Anti Viral Drug For Treating HIV AIDS. Despite doubts in some quarters about the authenticity of his claims, Professor Maduike Ezeibe of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State, has insisted that his recent therapy for the dreaded HIV and AIDS is real and effective. The discovery of the therapy, Ezeibe said, was a major scientific breakthrough in the search for a cure to the global pandemic. He said after 19 years of hard work, he was able to discover the therapy and his research was eventually published in the British Journal of Medicine & Medical Research. The Professor of Veterinary Medicine, who obtained his first degree in same discipline at the University of Nigeria Nsukka in 1986, Masters in Ruminant Medicine, and doctorate degree in Canine Medicine all in UNN, said he moved to MOUAU on leave of absence. Speaking with Southern City News in his office, he said his research into the therapy known as ‘Antivirt’ (Anti-Viral Therapy), dated back to 1994 when he took the challenge to be part of the global solution to the HIV/AIDS scourge ravaging humanity. Ezeibe said his work had been published by the American-based medical journal known as The Health. He said he decided to publish his research work on the therapy so as to prove anyone who would doubt that a black man could develop HIV/AIDS cure, wrong. He boasted that the experiment remained authentic and verifiable in any part of the world. According to him, two essential minerals – aluminum silicate (kaolin) and magnesium silicate, used in the production of the therapy, have large deposits in Umuahia and parts of Abia State. This, he said, would make the therapy cheaper and more affordable than the old anti-retroviral therapy. He added that the therapy would take an average of two to three months to cure HIV/AIDS patient. http://www..net/2015/06/photo-nigerian-professor-claims-his.html

Virtually everybody born before the invention of the internet must have heard the tale of a nonexistent football match between Nigeria and India grin that obviously took place in a parallel universe and somehow we got to hear the gory stories of that match. Though there are many variations of the story, every prevaricator seems to agree on a couple of facts about this fictional football match. Each storyteller agrees that; 1. This match ended with India scoring 99 goals and Nigeria scoring just one goal. 2. Nigerians where unable to kick the ball because the football kept turning to a lion (or something scary) to prevent them from playing the soccer ball. 3. The Indians later agreed that if Nigeria could score a goal, they would concede defeat 4. Samuel Okwaraji scored the winning goal and lost his life in the process. 5. FIFA banned India from soccer because they used black magic in that very game With the help of common sense (not that it was absent back then), quick access to information and the internet, every right thinking Nigerian has come to realise that such a story should be filled under “Blatant Lies”. Why Did This Story Thrive For So Long? Most people like to pass off this story as true with the fact that no one has ever seen India in an International Football Match. Since no one actually saw India participate in most international soccer games, this gave a little credence to the story. Another reason this lie could thrive for long was the fact that credible information was not readily available at our finger tips. It not like every Emeka, Audu and Ojo could visit Google in a matter of minutes and tell our ominous fabricators that they should stop spreading toxic lies. And to be honest we have a tingling feeling that this lie was concocted by an elder of a community because, let’s be honest who questions the words of the elders in Nigeria. Remember, what an adult sees sitting down a child will never see even if he consults Google, Siri or Cortana. The Element of Truth In This Story On the 12th of August 1989, Nigeria lost Sam Okwaraji. Sam Okwaraji was the player rumored to have lost his life in that game when in truth he died during a FIFA World Cup qualifying game against Angola in the 77th minute. He collapsed and died of cognitive heart failure. May his soul rest in Perfect Peace. AMEN So that is the only truthful thing about that story, the fact that a Nigerian player died during a football match. That’s it. The match was not against India, we did not lose the match and as you must have guessed, and there were no lions either. http://www..net/2015/06/the-truth-about-early-1900s-nigeria-vs.html

The Kogi State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has said that the State Government is owing the Basic Education Teachers in the State the sum of N23 billion. According to the state NUT Chairman, Comrade Suleman Abdullahi, who narrated the sad experience the teachers are passing through, about N8.7billion of this debt are arrears of their four years leave allowance. He said the backlog of unpaid grants to the teachers is demotivating them from discharging their duties diligently. The NUT leader charged the State Government to show more commitment and be proactive on the welfare of teachers. Abdullahi said: “At present, teachers can not pay medical expenses of their loved ones nor feed well while they are being ejected from their houses due to inability to pay rent. “Government has done not less than six screening exercises since 2008 to date but the question is why has there not been official position by the government on all these reports? We expect the government to use the report to determine the number of teachers, pay four years leave grant, pay outstanding from the various percentages, implement promotion and pay salaries as at when due,” he added. http://www.edificationinfo.com/2015/06/kogi-state-owes-teachers-23-billion.html |

Mr.Lana said due to the government’s repeated failure on some clauses in the existing Collective Agreements over the past four years, the union reserves the right not to sign any “promissory Agreement” with the State Government on certain issues plaguing the sector. “We have demonstrated great sense of endurance and patriotism by continuing to work under the extremely painful and uncertain conditions created by the unresolved issues for so long,” he said.
