Politics67 Migrants Drown As Boats Capsized Off Libya, 3000 Rescued Including Nigerians by harbdulrasaq88(op): 6:09am On Aug 28, 2015

67 migrants are feared dead off Libya and the coastal town of Zuwara after more than 3,000 people attempted the crossing between Tuesday and Wednesday. The crew of the Swedish rescue vessel Poseidon discovered around 52 bodies in the hold of a wooden boat from which around 400 people were rescued some 30 miles north of Libya.

They were found close to the engine and are believed to have died from inhalation of engine fumes and asphyxia. Originally, rescuers counted 30 bodies but a spokesman for the Italian coastguard said the real death toll stands at 52.

In a separate incident, another 15 people are feared drowned after their boat capsized around five miles off the coastal town of Zuwara on Wednesday. A spokesman for the coastguard there said they had saved 20 people and recovered three bodies. The survivors, primarily from Nigeria and Ghana, told the coastguard they were traveling in a group of about 40 when their boat overturned in bad weather. They had only travelled some four hours after they left the shoreline.

The coastguard started the rescue at 4am and continued with the search into the afternoon but no more bodies were spotted. The tragedies came during an especially busy day in the waters outside Libya. The Italian coastguard said in a statement that around 3,000 people had been rescued in 10 different operations throughout Wednesday on the central Mediterranean route to Europe. That brings the total number of people rescued since Saturday to about 8,170 people.

Rescuers from the Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS), Medicines Sans Frontieres (MSF), the Swedish coastguard and Italian Navy rescued at least 1,800 people between themselves. Most of them were picked up within a square mile some 30 miles north of Zuwara. Around 11am, rescuers from the Poseidon and MOAS were engaged with the boat in which the bodies were discovered when another wooden vessel with 600 migrants appeared on the horizon. An hour later, a dinghy with some 100 people on board was heading towards the rescue vessels.

The result is that some 150 people were left stranded on the wooden boat waiting while the Italian navy vessel Fiorillo made its way to the area because all other vessels in the area were filled to capacity. People started feeling sick provoking a chain reaction, while many more suffered from dehydration. Eventually, a doctor from MSF treated the most pressing cases and rescuers from MOAS supplied water making the wait more bearable.

According to Migrant Report, the migrants left Zuwara at around midnight between Tuesday and Wednesday. Most are from Pakistan and Bangladesh and sub-Saharan Africa.

PoliticsPOST UTME 2015: 11 Federal Institutions Made Over N1.5bn! by harbdulrasaq88(op): 7:58am On Aug 21, 2015
Eleven federal universities are to share the sum of N1,577,414,000 or 1.5billion Naira in the on going post UTME exercise across tertiary institutions nationwide.

Year in year out as students in Nigeria conclude their secondary school education, they aspire to further their studies in tertiary institutions. The first step in the series of stepping stones is WAEC, GCE or NECO, then comes JAMB. The last is post UTME which some quarters say is irrelevant since JAMB exists and others say is important as tertiary institutions use it to further “sift the dirt from the shaft.”

Upon the purchase of University of Benin post-UTME forms, 60, 020 applicants, at 3,550 Naira each, would add 213,071,000/213million to the school’s coffers. Being renowned for having the highest number of applicants, University of Ilorin has 85, 945 applicants who picked up the forms at 4000naira each and provided the school with 343,780,000/ 343million. The Lion’s Den was not left out as the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with 57, 539 prospective students, at N2,000 trapped 115,078,000/ N115million.

Birthed by Delta State Government, Delta State University would bracket 236,562,000 / 236 million, from 78,854 applicants at N3,000 each, whether they are admitted or not, whether they succeed in writing the exam or not. In the heart of the nation’s economic capital, University of Lagos, with 49,059 applicants would bag 96,236,000/ 196 million at N4,000 per form.

The first capital of the nation, Calabar in Cross River State which hosts University of Calabar has generated N116,837,500/ 116million from 17,975 applicants at 6,500 per form.

Thirty eight thousand five hundred and twenty (38,520) applicants purchased UTME form at N4,500 from University of Ibadan, that would accrue N173,340,000 to the institution. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, which exists for learning and culture charged each of the 34,409 applicants N3,500 and bagged N120,431,500/ 120million.

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and University of Port-Harcourt both charged 52, 785 and 28, 254 applicants respectively N2,000 for UTME and bagged N105,570,000 and N56,508,000 respectively.

Despite the large number of applicants, the highest number that can be admitted in varsities is five to six thousand. The question then is; what happens to the rest?

PoliticsBabcock University Students Lament Increase In School Fees; See School Fees List by harbdulrasaq88(op): 6:56am On Aug 19, 2015
Babcock University today unveiled the new school fees and many students aren't happy about it. One student told www.edificationinfo.com that last year she paid N690k and now she's paying close to N900k this semester. See screenshots of the increased fees and what some of the students are saying after the cut...

"How can a school professing to be a christian institution increase fees so high? Last year I paid #600K and now I have to pay #922,380? The worst part is that school is resuming on the 31st of august! Pls I'm in my final year, I don't know how my parents will fund such a huge sum in such short time. Please help us! Let the whole world see how wicked, insensitive, and commercial this school is." on student said

"Our school suddenly increased the fees by well over N200k just a week before school resumes. Things are hard and the school isn't even considerate of that. They look for all avenues to exploit student, like making a N60k educational tab compulsory. Pls appeal to the school to do a downward review of the fee so as some of us won't have to drop out." another student told LIB.

"I am a student of Babcock University, 400level who is left with just a semester to leave school. However, just yesterday, it was noted that the school fees has been increased by almost 100%. For someone like me who is initially meant to pay 300k now is paying 580k. However, the students association tried their best to negotiate this out, but it seems like exercise in futility. We have decided to go through media to bring the attention of the public to help us fight this out, as students cannot protest as this will result to immediate suspension and expulsion from the institution." said another student

"Law Students will now pay 1.5million as against the 700/800k as of last session. Theology students will also pay 800k as opposed to the 350k they paid last session." a student said

Politics“I Can’t Be Intimidated By Anyone” - Fayose To Buhari by harbdulrasaq88(op): 9:07am On Aug 17, 2015

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has urged President Mohammadu Buhari to tread cautiously and be mindful of the body language of those hailing him today, saying; “the president should be cautious enough to know that the former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar led National Peace Committee tactically told him to tread cautiously and be mindful of the fact that he is not heading a military government.”

The governor, who said he was not unaware of the sinister plot to destabilise his government because of his strong and truthful stands on national issues, vowed not to be cowed by threat from any quarter.
According to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor said; “opposition is one of the roots on which democracy stands and any
President or Governor that does not want opposition will eventually become a dictator.

"I want to state without fear or favour that I will continue to speak the truth no matter whose ox is gored.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us and no one can intimidate me or the good people of Ekiti State who freely and overwhelmingly gave me their mandate.

“Democracy as a form of government thrives on our ability to ask questions and get answers from leaders," he said.

He urged the President to listen to wise counsel from the General Abdulsalami Abubakar led National Peace Committee saying; “the Peace Committee has reminded the president that he is not heading a military government and with the calibre of Nigerians in the Committee, their wise counsel should not be ignored.

"These are Nigerians who don't need personal favours from the President and he should get the message very clearly that he is being told not to act as a dictator.”

Governor Fayose said the President should also know that Nigerians are not interested in any honeymoon, but their well-being.

His words; “rather than concentrate and make a difference within his 100 days in office, the president’s greatest achievement so far is harassment of PDP leaders, appointment of his in-law and kinsmen into sensitive positions, selective fight against corruption and arrest and detention of INEC officials who worked in States won by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).”

While declaring support for the fight against corruption, Governor Fayose however said; “fighting corruption should not be synonymous with convicting Nigerians on pages of newspapers. Rather, the
judiciary and other relevant agencies should be allowed to do their jobs without any direct or indirect interference from the President and his party.

"Corruption must be fought in accordance with the laws of the land because going against the laws of the land and the oath taken by the President to respect the constitution in itself is corruption."

Politics“there’s No Abobaku, We Don’t Use People For Rituals” – Ife Chiefs by harbdulrasaq88(op): 6:38pm On Aug 15, 2015
Last week, Nigerian social media was abuzz with a possibly misinformed piece of information that a certain Abobaku had gone missing.

It was widely opined that Abobaku, is the individual selected to be buried with the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade.

However, Ile-Ife chiefs have denied that an Abobaku was to be buried with the deceased monarch.

They refuted the claims that five people went missing during the Oro festival performed as part of the burial rites for the late Ooni.

As for the Abobaku, also known as Sarun, the chiefs stated that the reports that he had fled to escape being buried with the king, were false.

Lowa Adimula of Ife, Oba Joseph Ijaodola, who also doubles as the Head of Inner Chiefs, was quoted to have said: “No one was caught during the Oro festival, it is all lies. It has never been done in Ife land that somebody must be killed or buried with the Ooni.”

Similarly, the Laadim Adimula of Ife and Secretary of Royal Traditional Council, High Chief Adekoye Odewole, also debunked the insinuation.

He was quoted to have said: “We don’t use human beings for rituals in Ile-Ife. We can use rams, goats or other animals, but not human beings.”

My God, I’m short of words! “Uncle Ben Ochenjele, may your soul rest in the bosom of our Lord Jesus Christ"he wrote. My God, what can I say than to give you all the glory; but I must confess I feel the pain inside of me, because this was the same person who contributed largely to my marriage (wedding). My God, I’m short of words!

A report from an inside source has revealed the daily routine of President Muhammadu Buhari, as he presides over the affairs of Nigeria from Aso Rock. Senior Special Assistant on Media to the President, Mallam Garba Shehu , who spoke on the tight schedule of the president , said:

“Maybe because of his military background, the President wakes up early and he is an avid listener to radio stations. Before he reports for work by7am, he must have listened to all the talk shows on radio and you will be amazed how he picks you up on some national issues discussed on radio. Most times, he starts his day by 6am.

“The President works from the early hours of the day till 1am and 2am. In fact, there was a time the team around him had a meeting and expressed worries that the President was having only three hours of sleep. They therefore redesigned his schedule by saying no more appointment by 9pm. The new policy did not last more than one week. After that, the President worked till 1am.”

Shehu who responded to a question on the issue said:

“I think it has to do with his military training because it got to a point that one of the youngest staff working with the President could not cope with his schedule.”

A LIB reader writes in;

"This is an example of the disgrace that parade himself as a police officer. The time is 12:00 and he was so drunk that he fell inside that dirty gutter. This happened along old Ife road in Ibadan. To make matters worse, he is a traffic officer that was attached to Onipepeye Junction. I hope something can be done about this."

“They were turning Boko Haram to a religious issue. It is not a religious issue. He (Jonathan) was seeing it as a northern plan. It wasn’t. It was a menace waiting to happen, and he didn’t see it that way, which was unfortunate,” Mr. Obasanjo said, a sad expression crossing his dark face.

“I did everything I could to help him.”

CrimePHOTOS: Nigerian Man Beats His Mother To Death With A Chair In The US by harbdulrasaq88(op): 6:33am On Aug 06, 2015

A Nigerian man living in the United States has been charged with murder after his mother was found dead at her Regency Park apartment in Texas USA.

Dr Hauwa Esther Kadima, 61, was found dead on July 28 after officers received a call from her son Daniel Basor Kadima, 31, alerting them of a person believed to be dead at her apartment

Daniel called 911 about 9 a.m. July 28 and told dispatchers he was calling to report a death, according to the warrant, which was released Monday. When asked when he had last seen the deceased, he responded “yesterday,” police said. Kadima identified himself but did not say the
victim’s name or the nature of their relationship.

According to the warrant, when he was asked what had happened, Kadima responded, “My duty is just to call in and let you know.”

Officers say they arrived and found Hauwa Kadima lying on the floor next to a broken wooden chair. Initial autopsy findings showed she had fractures to her skull, with laceration of the brain because of blunt impact to the head. Daniel had beaten her to death with the chair.

Kadima is being held in the Gregg County Jail. His total bond is set at $100,005,500.

In a sworn affidavit filed in the Gregg County District Clerk's Office, Daniel's ex-wife recounted past assaults and abuse from him, including four years ago when he allegedly head-butted her, breaking one of her teeth and busting her lip. She said he also would take her keys and lock her outside their apartment, but also restrain her when she wanted to leave their home. He also had video cameras installed in their marital home, video recording their daughter.

"He eventually had a mental breakdown and was arrested multiple times," the ex-wfe said in the affidavit. "He was committed to a mental health facility."

Mrs Hauwa's friends described her as a devout Christian, and well-educated with degrees from Wheaton College. They say she had a vision for her native Nigeria.

"She had a passion for wanting to start a school back in her hometown. She didn't go back to fulfill her dream," Rev. Mary Collier says.
