BritneyStacy:Stop the pepper soup. The spices in it might be the culprit. Maybe you've been eating too much unripe plantain. Just change your meals and see if there's any improvement. |
BritneyStacy:Very loose poo every 2-3 hours for a baby that age is a lot. that means he poos averagely 5 times a day between 8am and 6pm. I personally think that's too much. At your baby's age, mine was on about 180ml of milk and peaked at about 220ml when he was around 5 months old. At that age he was getting minimum 6 diaper changes - soiled or not. since you are breastfeeding, what is your diet like? Are you taking too much fruits? Too much honey? Too much sugary food? Too much vegetables? I am a big fan of Ribena and anytime I took it during the first weeks of breastfeeding, my son always ended up pooing frequently than usual and his poo was very loose. Even when I hid to sip my Ribena, my mum always knew as the tell tale signs were there once she changed his diapers and she would scream 'mummy ribena' . I had to give up Ribena.I think you should watch what you eat, change your diet and see if there are any changes. If the frequency of his poo is still the same, seek the opinion of a doctor. if your baby is formula fed, then maybe you should try another brand as that might also be responsible for the frequent poo. |
^^^ looking at the cost price abroad, that's pricy. Limsycutey, if you can afford it, just buy it. Its worth it and it can be used for other kids in future. Another option is to look for other aspirators with similar design although I won't be surprised if it's hard to get one as the nosefrida design might be patented. Rezzy. I will add to what the other ladies have said. Your son should have shown signs of improvement by now. At least, the stooling should have stopped. Please take him to a children hospital with paediatricians experienced in managing such health condition. |
limsycutey: limsycutey:What type of aspirator have you using ? Is it the "bulb" type? I find them completely useless as they remove little or nothing. I attached pictures of a very good aspirator - "nosefrida nasal aspirator". If you can get it where you are based, it's really good. It's a bit similar with the hospital aspirator ( at the hospital, the child is swaddled with a cloth and a tube/pipe is inserted the right into the child nostrils and pressure is used from a tube like machine to remove all the snot and mucus - a very heartbreaking and rather distressing procedure to watch I must say). With this aspirator, you use your mouth to suck the tube and all the mucus is extracted out. You can read online for more information/reviews on it. http://nosefrida.weebly.com http://m.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=22402086

blank:Attached is a picture of the instructions enclosed in the pack of silverbird. I have also attached pictures of the pack and also the bottle. Kindly point out to me where the manufacturers have stated that the oil should not be applied on the skin. If you want to criticise, at least be factual about it. I have said it countless times on this thread that anything I post is what works for me. It's not mandatory for anyone to go with my method biko.

Jennifer89:Congrats dear on the birth of your son. Infacol worked perfectly for me and I will personally recommend it. Doctors insist babies will outgrow it - which is true but seeing one's baby in such pain and discomfort is heartbreaking. In addition to infacol, always ensure you burp him after each feed. A close friend of mine swears by gripe water. She told me she adds it into her baby's formula and that was the only thing that stopped her son's colic. Other mums here have mentioned baby exercise such as laying the baby on their tummy or moving their legs in cycle motions. So it's up to you to decide which method you want to try. |
limsycutey:Nasal aspirator should be used occasionally as it can make the whole situation worse. Have you tried silverbird? Get original silverbird and dilute it with any oil (coconut or baby oil) and apply it on the crown of his head. Apply it on his head after every bath time and occasionally during the night whilst he's asleep. Silverbird must be super diluted as it's quite strong. You can also apply a few drops around his cot. Remember again to really dilute silverbird with the oil and the smell of the oil must not be over powering. Once he's 12 weeks old, buy OLBAS OIL. Apply the oil on his clothes, cot, etc few times a day. Olbas oil helps in relieving nasal congestion. Another option that's recommended by doctors is to run a hot/warm shower in the bathroom with the door closed and after some few minutes, take your baby to the bathroom and have him inhale the steam. i have tried this personally a few times but it didn't work for me until I tried the silverbird method. Another method is to place a bucket of hot water near you and have someone cover you (your baby on your laps) with a blanket and then your baby can inhale the steam. I have tried this (I sprinkled silverbird in the water) and it did work. I also used an aspirator immediately after and I was able to suck out a lot of mucus. However, you have to be very very very careful with this method because of the hot water so as to avoid any accident or burns. Finally, have you taken him to the hospital to complain and have your son looked at? If its a case of serious congestion, the catarrah might have to be sucked out using a specialised hospital aspirator. Your doctor might however decide not to do anything as they feel this is a phase that will pass.

Godmother:Congrats on the birth of your daughter. First of all, is your breastmilk flowing? If it's not, she won't be encouraged to suck because she's hungry and she's expecting the taste of milk in her mouth. However, if you are sure your milk is flowing, then keep breastfeeding AFTER she's being bottle fed and in between meal times (when she's not hungry). Even if all she does is to suck for few minutes, don't be discouraged and continue. If you do this persistently, she will get used to the texture of the nipple in her mouth. I will also suggest you do a bit of skin to skin contact. Drape her in blankets and cuddle her next to your topless chest. Skin to skin contact has been said to encourage the flow of breastmilk. |

eolowu1:Jamb qweshion @ bolded. Some people start after one week. Those mamas know themselves and I raise Beyoncé's hands in salute. ![]() Yes. You can start wearing jeans. As long as the waist band isn't too tight. Personally, I found out that jeans wasn't the problem but a belt was. So I didn't wear a belt with my jeans till I felt comfortable to do so.

rezzy:In future, for his teething, get original bongela teething gel and apply it on his gums. You can also apply it on his teething ring and get him to suck/chew on it. That said, teething is not responsible for loss of appetite, loss in weight or runny poo. There's an underlying issue and it's the job of the Doctor to find out. Even something as basic as tonsillitis can lead to reduced appetite in a baby. I hope you've taken him to another hospital. A doctor claiming not to find a vein on a child is unserious. All he needs is an infrared light and it picks all the vein on any part of the body where the light is shone. |
rezzy:How old is your baby ? If you are not happy with the quality of care you are receiving at the general hospital, please take him to a private hospital with a resident peadrictrian that can look after him. |
Baroba:You are right. Rather than just "close eyes" and put the child in a nursery and pay nursery fees or use a registered/qualified child minder, they go the cheap route and employ these "nannies". Most of these nannies are either illegals or people on holiday but looking at making some quick cash. Who in their right mind force feeds a baby? It's no surprise why nigeria has one of the highest child mortality rates in the world. Be not deceived. Many kids in nigeria have died this way but as there's no autopsy or surveillance camera, the adult simply states that the child's death is unexplained or blames it on some spritual force that has attacked the child. |
tatacherie:Sending lots of hugs your way. ![]() |
ClassCaptain:How do you know this? Has you seen the album's track list? |
Why didn't she set up the NGO before her father became president. The article confirms that the NGO was set up 3 months ago (July). Buhari really needs to call his daughters to order because if he fails to do so, they will soon start frolicking with politicians, lobbyists, etc. |
kudre10:Honestly. Really!!! I do not understand his daughters' fascination with NGOs. Can't they just stick to their day jobs? It's like his daughters are trying to outshine each other with this NGO thing. Buhari should call them to order. |
Onegai I'm thinking of trying dove sensitive but I'm a bit concerned about it getting to my son's eyes as this is sometimes inevitable during bath time. Please does it contain a "no tears" formula? I know it's technically not a baby's soap or marketed as one. |
olubankemi:Yup. She's bang on. Solids are best introduced after 6 months and that's the recommended advice from peadictrians, nutritionists, health visitors, etc. I waited till he was 6 months old and I'm glad I did. |
This case only confirms the rot in Nigeria's banking system. An account is left dormant for 4 years and then suddenly, there are random cash deposits from unidentified sources totally 4m naira within 4 months. Isn't that a red flag on its own? Was a SAR raised by the staff of access bank? Did she explain the source of the sudden random cash deposits? FKK I'm sure is a PEP and by association, Precious is a PEP too. Isn't that enough to have raised suspicions with the bank? Why wait before EFCC intervenes before putting a 'no debit or credit' order on the account? |
Zheemub:Hmmm. This your question is serious jamb question o especially number 1. It's really hard to work out how long baby cereal will stretch for because babies all feed differently. Since you are just about to start weaning, its best you buy the lower quantity to start with (350g or any smaller one available) and do not buy in bulk. This is because you do not know whether or not your baby will like the cereal/baby food you've bought for her. Once you know the brand/flavour your baby likes best, then you can buy larger packs. Babies are funny. You might end up buying 350g (he finishes it) and then you buy the 900g tin only for the child to refuse it outrightly. So just prepare your mind. It can be quite hard to stick to a budget with babies. I learnt this lesson the hard way. I am still stuck with 3 packs of Cow and Gate's "my first banana muesli". I don't blame my son though for refusing it - I tried it and it tasted like saw dust ![]() Question 3 - if I remember correctly, any unused food that's left in the food jar must be thrown away. Majority of prepared baby meals in jars and pouches do not contain preservatives so they have very short shelf life. I only resort to jars and pouches when travelling outside my base. There's nothing like home made baby meals - it's cheaper and healthier. The same rule applies to baby yogurt. Any leftover should be discarded so as to avoid food poisoning. Other mums can address your other questions. |
rezzy:It's normal for a baby to be cranky after immunisation. He will be fine, don't worry. Just keep giving him lots of cuddles and keep trying to breastfeed him. Has he been tested for malaria? How do you know he has malaria? If he has been tested for malaria and malaria is confirmed, then it's the doctor's responsibility to prescribe the most appropriate malaria drug for your baby based on his age, weight and how serious the malaria is. Please let's be careful with self medication in babies. Anything outside paracetamol/ibruofen and multivitamin should be prescribed by a doctor. |
Doubledouble:You owe me champagne ![]() You have to keep trying different varieties as he will soon get bored of this combo sooner or later. For example, you can continue the chicken and vegs purée but throw in a bit of potatoes or pasta. You can swap the chicken for fish. Rather than assorted vegetables, you can use just carrot. You can also replace the chicken with boiled beef. Have you tried wheat (the Honeywell brand)? He might prefer it to semo. I have tried wheat and plain ewedu and my son loves it. Feel free to experiment even if the combo comes across as weird. ![]() |
pweeeetychi:I don't think custard is suitable for a baby that age. Custard can sometimes contain too much sugar. Why not look at other healthy alternatives such as baby rice or just boil and blend potatoes and mixed vegetables? How long has he been stooling ? How many times has he stooled today? If it's been more than 5-6 times, please take him to the hospital. Make sure he drinks water often as he needs it to remain hydrated. If it's less, you can quickly prepare "salt and sugar solution" and give him about 10ml - 30ml to drink using a feeding bottle (if he uses one). I have tried this twice and it worked. Make sure the water is properly boiled and put about half a tea spoon of salt with one tea spoon of sugar in about 30ml of water. Make sure you taste it before you give him. It must not be too salty or too sweet. It should taste a bit funny. |
zimunachimdi:@ bolded. Cereal is just a generic name for the likes of corn flakes, golden morn, celerac, etc as they are made from oats, rice, maize, wheat, milk, etc. If you can, why not chill a bit till he's 6 months before you introduce solids ? At 6 months, babies have better head control, digestive system is more developed to process/digest solids, etc. Personally, I wasn't in any rush to introduce solids and my son was on strictly milk for 6 whole months and I introduced fruits/cereal at the start of his 7th month. I'm of the opinion that these babies have a lifetime ahead of eating all sorts of cereal, amala, eba, semo, etc so there's no rush. So spending 6 months strictly on milk won't hurt. People claim that introducing solids early means a baby will not be a fussy eater. That's complete fallacy. My son eats/ drinks anything with the exception of sweet drinks - he has outrightly refused nido milk (any cow's milk), hot chocolate (milo + nido) and even Ribena. However, if you insist on starting solids at 4 months, do bear in mind that milk should remain his main source of nutrition and go with solids that are easily digestible by babies. |
cutiereborn:For the stuffy nose/runny nose/catarrah, have you tried silverbird diluted with any oil (olive oil or coconut oil or baby oil). Put a capful of silverbird in about 30ml of oil (I use a spray bottle). Apply it on your baby's head (the crown). It works like a charm. You can also sprinkle a few drops of the diluted silverbird on your baby's clothing or on her bed sheet. For the cough, please take her to the hospital. Once a cough sounds chesty (serious) and it's been ongoing for 7-10 days, then it's likely it's bacterial and a doctor needs to prescribe mild antibiotics. Vitamin C will do little or nothing. |
ify4charm:Electric breast pump doesn't work for everybody. One of the things I regretted buying is the medela electric breast pump. A rather I dumped it after using it for a few days and I continuing breast feeding my baby (not worrying whether milk was flowing or not) while supplementing with formula and drinking lots of hot water, tea, etc. Within two weeks or so,my milk started flowing to the extent that it would soak the sheets if I didn't wear a breast pad. 13 months on and my milk still flows well and I'm still actively breastfeeding. adanny01:What part of the north are you based? There should be a speech therapist so someone with the expertise to tell you what to do. As his father, you have a major role to play. Go to YouTube. Many videos available to help. Read online on what you can do. Buy books on self help. Most importantly be patient and very consistent as that's the only way you will see results. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2_mgt87g1Y |
lastbornop:Number 1 - How many times does he stool a day? At his age, watery stool isn't uncommon. It's also possible he's not getting enough quality milk from you. That said, why not take him back to the hospital ? If you are not happy with the quality of care from your current hospital, please go to another hospital. For question number 2, excessive crying might be hunger. Are you sure your milk is flowing properly? A bulging stomach is not a sign that your baby is "full" of breast milk. Try and introduce formula, feed him as often as stated on the tin but keep breastfeeding him till you are sure your milk flows well. I think introducing formula might also help with question 1. I have not experienced question 3 personally but I think it's been addressed on this thread previously. Wait for a mum that has experienced this to answer you. |
Tojued Alphahandmaiden has said it all. I usually discard mine after 4 hours. My son's nursery discards after 1 hour and will not accept any formula already prepared from home (they have their reasons as its so easy to give a baby unintentionally stale milk and you have parents that might have forgotten/mixed up the time the formula was prepared before bringing their child in). I use this avent milk powder dispenser (see attached pictures) and I fill each section with the required number of scoops. To avoid under or over feeding, I label the lid with the required quantity (eg. 100ml). That way any of his caregivers know the required quantity to give him without referring to any paperwork or trying to remember the instructions I gave them. Depending on the age of your baby and how many times he feeds while you are away, you might need two or three of the dispensers. It also saves you handing over your tin of formula to his caregiver. The blue insert in the the storage container can easily be removed which means without the blue insert, you can use the container to package/store your baby's solid food, fruits, etc as soon as he's weaned.
