For the majority of states(about 48 or so) the person who wins the popular votes automatically wins the state's total electoral votes.

Also each state is allocated a certain number of electoral votes according to their representatives or population(something along that line).

Do you know that Trump won many more states than Hillary? that's why he won the presidency. The electors cannot just go vote against the winner of the popular votes of their respective state.

To be very frank the electoral college is a very good system that makes sure a few states do not continue to dictate who becomes the president over and over.
