The children can't be so callous towards their parents, especially the female ones. The mother is at fault, sleeping around when her motherly love was highly needed.

Mrs Esther Kanebi
Mrs Esther Kanebi

• No, she abandoned us –Son

Home for Mrs Esther Kanebi is worse than a pigsty. The squalid structure built with weakened bamboo sticks and thinly draped with thorn polyethene sheets and mosquito net can barely protect her from the elements.

The damp environment, which was littered with filth and vegetation provided ample breeding ground for mosquitoes and rodents.

Weakened by malnutrition and sickness that had ravaged her shrivelled body for years, the 76-year-old widow laid curled up in a corner of the hut, surrounded by old items, which Sunday PUNCH learnt were the only personal belongings she had.

Kanebi’s story is that of absolute abandonment, pain and penury. Her predicament is one that no mother prays to experience or recount, and a typical example of falling from grace to grass.

Sunday PUNCH’s attention was drawn to the dire plight of the woman by a concerned Nigerian, Chinelo Okafor. The young lady, known on Facebook as Nelojosh, told our correspondent that she was heartbroken after learning about Kanebi’s predicament and that she remained committed to ensuring that she got a new lease of life.

From banking to abject penury

Many may find it difficult to believe that Kanebi, who cut quite a pitiable sight, was once a top-notch banker.

Our correspondent gathered that she was an employee of African Continental Bank, a major indigenous bank that became distressed in the early 1990.

The widow claimed to have been among those unceremoniously disengaged from service and was not paid her severance benefits in full after the bank was taken over by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Abandoned by children and in-laws

Our correspondent learnt that Kanebi was allegedly abandoned by her three children and late husband’s family, and left for dead.

Sunday PUNCH reliably gathered that though she was married to the late Mr John Kanebi from the Idumu Ohagbeme Quarters, Onicha Olona, in the Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, the dingy hut, which has been her home for over a decade, sits on her parent’s land in the Ogbeofu Quarters, Ezi in the same local government area.

According to Mrs Kanebi, after the demise of her husband, she was rejected by his family members, who were unhappy that she did not give them money while working in the bank.

Kanebi also claimed that they wanted her to remarry her late husband’s brother, Ifeanyi, and became embittered when she turned down their proposal.

The elderly woman further alleged that her three children, Joe, Peter and Agilika, who were residing in Lagos, were rich but chose to turn their back on her.

In a raspy voice laden with emotion, Mrs Kanebi went down memory lane to chronicle a life that was once enmeshed in splendour, but later culminated in abject penury.

She recounted, “I am a widow. My husband died when I was very young. After his death, his family wanted me to get married to his younger brother, but I refused.

“Before then, I had issues with them, especially with my mother-in-law. After my husband’s burial, I performed all the traditional rites and returned to my job in Lagos.

“After a while, the bank became distressed and everybody’s appointment was terminated. Before then, many of us were pencilled down for promotion.

“None of the staff members was paid complete benefits. I was paid in bits and pieces and could not do anything meaningful with the money. I wanted to use my benefits to start life afresh, because after my husband died, his family members were not willing to support me and the children.”

Kanebi alleged that she was left to bear the burial expenses of her husband because the family felt she made a lot of money as a banker.

“When people hear that you work in a bank or an insurance company, they tend to believe that you have lots of money. That was what happened to me after my husband’s death,” she added.

Left to die

On how she ended up almost as a destitute, Kanebi said after she lost her job and husband, she became very sick and practically begged to feed.

The widow claimed that she later went to live with her second son, Peter, but that he rented another apartment after some months and moved out with his family

She recounted, “He left the apartment for me. I almost died in Lagos. At one point, I begged to feed and slept near drainages. Sometimes, neighbours would give me food.

“I sold some items by a street corner, but due to my unkempt appearance, people were unwilling to patronise me. It was the neighbours that contributed money to pay for my transportation back to Delta State.”

Bedridden by sickness

Sunday PUNCH learnt that due to the widened divide between Mrs Kanebi and her in-laws, she had no choice but to relocate to her parents’ village.

She, however, revealed that she lived at the mercy of the villagers and had yet to get any medical treatment since she returned.

Kanebi recounted, “I became very sick and was bedridden for a while. I started suffering from a recurring eye problem and could only see faintly.

“You can see how thin I am and how my body looks. If you knew me before, you would not believe that I can look this way. My skin was like glass.”

Continuing, Kanebi said, “I was told that I lacked blood and should eat more fruits and vegetables. If I was told that this is what would become of my life, I would have doubted it.

“Nobody cares or asks after my wellbeing. It is only a lady that uses a wheelchair that feeds me. She was the one who helped to build the place I am staying currently.

“God will repay my children in their own coin. I did nothing to them. I took good care of them and ensured that they did not lack anything. They are ungrateful children. If my husband were to be alive, I would not go through this.

“I enrolled the two boys at Atunrase Senior High School and Ijeshatedo Boys’ Secondary School in Lagos. The only girl I had schooled at St. Maria Goretti Girls’ Grammar School, Benin City, Edo State. They were all good schools.”

An emotional Kanebi claimed that her children were aware that she lived like a destitute in an unhealthy environment but chose to turn blind eyes to her plight.

“My children know that I am here. They are enjoying themselves in Lagos. The female among them is married to a pastor and the man is supporting her to maltreat me,” she added.

Esther Kanebi lied, say in-laws

Based on Mrs Kanebi’s account, Sunday PUNCH became privy to an emergency family meeting summoned by her in-laws and which was also attended by Chinelo, the lady that drew attention to her plight.

Events that unfolded and details that later emerged revealed that the widow’s predicament was borne out of deep-seethed anger and resentment towards certain laws (customs) and tradition of the land.

Kanebi’s in-laws accused her of abandoning her husband, John, when he was critically ill, and that she did not attend his burial.

They also claimed that she never mourned or performed some important burial rites in her husband’s honour.

They described her claim of abandonment as false and maintained that she should have told the truth, rather than brand them as people without an iota of conscience.

According to one of the elders at the meeting, Anthony Kanebi, the embattled Mrs Kanebi grievously offended her late husband and children.

He recounted, “All the allegations she levelled against us are false. She abandoned her children when they were tender for her mother-in-law and fled to Lagos to join her husband. She ran away on the pretext that she was going to fetch water.

“When her husband returned homesick, she abandoned him and he later died. She did not come home for his burial and does not even know his final resting place.

“She said her children refused to take care of her. I carried out discreet investigations and called other family members, only to learn that she threw her children out when they went to Lagos to look for her. The oldest was 13 years then. The young man is now in his 40s.

“Did you (Esther) bring them up as a mother was expected to? Where were you when your husband died? Did you mourn him and which person’s house did you stay during the period? Can you show us where he was buried? Who shaved your hair to signify that you had completed the mourning period? Going by tradition, it is only women within the family who are empowered to cut her hair, but she was nowhere to be found.”

“Going by our tradition, since she did not mourn her husband, nobody could have married her within the family. So, the claim that she was asked to marry a member of the family, Ifeanyi, is false. He was married with two children at the time. We were young then, but we asked questions.”

Mrs Kanebi maltreated her mother-in-law

Corroborating Anthony’s claims, another member of the Kanebi family, Edith, said their late aunt, Theresa Monye, was the eldest female member of the family empowered by tradition to shave Esther’s hair.

Edith stated, “She did not come home to bury her husband. If she did, she should tell us where she stayed.

“Esther’s husband was my uncle. My mother was the first daughter of the family, while her late husband was the first son. After my uncle married her, he left for Lagos, with a plan to pick her and the children later. Esther never lit firewood to cook for her mother-in-law, who provided everything for her throughout the period.

“She never mourned her husband. Our anger is that she did not take care of her children. She lied about everything. She tarnished our image and the good name of the Kanebi family.”

My mother abandoned us as toddlers – Son

Mrs Kanebi’s second son, Peter, who represented his siblings, accused their mother of abandoning them with their grandmother when they were toddlers.

He alleged that at the time she left, the youngest child was eight-month-old, while the two older twins were two.

He recounted, “We were nurtured by my grandmother. She breastfed me after my mother left. When I was 13 years old, I asked after my mother and was told that she left us and ran to Lagos to be with my father.

“My mother left the house under the pretext of going to fetch water and ran away. My grandmother brought me and my siblings up with produce from her farm.

“I met my mother for the first time when I was 13 years old. She could not recognise her first son, Joe, when she met him for the first time in December 2020.

“My grievance with my mother is that she abandoned us. She did not take care of us. She also accommodated and spent her money on another man known as Odunjo. She later had a daughter for him.

“When my sibling and I located her place in Lagos, through the help of an uncle, she told her lover that she was never married and did not have any child. It is unfortunate that my grandmother is not alive to witness today. My mother wronged us.”

Peter claimed that Mrs Kanebi got him arrested and remanded in the Ogwashi Uku Prison for a crime he did not commit, and that life had been difficult for him since then.

He added, “I worked as a cart pusher (porter) to survive in Lagos. Every day, my mother would be all dressed up and passed by me at the bus stop. She never acknowledged me as her son.

“When I turned 20, she came with her lover and a policeman to arrest me. It was not until we got to Delta State that I knew what my offence was. I was accused of breaking into my maternal grandmother’s house to steal. I was in prison for one year and my mother never showed up.

“My mother did not enrol us in school. If I had attended secondary school, I would not end up like this. Before I got a job as a driver in a company, I had worked as a conductor and bus driver.”

Not welcomed

At the end of the meeting, even though Mrs Kanebi apologised and asked for forgiveness from her children and in-laws, no one agreed to accommodate her or take responsibility for her upkeep.

Following the outright rejection of the elderly woman, Chinelo, the young lady who promised to help Mrs Kanebi, got a family to accommodate her temporarily and also provided money for her basic needs.

Chinelo told Sunday PUNCH that she was putting up a self-contained apartment at the spot where the bamboo hut once stood.

She stated, “It is a challenge I have taken up to do. No matter what her offence is, Mrs Kanebi deserves to live and die with dignity. The apartment will be fitted with a kitchen and toilet.

“She will also get a caregiver because she is almost incapacitated. I know I can’t do this alone. When I need help, I know Nigerians will join to give her a good life. Mrs Kanebi also needs comprehensive medical treatment.”

Why I can’t take care of her – Son

When Sunday PUNCH reached out to Peter to know why he refused to take care of his mother after she begged for forgiveness, he explained that he was not financially stable at the moment.

He stated, “I have plans to take care of my mother. I have discussed with my wife and we may bring her to Lagos.

“However, things are quite difficult for me now. I live in a room with my elder brother, wife and four children. I have forgiven her, but I cannot accommodate her for now. I am struggling to survive.”

Unpleasant development

Before this report was filed, our correspondent reliably gathered that Mrs Kanebi’s stepbrother ordered that construction should be stopped at the site. It was learnt that he allegedly demanded to be paid N600,000 for the spot where the house was being built.

Ministry promises to investigate

The Delta State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development said it was not aware of Mrs Kanebi’s case.

Speaking exclusively to Sunday PUNCH, the Special Assistant to the Commissioner, Lucky Futughe, said Mrs Kanebi’s case should be formally reported to the ministry’s area office at the local government headquarters.

“Let a formal report be made and we will look into it. We have our offices in all the local government areas. Processes will have to be followed and investigations carried out by our field officers. If it is women affairs or social welfare, the ministry will look into it. Cases are treated based on merit and availability of funds,” he added.

Practices that subjugate widows should be abolished’

According to the 2015 World Widows’ Report by the Loomba Foundation, there are 258 million widows across the world, of which 3.5 million are in Nigeria.

In May 2015, the Federal Government signed into law the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act to protect people against various forms of violence, including harmful widowhood practices.

According to human rights experts, it was the first time federal law expressly granted widows protection from abuse, but the enforcement remains weak.

The Founder, Christian Widows Widowers Initiative Nigeria, a Lagos-based NGO that supports widows and their vulnerable children, Beatrice Yesufu, said the case of Mrs Kanebi was peculiar but not rare. She said empathy was what should come to play in her case and appealed to her children and in-laws to forgive and take her back.

She, however, noted that cultural demands on widows could be quite traumatic and called for practices that subjugate widows to be abolished.

Yesufu said widows should be treated with dignity and given the psychological, moral and financial support they needed to live a normal life again.

She called on widows to respect traditions, especially those that would not infringe on their rights.

“Widowhood is not a status, but a phase of life. I do not teach widows to be arrogant or violate culture as long as it does not violate their rights. Shaving of hair is meant to honour the dead. A woman is expected to mourn her husband as a sign of respect,” she added.

James Ogunnaike, ABEOKUTA

A 35 years old housewife, Blessing Ebuneku Agoro has been arrested by men of the Ogun State Police command for selling her two biological daughters; Semilore Agoro 4 years and Deborah Agoro 2 years.

The suspect, according to a statement by the command spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, was arrested following a report lodged at Redeemed Camp divisional headquarters by husband of the suspect, Oluwaseyi Agoro.

Oyeyemi said, Oluseyi reported that, he travelled for sometime and when he returned on the 8th of June 2021, he couldn’t find his two daughters.

He added that since all efforts to make his wife tell him the whereabout of the children proved abortive, he therefore found it necessary to report at police station.

Oyeyemi added, “upon the report, the DPO Redeemed Camp division, CSP Alabi Akinjide detailed his detectives to apprehend the suspect, who had already been with the camp’s code of conduct department”.

“On interrogation, the suspect explained to the police that, her husband left home for the past two years, and while he was away, she found it difficult to cater for the two children with her other two children she had for another man”.

“She stated further that while she was contemplating on what to do, one Kolawole Imoleayo introduced her to a couple in Port Harcourt who are in dare need of children, and she sold the two daughters to the couple at the rate of three hundred thousand naira (#300,000)”.

“Her confession led to the arrest of the said intermediary, Kolawole Imoleayo. They are both assisting the police in their investigation”, Oyeyemi said.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun has ordered the transfer of the suspects to the anti-human trafficking and child labour unit of the state criminal investigation and intelligence department for discreet investigation.

He equally directed that the children must be rescued and brought back to their parents as soon as possible.

HealthSeven Infections You Can Contract From A Barber’s by highbee02(op): 2:05pm On Jun 05, 2021
No doubt, one of the most visited places ever by men, as well as some women, is a barber’s. Depending on the type of hairstyle people keep, some visit a barber’s monthly, some weekly, some twice a week and some daily to have a haircut.

Although a barber’s is supposed to be a safe place to cut and treat your hair, it could also be a nasty, secret germ factory. You may go there germ-free and return with an infection or infections.

Perhaps, in the past, the only disease some people thought they could contract from a barber’s is the Human Immunodeficiency Virus through an infected clipper, but there are other potential infections one can get from a barber’s.

Some experts say that ideally, if you visit a barber’s and you discover that your barber or a customer they are attending to has a skin infection, then you should stay away from that barber’s and go to another to have your haircut. (Note that skin infections are easily noticeable. They are usually red, hot and swollen.)

Apart from a barber having a skin infection, experts also advise to stay away from a barber or a customer with a respiratory disease such as cough and sneezes. But if you don’t mind spending some money to treat yourself in case you catch an infection, you may decide to stay.

Meanwhile, the same rule applies to you. If you have a skin infection or flu, be empathetic to others and don’t visit a barber’s until you treat yourself. When you do this, you may be helping other people’s husbands, wives, children, or friends from contracting an infection.

Better still, if you can afford a home service with your own clipper and other instruments, don’t hesitate to do so.

In normal circumstances, preventing infection and minimising the risk of an injury at a barber’s should be part of every barber’s training.

But since this may not usually be the case, being a customer, you have to make inquiries whether your barber is fully licensed and has a good reputation.

If you feel uncomfortable choosing a barber, don’t be afraid to ask questions like: how long have they been cutting hair? Where did they learn the vocation? What are their procedures to prevent infection?

After all is said and done, the following are seven infections you can contract from a barber’s.

Barber’s itch

One of the infections one can get from a barber is the barber’s itch. It is a form of folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicles) that develops in the beard area or scalp after you are infected by an unsterilised instrument.

According to a dermatologist at the Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, United States, Dr Joshua Zeichner, a barber’s itch occurs when the bacteria invade the hair follicles, leading to red bumps and pus pimples that may be itchy.

“If you have ever seen your barber dip their comb or a razor in a liquid solution, that is a good sign that they are properly sterilising their tools. If they don’t, you can get the barber’s itch,” Zeichner told menshealth.com.

The dermatologist added that in mild cases, a barber’s itch could be treated effectively with a topical antibiotic, while in more severe cases, it might require oral antibiotic treatment.

Impetigo

Zeichner described impetigo as a bacterial infection that is caused mainly by staphylococcus or streptococcus bacteria.

He said, “While it is more common among younger children, you can get it at pretty much any age, and it is most commonly spread via skin-to-skin contact, clothing, or towels (something to keep in mind if you’re getting your hair washed at a barber’s).

“Patients develop yellow or honey-coloured crusts (on their skin). It is important to treat because it is highly contagious. Fortunately, it is usually easily treatable with a topical antibiotic ointment.”

Tinea capitis

According to Zeichner, tinea capitis is a fungal infection of the scalp that can take the shape of a ringworm (red patch with scale around the perimeter) or it can look like a red flakey itchy patch.

He said, “At the barber’s, tinea capitis can spread via poorly sanitised combs or towels and in severe cases, it can lead to permanent scarring and hair loss.

“Tinea capitis often needs to be treated with an oral antifungal medication. The fungus penetrates deep into the hair follicles, so it may be difficult to treat with topical medications alone.”

Folliculitis

According to a Lagos-based dermatologist, Mrs Chioma Okere, folliculitis is the inflammation of the hair follicle, mostly caused by bacterial infection.

“Folliculitis looks like a tiny white pimple and it is usually caused by staphylococcus bacteria, which can be transmitted through improperly sanitised combs, scissos, or razors,” she said.

Okere said like the barber’s itch, folliculitis could also cause itch.

Lice

Okere told Saturday PUNCH that while it was rare to get lice from a regular wash and cut, the possibility of contracting it still remains, adding that it was possible to be infected with lice from a comb used by someone who had the infection.

She said, “It is common in the scalp, but it also can occur in the beard. The most common symptom is significant itching in the affected area. In addition to the adult louse, it is common to find nits, which are eggs, in the hair as well.

“There are a variety of ways to treat lice, the most common of which is to apply a topical anti-lice medication to the hair to kill the infection. You also may need to have individual nits removed from the hair as well.”

Tetanus

You might have probably been thinking that the only way one can contract tetanus is when you step on a rusty nail. But the same can happen if your hair is cut with rusted barber tools.

“Many people often think one can get tetanus only from bacteria in the soil, but it can also be acquired from unclean rusted instruments,” he said.

Herpes

If you’re getting wax while having manscaping (the trimming or removal of hair from a man’s face or body), this may be something to be wary of.

Zeichner said there had been incidents of transmission of herpes or bacterial infections through waxing. He cautioned against using a waxer that had been used on someone else.

Tips on staying safe from infections

The good news is that most of the infections above can be treated, although it is better to prevent them from occurring in the first place.

Be that as it may, below are some tips on staying safe while at a barber’s:

Tell your barber to sanitise their tools

Did you know the name of the blue liquid that some barbers dip combs in? It is called barbicide and it is essential for disinfecting tools. It is a disinfectant solution used by barbers and cosmetologists for sanitising grooming tools such as combs and hair-cutting shears.

According to Zeichner, the active ingredient in barbicide is called alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, which is an effective element for killing bacteria, fungi and viruses.

He advised ensuring that all the instruments at a barber’s are dipped into the solution before being used on one.

He said, “Some salons, spas, and barber’s may also have autoclaves or machines that sterilise instruments using high-pressure steam.

“Don’t be shy about asking if the straight blades are autoclaved or if they use an individual new blade each time – especially if you’re getting a shave.”

Check your skin before visiting a barber’s

Zeichner advised that before going to a barber’s for a haircut, always ensure that you check your skin. If you have open cuts or wounds on your skin, cancel your appointment. The issue is you are at risk of developing an infection if the barber uses an infected tool on those particular spots on your skin.

Check your barber’s skin

Apparently, it is not only you who should not have open cuts or wounds when visiting the barber’s. Your barber is also not allowed to work on you if they have open cuts or wounds.

Zeichner said, “If your barber too has any open cuts or wounds on their skin, especially their hands, they could spread infections to you.”

Take notice of how well the shop is kept

This may go without saying, but if the barber looks dirty, it probably is and there is no crime in telling a barber why you cannot patronise them.

Zeichner said, “Unclean areas, hair clippings, rusty instruments, visible blood stains and stained towels are all red flags.”

A Lagos-based dermatologist, Mrs Bose Ojo, also warned against getting too familiar with a particular barber, especially if they are not paying attention to cleanliness.

She said, “Sometimes, some people do not want to offend a barber who they have been used to, even when they see all the red flags. It should not be so. I think your safety should be of utmost concern.

“If you want to help your barber, tell them they need to pay attention to cleanliness and get newer instruments if the ones they are using are old and rusty.”

Visit barber’s with large spaces

The Infectious Disease Epidemiology Section of the Office of Public Health, Louisiana, US, recommended visiting a barber’s where there are large spaces between separating chairs.

The organisation said in an article titled, ‘Infection control at barbershops,’ that large spaces could help prevent the spread of infections quickly.

It stated, “Particularly to prevent droplet transmission, it is useful to have workstations well spaced out. Large droplets travel no further than three feet. Separating chairs would help reduce the transmission from one customer to another.”

Also advising barbers, the organisation stated, “When using hairdryers, avoid pointing the flow of hair towards you or another customer to avoid the spread of airborne infections.”

CrimeBusinessman Kicks As Guard Arrested For Murder Dies In Ogun Police Custody Deji by highbee02(op): 9:56pm On Jun 01, 2021
1 June 2021

A businessman, Oluwaseun Adegoke, has lamented the death of one of his security guards, Shola Adeleke, in the custody of the Ogun State Police Command.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Adeleke and four other guards – Olaitan Oluwaseun, Jimoh Ibrahim, Wasiu Adeshina and Hakeem Elegbede – were arrested after the corpse of a yet-to-be-identified man was found a few metres to Adegoke’s farm at Ipaya in the Yewa North Local Government Area of the state.

Upon the discovery, Adegoke said the Divisional Police Officer, Ayetoro Division, one Mr Olusesi, after telling him on the phone that the corpse was not found on his farm, requested his workers to come to the station for questioning.

The businessman said, “As a law-abiding Nigerian with massive investments in the area, I immediately summoned my farm manager and security team to report and help with the police investigation.

“At the station, my farm manager gave a statement, but our security men were detained and asked to make statements and the Investigating Police Officer, Ahmed Abdullahi, asked the farm manager to leave the questioning room.

“Abdullahi was questioning my men and also writing the statement for them; he wrote that they said we gave them guns to secure the farm against sticks, which they told him. This was a red flag and I immediately asked my lawyers to come in.

“To my surprise, the police sensing that they had no case as all the complainants they paraded couldn’t identify any of my security men as the supposed attackers, transferred the case to the state Homicide Department, Eleweeran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.”

The case, however, took another dimension when the businessman said Adeleke died in police custody, adding that despite the ongoing investigation, the police claimed that the corpse found a few metres from his farm had been buried.

He said, “On arrival at the Homicide Department, my men were about to be released when the IPO insisted that they must not be granted bail but must be tortured to confess to an offence they knew nothing about.

“On May 28, 2021, I received a distress call that one of our security men, Shola Adeleke, had died in police custody in circumstances the police couldn’t explain.

“Upon his death, the police hurriedly released three members of our security team. One of my guards is still in their custody and I don’t know his current state.

“My question is, if truly there was ever a murder, why would the police release three of the suspects on the same day that one of them died? It is obvious that the police feel guilty.

“We have asked the police to produce the corpse found around the farm and till date, nothing has been produced as they claimed that it had been buried. How do you bury the evidence in a murder case and claim to be investigating the matter?

“The thing that escalated the matter was the fact that somebody died under my watch. I have been trying to hold on; we shall use every legal means available to us to fight this injustice. Shola Adeleke will not die in vain.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said, “It is a case of murder. The suspects were arrested in Ayetoro over the killing of a particular person. About eight persons kidnapped the victim and after some days, the corpse of the person was found.

“The suspects were transferred to the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department on Wednesday, and while they were screening them, there were allegations and counter allegations. Some eyewitnesses identified the deceased person and three others to be involved in the kidnap of the man whose corpse was discovered.

“They were detained and in the course of investigation, the man (Adeleke) became ill and he was taken to hospital, where he gave up. Three among the arrested suspects, who were not directly involved in the death of the kidnapped man, were released, because they were not on duty on the day of the incident.

“But another person, who was identified together with the deceased person as being directly involved in the death of that man, is still being detained. He has mentioned another five persons, who we are going to apprehend.”

In 2007, I went for the DSS interview @ Ojoo Cantonment in Lagos State. Those who have been interviewed before me came out and tell us it's compulsory to wear suit, I borrowed one from one of the applicants who is tall and fat, as I was about to enter, the officers at the entrance stopped and asked me in pidgin English "this boy, u go borrow suit?" This was because it's an oversized suit.

PoliticsFinal farewell: Army, family disagreement slightly delays COAS burial by highbee02(op): 11:40am On May 23, 2021
Late officers’ wife, sister slump at funeral

There was a slight disagreement on Saturday between the family of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru, and the Nigerian Army over the COAS’ burial.

The disagreement led to a short delay of the COAS’ interment as his family insisted that he must be buried without a coffin in accordance with Islamic injunctions

But some senior army officers argued that Attahiru’s remains would be buried according to military traditions.

After some time, the family was convinced by the superior arguments and the grave was widened to accommodate the coffin.

Attahiru and 10 other military officers were involved in a crash on Friday at the Kaduna International Airport.

It was reported that the aircraft conveying the military officers, with registration number 5N-R203, was billed to land at the Nigerian Airforce Base in the Mando area of Kaduna but diverted to land at the civil airport due to inclement weather.

Apart from Attahiru, other victims were Brigadier Generals Ahmed Kuliya, O Olayinka, and MI Abdulkadir; Majors N Hamza, LA Hayat; Sergeants O Adesina, and Umar; as well as Aircraftman OM Oyedepo, Flt Lt TO Asaniyi, and Flt Lt AA Olufade.

Deceased’s wife, sister collapsed amid untimely farewell

It was a sombre moment as the remains of the COAS, Attahiru, and 10 others were interred at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja on Saturday, in full military honours 24 hours after the incident.

Military officers in ceremonial dress with black band tied around their arms trooped into the cemetery to pay their last respects.

The burial ceremony was overseen by the Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army, led by its Commander, Brig Gen Takuti Usman.

It commenced with the arrival of senior retired and serving officers and other government officials, including a former COAS, Lt Gen Azubuike Ihejirika; Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor; Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed.

Others present at the cemetery were the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai; the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan; acting Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; Chief of Staff to the President, Prof Ibrahim Gambari; members of the diplomatic corps, and others.

Meanwhile, as the ceremony was underway, a sister of one of the deceased officers collapsed around 4.12pm and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance with registration number, NDC160.

The wife of one of the late officers who also fainted was revived and whisked away in a sport-utility vehicle.

The remains of the Beachcraft 350 aircraft occupants were buried at the National Military Cemetery located on the Shehu Yar’Adua Road (also called Airport Road), in the Federal Capital Territory.

The deceased officers’ final journey on Saturday started from Kaduna, where the crash occurred.

Their corpses were airlifted and received at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at about 11am by senior military officers.

The remains were thereafter conveyed in ambulances amidst tight security to where funeral services were held for them.

The corpses of victims who were Muslims were driven to the National Mosque, Abuja, where Salāt al-Janāzah prayer was held in their honour, while the bodies of the Christian victims were taken to the Nigerian Air Force Protestant Church located inside the Air Force Base for their funeral service.

Lawan, Sultan, others bid Attahiru, others farewell

Hundreds of family members, friends and sympathisers, as well as serving and retired military officers stormed the National Mosque, where prayers were said for the repose of the souls of Attahiru and five other officers who were Muslims.

Among those present at the ceremony were the Yobe State Governor and Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of the All Progressives Congress, Mai Mala Buni; Borno State Governor, Prof Babagana Zulum; and former governors Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Adamu Aliero (Kebbi) and Kabiru Gaya (Kano).

Others included the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami; Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen; and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar.

The event, which was initially scheduled to start at 10am, was delayed till 12.30pm.

The bodies of the deceased officers, e conveyed in six ambulances, arrived at the mosque at 12.25pm.

The Janazah prayer, however, did not hold until 1.45pm after the Muslims said the regular 1pm prayer in the mosque.

While the people waited, family members were allowed to see the bodies of the slain officers in the vehicles.

Some of them were seen wailing while others said prayers.

The Janazah prayer was led by one of the four imams of the National Mosque, Sheikh Ahmad Onilewura.

The six bodies, which were in caskets draped in the national flag, were laid on the floor as the prayers were said. The prayer took place at the southern side of the mosque.

After the prayer that lasted less than 10 minutes, the caskets were taken back into the ambulances, and driven out of the premises shortly after.

Speaking to journalists after the prayers, Lawan said, “I really feel so sober, that this is how life is. The Chief of Army Staff particularly was someone who was attending a function that could have taken place today (Saturday). Now, this is what has happened to him and his colleagues. Anyone of us could die at any time. So, we should always prepare for that kind of a day. May Almighty Allah grant them Aljannah Firdaus.”

Onilewura, who also spoke to journalists, described death as a leveller, warning Nigerians, especially the elite, to be godly in their dealings as no one could escape death.

Family members weep at church

At the NAF Protestant Church, the mood was initially pensive as bereaved family members arrived.

The palpable silence on the premises, however, changed when the siren of the ambulances conveying the remains of Brigadier General Olayinka of the Nigerian Army; and Flt Lt Olufade, Flt Lt Asaniyi, Sgt Adesina and Aircraftman Oyedepo of the Air Force rented the air.

Sympathisers had a hectic time consoling the grieving family members as the caskets, draped in national colours, were being moved one after the other into the church hall.

At the service, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Isiaka Amao, admonished friends, families and colleagues of the deceased officers not to allow the sacrifices of the deceased to be in vain.

Amao said, “As members of the Armed Forces and citizens of this great nation, we must be consoled that the legacy they left behind is the ultimate sacrifice they have paid in service of our motherland.

“We must, therefore, continue to remember them and not let their sacrifices be in vain. I appeal to you, however, to take solace in God, who is the greatest comforter.”

Amao also encouraged members of the Armed Forces who were present to emulate the selflessness, courage and commitment shown by the deceased military men.

Also, the Director of the Chaplaincy, Group Capt Dogo Gani, asked the bereaved to put their confidence in God who knew best and would comfort them in their down moments.

Special prayers were offered for the deceased’s families while the victims’ remains were thereafter driven to the National Military Cemetery for burial.

Buhari absent at burial site

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was conspicuously absent both at the National Mosque and the National Military Cemetery where dignitaries paid their last respects to the Chief of Army Staff and others.

According to the programme of events at the cemetery, Buhari was assigned to deliver special remarks as the Commander-in-Chief.

But he was, however, represented at the event by the Minister of Defence, Maj. Gen. Bashir Magashi (retd.).

The President returned to the country on Thursday after a four-day official visit to France.

Magashi had on Friday evening led a delegation of top government officials to the Presidential Villa, Abuja to formally inform Buhari of the crash.

In his remarks on Saturday, Magashi, speaking on Buhari’s behalf, urged members of the armed forces and all Nigerians to uphold the virtues the late COAS and the other deceased officers.

He said, “The late Attahiru was an icon of professionalism, bravery and discipline. And he aptly demonstrated these attributes through his national and international military assignments which culminated is being the Chief of Army Staff.

“The late COAS inspired courage and confidence in the Nigerian Army, which informed the successes recorded under his watch.”

At the burial, the Chief of Defence Staff, Lucky Irabor, assured Nigerians that Attahiru’s death had not halted the war against insecurity in the country.

He said, “The sting of death, you have not stopped the fight against all forms of insecurity.

“To my fellow Nigerians, the challenges are for a moment. The armed forces of Nigeria remain undaunted. We are unmovable; the war against insecurity must be won, truly must be won.”

Army flag flies at half-mast at headquarters

Meanwhile, gloom enveloped parts of the FCT from early morning on Saturday.

The flag of the Nigerian Army was seen flying at half-mast at its headquarters within the Armed Forces Complex in Garki, Abuja at about 10.30am when one of our correspondents visited.

Osinbajo mourns

The Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Saturday joined other Nigerians to mourn the late COAS and others.

His condolence message was contained in a statement made available to journalists by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, titled ‘Death in service of Army Chief, Attahiru, others reflect depth of sacrifice.’’

EducationNo plan to Scrap education programmes in universities says Okebukola by highbee02(op): 10:23pm On May 20, 2021
ABUJA- CHAIRMAN, Universities Education Curriculum Review Committee, Prof. Peter Okebukola, Thursday, said there was no plan to scrap any education programme being run in Nigerian universities as wrongly being speculated in some quarters.

He described the rumour as not only fake news but also wishful thinking of some mischief-makers.

The former Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission, NUC, and the Chairman, Governing Council of the National Open University of Nigerian, NOUN stated this in a statement.

Prof Okebukola was reacting to claims by some members of the Nigerian Academy of Education that “there is a universities education curriculum review committee currently sitting which is headed by Prof Peter Okebukola, which is proposing the scrapping of some university undergraduate programmes like Educational Administration &Planning (or Educational Management); Guidance and Counseling and Early Childhood Education/Primary Education, despite the merits of the programmes”.

While describing the information being circulated in some quarters as fake news, the former NUC boss refuted the claims and insisted that there was no attempt to scrap education programmes offered in some Universities in the country.

Prof Okebukola declared that rather than scrapping, all the current programmes in Education were being maintained and strengthened.

Accordingly, he urged members of the public to ignore the unsubstantiated rumours. Since studies have consistently shown that Education graduates who have no teaching subject reflected in their certificates have had challenges with employment and even placement for teaching practice, the Education Curriculum Group after consultations with stakeholders including members of the Nigerian Academic of Education, have agreed to recommend to NUC, that as much as possible and where applicable, Education programmes should have a component of a teaching subject.

The statement reads in part: “It is fake news! No programme is being scrapped in Education. All current programmes in Education are being maintained and strengthened.

“Instead, new programmes are being proposed for Education to respond to the needs of our great country for teachers who are nationally relevant and globally competitive. The purveyors of the fake news are not aware of these developments and instead of cross-checking the facts, they went about misleading the public in a most disingenuous way”.

“Nigerians should await the outcome of the exercise and they will see how far from the truth these mischievous people are. To make Nigeria’s teachers the best is a task that must be done collectively.”

Alleged killer of Iniubong Umoren paraded, says he’s prepared to die
ON MAY 14, 20217:38 PMIN NEWS
By Chioma Onuegbu, Uyo

THE alleged murderer of late 26-year-old Miss Iniubong Umoren, graduate of the Philosophy University of Uyo, (UNIUYO) Uduak Frank Akpan has said he was prepared to die if that would be the only acceptable justice for the heinous crime.

Akpan who spoke on Friday when paraded at the Police Headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo, though admitted to having lured and raped more than six girls through advertising for phoney job vacancies, purely as revenge for how girls had been duping him but denied killing any other girl apart from Iniubong Umoren.

The 20-year-old and 200 level student of Public Administration, Obong University, Obong Ntak, Akwa Ibom State, who was paraded alongside his father, Mr Frank Akpan, admitted to killing Umoren when she came for the fake job interview and he demanded sex to which she agreed but insisted on using a condom.

His words, “What happened was that she came for the supposed job interview. I decided to used reverse psychology on her. I told her whether she can work on a farm that hard drugs are kept as a Secretary. She said that she was ready to work. When she came I told her this farm doesn’t exist that it was just a hoax.

“ I told her that before we could even start I would like to have sex with her and she agreed but she gave a condition that I should use a condom which I agreed. While I removed the condom she became furious and picked the nearby stabilizer to hit me on my head.

” She bit my left finger and tried to reach for the door screaming. While I was bleeding, in a bid to stop her, I used the stabiliser also and hit her. And when I hit her she fell and after she died,”

Continuing, the suspect added his father was not around and never assisted him in any way to either kill or bury the remains of the deceased.

Asked about his motive for inviting the lady to his family house when there was no job, the suspect responded; “Initially, I used reverse psychology on her. I have had very bad experiences with runs girls and prostitutes. I asked whether she can work on a farm that hard drugs are kept and she accepted.

“She even told me she took marijuana and cocaine. I felt that that was the best way to revenge for the runs girls and prostitutes. I used to patronize prostitutes but now I don’t.

“I am not happy about what has happened. But the commissioner of police has assured Akwa Ibomites and the entire world that justice will take its course. If the justice promised by the police on the matter will mean my life being taken, I am prepared to die”

On his part, the father, Frank Akpan, a retired director in the federal ministry of lands, denied knowledge of the crime until he was invited by the police, even as he admitted that the house in which the murder was effected was his own.

On the confession of his son admitted that he has taken advantage of six girls in the compound, the father responded; “I’m not aware of that. The reason is that we just relocated from Abuja. I have not been around for 30 years. We just relocated because I have been retired. It is not even up to two years since we came back.”

He denied ever being in the business of selling human parts as alleged.

Asked to comment on the kind of justice he expects in the case, Mr Akpan stuttered and said “I’m not happy about what my child had done. I don’t even believe this can happen to me after I had sent them to school, tried to bring them up. Yes, justice can be done if the system so permits.”

The state commissioner of police, Mr Andrew Amiegheme said he decided to parade the suspect to puncture the rumour that he had committed suicide while in a police cell.

He gave the assurance that the police would do their utmost to ensure that justice is not only done but seen to have been done, stressing that the police cannot cover up any crime in the state irrespective of who is involved.

Crime"My boyfriend lured me to sell my only child for 300k" by highbee02(op): 9:39pm On Apr 23, 2021
A 31-year-old lady, Titilayo Kudaisi and her boyfriend, Oluseyi Akinsete, have been arrested for stealing and selling children.

They were arrested in Ondo State after stealing a six-month- old baby at Odo-Ota Sawmill area in Ilorin, Kwara State.

Kudaisi said they stole the child after the parents left the house while the boyfriend stood guard.

She confessed the two children they stole earlier were sold in Imo State for N500, 000 and N300, 000.

Kudaisi admitted she also sold her baby shortly after she was introduced to the business by her boyfriend.

“We went to steal the child from his parents’ house in Ilorin, Kwara State.

“It’s my boyfriend who’s aware of the movement of the boy’s mother. After surveying the environment, we now moved in to steal the toddler.

“I met my boyfriend who lured me into the business in Lagos where I was living. He invited me to Ilorin, and I went to meet him with my only child who is three-years-old. Though, the father of my child is late.

“After arriving Ilorin, he convinced me that we should sell my baby, a boy which I disagreed with. But after much persuasion, I agree that we should sell the baby after he told me that he will help get my baby back.

“We later sold my child to someone in Imo State for N300, 000 but I could not get my child back despite his assurance.

“It’s after we sold my child that we went to steal the baby at Ilorin. After stealing the baby, we travelled down to Ondo town in Ondo State and I advised him that we should return the baby because I was scared of the entire scenario.”

But the boyfriend said he started the child selling business in 2019 through his friend he identified as John Emeka.

Oluseyi, who claimed to have fathered three children, said he has not sold any of his children.

He said his friend helped him to sell a female child for N500,000

“In total, I’ve been able to steal three babies since I started the business. We used to sell them to our buyers in Imo State.

“The guy that used to buy the babies from us told us that he works with an orphanage home.”

Ondo Police Commissioner, Bolaji Salami, said the suspects would soon be charged to court
