Similarities between Steve Jobs of Apple Inc And Oyedepo of Winners Chapel.

You may wonder why I chose to make this sort of comparison and what inspired me to do so. Well let me start from the beginning. In 2011 I had decided to apply to both Oral Robert University and Western Kentucky University both in USA. I got a $10,000 scholarship from WKU and I was so excited with the prospect of studying in the USA. Well long story short, I went to church one day and heard clearly from the Holy Spirit that I was going to Covenant university. Well I wasn't really pleased but i went to Covenant after all. And what can I say, it was a very intense experience. But today I'm very glad I went there.

While in Covenant I was very attentive to Bishop Oyedepo and I learnt a lot from him. One of those things was really very much about how to build a successful business. Isn't it ironic? Again, to keep this article very brief, when Oyedepo preaches about business success, he hinges on three things The Spiritual Cost, The Intellectual Cost and The Physical Cost. These three things are the corner stone of Oyedepo's success as an individual. Oyedepo had taught us how he took time to study nine leading Universities in the world before establishing Covenant. He had also taken time to study Catholism. BDO believed the catholic church had a very successful church through the ages and took some ideas from them when it came to matters of succession. When building Covenant Research Center they took inspiration from University of Wisconsin - Madison. The Landmark campus and road network was inspired by the University of Carlifornia Berkeley. That is who Bishop is, he takes time to do a lot of research before venturing into anything.


Having internalized a whole lot from Bishop Oyedepo it came natural to me to follow the three principles Oyedepo laid out back in school when I wanted to start a company. The Spiritual cost, The Intellectual cost and the Physical Cost. So in fulfilling the Intellectual cost I took out time to identify the 10 leading global corporations I wanted to study. Oh I learnt a whole lot of dangerous stuff but most importantly I felt the need to set the bar of success higher. While many of these companies desperately tried not to reveal the recipe that made their organizations successful I was able to poke into quite a number by listening to former employees and a whole lot of research. Apple Inc was one of my model companies. The more I researched into Steve Jobs of Apple it was like I was understudying David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church.


So here are five similarities I noticed between both

1) Totalitarian Leadership: Both Steve Jobs and Bishop leadership templates can be best described as Dictatorial. At Apple you can be fired for coming six minutes late to work. Steve Jobs was known to sack people in the elevator. Bishop Oyedepo on the other hand oversaw the retrenchment of over 500 workers in the living faith church since inception. Both Oyedepo and Jobs where visionaries and taskmasters. They don't have time to explain what they see they just want you to shut up and execute. Now God helps the one who tells them what they want to do is unrealistic. Also, people who have worked at Apple or even Winners Chapel(Covenant included) would tell you that when this two people get angry it is like a series of thunder. You really would want to be 10,000 meters away from them. Amazingly, if you study them you would realise that this wasn't a product of power. They've both been like this even before prominence or power.

2) They Inspire Deep Brand Loyalty: We already know of how Apple is more like a cult brand. Grown adults queuing at Apple stores after major releases is something I don't understand but I want for my company. The Winners Chapel also inspire a very loyal base that is unprecedented. I once heard of a Living Faith Church member who flies into Nigeria every weekend from Germany just to attend Sunday service. What about those members that board buses from the Island to go wrestle with Ogun state bad roads. Think for a moment how many great churches these church members bypass to reach Ota.

3) They Both Desperately Want(ed) to live Long.
A strong sense of Purpose breeds the desire to live long. Unfortunately, Steve Jobs died after his battle with Cancer. However, he tried many treatments and therapies just to cling to life. Many ignorantly have classified Oyedepo's desire to live long as a product of his desire not to forego luxury, very wrong! But that's a matter for another day. Oyedepo really likes life because he believes there's more he needs to still do on Earth. He has familiarized himself with ministers who have lived long just to "tap" from their grace.

4) Both Are Men Of Focus.
At Apple saying No is as important as saying Yes. Apple has been known to focus at a few products and be masters of it. Therefore many projects and opportunities are rejected at apple so they can focus on what matters. Same with Bishop Oyedepo systems. For instance Covenant University is the fastest growing university in West Africa, yet the least expanding. Covenant university admission quota has remained the same since it was founded in 2002, this is despite having thousands more in applicants. The reason why Covenant has refused to expand is because it hasn't gotten the nod to increase her course offerings. But this has allowed the university lead even older universities on rankings.

5) Both Are Very Unrealistic And Visionary

Steve Jobs was known for being extremely bold in his demands and was known to repeatedly ask questions until he got answers. People avoided direct confrontation with him because they knew he was very convincing and they would be forced to agree on terms they don't like. He forced the engineers working with him to create products that were by any means impossible to produce before apple was there. Whether its the insanely slim Mac-book or the extremely sophisticated iPhone it's jobs Vision and his denial of reality that inspired them.
Bishop Oyedepo is equally a very unrealistic and visionary. He would push whatever needs to be pushed to get whatever needs to get done at his own defined time frame. In 2012 while the Chinese mandated 42 of their Universities to overtake american institutions Oyedepo also mandated his to become one of the top 10 universities by 2022. While many still debate about the feasibility of that vision. Oyedepo has spoken of a new vision. That Covenant must be the best university in the world by 2032. Also he wants the church to become financially worth over trillions. He also wants an underground train system beneath Canaan territory, he got a federal licence to own a private airfield in Ota in 2013 - the airfield would be to "park the jets of church members." He also wants to build a 100,000 homes before 2032 - which would arguably make him the largest private provider of housing.

6) Both Are Very Spiritual

Not dwelling too much on Bishop Oyedepo which is very expected to be spiritual as he is a religious cleric. But Steve Jobs was also very spiritual. After converting to Buddhism he would be seen walking barefoot around his neighborhood.
"I believe life is an intelligent thing, that things aren't random," Jobs said in a 1997 interview with Time, providing a glimpse into his complicated belief system that extends well beyond the Buddhist teachings.

7) Both Don't Earn Salaries But Ride Private Jets
After Steve Jobs was sacked and returned as CEO , he stopped receiving Salaries but got the company to sponsor him a private jet. Bishop Oyedepo also not taking salary had also convinced the Church members of the need to procure a Jet as far back as 1996. Since then Bishop Oyedepo has used about Five jets at different times.

Where did this one see bribe again.

1) When students die, they cover it up, barring the room and shifting the roommates, there are no moments of silence given, no respect to the dead. Bad things happen in Covenant, and they don’t want you to know.


Foolish talk. Is it Covenant that killed the student that it would need to do cover up? The living faith church doctrine does not allow for bad news to be spread. It is a strange way to operate but it is what it is. Even when the past VC died I don't think it was ever announced.


2) "Nobody does drugs for the fun of it, I don’t believe that any human in history has ever said, “Yo, my life is bloody amazing, everything is going right for me and by the way, can you pass the cocaine?”


Another foolish talk from a naive boy. Covenant is not a drug rehabilitation center. How you put a drug addict with other normal students, do you know the risk that poses to the community. I knew of a boy who under the influence of drugs was chasing a worker with cutlass. Immediately the University had to expel him.
So they should let him be so he can go rape someone and you would still come and tell us the school is negligent...


3) But faced against this blatant abuse of fundamental human rights, people respond with, “Well, just go to another school. I mean, is Covenant the only school that is there?

If what you mean by human right abuse refer to CU's standing laws and regulation, yes by all means. Covenant is not the only school in Nigeria. Covenant subscribes to an ultra conservative definition of a University. Though they are not many, there are quite a few - Oral Robert University, USA; Liberty University, USA; King Abdullah University, Saudi; Fahd University, Saudi.
If you willingly enrol in any of the aforementioned universities, please realise you are not going to a conventional university and would not have a conventional experience. To come and complain when you get there amounts to madness. There are like 28,000 secular private and public universities in the world.

The only question I'm willing to answer. Well, the rule isn't applicable to postgraduate students.

obviously. it is stupid comparing covenant with legon . anybody with his headup will not try it. just as it is stupid to compare Ui with covenant. even in the ranking , the institution acknowledge fouray bay college as the best uni in Africa outside south Africa yet it is not mentioned in the table.

This is funny. Stanford is younger than Cornell and even Yale or Princeton. But today it's highly rated. You can't just tell us Legon is better without giving concrete evidence beyond age.

Laudable achievement by Covenant University, more wisdom to the school's management, the alumni association and the current students.

By way of digression, I understand that American University owned by Atiku is one of the most expensive universities in Nigeria right now. Would you know if they were ranked at all. Same thing for the Bells University.

Each criterion carries different weight. Teaching, Research, Citation are 30% each. Internationalisation 7.5% Industry income 2.5%
So you have to have the right score in the right places to matter.

About BBN, I am not that type.
I know what I am telling you as someone who works in a tertiary hospital of a supposed first generation uni.

That's where the problem lies, you can't get the Fruit(product) without the process.
THE conclusions are amongst many things informed by more than 21,000 leading researchers and lecturers who mostly have never visited Africa before. If they place CU top 500 out of 29,000 universities in the World. I'm sure they know what they are seeing something you can't see.

When you spend your life watching BBN and all, you won't know what happens even under your nose. It further amuses me when some of you delve into matters you know little of.

The purpose of University rankings is NEVER to measure research breakthrough. Instead rankings measure contributions to Knowledge. University of California Berkeley has the highest numbers of Patent as at last year, yet it was never ranked within the top 5 universities in the world. Why?

The Wright brothers pioneered Air flight but the foundation in aerodynamics research was laid by Dr. Langley Samuel. The purpose of university assessment is to see the Universities contributing to Knowledge and how that knowledge is used globally, by who and for what reason.

Today, one of Apple's secret research center lays in ETH Zurich, the University can't even disclose the existence of the facility talk more of taking credit for the products that are formulated. Same with Georgia Institute Of Technology which houses much of US defense research.

Industries continue to adopt universities based on the core data that is supplied by Organizations like Times Higher Education. In the case of ETH Zurich, Apple saw indexed research work which shows ETH had huge potential for I think display imaging. Apple then established a facility...


Huawei Telecoms Academy is being considered for Covenant university simply because of the THE data that shows Covenant had a strong showing in Engineering and ICT.

Covenant, now solidly sitting as Africa's best private university, after American University Of Cairo slipped 200 places down the ranking into 800 - 1000 barcket would now go on to challenge the South Africa Trio - University Of Capetown, Witwatersrand University and Stellenbosch University

It is important to note that since University rankings began about 20 years ago, UCT, Wits and Stellenbosch have always remained the top 3. They have never been out ranked before and no Nation except South Africa has ever been top 3.

But by Virtue of Covenant University vision to be one of the top 10 varsities in the world it must attempt to displace the three south African Varsities.

While UI looks to rank among the top 200 universities in the world.

Four Nigerian University have now featured in the Times Higher Education University Rankings. This follows 5 pillars in which the Universities where rigorously measured on; Teaching, Research, Citations, Industry Income and Internationalisation.
