Elzak:The relevance of a university is not in how many poor people's kids it educated. If it were, Ahmadu Bello Uni would be relevant than Stanford. The relevance is in solving the many problems facing humanity. You may not be able to attend John Hopkins University but in many ways John Hopkins has benefited you and many other poor people across the globe. They do this when they create vaccines, innovate new ways to do surgery etc. Have you ever wondered why scholarships are giving to indigent brilliant kids in many ivy leagues and not poor dull kids. It is not because they pity them but that those poor brilliant kids should come and improve the mandate of the universities by contributing to research. As it is here in Nigeria, the public universities have more problems than the society it is supposed to help because govt and the people live under the illusion of free higher education. We have sacrificed the relevance and functionality of universities in the name of access. If the church unis focus on giving access they would also face the problem the public universities are challenged with in greater proportion and would never have the opportunity to make a mark like their counterparts outside the shores of naija. Don't ask a university if it is free, ask if it is relevant. Expensive is a price we should be willing to pay to have functional universities. |
ejibaba:Well, to be sincere I don't think Covenant really did any much media push. The first five private unis(Madonna, Babcock, Igbinedion, Bowen, Covenant) enjoyed pioneer status. People knew them, didnt trust them but enrolled as public universities where on the brink of total collapse brought about by heightened tensions caused by cult groups, industrial actions, student and indigene crisis. Over the years Madonna quickly dwindled and igbinedion continues to decline. Bowen stagnated and failed to use the boom years to her advantage. To make matters worse better private universities began to spring up between 2009 - present. Covenant on the other hand had a wealthier owner who concentrated resources on not so many programmes, created a very unique identity. In 2012 it translated into a research driven university and would continue to attract attenrion and grow exceedingly. Babcock on the other hand is owned by the Adventists who are probably the best church with the capacity to run a university. And this shows that despite having a 20 year loan to repay is till doing well. |

ejibaba:Landmark has better infrastructure than Covenant, excellent road networks, way bigger college buildings, far more serene campus but a very underpopulated campus. The staff - student ratio is 1 - 6 which is better than that of CU. But the problem it has is that it has failed to gain enough popularity and still relies heavily on the church to subsidize her budgets. |
kolaxed98:It ought to have been completed I think but issues came up with the community as I heard they demanded to be giving money for the project to continue.Winners didn't want to give them money as the land was given by the former governor's admin on their request for winners to build a university there. But I was informed all issues had been sorted and the project was on track. The name of the university would be Crown University, located in Tinapa, Calabar with a focus on maritime studies. |
Globally, churches own an estimated 5000 - 6000 universities/colleges globally with enrollment exceeding two million students. |
*LIST OF CHURCH OWNED/AFFILIATED-LICENSED, AWAITING LICENSE AND PROPOSED UNIVERSITIES IN NIGERIA Compiled by Leke Beecroft “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” Matthew 5:14 The Church has consistently played her role as the source of light in the nation. Despite hues and cries about the emergence of private universities, it is an irony that most public universities are presently on strike while church owned ones are functional. Presently some of the best universities in the nation are run by churches. They can only get better. The impact of Christian universities are not readily apparent at the moment; however I make bold to say that in a decade from now, the gap would have been clear and the difference between the church owned and other universities would have been widened in favour of the Church. Universities need adequate funding in order to be maintained and carry out research activities among others. Presently most public universities are grappling with these so much that there are plans to increase public university fees to about N250,000 per student while provision would now be made for student loans to be repaid at 5 per cent interest. This was the very reason church owned universities were criticized from the onset. There are presently a total of 79 approved private universities out of a total 169 universities in Nigeria, 39 of which are church owned/affiliated. A further 15 are in different stages that would lead to approval. We present a comprehensive report of the Church owned universities and their proprietors in Nigeria as at today. 1. But by the time oyedepo's time ends he would in the least have established 12,000 churches, 7,000 schools, 7 universities, provided 100,000 houses across Africa, sent the first satellite out of Nigeria. Chances are he would continue to be relevant in death. You on the other hand might be like someone who never existed 2 months after you die. |

Bishop David Oyedepo led Winners’ Chapel to build 5,000 Churches in 2019 By Leke Beecroft Bishop Oyedepo has announced the establishment of a minimum of 5,000 new churches worldwide in 2019. According to the Bishop, God spoke to him on 2nd May 2015 about a new era of Church growth for the Church of Christ at large and Winners’ Chapel in particular. He stated this morning that Church growth was not an ambition but an act of divine visitation and fulfillment of prophecy. The Church arm of the ministry started on December 11, 1983 in Kaduna at No. E.E. 5 Ramat Close, Ungwan Rimi while on May 24, 1987, Church planting began with the first five new churches planted in North Eastern Nigerian towns and cities namely, Maiduguri, Biu, Mubi, Azare and Bauchi. The Lagos Church which first bore the name ‘Winners’ Chapel’ was soon planted on September 24, 1989 at No. 1A, New Era Road, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos and moved to an abandoned Motel facility on 38, Raji Oba Street, Alimosho, Iyana Ipaja, where the renowned Winners Complex was built. The Church eventually reached out to Africa on January 15, 1995 through the Phase 1 of the African Gospel Invasion Programme (AGIP), planting Churches in 6 African nations namely, Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Congo Kinshasa. Today, the Church is in about 48 African nations. Subsequently, MISSION TO THE WORLD (MTW) a project to plant churches outside Africa started in 2001, with the first branch in London, England. The Living Faith Church continued to expand with one major church in every city where she was present and by December 2009 she had a network of about 700 branches worldwide. That same month, she began aggressive planting of branches all over Nigeria and Africa such that by November 2010, her branches had increased to 2,500 and by November 2011 had planted another 2,000 all over the world. On September 7, 2012 the Church Constitution known as ‘The MANDATE’, was published. This operational manual of the church clearly spelling out doctrines and history of the church as well as administration and succession spelt out that there would be a church located every 2km distance all over the world. Later in December that year, the Church listed over 5,000 branches in Nigeria alone and over 600 in foreign countries, totaling about 6,000. In May 2013, about 60 churches were planted in hinterland Lagos especially for those who might have to cross over water to reach Faith Tabernacle on Sundays. By May 2015, the Church commenced ‘Wonder Double’ Outreach phase based on prophecy. Bishop Oyedepo soon ordered for overflow tents to be erected and by January 2016, 52,000 seats were provided under tents for people outside Faith Tabernacle Auditorium making a total of 102,000 capacity. Presently the plan for a 100,000 capacity Faith Theatre has been jettisoned for a minimum 120,000 capacity auditorium which could be further increased. The Church has continued to spread and by early 2018, was well over 6,000 Churches, apart from the Lagos structure which is the largest structure of the ministry. In Delta State alone, over 500 Churches have been registered. The announcement of today thus signifies another intensive church planting drive by the Church. Another sister Church, the Redeemed Christian Church of God has planted over 20,000 Churches in Nigeria alone and both churches along with Deeper Life Bible Church have the largest network of Churches both in Nigeria and all over Africa. This is all in their bid to ensure that the Gospel of Christ reaches all the ends of the earth before Jesus comes according to scriptures. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1556321771178355&id=444807728996437

Ademola47:ASUU being on strike has no relevance to the subject matter in any shape or form. Lalasticlala |
What nonsense! Rename a road after him not a university. There are too many stakeholders in a university who wouldn't want the change. Lalasticlala |
ugo4u:The greatest problem I have with Islam is the ability to colonise a person intellect in totality. Kukah is a Nigerian seeking to educate Nigerian kids who happens to be called almajiri. These fools only now remembered the need to help almajiri simply because they see Christian missions now taking the initiative. If it were up to them, they don't really give a damn about those kids. And when those brainwashed kids are recruited into boko haram MURIC won't remember to tell them to only kill Muslims, . Muric won't remember to tell government not to deploy christian soldiers to go and die in the front line against book haram. They won't tell them not to vote in elections that would decide the fate of christians. They won't tell the almajiri kids not to beg money from Christians on the road but when it comes to empowering the Almajiri with western education just like their own kids got from western countries they tell Christians to hands off.... So the way I see it if we Christians in Nigeria want to live a peaceful life then we must be ready to give the almajiri the western education the Northern oligarchy is so afraid of. Western education brings liberty, emancipation from religious indoctrination, global perspectives, cross fertilization of knowledge, scientific advancement and so much more. That whole propaganda about kukah trying to force feed the almajiri with Christianity is blatant rubbish. The missionaries of old never did that neither would the missionaries of today try such in a place like sokoto or kano. The point here is this, the muric's of these world don't want the almajiri educated so they can continue to be foot soldiers in the jihad movement to islamise Nigeria or continue to serve as blind electoral bloc voters to continue to put bigot islamist in power. Lalasticlala |
Well Nigeria is a secular country and evangelization is not a crime. If the parents of the Almajiri kids consent to their kids being schooled by a Christian mission then to hell with muric. |
CodeTemplar:exactly, universities may not be the best place for everyone to go. |
. |
Yea seventeen Nigerian schools were given. Just make sure you use d money well. |
Harvard and Yale, two private universities are thinking up ways to fight climate change by dimming the effect of the sun. While our own ASUU are thinking up the next strategy on how to fight FG. On another note before they try anything, it better be put to the United Nations General Assembly for a vote. If they mess things up it is developing and under developed nations that would suffer the most. So we better have a say. |
CodeTemplar:The guy is an impostor... |
ajl:What is your name sir? If you tell me I would help ensure it is removed lol. |
CrazeMan69:Lol the catholic church is worth $142 billion USD with investments in real estate, steels, chemicala. Latter day saints worth $42billion, Church of England worth $10 billion usd. Why not spread your own salary or savings to the poor first - Jesus was not trying to create millionaires there. You don't create wealth by dividing it rather you create wealth by multiplying it. |
Dottore:How do you know a greater number of his members are poor? How many of the 6,000 branches of living faith have you visited to make this assertion. You must have visited at least 600 to make such an assertion. Right? Yes of course, there is no gathering of people without the poor, even wealthy nations still have poor people. So definitely living faith must have some poor folks. But my ish with ur comment is you referring to the majority as poor. Moreover, if Winners collects the same type of collections as other churches then the sensible explanation for the unique wealth of the church could be that they have more prosperous members. |
MrSix:Right here in Nigeria. How does that better your argument? |
MrSix:No, dangerously wealthy in 67 countries of the world! |

People like you are the reason Nigeria is where it is... How many people from developed countries acquire so much wealth from religious institutions?
