barojana:I'm not sure this addresses the issue of limited spaces. But it is worth exploring sha. For me I think collaboration would be better placed in the health sector. Imagine big churches building big hospitals and equipping it while govt staffs it. |
HigherEd:Can you just imagine The British aren't doing that because they love Nigerians or Nigeria but because it actively funds their govt. Every year the UK makes about £60 million pounds from foreign students. While findings by timeshigher revealed that a lot of research in UK universities are funded by the millions in overcharge of foreign students especially the likes of Nigeria, India and co. I hope this is a wake up call to the Nigerian govt, people would always crave for university education and unfortunately Nigeria has one of the poorest university/population ratio in the world. While the likes of US, India, France have thousands Nigeria still has less than 300. And to make matters worse, the existing ones are mostly in shambles. CodeTemplar |
As 128,639 citizens study in foreign universities By Dayo Adesulu NO fewer than one million students seeking admission through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, every year have failed to get slots in tertiary institutions in Nigeria as the system cannot admit more than 600,000 in any given year. In 2013, 1,629,102 registered for UTME, in 2014, it was 1,606753 and 1,000,400 in 2015. For 2016, a total of 1,589,175 registered, just as 1,736,571 and 1,662,762 registered in 2017 and 2018 respectively. Kano State Deputy Governor Professor Hafiz Abubakar monitoring the conduct of the ongoing Joint Admission and Matriculation Examination across the State. File Photo With 158 universities and 115 polytechnics, colleges of education and monotechnics, their carrying capacity is still slightly above 600,000. Meanwhile, an average of 1.6 million UTME candidates register for entrance examination yearly. Available statistics show that the approved capacity by the National Universities Commission, NUC, for each of the federal universities is between 7,000 and 15,000. There are some state and private universities whose capacities are between 1,000 and 4,000. This is imperative because the Quality Assurance Department of the NUC ensures that no university admits beyond its capacity. Besides, investigations also revealed that the grading of students’ WASSCE results and UTME score by universities as qualifications for admission is one of the reasons WAEC and NECO candidates engage in examination malpractices. They do so in order to score ‘A’s or ‘B’s. They feel that having grade A or B in WASSCE would give them the chance of securing the limited admission spaces in the universities. Screening exercises Recall that since the cancellation of post-UTME, universities have adopted modality for admission. One of the screening exercises is to ensure that any candidate who scores A1 in WASSCE result gets 10 points, B2, 8; B3, 6; C4, 5; C5, 4 and C6, 3 points. Thus, a candidate with 5’A’s gets 50 points automatically. If such candidate scores over 200 in UTME, his chances of securing admission is almost certain than those who have C6 parallel. Since the cancellation of post-UTME, candidates have consistently complained that though they score 230 and above in UTME, yet due to lack of ‘A’s and ‘B’s in their WASSCE, they were denied admission. The direct implication is that many candidates who ordinarily would not indulge in exam malpractice, as they would be satisfied with a score of C6 or C5 to gain admission, now given the fear of missing out in the limited admission spaces, indulge in examination malpractices. After several years of failures in some cases, parents and guardians do assist these students to source for syndicates and fund the malpractice. Ordinarily, if the carrying capacity of the Nigerian universities is directly proportional to the number of admission seekers, there would have been no need for institutions of higher learning to introduce yardstick to trim down intake. Many are of the opinion that increasing the carrying capacity of the existing universities would automatically resolve this admission deficits. Assuming every student passed both WASSCE with UTME with distinctions, where are the admission spaces? Yearly, about 1.7 million candidates sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME. Out of this figure, less than 700,000 are admitted both in public and private institutions. Even those who would have willingly gone to private universities could not because of the cost implications on their families. This year, the total number of candidates who sat for the UTME was less than 1,662,762 million and only about 600,000 would eventually be admitted at the end of the exercise. What this portends is that every year, Nigeria has a spillover of a million candidates without hope of tertiary education. Some students whose parents can afford the cost of foreign education have already been taken to the United Kingdom, United States of America, Asian and some other African countries. It is mind-boggling that the UK remains the number one destination for Nigerian students who study abroad. According to UNESCO, in 2016, there were 17,973 Nigerians studying in UK universities. Meanwhile, Mr. Iain Steward, member of the British Parliament, said that their target was to ensure about 30,000 Nigerians are studying in UK universities by 2020. If that is the British contention, what is the target of our government for education of its citizenry? Following closely is Ghana which has 71,000 Nigerian students, with Nigerians paying about one billion dollars annually as fees. Lamido Sanusi, former CBN governor, said at a public lecture that although there are no comprehensive data on the number of Nigerian students abroad, recent data have shown that there are about 71,000 Nigerian students in Ghana paying about US$1billion annually as tuition fees and upkeep, as against the annual budget of US$751million for all Nigerian federal universities. UNESCO on its part said that 13,919 Nigerian students studied in Ghana as at 2016, indicating a whooping 50 per cent rise from figures as at 2012. In the United States, in 2014, the United States Embassy noted that 7,318 Nigerian students were studying in more than 700 universities and colleges in that country. The Malaysian Government is not left out as it has set the ambitious goal of becoming the world’s sixth largest education exporter by 2020. As a result, the Malaysian Higher Education sector is rapidly advancing, making it a popular study destination for international students. There are about 13,000 Nigerian students in Malaysian universities. UNESCO reported that 3,257 Nigerian students were studying in Canada in 2016. However, according to former Ambassador Perry John Calderwood, Canadian High Commissioner in Nigeria, more than 6,000 Nigerian students were studying in Canadian universities in 2014. He also said that Nigeria has become the eighth largest source of foreign students in Canada. Source of foreign students In the Eastern European countries of Russia and Ukraine, UNESCO disclosed that more than 3,300 Nigerian students were studying in Ukraine with the number of Nigerian students studying in Russia gradually increasing over the past few years. It placed the figure at 777 Nigerian students studying in Russia in 2016. In Hungary, the University of Debrecen, one of the best and widely-known schools in the country has over 700 Nigerian students, more than half of that number undertaking courses in the medical field. In South African universities, Nigerian students have a reported population of 2,525 in 2016. Also, about 1,755 Nigerian students were reported studying in UAE in 2016, just as 1,915 Nigerian students were reportedly studying in Saudi Arabia in 2016. Other countries with Nigerian students are India with 1,260 students, Egypt,1,189 students; Australia, 949 students; Turkey, 876 students; and Germany with 845 Nigerian students as at 2016. It is saddening to note that there are no records of the number of foreign students studying in Nigerian universities. crafteck:Is it your billions? Did you or your family contribute a dime in the billions? Why are you so pained and crying more than the 'bereaved'? Have you ever seen a church go kidnap people to come and worship in their church and then puts a gun to their head to give money? Does Nigerian law forces you to give money to church, if not why are you concerned? What is your business if I alongside the pastors celebrate materialism? People who give to church are happy with what church does with it. If not they would have stopped giving just as many have stopped. I give my church money and I am happy about it. So who are you to be running your tongue. It all boils down to IT IS NOT YOUR BUSINESS! As per freeze I hope he won't go to a place where ppl would give him and hisr followers serious beatings. Social media is different from the streets. But it seems he is getting sense small small as he has changed from free sheeple to free nation. |

The problem with headlines like this is. When you call someone a pastor and yet you claim the pastor is doing something not endorsed by Jesus, then it means the person wasn't a pastor to begin with. There are christian rituals and it includes Communion, Baptism by water and the likes. And if a person's isn't doing that, but sacrificing a woman then he is clearly drawing power from another religion that isn't Christianity. A better title would read "fake(or Impostor) pastor caught using woman for rituals." You need to emphasise that he is a fake pastor so you don't subtly discredit Christianity with the actions of people who aren't even Christian to begin with. On the other hand if you are not sure of the credibility of the story or allegation then you would title it "Pastor allegedly caught using a woman for rituals". Be careful and stop roping Christianity anyhow. |

TheVictorious:The average Nigerian cannot deal with any slight authority he has over a fellow human. In the attempt to get the respect he doesn't want to earn, he makes people his subjects and fear induced sycophants. Word! That's the blatant truth. I don't know what is wrong with us as a people to be honest. I remember my stay in NCCF back during service and I was just horrified and irritated with the way some so called leaders would behave so unkindly to the people they perceive as lower. It is indeed a Nigerian thing..... |
Lol never knew a state govt institution could shut an FG outfit |
SBG04:You must be a complete fool if you can't make your case without throwing insults. You can make use of Google to know Germany does have a President. |

You don't receive president and a chancellor the same way. Different protocols. |
CodeTemplar:Lol true. Once a project is done by a group of people voluntarily then let them live with their choice rather than giving us epistles on how industry should be built. Just imagine if a church builds an auto industry, you would start hearing things like this from some stupid Nigerians "how can church build an auto industry with money of the poor yet the poor cannot afford to buy the car" ![]() Some would even say the church is the problem of their village. Yet when you ask the how they either blurt out usual meaningless statements or keep shut. |
I know some of the "build industry" crew would soon start landing here. Pls jejely face ur govt, much of the money building Nigerian churches aren't even exclusively provided by Nigerians by the way. Churches build Hospitals, Schools and Orphanages not industry. Churches don't collect allocation from govt so don't presume you can tell them what to spend on. Lalasticlala |

Yes we must not let them forget Leah Sharibu |
You can't. The best way to raise a child is to first love his her mother. |
HigherEd:Its not a wonder that pastors who came out of Islamic homes are the ones most suspicious of Islam. Its because many know what Islam is capable of doing. Many today don't know that redeemers university is complaining of poor receptivity from Ede community because it is a Christian university. As Christians living in a country like this, we got to be alert 24/7 or we would see this islamist govt take over completely. Who were the mumu Christians who allowed a constitution of a secular state be filled with islamisation content, while Christianity was barely or never mentioned. Now, just watch as govt would be reacting because of this yet they keep quiet when MURIC comes to spew trash. |
Lakuli Oyedepo please small small abeg o. I seriously feel Osinbanjo is cornered. I really want to lambast him too but I won't ouf of respect for his clerical portfolio. But I have lost my respect and trust in him. Btw if Oyedepo is talking like this openly, it could mean Adeboye self is frustrated privately. The reason why we always insist on a Muslim/Christian or Christian/Muslim ticket is to avoid exactly what is happening now. The Benue massacre has been going on for long and no one in the FG is doing anything about it. Leah Sharibu has been forgotten! I am not from the East but look at the vigor to which IPOB was attacked, remember the roadblocks to south east? Can anyone really reconcile the response to that to the response on Fulani herdsmen. If we have done half of what was done to ipob to herdsmen then this would have ended... |
THIS IS AN EVIL GOVERNMENT -Bishop David Oyedepo *Says ‘I don’t know how a believer will sit down in any place of authority (in Nigeria) and be looking like Mumu’. * Adds ‘We Never had it so bad’. *Insists ‘I warned you but you never heard’. In the words of Bishop Oyedepo: ‘Now all this boko haram in the name of Fulani herdsmen, the power of God will blast them. I say to them.....Too Late! Shooting people in the Church! Their generation will be forgotten. Killing the Priests of God! Everyone of them will end up in shame. This is an evil government! I curse them-everyone (at the root of) this evil. I curse them in Jesus name. Everyone of them is silenced. Everyone that won’t let the Church rest. Everyone that won’t let the nation rest. Their rest is taken from them. 1 Chronicles 20:12,23-24. In the name of Jesus, this gangup will fail’. Continuing, he said: In Benue today where the 2 Priests were killed, not everyone will go to Church because a troubler or troublers are coming. They will be looking up and down. Every force sent to trouble the Church, God will trouble them. This is an Islamic uprising, this is a strategic jihad. Herdsmen have always been here. In 2006, my keynote speech was-A wake up call to a nation on the brink of collapse. I have said it before-if you are not angry with the wicked, you are wicked. God is angry with the wicked everyday. The peace of those promoting this wickedness, God is taking away. Their supplies shall dry up. Nigeria shall not see war. There is no day this country called Nigeria will become an Islamic State-Never! It is impossicant! There is no day when Nigeria as one nation will become an Islamic nation. Write it down... Everybody be warned, whether in power or not in power. There is no day Nigeria will become an Islamic nation and remain one nation. When Armed Robbers come to your house, do you take permission from government to attack them? We are not just believers, we are soldiers of Christ. We are not dummies. We are spiritual soldiers. Everyone who won’t let this nation Nigeria rest/take them out (prayers). Jeremiah 29:7 Now they are defending the rights of herdsmen against genuine farmers, you run your cattle on my farm to graze-and you still kill me on top of it. It has never been this bad. I warned you before but you never heard. Today PVC are no longer available. People line up from morning to night-no PVC. What a wicked system. I don’t know how a believer will sit down in any place of authority and be looking like ‘Mumu’ said the man of God. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1332674230209778&id=444807728996437

Earthbound:Lol I am just starting o |
Death threats were sent to her weekly, newspapers slandered her relentlessly, and ministers divided against her. Mischievous people would bring the mentally disturbed to her meetings, knowing they would cause a great emotional scene. This was done so many times, that many naive people thought it was Maria's meetings that drove these people to insanity! And because many misunderstood her theology, the citizens called for the authorities daily to shut her meetings down. Nevertheless, Maria refused to leave Oakland until she felt God was finished. When it seemed the gangs began to get the upper hand in her meetings, the Oakland Police Department deputized "bouncers" to protect the services. But this got out of hand because the bouncers were inexperienced both in character and common sense. Maria once said "I have been in great dangers; many times not knowing when I would be shot down, either in the pulpit, or going to and from meetings...But I said I would never run, nor compromise. The Lord would always put His mighty power on me, so that He took all fear away, and made me like a giant...If in any way they had tried to shoot, or kill me, He would have struck them dead, and I sometimes told them so." MARIA'S PROPHECY OF DOOM FOR WEST COAST CAUSES CONTROVERSY: Then there was the wild prophecy that came from Maria saying disaster would hit the coast and destroy it. After she spoke this, the newspapers terrorized Sister Etter and made her out to be a common criminal. They misquoted and hyped up the prophecy to such a degree that it was not accurately known what was actually said. Then as could be expected, other men and women operating in the counterfeits to the gifts of the Spirit jumped on the prophecy bandwagon. Deceived by the enemy, these people prophesied more doom and gloom for the West Coast, causing great controversy. MARIA MARRIES SAMUEL ETTER: 10 years after her divorce, Maria met a wonderful man from Hot Springs, Arkansas, named Samuel Etter. God sent her the perfect mate. The two were married in 1902. Sister Etter had great respect for this gentleman and often referred to him as her "gift from God." Later she would write of him: "He stood bravely with me in the hottest battle, and since the day we were married has never shrank. He will defend the Word and all the gifts, and operations of the Holy Ghost, but does not want any fanaticism, or foolishness. It makes no difference what I call on him to do. He will pray, and preach, and sing, and is very good around the altar. The Lord knew what I needed, and it was all brought about by the Lord, through His love and care for me and the work." MARIA ARRESTED FOR PRACTICING "UNLICENSED MEDICINE" AND HYPNOTISM BY TRANCES: Maria was arrested four times during her ministry, but three of the citations never made it to court. New England was the only place where she was arrested and actually taken to court. Her trial in Framingham, Massachusetts, was based on charges that she practiced medicine without a license and hypnotized people with trances. It was a grand spectacle for the cause of Christ. Many people testified on her behalf, retelling their personal testimonies that could be likened to stories in the book of Acts. The great author and founder of Bethel Bible School, E. W. Kenyon, was among those who testified on her behalf. TESTIMONIES OF HEALINGS AT MARIA's MEETINGS There are many documented and verified testimonies of healings at Maria's Meetings including a boy with tuberculosis being healed instantly after Maria hit the Boy with the Bible calling out Tuberculosis. A woman was also brought by relatives on a wheelchair but returned home walking! She also partook in the Azuza revival where many great miracles where wrought. MARIA'S PROPHECY FULFILLED In 1906, San Francisco did experience the most devastating earthquake in American history, and Sister Etter's prophecy came forth in 1890. Gladys Hansen and Emmet Condon, after extensive research, estimated that over 3000 deaths were caused directly or indirectly by the catastrophe. MARIA'S LAST CHILD DIES: The summer of 1924 was difficult for Maria. At the age of eighty, with failing health from gastritis and dropsy, she received heart-breaking news. Her only daughter, Lizzie, age sixty, was killed in a streetcar accident. Now all of Maria's immediate family had gone to be with the Lord. And though her health was frail, she was still able to summon enough strength to stand in the pulpit to conduct the funeral. When she did, she exhorted the people to have faith in God and look to the heavens—not into the grave. During that year, there were times when Sister Etter was so weak she could not walk. But it didn't stop her from preaching. If she couldn't walk, she appointed someone to carry her in and place her behind the pulpit. Eventually, the Tabernacle presented a large wooden chair as a gift to Maria. Then when she seemed too weak to walk, a few strong men would carry the wooden chair from the church to her house, place her in it, and carry her back. The minute her feet hit the platform, the Spirit of God would quicken her and she would walk up and down the platform, preaching and ministering in the supernatural power of God. Hundreds witnessed how weak she seemed, then how incredibly strong she became. At the end of the service, the men would put her back in the chair and carry her home. MARIA GOES HOME TO BE WITH THE LORD: Three weeks before she died, the Lord revealed to Maria that, "It was only a matter of days before she would leave" to go to her reward. During this time, a lady brought her flowers to which Sister Etter replied, "I will soon be where the flowers will bloom forever. Maria Woodworth-Etter's end came without a struggle as she sank away slowly into a deep sleep: Before Sister Etter went home to be with the Lord at age eighty, she had buried all six of her children and two husbands; preached thousands of sermons from coast to coast; remained the victor over hoodlums and vicious ministers; blazed the trail for women in ministry; and unflinchingly displayed the power of the Holy Spirit with mighty signs and wonders following. She wasn't well educated. She didn't care about seminary classes and didn't take the time to explain how God worked. She preached a very simple Gospel, offered herself completely to Him, and believed for signs and wonders. Maria's one passion was for the Gospel to come alive and for people to be led by the Spirit. She preached many times with tears streaming down her face, begging those who heard to come to Christ. Her meetings and teachings paved the way for the founding of many Pentecostal denominations, including the Assemblies of God, Foursquare, and other similar denominations.
