[b]"Gen. 14:20, "And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he [Abram] gave him [Melchizedek king of Salem, the priest of the most high God, Ver. 18] TITHES of all [all the goods of war, Ver. 16]."
Heb. 7:1-10, "For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of God Most High, who meets with Abraham returning from the combat with the kings and blesses him, to whom Abraham parts a TITHE also, from all,

Now, behold how eminent this one is to whom the patriarch Abraham gives a TITHE also of the best of the booty. And, indeed, those of the sons of Levi who obtain the priestly office have a direction to take TITHES from the people according to the law,  And here, indeed, dying men are obtaining TITHES,  And so, to say, through Abraham, Levi also, who is obtaining the TITHES, has been TITHED, for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek meets with him."There are a number of things we can learn concerning tithing from this section of Scriptures. In this, the first mention of tithing in the Bible, Abram gives to Melchizedek (a priest of God who was also the king of the city of Salem) a tithe of the best of the booty taken in war.

Notice that this was not wheat, corn, wine, oil, or cattle from Abram’s personal possessions, but rather booty taken from conquered nations. There is nothing stated here that would cause us to conclude that Abram (later changed to Abraham) ever tithed on a regular basis on his own person possessions. Although Abraham gave Melchizedek a tithe of the booty of war, he told the king of Sodom that he would take none of it for himself."

Hi all,

I've been busy all day even though this thread is moving so fast! But I just needed to say here that you guys are making it difficult for me to share anything because it is fast becoming a quarrel and hilarity than a thirst to examine truth.

The first time that tithes were mentioned in the Bible is in Gen. 14:20 -- "And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all. "

hat verse is loaded with deep truth; but quite so often, those who argue against tithing from the LAW that came centuries later will find it difficult to see the implication of that verse.

I'd like to share a bit more on that - but certainly not while the quarrel is going on.

Bless all.
We are all waiting to read your on contribution on this topic that is more than 3 years old. Try to remain in the frame " TO tithe or NOT to tithe.

Nitpicking Gnats This was words from stimulus  and  GNATS are bitting flies, while Nitpicking refers to unjustified critism

"For example, people take great pains to ensure their dress codes are keeping every bizarre fashion trend at bay by the application of nitpicking policies"

In using the proverb of gnats and camels, Jesus was vividly illustrating the foolishness of convoluted priorities

“You blind guides, you who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel.” (Matthew 23:24)
nitpicking gnats As far as straining gnats, I'd like to say that I for one am NOT a big fan
of eating gnat soup! Jesus was NOT so much condemning gnat straining in His
famous quote so much as He was condemning camel swallowing. So I guess the
question we need to ask ourselves is this: what exactly is the camel we are
swallowing? Is it that we are spending too much time "nitpicking" our
worship and not enough actually doing it?

What they tithe was Agricultural products Not money
[10] Nehemiah 10:37-38, "And that we should bring the firstfruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God and the TITHES of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the TITHES in all the cities of our tillage. And the priest the son of Aaron shall be the Levites, when the Levites take TITHES: and the Levites shall bring up the TITHE of the TITHES unto the house of our God, to the chambers into the treasure house." Again, no mention of money, only agricultural products of the fields, and only the Levites and priests could have access to these tithes and offerings in the house of God.[11] Nehemiah 12:44, "And at that time were some appointed over the chambers for the treasures, for the offerings, for the fruitfruits, and for the TITHES, to gather into them out of the fields of the cities the portions of the law for the priests and Levites: for Judah rejoiced for the priests and for the Levites that waited."Nothing new in this verse that, we have not already discussed here in NAIRALAND.[12] Nehemiah 13:5, 12 "And he had prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meat offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the TITHES of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the offerings of the priests.""Then brought all Judah the TITHE of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries."Same story: ONLY agricultural products, and ONLY to the Levites and priests.[13] Amos 4:4, "Come to Bethel, and transgress; at Gilgal multiply transgression; and bring your sacrifices every morning, and your TITHES after three years."[14] Malachi 3:8-10, "Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings…"

Please sir, may I restate my appeal one more time (since your rejoinder does not answer to the first one): could we help this very interesting discussion move forward? It seems to me that most complaints are borne out of nitpicking gnats and failing to look at the bigger picture.

[4] Leviticus 27:30-33, "And all the TITHE of the LAND, whether of the SEED of the land, or of the FRUIT, of the tree, is the Lord’s: it is holy unto the Lord. And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof. And concerning the TITHE of the HERD, or of the FLOCK, even of whatsoever passes under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the Lord. He shall not search whether it be good or bad, neither shall he change it, "

TITHE was never met for pastors as the Levites was supposed to use it to feed the poor after the 10% buBurtons offering from the collected tithe.
This is what the then priest avoided, they neither feed the poor nor the mandatory 10% offering,
Malachi 3

7      Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?
8     Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
9     Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.
10     Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

Thank you, but may I know if  any of the Scripture  writings  regarding voluntary giving, have anything to do with "tithing?"
If not, what the definition of Christian tithing is saying here
judemetieh:
Tithing is a biblical injuction, it was made when the Levites who where still doing the work of God where available, but remember that they at a point abandoned their duty post and as such who do you pay the tithe for now when the Levites have left their duty.  Secondly, tithing is 10% of total earnings.  How many people really pay it accordingly.  I as a person find it amusing when people say they pay tithe.  As they pay just from the salary they earn and forgeting about other incomes they make along side.  That is not tithing.  10% of all total income must be given to God.  anything short of that is robbing God.
A tenth part of one’s annual income contributed voluntarily or due as a tax, esp. for the support of the clergy or church." ( A. H. C.Dictionary, p. 1444).

Tithing was commanded by the LAW while Giving is voluntary from the HEART. Is that it?

HND is just a stop gap. No longer available in so many countries of the world.

HND is a stressful qualification that will make your Junior your senior later in future.

Polytechnic was to produce ND only.

HND is like you can not go further in academic you decided to end your carrier as a Middle level Professional

100 employees of YABATECH may be rendered homeless
By Rotimi Lawrence Oyekanmi
TO the academic members of staff of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), recently given university status by the federal government, the allegation couldn't possibly be true.
In a swift reaction, The YABATECH chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) put up a counter advert in the same newspaper the next day, warning members of the public not to bid for YABATECH quarters because "they are not for sale."
Those quarters have been given to YABATECH as far back as 1971. There is a decree, Decree No 23 backing this up. All our efforts to meet with the implementation committee to explain the situation have been blocked."
"But, definitely, it couldn't have been the intention of the Federal Government under (former) President (Olusegun) Obasanjo to sell the residential quarters of the first institution in Nigeria, now transforming to the City University of Technology, Yaba. I believe there is still some misunderstanding, and we are making every effort.
"And it will become more difficult to attract qualified high calibre people, particularly in a place like Lagos. The academic premises sit on 16.5 hectares, which is a far cry from the minimum standards of the land area required by the National Universities Commission (NUC). And when you excise the residential part, and this part has some important supporting facilities already, it has a primary school, a secondary school, it has a sewage treatment plant, it has a demonstration facility for our Hotel and Catering students."

ASUP lauds decision to scrap HND
From Isa Abdulsalami, Jos
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has expressed joy over the suspension by government of the proposed scrapping of the Higher National Diploma (HND) programme, following plans to consolidate federal politechnics and colleges of education.

ASUP's National Publicity Secretary, Victor Dawurung, said the scrapping was facilitated by the former Minister of Education Dr. Sayyadi Abba Ruma.

According to Dawurung, the former miniser had reasoned that in line with due process, the proposed consolidation required the enactment of an enabling law through the National Assembly, and therefore advised all stakeholders to await the completion of that legislative process.

until otherwise directed, adding that the programmes remained legal for now.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has fixed June 18 to 21 to continue the re-negotiation of the "FG/ASUP" agreement of September 2001, which was discontinued as a result of the withdrawal of the union because of the proposed scrapping of the HND programmes.
CareerCoren Introduces Annual Practising Licence by Hndholder(op): 12:18pm On Jun 12, 2007
The Council of COREN, at its meeting of 25th March, 2007, approved that as from January 2008, registered engineering
personnel would be issued with COREN Annual Practising Licence. This will be in the form of a certificate.
Engineering Consulting Firms will also be issued with Annual Practising Certificates.

The Council has directed further that the list of engineering personnel and consulting firms that have paid up their
Annual Practising fees be published in the National Dailies.

Furthermore, government organizations will be required to request for the Annual Practising Licence as a condition for
engaging engineering consultants.

It has been observed that many engineering personnel in the public service are indebted to COREN for a period of 3
years and above. The Council has directed that as from January, 2008, those owing up to 3 years will have their
registration suspended until such payment is made and the list published in major National Dailies. It will be
illegal for such officials to approve engineering designs and other engineering documents on behalf of their
organizations. Engineering Personnel are required to visit COREN Website to know their financial indebtedness and
settle same to avoid any embarrassment.

As stated earlier a list of consulting firms that have renewed their practising licences will be passed to all
government ministries and parastatals so that only those that have paid annual practising fees will be allowed to do
business with government.

All payments should be made to COREN Account No 6012005088 domiciled at Zenith Bank Plc. Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.
The depositor’s copy of the bank teller (s) should be submitted to the Zonal Officers or sent directly to COREN
Headquarters, along with the current postal address for the purposes of mailing the receipt to the depositor. The
purpose of payment should be clearly stated at any corner of the bank teller.

FG suspends scrapping of HND programme
By Jude Owuamanam, Jos

The Federal Government has suspended the scrapping of higher national diploma programme in Nigerian polytechnics.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Mr. Victor Dawurung, told our correspondent in Jos on Monday that the decision to suspend the cancellation of the programme was received by the union from the Federal Ministry of Education last week.

He said the decision was conveyed to the National Board for Technical Education through a letter with reference number DHE/POLY/53/CI/V.II/266 and signed by the acting Director, Tertiary Education, Dr. Jamila Shu‘ara, on behalf of the former Minister of Education, Dr. Sayyadi Abba Ruma.

Dawurung said the Federal Government had stated in the letter that the decision to suspend the action was due to the proposed consolidation of federal polytechnics and the colleges of education.

He said the former minister had explained that the decision to scrap the HND programme was wrongly taken because the consolidation required the enactment of an enabling law through the National Assembly.

The ASUU secretary, therefore, advised all stakeholders to await the completion of all legislative process.

Dawurung said the union had decided to reopen negotiations with the Federal Government on the September 2001 agreement, which was suspended as a result of the union‘s objection to the scrapping of the programme.

He said the renegotiation of the agreement was scheduled for June 18 to 21.

Dawurung said that the meeting would address the disparity between polytechnics and universities, funding and running of degree programmes by the polytechnics.

He added that other issues in the 2001 agreement including the setting up of the National Polytechnics Commission, enhanced salary for chief lecturers and retirement age for polytechnic teachers would be discussed.

Dawurung said the union also intended to reach a new agreement on the new consolidated tertiary institution salary structure.

The former agreement was rejected because it lumped together academic and non-academic staff.

While commending the Federal Government for bringing sanity to polytechnics, Dawurung said by the decision, the admission of prospective students into the HND programme in polytechnics would continue.

Education: Task before Yar’Adua
By Sulaimon Olanrewaju
http://www.tribune.com.ng/05062007/edu.html

Goodluck and Yar'Adua President Umar Yar’Adua is coming into office at a critical time in the history of education in Nigeria.
The previous administration commenced a reform programme that was not fully fine tuned before the expiration of its tenure.
Lecturers and students in polytechnics and colleges of education are unsure of their fate because of the reform programme, which called for the merging of some of them with universities.
It is still unclear which of the polytechnics and the colleges will be merged with universities and which ones will stay on their own.

Parents of primary school children are uncertain whether their wards will spend six years at that level of education or have a stretch of nine years as recommended by the immediate past administration. Since March 14, university students have been out of school because members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have been on strike. It still in the air when academic work will resume in the universities as ASUU is adamant that the strike will continue until its demands are met by the government. Similarly, the nation’s universities lack the basic facilities that promote learning. For this reason, none of the 81 universities was able to make the list of the best 1,000 universities in the world.
