AN APPEAL FOR JUSTICE IN TARABA STATE

I wish to bring to the attention of the public and the Government of Taraba State the situation surrounding my brother’s arrest and continued detention.

On the 18th of September 2025, my brother encountered cows destroying his rice farm. While attempting to chase the animals out of his farmland, the herder involved allegedly attacked him with a cutlass and a stick. In an effort to protect himself from harm, my brother managed to disarm the attacker, resulting in a minor injury to the herder.

Despite the clear elements of self-defense, my brother was arrested. We were later informed that, in line with a directive said to be from the Taraba State Government, anyone who injures another person is required to pay a total sum of ₦5,000,000 before release.

Since then, I have been contributing ₦70,000 every Monday to meet the weekly demand of ₦150,000, all toward this ₦5 million requirement. This situation has placed a heavy emotional and financial burden on my family.

This raises very important questions:

Is this policy serving justice in cases where citizens act purely in self-defense?

What is the purpose and destination of the ₦5 million penalty in circumstances like this?

How do farmers protect their livelihoods when defending themselves can lead to such severe punishment?

I respectfully appeal to the Executive Governor of Taraba State, His Excellency Dr. Agbu Kefas, to kindly review this matter. My brother acted only to protect his life and his farm. We are pleading for fairness, compassion, and a reconsideration of his case.

Your Excellency, please intervene and grant my brother the justice he deserves.
