PetsRe: Do Nigerians Really Don't Beat Their Dogs For Bad Behaviour? by IamAnderson(m): 12:56am On Nov 26, 2019
NevetsIbot:
Good evening everyone. I have a 9 months old Rottweiler and he's a lovely dog but had issues with him not knowing where to poop as he did it anywhere the urge got him... The way I was able to correct this behaviour was by beating him in the undesired spot once he poops there. This was the same way I trained my Old German shepherd......so far, the only aggressive tendency I found in my old German shepherd was that he usually growled when I tried to move his plate when he eats...No aggressive tendency in my Rottweiler.. he's just one big cuddly clumsy fella who loves people.

The dog breeder I got my Rottie from would also beat or smack his Rottie so hard that I'd pity the dog only if the dog does wrong yet no case aggression except towards strangers. Same thing with a friend who has a 4yrs Rottweiler.

Now I check online and see all these "oyibo" people saying never to beat a dog or never to spank a dog and some of those sorts of stuffs and I'm wondering howhuh Do Nigerians follow these rules??

I like to believe they do, then why do we have very few scenarios over here of dogs turning on their owners and quite a handful of scenarios over there where their dogs go through the so called scientific method of training? I'm confused Af.

Cc Lalasticlala, mynd44, seun
first of all, their are several ways to train your dog on where to poop without beating but you chose the lazy way to do it, I never beat my dog with anything to teach him where to poop and he never does it in my house or his kennel.
their are two ways to teach something to a dog; positive reenforcement and negative reenforcement.
you can teach a dog any particular skill or command without beating or enforcing fear or bullying to control the dog and the dog will turn out well trained and strong willed.
most dogs that get beaten frequently by their owners are usually the type that if the owner raises his hand they'll cower in fear, that doesn't mean they are well trained, it just means they are afraid, if the owner doesn't beat them they'll do whatever they wanted to do without even registering it as bad because the instrument of fear is absent.
beating a dog can also make it overly aggressive or cowardly, some dogs can't even be themselves once their owners are around, some bow their heads and walk like housemaids when their owner calls them, is that one training and good manners or just fear?.
all those things you wanted to teach your dog that you had to beat it to do, their are several ways to do then without beating, if you research more you'll see more ways to positively reenforce behavior into your dog.
I don't beat my dog and yet my dog is smarter and more well behaved than some I've seen, I've seen people that use this beating method and still complain that the dog misbehaves when they aren't there to threaten them.
don't get me wrong, sometimes some dogs require a tap on the snout once in a while but the whole flogging an animal that doesn't even understand English or remember what it did wrong is just stupid.
lastly, who told you that white people loose control over their dogs unlike Africans? lmao
the amount of well trained foreign dogs cannot even be compared to what we have here FYI, don't you see the numerous k9 units in the military, dog actors, emotional crutch dogs, seeing eye dogs e.t.c, or even random videos of well trained dogs online?. now think, how many different skill sets of dogs do we have here apart from "guard dog" and "pet"?
those stories you read about dogs turning on their owners are mostly fake

The truth is, I don’t walk him very much and it’s because am usually not around due to school and stuff
well there's the reason to your problem
that dog needs some serious socialisation before it can get balanced on walks, forcing it to obey you during walks and struggling with the dog on the road is a big no because the dog is only going to get frustrated and channel it's anxiety to every living thing on the road like you said.
if you are ready to start socialisation for him you'll have to dedicate some time to work on him,
*you'll need to teach him a "put down" command(something that means stop or no or calm down, just something to make him know you want him to stop what he's doing),
*you'll need treats to congratulate him when he checks up on you during walks (when he comes close to you or looks at you, if you do this often he'll stay by your side and follow your movement),
*you'll need to desensitize him to crowds (chain him to a place where he can see several people and vehicles pass for a long time, if you do this frequently he'll get used to seeing people on the road and stop trying to attack.
*put him on a short leash(wrap his leash around your palm to shorten it) to restrict his movement when you suspect he's getting aggressive or ready to attack or when you're close to what usually triggers him to attack. it'll reduce the probability of him attacking and if he does you'll have better control over him.
*before you walk him, after you bring him out you can wait a little for that initial excitement to go before you walk him, he'll be calmer.
if you did all these things when he was a puppy, no matter how stubborn or aggressive the dog is,walking him won't be hard.
you should start practicing the commands and leash control with the dog in the compound then on empty roads and finally crowds
if you do these things frequently then you'll see a change in his character during walks

It's specially designed for dogs like op's. It won't wound your dog rather control it to stop pulling and attacking other dogs on the road

The problem is when used wrongly it could choke your dog there by causing problem

The right name is prong collar
I don't support all these choke collars and prong collars, I feel the dog just needs socialisation and positive conditioning.
and I feel if the prongs on that collar are strong enough to press through the fur of a hairy dog to actually work then it should be painful to the dog which can make the dog associate walks with pain or harm the dog if it decides to ignore the collar and still attack.
they work by causing pain and discomfort to the dogs by pinching the skin around their necks anyone that's telling you it doesn't hurt is lying to you.
over time, they can cause scratches, tears and even damage your dog's windpipe especially if you have a stubborn and strong willed dog

Hi guys, this is my first post on pet section and I’ll keep it short. So I have a dog. His name is tiger, very strong and sharp. My problem is, I can’t take him for a walk in fact anytime I try to walk him, he ends up taking me for a walk.. lol He tries to attack every living thing he meets on the way and it’s very embarrassing. So has anyone here experienced such and how can I fix this. This behavior started right from when he was still small..
Caucasian Shepherd cheesy
mastiffs too are notorious for this thing lol.
lemme ask you some questions so I'll see if there's something you can do to calm him down.
when did you Start walking him and how frequently do you walk him?

vincentjk:
Don't conclude yet, it happens in boerboels but very rare
he has a point tho, the markings, coat, sickle tail, ears and facial mask look Caucasian, these features can happen in boerbels although not usually all at a time...
it's possible the dog has Caucasian in it, but it could also be a rare physical appearance in a Boerbel, he wasn't completely off.
anyway the dog looks good and well fed smiley

hello pets lover...remembered my dog, he is so grown about 4 months plus. but, I am still very much confused about the dog breed.
some persons said cane corsos and while others said rottweiler...

please someone should help me out with the breed..
there is neither Rottweiler or cane corso in those dogs.
they are a mixture of Doberman and another breed...I'm thinking gsd.
the markings and head shape along with the ears show signs of the Doberman traits.
the fur length and body build along with few facial features show gsd

I've a tv on whatsapp where sex tapes are released on a daily showing people's faces and all that and yet nothing happens. I mean on a daily basis

I guess the babcock sextape went viral because of the institution or so

PetsRe: Murphy the Boerboel and Gustaf the German shepherd by IamAnderson(m): 10:21pm On Nov 20, 2019

your dog can get hookworm from just staying outside(were almost all dogs stay), even walking barefoot or defecating outside(I'm sure your dog doesn't use a toilet) can lead to a hookworm infection so avoiding raw meat isn't going to save your dog from getting worms at some point.
that's the whole point of regular deworming, if your dog is dewormed regularly then you don't need to fear worm infestations.
raw meat is very good for dogs if you know what you're doing, worm infestation isn't a good enough reason why you shouldn't feed your dog raw meat, your dog will still get worms as far as it stays outside, the advantages of raw feeding far outweigh a problem that can be fixed with one dose of dewormer smiley

it d breeder fault he said it looks like a corso
but still.. .that's not how a cane corso's ears should be cropped.
the cropping isn't nice on the dog tbh, imagine how it'll look as an adult, their are just 2 big holes at the side of it's head.
I suggest you find another litter bro

@iamanderson
Pls I notice my dog eyes has been red since yesterday till this moment, it's just red and the eyes is not swollen... Doh scisser is doing well and also eating well.
I just want to know if I should be worried or not

Thanks
if the eyes aren't itchy or emitting discharge then leave him alone for some time, it could be stress or allergies or irritation.
if it starts getting worse or it doesn't go by tomorrow then see a vet to examine it

House help o, my dog is always Hot anytime I go open his cage( his deeeek is always out) and most times he is sitting down, what can be the cause. He is still a virgin btw and just 1yr and a month old
erection in dogs doesn't necessarily have to do with libido unlike humans.
sometimes it's not even an erection, a dog's penis leaves the sheath when the dog stays in a particular position like sitting down.
erection in dogs can be because of happiness, excitement, or just boredom it's actually rarely because of libido tbh

It came as a surprise and also a thing of joy upon hearing this great news, Augusto's mum was appraised 2days ago in abuja and she performed wonderfully. She didn't just perform wonderfully but was also the best appraised boerboel (including males and females) thereby scoring a whooping 83.8 for having the best topline, Angulation and movement as well. The breeder, myself and everyone who know beauty of HOK have been smiling upon hearing this result. Truly hardwork pays

Congrats Dogwhisperer

We look forward to getting more good results from her lineage which is augusto and beauty's pups
this is nice, I'm already seeing that Augusto will be outstanding when. he's grown grin

I mistakenly unfollowed the thread and I didn't even see this update when you posted sad , I just remembered I haven't seen any updates in a while so I searched for it again

We don’t know where she ate the poison from, we noticed she hasn’t been eating (unlike her). We called the vet and he came, he kept giving her drip but her tummy was swollen on Sunday (her intestines) she pooped blood and died on Tuesday morning
did you deworm her?

Very late, I made up my mind to sell Murphy before his instincts kicked in. Just hope Augusto's will be a different case tho
maybe they're starting late because of something you're doing wrong.
are they ever in situations that require them to bark or you just leave them to play calmy with themselves all day.
I've noticed the dogs that weren't engaged in "rough play" bloom later
I feel if you want your dogs to start acting earlier you should show them that their are threatening things they should be scared of or be ready to attack cheesy
