Ukraine only asked to join the EU to improve their living conditions like they've seen all their neighbours do. Ukraine is the poorest country in Europe with GDP per capita around $3.5k whilst their ex-Soviet neighbours are boasting $20k to $30k per capita. They only wanted financial upliftment. Russia reacted violently, poisoning their President as far back as 2004, so they decided to apply for NATO membership in 2008 like all their neighbours did to protect themselves after trying to join the EU and seeing Russias reaction. That's the long and short of the Ukraine matter, a simple attempt by a people to improve their financial status and their big brother couldn't stomach it. NATO is already on Russias border from several countries and has never done anything to interfere in Russia, Russia is the one poisoning people (check Salisbury poisoning), hacking systems and carrying out sabotage on NATO countries. Russia even asked to join NATO but were told NATO is for democratic nations that see eye to eye on democratic ideals. They ask to join NATO but their little brother can't ask the same thing.
