Apart from interview performance, you may not know it but even a 4.0 GPA Maths will be valued over a 5.0 GPA History applicant, so long as the job involves commerce and numbers. They are most likely being interviewed by a numbers man if you are talking Financial services industry, and no numbers man will rate a 1st class History over a 2.1 Mathematics |

raumdeuter: Na Geography we dey use relax, or to follow babe go attend Govt or Commerce class Damn right, those courses are what we use to step down or relax brain small My first degree is in Maths with Economics. The economics was 1/4 of the course. Because of scheduling issues the economics classes were always clashing with the Maths modules or on a Wednesday afternoon when everyone else has shut down for Sports activities when we travel to other unis to play football matches. I barely attended Economics classes but will sometimes go to what they call study session (I've forgotten what they call it, it's where you will be working through questions in the presence of a PHD student monitoring the class but lectures aren't being delivered). I will be seeing guys in those classes that haven't seen me all year. I will just come in, solve some breakeven or price-elasticity questions, finish all the questions in like 15 minutes, and the full-time Econs students will now come and be asking me to teach them. Meanwhile I'm just meeting the concept for the first time but based on Maths, if you sabi any kind of simultaneous equations or linear algebra, those questions will be like piece of cake. I just dey laugh. I can count on hands the number of times I attended Economics classes throughout my whole degree and it didn't stop me acing the Econs section of my degree. I no come rate my Econs classmates at all, or any social sciences after few months. |

A Yoruba education graduate who intend gets employed at EY or KPMG will take ICAN the same way an accounting graduate or Engineering graduate will and they will all pass once they are sound.
U can argue all u want but there are people who studied mass comm and other art related courses working in the big 4. In fact just go to linked right now and type “ Mass communication kpmg” ; u will see profile of people who studied mass comm and currently working in KPMG pop up.
If u are smart u are smart ; forget all these Okpata yarns about dexterity or no dexterity ICAN is proof enough of your ability to handle manipulating numbers. I actually respect degree in Languages cos it involves learning rules and coding it into a way of speaking, as well as retentive memory. Language graduates often do well in commercial setting. |

Will you force them to pick a niche they don't like Mass Com is not a passion, it's a last resort You can accept Law, Economics, Business or Languages as proof of intelligence from arts course, maybe even Philosophy, that's it Languages is proof of reasoning and following rules to construct a language (similar to coding), so is Law. BlueRayDick: Which one is dexterous?
Is it not that they will first train them in those jobs ni? If u are an engineering graduate who gets employed in EY or First bank, u will have to undergo training like everyone else. All those talk about dexterous is just to massage ur STEM ego. The same training they will give a Yoruba education graduate is what they will give a mech engineering graduate who has been drafted into their graduate trainee program.
The crux of the matter is , most STEM degrees are useless in Nigeria because there are no much STEM jobs waiting for them in the labor market. so, I don't the need for continuous bashing of social sciences job. Maybe if u were talking about labour market in the UK, US and the west in general sha it will make sense. In the bank or in EY will you not do calculations? You can't be taking risk of telling a Masscom graduate to put 17% on something and they will be looking at you like ode. You think it's a joke but most non stem people cannot do basic everyday calculations required in those jobs. STEM course is a test of natural intelligence. It is proof that you can handle some concepts and calculations. Go and check all JAMB highest scores, they all end up in STEM. The only social science that intelligent students go on to do is Law or economics. So once you see STEM, LAW or Economics on their degree, you know a process of natural selection has already taken place to weed out the dumb ones from the smart ones and you can go ahead and interview the smart ones instead of wasting time.. You think its a joke but employers do discriminate on this basis and I take this very serious in my personal life. I have been fighting my niece for the last year. She is a prodigy but refusing to do Maths A Level. She is talking of Philosophy, Sociology A Levels, Biology and bla blah blah. I said Biology is good for Medicine but at your level of genius, you must include Maths to really rubber stamp your genius so employers can see it. Any Tom, Dick or Harry could score well in Philosophy by writing long essay, but science is where genius is proven. This is her GCSE result below. 7 is equivalent to A, 8 is a A* and 9 is A**. How will someone with this kind of result reduce themself to the level of an average Jane by taking sme sme courses that any Chinyere can do. You must show Maths A Level, and even if she goes on to do Medicine or Science in Uni, the Maths A Level will give her the foundation to be great in any STEM course she does.

BlueRayDick: The way u guys always bash social sciences , arts and humanities course graduates ehn; one would think Nigeria is a country where there are job opportunities for STEM related courses.
The funny thing is the people who form bulk majority of unemployed in this country are actually those who studied STEM courses.
Go to KPMG, EY,PWC,Delloitte, Banks, Insurance companies, HR consulting firms, etc; na engineering graduates, Biochemistry graduates, Geology graduates, etc full there.
How many jobs are available for STEM course graduates in this country? If not that the aforementioned companies absorb them, where do u think those STEM people will be working ?
In the real sense of things sef, STEM is like waste of time in this country because most of the graduates of STEM courses don't work in STEM related jobs. STEM allows you to work in all the fields you mentioned. A basic competence in Maths is guaranteed with STEM which is an element in all the jobs you highlighted and is what all those roles are looking for. Whereas with social sciences, you cannot guarantee any competence in Maths whatsoever. The only social science guys that are dextrous are lawyers and economists. Any other social science and your CV is going straight in the bin. Harsh reality of life. |

Masscom guys still need to drop out the tertiary education system sha Ibime: It's the set-up for increasing school fees. It's designed for low uptake. Especially in a country that cannot track its residents
Student loan is one of the worst performing loan types in Western countries, even when they can track their residents, so FG have written it in a way that fixes their liability to a manageable amount
The honest truth is tertiary education is not for everyone. Let the decision on going to university be a business decision. You will pay that money to study a STEM course, law, medicine etc but those Masscom guys need to find their square root into the jobs market than wasting time on a non value adding course. |

LordAdam16: First, the topic we're hashing out is the West's vindictive and ruthless MO relative to the East. In fact, in an earlier comment, you already conceded that the likes of Germany and the UK are not free speech absolutists because of their history. Durov's arrest is the latest example that the West is just as psychopathic as any rival power but glosses it up in suits and virtue signaling. When push comes to shove, the West will suppress dissent as harshly as Xi and Putin. Different methods, same outcome.
Section 230 repeal is a different kettle of fish. That is an intra-Western conflict. The liberals have a chokehold on mass media (from news to social networks). The conservatives are trying to break this stranglehold and have been unsuccessful. Another thinly-veiled attempt was the proposed TikTok ban under Trump. Many of you on the left opposed the ban until TikTok became a tool for pro-Palestinian activism.
Currently, the West is the Emperor without clothes The West destroyed a German-Russian pipeline and blamed Russia. You were an outspoken proponent of this narrative. That's just one of a litany of horrific examples of the West abusing its privilege.
Hell, the economic reasons for brownnosing the West is another letdown. As a % of GDP, remittance outflows from the UAE and Saudi Arabia exceed every major Western country. Indians run the UAE. Russia is the prime economic nerve center in the Caucasus. Eliminate the illegitimate Western economic warfare against the Global South and there'll be just as many Third World migrants in the Second World as in the First World.
When I see many of you go out of your way to talk up the West, especially while simultaneously dunking on the Second World, it betrays a lack of understanding of what is possible when the West is not allowed to run roughshod on the rest of the planet. It's the difference between being in a family with just one breadwinner versus another where multiple members have fat stacks. The West, for all its attractions, is a major disappointment. It is in all our best interests that its primacy is at the very least challenged.
-Lord I'm disappointed with this response. Stay on topic and stop flooding the topic with distractions about remittances and other unrelated issues. Can you explain what Section 230 is, and why Republicans tried to repeal it? Section 230 is a law that says that Tech companies are NOT RESPONSIBLE for what users post on their platform Republicans tried to dismantle it, and hold tech companies responsible for users post, and Google, Facebook, Twitter etc was dragged before the Senate where the Republican Senators (Ted Cruz and all your heroes) gave them a grilling and tried to repeal the law, thereby making tech companies liable for the nonsense Okpa or some nutcase types on their platform. So imagine my shock when you are holding France accountable for arresting Pavel for criminal activity on his platform - not for what is typed, but for him refusing to work with them to fish out criminal activity on his platform which is harming French society. And bearing in mind, that France has no Section 230 So do you support the repeal of Section 230 or not? |

Not everything is related to the miniscule things that concern you.
