That ball is coming at speed from a diagonal. To chip that ball, has high chance of skewing it.

A ball dropping at speed is usually met by a half-volley which is what he did. The only fault is he didn't volley back across goal to the other side where the ball is coming from

You can only argue he could have controlled it and then chip, but it's arguable that the defender or keeper would catch up to him if he controls
