Interest can be applied at the start or end of a period (daily, monthly, yearly). This is them taking it upfront to protect their returns, this secures their profit on the transaction regardless of early repayment of the principal. If they had set the interest calculation to end of the period and you pay off the loan after 1 month, they will only earn 1/12th of the 5% as profit. Mortgages work on the same principle (but without the upfront collection). The upfront collection is a Nigerian thing.
