Goke7: ok so martins senior mikel be that sefini, ogbeche senior enyeama be that. In Nigeria, in work places especially the civil service under which structure the eagles is being managed, seniority is by who go into the service earlier. Simple So are we saying that if Ogbeche makes the team he becomes the captain? |

I thought that after knowing our WC opponents our discussions and focus would shift in that line. But here we go again arguing over PRO and ANTI Martins. We have said every on that Let's leave Rohr to do the needful. |

Goke7: oh sorry I don't know that this was a bone of contention, I simply mean a player who came into the Eagles fold earlier, looks like both martins and mikel came in same time if I remember right? so based on that can we say who is actually more senior? Martins came in before Mikel. But Mikel has stayed longest in the team by virtue of his number of appearances. Martins has been on and off. But also Ogbeche came in before Enyeama and if Ogbeche makes the team who would you say is more Senior between him and Enyeama? |

Kog45: In football world there are terms we used that only us can interprete it and the term OLDEST used by GOKE7 was for longest serving player.
I did not need anybody to tell me that before i know what he was trying to say.
Truly he should have used longest but in this forum it's simple for us to understand.
I don't think we need to debate it cos it's common in our opened arguments we always says he is the oldest meaning longest.
Agreed on your point. Are you sure he didn't imply oldest by age? Goke7 oya come clear the air here. |

Do not worry Rohr will settled the matter soon,if martins made the team expect some to pray for Naija downfall and some we pray for goal drought for Iheanacho.
At the end of the day who to blame or who would carry the burdens,we fans, players after matches you see them in the night club chilling off but here we continue to deliberate on what went wrong, funny enough Martins and Iheanacho will be chilling together in far away Dubai on yacht.

goldfish80: Okocha was not a great captain. He was the main reason we failed to qualify for the 2006 world cup when refused playing away qualification games. This was a huge dent on his reputation as a good captain. He was better than Andrew Uwe. That is my point. |

Kog45: Keshi and Andrew Uwe remain the best despite their young age then, they carried the team very well, funny enough Uwe was in University of Ife and playing for Leventis United. Keshi yes but Andrew Uwe I dnt agree. We have had better captains than Uwe. Christian Chukwu, Okocha, Kanu, Yobo and even Mikel have displayed better captaincy than Uwe. Not also forgetting Sunday Oliseh. Andrew Uwe only featured for the Green Eagles from 1987 to 1990. I think he was part of the players affected by the Westerhoff's Tsunami. Other players like Henry Nwosu, Michael Onyemachara, Yisa Shofoluwe, Wole Odegbemi, Ndubuisi Okosieme were also swept out of the team. I am sure you know Andrew Uwe still played professional football up till the year 2000. |

Kog45: I don't understand, pls explain better cos my own assertion of longest player in a team started with the date of his debut.
I know Balogun is older but Echiejele,Onazi,Musa and Omeruo made their debuts before him, meaning they are the oldest.
In football the oldest not necessary player's age is longest serving player in the team Now you have brought in a third variable which is "debut date". Now we have: 1. Age of player (which is where the phrase of "Oldest player" comes in) 2. Period of service (which "may' be measured by number of appearances. Also "longest serving" player) 3. Debut date As you rightly said in your earlier post a lot of things come into play including discipline and leadership abilities. The 3 points highlighted above, I don't need to explain one after the other cos I know we all understand what they mean. A player like Bartholomew Ogbeche made his debut before Enyeama. If he gets invited like joebie is clamoring for and he makes the final world cup team, would you classify him as the oldest player, longest serving player or what? Fact is he would not be the oldest player neither would he be the longest serving player. He is just the player with the oldest debut. And is that enough for him to be made captain? I am sure your answer in no. But I understand you. You are looking at oldest player in terms of longest servicing which may be ambiguous if stated that way. |

Kog45: Gok man good you said culture which mean we have imbibed it but not written rules.
The captain of a team can only be decided by a coach, comes tomorrow if Rohr said Mikel is no longer the captain that's it.Remember old Musa was removed as vice captain for younger Onazi, mind you Echiejele is still in the team
When Rohr was appointed the first thing he said was Mikel remain my captain just to set the record straight that am not ready to appoint another captain.
Let's go down to memory lane a bit on eagles captain, hope you still remember afcon 1984 Muda Lawal was the oldest with 4 afcon appearance but young Keshi was the captain.
Paul Hamilton made Andrew Uwe his captain at the despite having older players like Peter Rufai, Henry Nwosu,Ademola Adeshina even when Keshi came back fully during afcon and Olympics qualifiers in 1987,Andrew Uwe was still the captain
Hope you remember how Alloy Agu captain the team during early Westerhoff era with the presence of Ademola Adeshina,Andrew Uwe,Rasheed Yekini.
There was never a time Enyeama captain Eagles with the presence of Joseph Yobo in camp.Enyeama only captain the team on the field if Yobo find himself on the bench and this happened at Afcon 2013,this made Enyeama to handover captain band to him in the final to collect the cup.
The same scenario played itself at Tunisia 94 when Austin Eguavoen handed over captain band to Keshi after final game to collect the cup.
Remember Sunday Olishe was made the captain at the expense of older Finidi George 2000-2002 and no issue on it.
It was only Chuckwu(1980)Keshi(1990-1994)Austin Okocha(2002-2006)Kanu (2006-2010)Yobo(2010-2014)Enyeama (2014-2016)now Mikel, these are the beneficiaries of oldest being the captain.
My man it all depends on coaches decision cos a lot of things are put into consideration before a captain of the team is chosen. Yes a lot of things come into play. And as u rightly pointed age is not the single determining factor. Some players are natural leaders both on and off the pitch. He may not be the oldest but he must have spent some appreciable time in the team. For eg no one is expecting players like Ebuehi, Idowu, Aina or Onyekuru to be Eagles captain next year. Not even in 2 years time. Apart from time spent with the national team some players are natural motivators on the pitch. Some are naturally disciplined. Some relate better with the FA officials than others. A player like Victor Moses has spent almost same considerable period of time as Onazi and Echiejile but has never been considered as an assistant captain option? Why? Moses comes to me as an arrogant person. His level of diplomacy is not something to be admired. He cannot lead the Eagles else there would be several clashes between him and many state holders. Stuff like that. Keshi like you rightly mentioned became a captain at an early age. Why he is a natural leader. That why he is called "The Boss". His and Andrew Uweh's captaincy are part of a few exceptions. |

Goke7: It's a longstanding culture in the eagles for the oldest player to be captain and undisputed leader in the team, mikel can never be captain with an enyeama in the team. The older players have always been disruptive in our national teams or you think a mikel can set the rules for martins?
It's not a joke o! It has cost us real problems in the past world cups and afcon tournaments. You think all was well in the camp when yobo was present and enyeama was captain? Have you forgotten how enyeama quickly handed over the afcon trophy to yobo in 2013.
We can't simply afford those distractions in the world cup with the group we are in. Our players are not oyinbos for Christ sake despite playing in europe, na thick african blood dem get where seniority na big matter It is not necessarily the oldest player but more like the longest serving player. For eg if Martins is called back and makes the world cup, Yes he is older but, Mikel will definitely captain the team. Even if Enyeama returns and makes it to the world cup, it is still logical for Mikel to be captain as he has spent more time with this current crop than Enyeama. Mikel is the indisputable leader of this crop both on and off the pitch. Segun Odegbami predicted Yobo and Mikel to be captains of the Super Eagles in their respective times and these have come to pass. |

So, if dem no put Martins as CF, nothing for the team? Some people no know say we no dey 1997 again, we need players that are in 2017 please, not all those old system players You sure understand the structure of this team. One major strength of this team is the versatility of over 90% of the players. The only 2 major starters I know can only play in one position are Troost-Ekong and Ighalo. nelszx: Sometimes you give the young time to grow same way Enyeama was given his in 2002. Who knew Enyeama before the England game? With much exposure they'd improve and with the defence shielding them you won't even notice them (a typical example is Uzoho). The defenders shielded him and there wasn't direct play to him Enyeama was not first choice. The England game was just a dead rubber for us. Nothing at stake. We need a good and experienced goalie for the WC. I am not totally discarding the young goalies. But they cannot be first choice. If Enyeama will not be available let Ezenwa be first choice then. |

Questence: If we play 3-5-2
Moses is going to partner upfront with Ighalo (or whoever strikes)
Because we would be rendering ourselves a disservice to use Moses as wing back. We would starve ourselves of Moses usefulness upfront and Ebuehi's defensive/attacking guile.
This is our best 3-5-2 formation IMO
------------Awaziem----Ekong----Balogun----------------
Ebuehi--------Onazi-------------Ndidi---------------Idowu
-----------------------Mikel---------------------------------
Moses Ighalo
This is a terror squad.
Ebuehi is fast. HE recovers fast to help defensively and he overlaps very well in the attack. He even delivered a sweet cross to Iheanacho which the latter did not convert.
Moses will terrorize the opponent with speed and dribbles on the counter.
Bryan Idowu is a good set piece taker and he also knows how to score.
Iwobi/Simon/Onyekuru can come in for Moses later in the game when we have a comfortable lead or if we have to switch back to 4-3-3
Ighalo will perform better than Iheanacho as a target man. He will pose problem to his defenders. Him and Moses will be a deadly combo.
Overall this is a defensive formation. Even our strikers (Moses, Ighalo) can defend. Even teams like Germany would find us hard to break if we sit and defend like against Germany while we slaughter them on the counter if they are not careful. All these starting line up you guys are rolling out here, is it not too early? |
