If we try to free our minds of bias we will understand this FIFA ranking thing more.
International friendlies carry 1point while for African teams WC qualifiers carry 2.5 points. Meanwhile some teams won their WC qualifying games while we drew. The Argentina game carried only 1 point there is no way you can rise above teams like Senegal that won 2 WC qualifiers games. Morocco beat CIV, Burkina Faso and DR Congo also recorded wins. These are the teams that gained points and then moved there positions up. In other parts of the world teams like Australia, Sweden, Peru won WC qualifying games. But we drew. How do you expect us to move above them.
We dropped 9places because we failed to beat Algeria. |

BascoVanVeli: It is deeper than rankings this is how I feel about FIFA in general. I am sorry I just can't believe a draw v Algeria should naturally drop us so low, what if we had lost, 72? This ranking system is totally flawed, we are rewarding Cameroon for being crap ever since the AFCON. If you cannot beat a team ranked over 20 places below you there is no way your ranking points will rise. Argentina lost 97points for the loss to Nigeria, even though they won their last S/American qualifiers and beat Russia. |

mank1234: Report had it that Switzerland prior to 2014 draw hired a consultant to advice them on how to improve their ranking. They went up to 6th position and were seeded. But they still had to win the big games to rise. One major concern I have concerning our ranking is the home based Eagles. The other time we beat Cameroon 4-0 and drew 1-1 away and were expecting to move up the ladder only for the CHAN team to lose to lowly Benin and our ranking dropped instead of improving. Now CHAN is in January - February. And looking at the lowly rated teams in our group hope our ranking will not plumate further if we fail to win all 3 group matches? |

Please kindly give us the reason why Cameroun rose,...I am eager to hear I thought he only mentioned Wales and Poland. I never saw Cameroon. Well but since you mentioned it. Cameroon did not rise. They dropped 3 places. No thanks to the Zambia draw. Their ranking points dropped from 718 to 696. Nigeria only dropped further than Cameroon. Cameroon also dropped. |

I fear France,Brazil and Spain more than anything...how i wish Ghana had qualified...they 're good in beating some of this European and south America teams... Name the European and South American teams Ghana has ever beaten. Friendlies inclusive. And do same for Nigeria. |

Napoleon55: the way to improve on FIFA ranking is to make use of every window for friendlies, and make sure never to play any team ranked lower than us. there are some of this countries in top 10 we can beat. In that case top 10 teams would not want to play us because they know we are better than our ranking and any loss to us and they drop points. Argentina lost almost 100points in the latest ranking. |

BascoVanVeli: Oga I don't say stuff like this and I stand to be corrected but I just personally feel FIFA is a racist organization. The Argentina that we are talking about had 3 draws in a row against lesser competition. Argentina's ranking points dropped from 1445 to 1348. They retained their 4th position because the 5th placed team which is Belgium were 112 points behind. So Argentina did not lose enough points to drop from 4th position. You guys should not only look at the position look also at the ranking points. It is the ranking points that determine the positions. |

nelszx: If we are to use the ranking of the last 4 years then Poland shouldn't be in the top 10 neither should Wales be among the top 20s. True over the past 2 years the only matches we lost was away to Egypt and a home defeat to SA not like we were on a free fall. I still don't get why our draw to Algeria would mean we'd fall down the ranking. Cameroon ranked above us drew to a Zambian teams that are 30 spaces below them but were not on a free fall. Fifa shouldn't use an accumulated year to rank but the year in review. From September 2016 till date Nigeria has 5 wins 4 draws and a defeat in the 10 games played. They maximised their points from the European games which carry more points than African games. Mind you Wales got to the semis of the last Euros. |

Icon79: So I was just thinking last night how a country like Poland (and to some extent Portugal) played and manipulated the FIFA ranking game to find themselves in the pot 1. This something we could discuss here and make some recommendations to the NFF regarding the 2022 World Cup. I mean, Poland has shown that you can game the system and that's not cheating .... it's called gaining a competitive edge
Anyway, let's put on our thinking caps on and come up with ways we can make FIFA ranking work for the Super Eagles going forward.
Mickael2, Junnyjake, Kog45, MetalJigsaw, elyte89, Icon4s, Mujtahida, tbaba1234, Joebie, goodjoe, Taliban, forgiveness, komekn, ChrisKels, Chrismario, kennysville, kingphilip, soetanoreoluwa, safarigirl, chrisooblog, optional1, Napoleon55, realpoacher, jotey, sontoly, Daejoyoung, nelszx, etc.
O pari You and I know that if we face Poland in a competitive game it is not likely they defeat us. In fact it is either we beat them or the game ends in a draw. What a team like Poland benefitted from is playing against teams that are highly ranked. Get a couple of victories in the WC qualifiers in Europe and you see your points jump. Besides, games involving UEFA and South American teams in WC qualifiers carry more weight than those of Africa and Asia. Two major setbacks for African teams are: 1. Our results don't carry as much weight as those of Europe and S/America. 2. Most African teams have poor rankings. So if you like beat Cameroon 4-0 and Zambia 6-0. You just make little progress. And worse still if you lose or draw with any of those poorly ranked African teams u see your points come crashing. By and large I think the major opportunity we have towards having good seeding for the 2022 WC is to perform very well in the 2018 WC. The WC results carry the heaviest weights of 4points! If we can beat at least 2 of any of those teams ranked in Pot1 it would really be a good booster for us. And if we can follow it up with winning our remaining 2019 AFCON qualifiers and also winning the 2019 AFCON. We also need to follow it up with at least an excellent showing at the 2021 AFCON. 2022 WC draws would be made around December 2021. It means results of 2018 WC down to late 2021 would be part of the factors in the ranking points (FIFA uses results from the last 4years). To be realistic, that Pot1 would be difficult for any African team. Even from my analysis above we may just be in pot2. |

realpoacher: I repeat and stand by my earlier position. From my calculations deducted from FIFA website, the Algerian and Argentina matches added points to us. Algeria's result was in positive not negative. The reason why we dropped was from the weight of our four year rankings. Our fourth year in particular in this regards. Fifa score you 1 match point for a draw times 2.5 for the competition weight, I wonder where you guys keep bringing the -Ives from in draw matches when in actual sense the -ive we experienced is from our fourth year dead rankings multiplied by 0.2 Here you go again. It is not simple straight arithmetic calculation. We lost over 70points from that Algeria draw. The Argentina win redeemed us a bit. Maybe na 60th position we for find ourselves. When you draw or lose to a team that is less than you in ranking. It will negate your points. The further the team is behind you the more the deduction. Algeria were about 20 places behind us. You draw with such a team and you get a massive deduction. It was a case of 3 steps backwards and 1 step forwards for us. Or more precisely 70 points deduction and 20 points addition. The Algeria game carried 2.5 points while the Argentina game carried only 1 point. cc: Bascovanveli |

It's never 1 + 1 = 2. A lot of other parameters are in play.
We tried explaining to the young man, but he was all high on the excitement of the win. Him bubble go don burst by now.
Had we qualified for those 2 AFCON editions we missed, we'd have had the opportunity to build on our position as 36th (not too sure) Thank you. We didn't even make the last 2 editions of the AFCON. The rankings are done over a 4 year period not just 2017. |

junnyjake: Hehehehe, and some were expecting us to climb up to the 25th position. The FIFA ranking is not as easy as 1+1=2. It is a 4year ranking. Just one win in an international friendly that doesn't carry much weight in the ranking is not enough to cause that kind of leap. The result against Algeria matters more. Let us beat Argentina again in the WC and you'll see the leap. |

The Argentina friendly carried just 1point while the Algeria game carried 2.5. Thank God we played that Argentina friendly it raised us a little cos after that Algeria draw our ranking points dropped from 721 to around 650. The Argentina win brought it up back to 670. |

By James Agberebi: Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has set aside Saturday, December 16, 2017 as the date for the launch of his new orphanage in Lagos, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Chima-based Ighalo confirmed the date on his verified Twitter handle on Wednesday.
Last year, Ighalo revealed he planned to open his own orphanage to help the needy.
He was also posting pictures of the orphanage during construction stages on his social media accounts.
And on Tuesday, a press conference was held in Lagos to brief the public about plans concerning the unveiling of the orphanage.
https://i1.wp.com/www.completesportsnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/IMG_20171122_113319-400x286.jpg?resize=400%2C286&ssl=1
Present at the conference were former Nigeria internationals Peter Rufai, Samson Siasia and Austin Eguavoen and also ex-Super Falcons goalkeeper Ann Chiejine.
“Launch date is 16th of December 2017 you are all invited,” Ighalo wrote on his Twitter handle, with pictutes of the completed buildings of the orphanage.
The pictures show one big, one-storey building with artwork in the front of the top floor depicting Ighalo in his traditional goal celebration of kneeling down and raising his hands to the heavens. ‘God is able’ is boldly inscribed under the image of Ighalo.
There is what looks like another one-storey building behind the main one, both looking big enough to comfortably accommodate scores of children.

The orphanage is located in Ijegun, a relatively newly developed, but highly populated part of Lagos in the Ikotun area, where there is not much affluence.
Ighalo helped the Super Eagles secure the sole ticket in Group B for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. God bless you Odion. |

Am sure he actually meant to say the first coach to beat Argies main Team... Bros, a win is a win. Who send them to present a B team. They were beaten 4-1 and that record will remain in the history books for life. in 20years time when people see that result they will not see it as Nigerian Vs Argentina (B) . |

Meanwhile, I just watched Okocha's testimonial match and the guy was doing wonders. Methink we look in his direction to fortify the midfield. We should also go and beg Baba God to release Rashidi Yekini for us just for the world cup. |

Mujtahida: I feel our team is not balanced. We play more to the right than to the left. Fact is we have too many right footed players than left footed players in this team. As a nation we seem to be predominantly right footed hence our difficulties in producing LB and LWF. Since Amunike I'm not sure we've had a natural LWF. An analysis by Solace Chukwu on medium (@oddsolace you guys can check him out) posits that 8 out of 12 goals scored during the WCQ (he wrote this before our last WCQ against Algeria) came as a result of build up from the right flank, 2 from the middle and two from the left. This is not too healthy in my estimation. Yes a team should play to its strength but at the same time our strength is too obvious and that can possibly make it easy for tactically astute teams to dismantle us
Please let's analyse this issue Cc Mickael2, Kog45, MetalJigsaw, elyte89, Icon4s, tbaba1234, Joebie, goodjoe, Taliban, forgiveness, komekn, ChrisKels, Chrismario, kennysville, kingphilip, soetanoreoluwa, safarigirl, Icon79, Napoleon55, realpoacher, jotey, sontoly, Daejoyoung, nelszx, somehow and all on this thread Firstly, this is a team on a transition path. It takes time for equilibrium to be achieved in the different segments of the team. Secondly, it is normal for teams to maximize their area of key strength and for us it is the right wing of the attack. Even a left footed forward like Iheanacho scores over 90% of his goals from the right position with his left foot. Watch all the goals we scored from open play against Argentina the attacks came from the right. Thirdly, there are no much quality LBs compared to RB in the world generally. That Argentine player that played LB against Nigeria, if he was Nigerian that would be his last game for us. All the attacks that led to all our goals from open play came from his territory. Fourthly, the world is generally is lack of quality left footed players. And the few quality ones are played on the right. That is where they are most deadly. I don't see that as a problem. We just have to maximize that strength. And also some times we can start one of RWF from the left just to destabilize our opponents. A case in time was starting Tijani Babangida from the left of attack against SA at the 2000 AFCON. SA were 2 goals down in 17mins or so. |
