Omeruo

Nigeria defender Kenneth Omeruo has extended his contract at Chelsea for another year till June 2019.

“So excited to renew my contract at Chelsea,” announced Omeruo, whose initial contract still had two more years to run.

However, he is expected to finalise a loan move before transfer deadline Wednesday night.

It is understood Omeruo will return to Turkey on loan from Chelsea with Alanyaspor and Gaziantepsor the front runners for his signature after a proposed move to champions Besiktas collapsed.

This will be the fourth club he will be loaned out to.

The 22-year-old central defender has already played on loan from Chelsea at Dutch club ADO Den Haag, Middlesbrough as well as Turkish club Kasimpasa.

Alanyaspor are featuring in the Turkish Super Lig this season after they won promotion from the lower league.

Another Turkish club Osmanlispor are also keen to sign Omeruo on a season-long loan, but it seems they will a longs shot.

They already have Nigeria forward Umar Aminu and have qualified for the group stage of this season’s UEFA Europa League.

When will they stop loaning this guy out?

I just knew you would go to the bashing. I could feel it coming. Nigerians never forgave him for that game but it was not the young man's fault.

After Azubuike Oliseh's suspension, we did not have anyone shielding the defence. Iyenemi Furo also had a terrible game that day. Gbenga Okunowo aka Barca Boy was also poor that day.

Etafia kept his way to a very high level. Making great saves even the the CAF Champions League with Lobi Stars.

He was very good but that flogging spoilt his image in Nigerians mind. I still believe he belongs in the list because he was a genuine contender for the Super Eagles goalkeeper role.
Hmmm.. u just mentioned another forgotten player. Furo Iyeneme. So very unpredictable. In a game he could pose a MOM performance and the next game You would feel like chopping-off his head. He also reminds me of Isaac Okoronkwo who was also in that team as a CB partner with Furo. Both CBs were off and on players. If those they chose to be off we could concede terribly. Just look at our results in that tourney and you'll also understand why Greg Etafia fell out of favor:

Nigeria 3-3 Honduras (We came from 3-1 down to equalize. Goals from Bright Igbinadalor, Victor Agali and Yakubu Aiyegbeni hu scored the equalizer with almost the last kick of the game)
Nigeria 3-2 Australia (Goals from Pius Ikedia, Julius Aghahowa and Victor Agali)
Nigeria 1-1 Italy (Goal scored by Garba Lawal before Gbenga Okunowo of Barcelona scored an own to make it 1-1)
Nigeria 0-4 Chile.

Azubuike Oliseh was a key man in the DMF in that team. I recall the over-aged players were Godwin Okpara and Garba Lawal. Celestine Babayaro was captain. Sam Okoye was a substitute goalie in that team.

I was so disappointed in the team all through the tourney.

TheGoodJoe:

I try explaining to people that what we see now, talents emerging in Nigeria like Ekong, Awaziem, Balogun, Ndidi, Chidebere Nwakali etc, was always like this in the past

When you think of Ibeji, Abubakar Musa not getting into people's mind for the National team, despite repeated brilliance performances, you could tell the competition.

People did not think of Ebiede despite him being more of a Cult hero in Port-Harcourt. The media hardly mentioned him until his training game in Shell Camp Port-Harcourt.

When you think of Ikedia and Tijani Babangida, fighting for the same spot in the Super Eagles. Yet, there was a legend, Finidi George in the same team.
That is the point have also been making. I usually shake my head when I see people say "This is a Super Golden Generation".
Remember my earliest arguments with you guys here? I have seen quality young players come and go. I have seen players that were better than Iheanacho and Success and that flopped as they grew older. In the 1990s, Nigeria could comfortably produce 3 parallel teams that could emerge 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the AFCON.

To break into the Super Eagles starting 11 was like breaking into the current Barcelona starting 11.
Tijani Babangida was so good yet he was a sub in the Super Eagles. All the likes of Mutiu Adepoju, Samson Siasia were subs. Okocha was a sub at the 1994 WC. Amuneke was a sub at the 1994 AFCON.

From late 1990s up to early 2000s Nigeria kept producing multiple talented players; Agali, Aghahowa, Ikedia, Ayegbeni, Odemwingie, Martins, Yobo, Utaka, Obodo, Ogbeche, but a good number (most of them fell short as they progressed age-wise). Only Yobo, Martins, and Odemwingie for me managed to weather through the strom and made names for themselves.

And from trends that I have observed usually have have eras where we will just have a certain cluster of players emerging at the same time and our hopes would be raised only to be dashed again. It has happened over and over.

The 1980 winning squad came mostly ayers from Enugu Rangers and IICC (3SC) that well at CAF Competition in the late 1970s. That green Eagles squad won Bronze at 1978 AFCON and then Gold at 1980 AFCON. Players like Segun Odegbami, Chrsitian Chukwu, The Okala brothers, Tunde Bamidele, Okey Esima, Best Ogedemgbe, Adokiye Amesimaka, Muda Lawal and the others come to mind.

However, I have followed the trend since Nigeria's exploits at Youth competitions. Most of the products of our Youths System don't end up well.

The first Golden era of our youth development was in the 1980s (from 1983 to 1989). Ow! Nigeria produced a million stars that even Pele predicted an African team would win the world cup before the end of that century. The Golden Eaglets classes of 1985, 87 and 89 were so talented and ruthless but a handful of them made it to the Super Eagles. Notably: Nduka Ugbade, Victor Ikpeba, Godwin Okpara, Jonathan Akpoborie. None from my beloved 1987 Eaglets even made it big. Samson Siasia, Ndubuisi Okesieme, Moday Odiaka, Mutiu Adepoju were amongst those that were discovered from the U21s. Okesieme and Idiaka only featured at Maros '88. Siasia and Adepoju were not starters in the 1990s Super Eagles Teams.

Another generation of youngsters emerged from the 1993 Eaglets and Flying Eagles. From Flying Eagles: J.J Okocha, Taribo West, Tijani Babangida, among others. They were joined by there younger Eaglets players like: Kanu Nwankwo, Celestine Babayaro, Wilson Oruma, Karibe Ojigwe, Mubi Okparaku. This crop was joined by other young players at that time like: Emmanuel Amuneke, Daniel Amokachi, Sunday Oliseh. They were now blended with some of the lasts of the 1980s generation like Rashidi Yekini, Stephen Keshi, Thompson Oliha, Peter Rufai, Uche Okechukwu , Ben Iroha among others. That was what led to that our Super Dominance in the 1990s.

When Nigeria's problem started was when we could not produce any formidable youths team from 1995 until 1999. This meant that the 1990s Eagles never had competitors or replacements until the likes of Julius Aghahowa, Pius Ikedia, Joseph Yobo, Victor Agali, Yakubu Ayegbeni all started emerging from 1999 WYC and 2000 Olympics. There was a great gap! Ike Soroumu for instances handed over to young Enyeama and Ejide. Victor Ikpeba left a big shoe for Victor Agali and Julius Aghahowa to fill. Ayegbeni was more used as an AM/ WF then. Others like Chukwu Ndukwe came and did their part and left with little or no impact.

The 1999 WYC and 2000 Olympics boys formed the nucleus of our team of much of the 2000s. This was a new era.
Ayegbeni, Aghhowa, Ikedia, Yobo, Enyeama, Ejide, and others were joined by talented players like: Christian Obodo, Osaze Odemwingie, Chidi Odiah, John Utaka. By then Okocha, Kanu and Oruma had become the senior players in the Team. Mikel Obi and Taye Taiwo joined that crop in 2006 and 2005 respectively. That team to me was the last Super Egales squad we had. The squad was later joined by Onyekachi Apam, Dele Adeleye, Sani Keita among others. This crop were products of our youths system from 2003 to 2008. The plane moving that squad crashed at the 2010 WC. Siasia only came on board in 2010-2011 to revive the already dead team but he failed.

The next era came with Stephen Keshi as coach. By this time the players of mid-late 2000 were already senior boys namely: Yobo, Odemwingie and Mikel. Keshi pick up some boys from our youths system of late 2000s up till Early 2010s and some form the local league. Elderson Echiejile, Ahmed Musa, Ogenyi Onazi, Uche Nwofor, Nnamdi Oduamadi, Nosa Igeibor, Brown Ideye, Efe Ambrose, Kenneth Omeruo - all products of our youths teams from 2007 to 2012 had their chance in the Super Eagles. They were joined by older boys like Mikel and Yobo plus other imvitees like Emenike, Mba, Obaobona among others. The team won the AFCON and got to the WC 2nd round but came crashing down months after.

A new era is here. Prominent are players from youth Teams from 2009 to 2015. Although some will say the new era is from 2013. I lump from 2009 because a good number of the players who played 2009 U17, 2011 U20 and 2013 U20 are still emerging. The 2013 and 2015 U17 teams have given us quality talented players but they still have to compete with their older companions from the 2009 U20 and 2011 and 2013 Flying Eagles. Eg Omeruo and Onazi were part of the 2009 U17 and are still very much in the thick of things, Ahmed Musa featured at the 2011 WYC, Simon Moses, and Wilfred Ndidi featured at the 2013 U20. Imoh Ezekiel was invited for the 2013 WYC but was not released by his club. The younger crop of this generation are the likes of Iheanacho, Success, K. Nwakali, Victor Osimhen and Alex Iwobi. Sadiq Umar, Azubuike Okechukwu, Troost-Ekong,Stanley Amuzie are still very much in thick of things for this generation.

Now, my question is; Is this generation better than the clusters we had from 1983 to 1989, 1993, 1999-2000, and 2001 to 2007?

I don't think so. Let us just be watching and hope we get things right this time.

Add Greg Etafia to the list. That guy was a fine keeper. Brilliant in the post.
When I remember Greg Etafia, I remember that 4-0 bashing by Chile at Sydney 2000 Olympucs. Ivan Zamorano and Salas wan kill naija.
Etafia was good but he was not as composed as Sam Okoye and Vincent Enyeama. Etafia was more like Austine Ejide.

Emmanuel Babayaro, certainly in the list of Nigerian players that fell off. So much promise and leadership. Same goes to Abiodun Baruwa. I remember Babayaro injuring in Harare and Abiodun Baruwa coming in and saving all three penalties.

I watched a CAF Champions League game of Baruwa saving three penalties while he was at a South African club.

I was unfortunate not to watch Ebiede but his influence in the game of Football in Port-Harcourt was massive. He had followers who tried playing like him. He was a master at spraying passes using his outer foot like Rosicky.

I did not watch him when he was young. I actually only watched him once in a training game in 2001. When Super Eagles was to play Ghana at Liberation stadium Port-Harcourt.

I will later upload one or two warm up pictures.

In that training game, Ebiede was on fire. Come and see dribbling. Catching Taribo and Uche. I understood why he got the nickname waist breaker. That was one talent I missed out watching.

Funny part is that I was in Port-Harcourt when he was young.
Emmanuel Ebiede had his chance at the 1995 AYC held in Nigeria. He came out average. More so he was a local champion when the likes of Kanu, Ikpeba,;Okocha, Amuneke, Amokachi, Babayaro, Oruma, Oliseh, Finidi, Babangida, Taribo and co were doing well in Europe. So no one gave him a chance in d national team

I just had to comment when I saw you mention the name Kelechi Osunwa. He used to be a handy striker for Dolphins. When he left for Sudan, I honestly thought it was a stop-gap move for him but its unfortunate he couldn't find his way out from there as quickly as possible. Last I heard any news about him was Sudan offering him citizenship to represent them, I guess that process didn't work out because he has already had a few caps for Nigeria.

The Nigerian league within a short period lost its best players to clubs in Sudan. Guys Like Osunwa, Eze, efosa eguakun, Endurance Idaho(Rip) and later Steve Nworgu. These four guys easily would have walked into the National team had they been playing in Europe.
It's worthy of note, they played in an era we had below average players like Abbey George, Ifeanyi Ekwueme and the likes held sway.

I wept bitterly when I heard of Endurance Idaho's demise. I remember the blinder of a goal he scored in the cAf winners cup finals against Etoile du Sahel, which was nominated on the Caf goal of the year. Julis Berger lost the return leg in Souse when my hood guy Ogochukwu obiakor scored a brace in the 3:0 reverse.
Of the Idaho brothers, Endurance was the pick of the pack. Unfortunately, he never made it to Europe but instead died right there on the pitch in Sudan. What an enigma.

Another I would like to mention is Binagwari(spellling) George (Rip), Finidi gorges younger brother was another prodigiously talented footballer. While coming up, many people who saw him rated him highly. He was far more skillful than Finidi will ever be. He went past people like they were training cones. He died while trying out for a club in Europe. However. He was quite behold to watch durring his short career.

Finally, one of the best goalies to have ever graced the Nigerian league but never played for the super eagles, the enigma himself, Sam okoye. He was between the sticks for the flying eagles at Nigeria 99.
The story was that a young Vincent Enyeama then playing for Ibom stars attended the Nigeria 99 tryouts. While in camp, he simply packed his bags and suit cases when Sam okoye arrived.
Okoye was like the love child of Oliver Khan/Jose chilavette, he could dribble, pass and start attacks from his position as a GK. Pep Guardiola would have loved him certainly. By a country mile, he was the best goalie in the league.
There was a particular league game he scored from his own half of the pitch. He was insanely talented

It was heart breaking when he died while trying out for a club in Iran. Am still puzzled till date what exactly made him take the decision to leave for Iran. Many people believed it was out of frustration, having seen guys like Etafia, Enyeama and Ejide who he was a good few yards ahead of, getting call ups to the national team while he was ignored.
Alot of league watchers were left scratching their heads each time Sam okoye was passed over by Christian chukwu and Eguavoen.

Thank God the Nigerian league is being gradually repositioned. A lot of our best players over the years died mysterious deaths on their pursuit for greener pastures in obscure countries.
Rip Sam okoye and the rest of them.
Good memory of players from that era.

Did you mean Igineware George, a former youth international and brother to Finidi George? He was killed by irate 3SC fans when Enugu Rangers went to play a league game in Ibadan.

U also just reminded me of that player called Endurance Idaho. I think he played for either Julius Berger or Dolphins or both. A great talent.

Talking about Sam Okoye. At that U20 he was like a wall. So very solid. Ike Shoroumu was Nigeria's number1 goalie up to 2002. I see no reason y Enyeama and Ejide were invited ahead of Okoye. Okoye was at Enugu Rangers, Enyeama was at Enyimba and Ejide was at Etoile Du Sahel. These 3 guys were the best in our land at that time and Okoye as at then was ahead of them . Enyeama and Ejide progressed more while Okoye was stagnated until he went to the middle east where he died.

Did you get to watch any of Emmanuel Ebiede's games with Sharks under Coach Sinclair.
Ah. Just like asking a youth of today if he followed Junior Ajayi when he was at 3SC.

The first time I knew Emmanuel Ebiede was when he featured at the 1995 AYC. He was one of two players that were really hyped going into that tourney. The other player was Olumide Haris-highest goal scorer in the Nigerian league then.

I never followed Ebiede at club level when e be say players like Kanu, Ikpeba, Amuneke, Amokachi, Finidi, Babayaro, Oruma and d likes were doing wonders in Europe.

As I said before it is just like asking a youth of today if he followed Junior Ajayi or Etebo at Warri wolves when all attention were on Iheanacho, Ighalo, Success, Iwobi, Musa and co hu are blazing the trails in Europe.

As at mid 90s a lot of people, especially the youth, had started shifting interest to European leagues already.

I only followed d local league in the late 80s up to may be early 90s. In fact u just reminded me now that Ebiede played for sharks and Monday Sinclair was the coach then. I was then more conversant with clubs and players around Lagos. E.g. ACB, stationery stores, Julius Berger,,New Nigerian Bank, Leventis. I also loved Iwuanyawu nationale because it was then my home state club.

Emmanuel Babayaro was number 1 GK in 1993 U17. He was also number one of the Olympics team in Harare '95 all African games until he injured. Then Abiodun Baruwa replaced him.
Yeah . Must have been a Mix up. But I think Emma OKhenoboh was in goal in that final against Ghana. Not so sure though.

Hey, seems you really watched football in the oldies. Got a question for you: an elderly man once told me that eventhough Okocha was a master dribbler and someone that brings tricks out of nowhere, there are a few players that beat him in the 'skills' department in the oldies. And that the reason we dont know them is because their matches were not recorded. He said they were super creative with balls. Will you agree with that? And if yes, who are those players?
Question directed to Syenite = icon4s. wink

Okocha to me remains the best creative midfielder we have ever had.

Midfielders that came close were Etim Esin and Henry Nwosu. I watched Esin and Nwosu play in the 1980s, but Okocha was better than them.

You guys also chose to frustrate Coach Oliseh by starving his boys at the CHAN, setting him to play in a venue he did not want to play in. Owing Coach Oliseh etc.

You guys brought Coach Siasia to save what you guys damaged at the AFCON. With Niger pulling out, we could not qualify.

Leave Coach Siasia out of the AFCON failure. It was beyond him.
Don't mind those bunch of clueless clowns angry

The thunder wey go fire those NFF pipo don dey warm up.

sir icon4s no doubt sadiq has room for improvement in his game but i'm just surprised at the amount of criticism the boy is getting.

that's why i called it beef. take for example imoh ezekiel didn't score a single goal yet he is fantastic, super eagles quality. sadiq scored 4 times yet he should stay far away from the senior national team 'he scored 4 times so what is he not a professional?'. sadiq was poor against germany 'o he's rubbish the most useless player that ever liveth' imoh ezekiel too didn't do much against the germans o yet deafening silence. against honduras sadiq scored twice 'o he was wasteful why didn't he score more so the game would have been put to bed?' as if he's also the defender that allowed the hondurans to score. imoh ezekiel despite numerous chances against the customer dada ni defence of honduras couldn't score yet he is praised.

different styles or not good players are good players. lewandowski is not as skilful as messi or as fast as ronaldo but the guy na goal king. who style don epp? no be to put goal for net be the main issue?
In case of Imoh Ezekiel, we all know his primary duty was not the Centre Forward role but you know how offensive he was on the wings. He was involved in nearly 50% of our goals in this tourney. Recall Sadiq's first goal against Japan came off from a rebound from his short. He also made the cross for Etebo's first goal to make it 2-1 against Japan. I would join them in saying Imoh is ripe for the Super Eagles but Sadiq is not.

corperscorner:
News have been making rounds as regards the gift bestowed upon the coach and captain of the Super eagles for attaining the 'bronze feat'. It was observed that the Sports Minister who had perfectly been behind the scenes the entire time, suddenly surfaces on the media to take pictures with the foreign billionaire while smiling uncontrollably at the cheque being presented to coach Siasia and captain Mikel Obi.

An internal source revealed that there were some deliberations as regards remitting the gift to the Treasury Single Account or using the sum to fund the next olympic trip. As anyone would guess, this information did not go down well with coach Siasia and captain Mikel Obi. Team mates however disclosed that the duo had been noticed to keeping aloof and steering clear off the entire team after receiving the $390,000 gift.

Reliable sources have however confirmed the disappearance of coach Samson Siasia and captain Mikel Obi who are both suspected to have disappeared via a private jet that was hired by Mikel Obi's personal assistant. We believe he has headed back to his home abroad while the location of coach Siasia is currently unknown.

In light of this latest development, Solomon Dalung; also know as the red-berret-wearing-orangutan, has declared both parties wanted.

Kindly stay tuned for more updates. grin

men the kind of beef sadiq is getting lipsrsealed all this after scoring 4 goals o even though this is his first proper tournament football. someone who aside 2 or 3 seria A matches has been playing youth football. just because he (along with their favourites o) didn't perform magic against the germans. the same germans most of the overhyped brazilians players couldn't score against if not for the magic of neymar.

sadiq is not too far from the super eagles should just keep his head down, work hard and improve his game.
My brother it is no beef. The thing is different people like different strikers for different reasons.

Taking our minds back to Rashidi Yekini era. Though he was regarded as the African King of goals, but, there were people who still did not like Yekini's style. They so much for instance commonised his goal against Bulgaria at the 1994 world cup; referring it as a mere tap-in. They hailed Amokachi more who made the assist. Yekini was not much of a skillful and smart movement striker but he sure knew where the back of the net was. May His Soul Rest in Peace.

Sadiq Umar for me did creditably well.
He just needs to work on his foot-work. While Kanu Nwankwo's legs were and advantage to him, Sadiq's long legs are still a disadvantage. He needs to sort-out that problem.

For his age he did well.

Then u and Bolt have no right to diss a kid who did. U sound like u paid for a ticket and u want ur money back. I never expected a next Kanu because i know Kanu is one of a kind. The boy should be free to make his own name. Yes he was bad against Germany but so was the whole team, in the next match him and Mikel basically got us the bronze and for u to down him like that just reaks of ungratefulness.
I personally feel Sadiq Umar did just Ok.

The thing is most peeps expected too much from him. Siasia took a gamble by starting him against Japan and that paid off.

I remember I and TheGoodJoe had an argument about starting Sadiq. TheGoodJoe advocated for him to start the Japan game while I never did. I personally don't feel comfortable when a coach starts a debutant in a key game. Thankfully Sadiq featured in their last friendly before they travelled to Brazil and mayb Siasia saw enough to give him the nudge to start. If Sadiq did nt feature in that friendly I am not too sure Siasia would have started him against Japan.

Considering his age and level of exposure the boy did ok. Peeps forget he just turned 19 and only played 2 or 3 seria A games last season.

This is the U23 for Christ's sakes, Sadiq should even be playing U20. Sadiq was only a late call-up when it became obvious that we will not be getting the services of Ighalo, Iheanacho and Success.

Sadiq Umar needs time to mature. It is just a pity we are out of the next U20 else it would have been nice for us to have Sadiq, Awoniyi and Osimhen as our striking options. All tall gangling strikers! grin. This Trio are even eligible for the 2020 Olympics.

IMHO he should stay away from the Super Eagles for now and focus on his club career. We will get him when or if he is ripe.

Going back to the issue of the magnitude of an Olympic Gold medal win. We all saw the magnitude of emotion that both the Brazilian players and fans showed after they won that Gold medal. Brazil of all countries.

I personally almost shed tears along with them. U think they would have forgotten that in 20 years time and not make reference to it?

I had to ask some1 here if he really watched Atlanta '96.
No Brazilian fan that followed Rio 2016 would forget this win so in a hurry.

The only players worth taking forward from this team are Daniel, Ekong, Azubuike, Etebo and Imoh.
Abdulahi Shehu is currently the best RB option for the Super Eagles and that has not changed even after the Olympics.

Stanley Amuzie and Kingsley Madu both stand a very good chance of taking over the LB position in the Super Eagles as Elderson Echiejile is no longer the force he used to be.

Ekong has always been part of the Super Eagles. Azubuike, Imoh and Etebo have debuted already for the Super Eagles just also like Shehu, Amuzie and Madu.

This means Emmanuel Daniel is the only newbee worth taking into the Super Eagles.

Am also that surprised, not really at the omission of A. Iwobi, O. Azubuike, K. Omeruo, Isaac Success and I. Ezekiel, but the quality of the new invitees.

I wish they had invited something better, especially N. Igiebor. I doubt if the guys has got something new to offer. Stephen Keshi gave this guy his chance but failed to take it.

In any case, this is AFCON qualifiers and not the World Cup Qualifiers, so lets still hope for the best in the future.
We need our best players to start playing together early enough for proper gelling. That Tanzania game is our only friendlies window before the WC qualifiers. For now we already have so many quality players to select from. So no need going back inviting some old players hu have lost steam just to revive their careers.

We need to hit d grown running. From d Rio squad we have a harvest of quality players. If u add this to d number that were not released by their clubs and some older Super Eagles players hu are still in form, we have a robust squad already.

Nigeria call up 5 Rio Olympics stars, Etebo snubbed but Osimhen in.

Etebo not called up by new Eagles coach

by Samm Audu

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has called up five players from the Rio Olympics but with top scorer Oghenekaro Etebo overlooked just as Nigeria U20 star Victor Osimhen got his first Eagles call-up for next month’s AFCON qualifier against Tanzania in Uyo.

We first told you

The players from the Olympics are goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel, defenders William Troost-Ekong, Shehu Abdullahi and Kingsley Madu as well as captain Mikel Obi and Imoh Ezekiel.

Youngster Victor Osimhen, who will sign a professional contract in January with German Bundesliga Wolfsburg, has been handed surprise call-up as well by the new Eagles coach.

The match is a dead rubber, as both teams have been eliminated, but Rohr and the Super Eagles are using the game as rehearsal for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying series Matchday 1 clash with Zambia in Ndola in October.

The Franco-German, named Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles by the NFF two weeks ago, has called up three goalkeepers, eight defenders, four midfielders and eight forwards for the game scheduled for the Akwa Ibom International Stadium, Uyo on Saturday, 3rd September.

Captain Mikel, whose sterling leadership of the Nigeria U23 to the Bronze Medal match of the Rio 2016 Olympics has drawn global applause, is joined in the midfield by the energetic Ogenyi Onazi, Belgium –based former youth international Wilfred Ndidi and Israel –based Nosa Igiebor, who has not featured for Nigeria since missing the cut for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Emmanuel Daniel, who has done his reputation no harm with some breath –taking reflex saves at the Olympics, joins Carl Ikeme and Ikechukwu Ezenwa to fight for the gloves, while home –based Jamiu Alimi finds a place amongst Leon Balogun, William Troost-Ekong, Chidozie Awaziem, Abdullahi Shehu, Musa Muhammed, Elderson Echiejile and Kingsley Madu in the defence.

Rohr, a former defender, has also opted for a strong attacking line, with assistant captain Ahmed Musa leading Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon, Victor Moses, Imoh Ezekiel, Odion Ighalo, Brown Ideye and youngster Victor Osimhen.

All the players have been directed to report in Uyo on Sunday, 28th August 2016.

FULL LIST:

Goalkeepers: Carl Ikeme (Wolverhampton Wanderers, England); Emmanuel Daniel (Enugu Rangers); Ikechukwu Ezenwa (FC IfeanyiUbah)

Defenders: Leon Balogun (FSV Mainz 05, Germany); William Troost-Ekong (Haugesund FC, Norway); Chidozie Awaziem (FC Porto, Portugal); Jamiu Alimi (Kano Pillars); Abdullahi Shehu (Uniao da Madeira, Portugal); Musa Muhammed (Istanbul Basaksehir, Turkey); Elderson Echiejile (AS Monaco, France), Kingsley Madu (AS Trencin, Slovakia)

Midfielders: Mikel John Obi (Chelsea FC, England); Ogenyi Onazi (Trabzonspor, Turkey); Wilfred Ndidi (KRC Genk, Belgium); Nosa Igiebor (Maccabi Tel Aviv, Israel)

Forwards: Ahmed Musa (Leicester City, England); Kelechi Iheanacho (Manchester City, England); Moses Simon (KAA Gent, Belgium); Victor Moses (Chelsea FC, England); Imoh Ezekiel (Al-Arabi Sporting Club, Qatar), Odion Ighalo (Watford FC, England); Brown Ideye (Olympiacos FC, Greece); Victor Osimhen (Wolfsburg FC, Germany)

Etebo out may be due to his injury. But how come Alex Iwobi and Azubuike are nt on that list?

Jamiu Alimi of Kano Pillars would on the list while Kenneth Omeruo is snubbed. Isaac Success and Imho Ezekiel left out while Victor Osimhen is in.

Nosa Igiebor that is on a declining curve is selected ahead of fast rising Alex Iwobi?

This people don come again o.

TheGoodJoe:

Ekong impressed me a whole lot and I hope he continues developing. I enjoyed him when he tried to push the game from the back. His highline control was brilliant.

Indeed, he is ready to put a fight for the Starting place in the Super Eagles.

Amuzie showed lots of Stamina. That is something that he has in abundance. He runs up and down the flanks comfortably. He lacks the composure to create dangerous chances for the attack. He can whip the ball with force. He just needs to work on his accuracy.

I expect the current Super Eagles coach to play with more stability and composure. I see Madu fitting in also. With Oshaniwa also, I think our back can cope. I hope the coach calls Oshaniwa and carries a fair screening for the left back role.

Sadiq Umar has speed and the talent to become a top rated striker. He needs experience and training to perform regularly at the top level.

Seth for a make shift defender was okay and deserve praises. People just look at result and avoid the work put in. Seth did not play his natural role, so we should expect mistakes.

There were a lot of positives to go home with.
You couldn't have said it any better.

I am one of those few people that believe Sadiq Umar put up a very descent performance cos I never expected too much from him anyways.
I am glad u mentioned he needs EXPERIENCE and training to grow. And that is exactly what He needs now.

Talking about Seth Sincere when peeps criticise him I usually ask if they know he just turned 18, nt yet a professional league player and also not a CB?
For his level of exposure he did ok. Aside the momentary errors he makes that boy is nice ball passer. He also to me should have been with d Flying Eagles where he would have added more value.

Sadiq thanks for you service to the U-23 team, but please we don't need you no more just stay far from our national team .
Bros chill. The weight of expectation on this lad was too much.

Tell me, are Junior Ajayi and Taiwo Awoniyi any better of?

I had wanted he and Awoniyi to play with the Flying Eagles team, since they are both still very much eligible. That would havel really given them a good development opportunity. But, unfortunately the Flying Eagles have crashed out. Sadiq is still elligible for 2020 Olympics. grin so hu knows he fit don turn to the "next Kanu" by then. grin
