terzurum5: AF Nigeria Colombia Siasia upbeat but fears Manus heat at Rio Olympics https://africanfootball.com/bp_images/2016/04/Samm_29_July_2.jpg Nigeria Olympic team coach Samson Siasia
Nigeria Olympic team coach Samson Siasia has said he expects to steer his team past a group that has Japan and Sweden at the Rio Olympics but has also raised concerns over the heat in Manus, where his team will play their first two matches.
Siasia said he expects Nigeria to reach the knockout rounds of the Rio Olympics from “a fair enough group”.
He guided Nigeria to the Gold medal match at Beijing 2008 and said he believes a wining start against Japan on August 4 will set the tone for another great campaign.
“I am targeting a convincing win in our opening match. Japan won’t be easy, but we need to beat them well to take command of the group,” he said.
“The win will give us the confidence for the matches against Sweden and Colombia.” However, he said he is apprehensive about the heat in Manus, where Nigeria will play their first two matches.
“The only difficulty I foresee is the hot weather in manus for our first two games,” he said. “All the same, that can’t stop us.” africanfootball.com/news/625226/Siasia-upbeat-but-fears-Manus-heat-at-Rio-Olympics Then camp the team in Kaduna for aclimatization. Excuses have started. If Nigeria should complain of heat then a Scandinavian country like Sweden should complain of fire. |

The official draw for the Olympic Football Tournament was held at the iconic Maracana Stadium on Thursday.
Owen da Gama's troops were drawn in Group A alongside hosts Brazil, Denmark and Iraq with the Seleção vying for their first Olympic gold. The South Americans have yet to win gold in 12 Olympic appearances.
1996 champions Nigeria were drawn in Group B.
South Africa will be eyeing revenge over Sweden having lost 4-1 to the Europeans at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Full draw: Men: Group A - Brazil, South Africa, Iraq, Denmark
Group B - Sweden, Colombia, Nigeria, Japan
Group C - Fiji, South Korea, Mexico, Germany
Group D - Honduras, Algeria, Portugal, Argentina
Women: Group E - Brazil, China, Sweden, South Africa
Group F - Canada, Australia, Zimbabwe, Germany Group G - USA, New Zealand, France, Columbia africanfootball.com/news/625162/Rio-2016-Favourable-draws-for-Banyana-SA-Under-23-s SA are in no easy grps. The SA i know with their pedigree will definitely lose to Brazil and Denmark. Their female team is in same grp with China, Sweden and hosts Brazil and they call that favorable grp? These 3 teams are among d top 10 ranked women teams in d world. SA would b favorably hammered by these three teams. And may likely concede 10-15 goals put together in that group. |

Group B (Our Group) to me is the most evenly matched group. Lucky enough we got the easiest of the top seeded Teams (Japan). My assessment of our chances in that Group: Let's look at the group from 4 angles: (1) Nigeria finished 1st in African Qualifiers Columbia finished 2nd in South America ahead of Uruguay and Brazil who were 3rd and 4th respectively Sweden finished 1st in Europe (a continent that had Spain, Portugal, Germany, Holland, Belgium in participation) Japan finished 1st in Asia. 3 continental champions and 1 first Runner-up are in our group. How else can u describe it if nt "group of death". HOWEVER, experience has shown that performance at the continental stage does nt in MOST cases repeat itself in the world stage. We have seen where teams that finished 3rd and 4th in the continental qualifiers doing far better than teams that finished 1st and 2nd. (2) Pedigree: What usually repeat itself more at the world stage is performance due to pedigree. Now, go back and look at the Teams in our group and assess them based on pedigree at this stage (U20 - U23). The Teams I fear the most at this stage are Brazil, Argentina and Spain. Other threats: Mexico, Portugal, France, Uruguay, Germany. None of these guys are in our group. However, Columbia, Japan and Sweden have shown they are no push overs at age grade level. So based on pedigree, we have a fairly easy group. (3) How do these countries perform at senior levels? The U23 is a very competitive age grade. Very close to the senior World Cup. A good number of the U23 players are already senior team players for their various countries. No one needs to tell us where the likes of Columbia, Japan and Sweden belong at senior level. Any day any time they are a tough nut to crack. Senior team performance has a way of rubbing off on the U23 team. (4) Another way you can look at it is who are likely to make the squads for each team? I know a couple of good individual players from Columbia who are U23. With 3 over-aged playesr we expect to see the likes of James Rodrigues, Quadrado and who knows maybe David Ospina in the team. Some1 mentioned Zlatan Ibrahimovic to make the Swede squad. Then Kagawa and co for Japan. All those inclusions make those teams tougher. My fears just like every other forumite here is will Siasia select our best U23 players plus 3 well deserving over-aged players? Imagine Ibrahimovic leading Sweden's attack and Taiwo Awoniyi or Osimhen Leading Nigeria's attack. What will u call that? David Vs Goliath? Right now as it is, looking at all 4 angles highlighted above it still points to d fact that we are in a very difficult group. I cannot stick my neck to say whether we will qualify from that group or not until I see Siasia's camping programme and list of invited players. My verdict: WE ARE IN A VERY DIFFICULT GROUP. |

TheGoodJoe: Why do we do this? Why? Why do we come online and share articles, comments, news about out talents making something for themselves home and abroad?
Is it because we are perfect? No. We are far from it. The FIFA ranking says it. Everyone can see it.
Is it because we are proud? No. We are not going to the AFCON and we did not go there last time. How can we be proud.
We do this because out there, little to no one cares about the struggle that goes on down here. No one cares that the Government hands Billions of naira to the NFF and we have little to show.
None to few of those folks care if there are corrupt people in the powers of our football holding us back with bad decisions.
Do the Foreigners think we are perfect? No.
We do this because it takes us to see the light in the dark tunnel. It takes us to tell the World that Blessing Eleke was proud that he saved his team from losing a game. That he is not a black idiot but a young man who is making a name for himself despite the obstacles he faced growing up.
It takes people like us to tell the Foreigners that, "No. We are not all age cheats. There are a lot of young Nigerians who move from secondary schools to clubs.
The likes of John Mikel Obi who Plateau United fans called a small secondary school boy.
If we do not know, who will? Dailymail? Telegraph?
It is us, you and I on this thread, Nigerians who should know.
If Osimhen did not go through the MRI, many will jump up and down and say he is overage. He does not look smooth.
No one says there are no age cheats in Nigeria. Saying all our top young talents are age cheats or all players in the NPFL are age cheats defeat what we do here.
We are here to show that despite people see us as darkness, the sun still shines here. Good write up my brother. I hate it when peeps come here to tag our players age cheats. I know many old players that did nt cheat with their age. One of them is Emmanuel Amuneke. He was born in 1970. He finished Class Five(so it was called then) in 1989. That means he was 19 then. (We dey old for school those days). He shortly after signed a professional contract with Julius Berger FC. He broke into d national team at d 1991 All African games (U23) as a 21years old. Shortly after he signed for Egyptian giant-Zamalek. And d rest is history. He was one of d over-aged players at d 1996 Olympics. He used his real age. He did nt look older than the Likes of Amokachi, Okocha, Ikpeba and Oliseh hu were still U23 then. I know most professional African players age-cheat bt it is nt 100%. It baffles me that even with the introduction of the MRI some people still believe our last 2 Golden Eaglets class were over aged. Taiwo Awoniyi that even wrote WAEC after he participated in the 2013 FIFA U17. A guy dat knows John Lazarus in Abuja said he wrote WAEC a year before he featured at d U17 WC yet people were saying Lazarus doesn't look 17. I know how people doubted d ages of the 2013 Eaglets until a pix they took 2 years earlier as U15 surfaced. And the difference in terms of physique was so clear. They looked 15 in 2011 & then looked 30 in 2013? Age cheats was well pronounced in d past bt we have a new generation of talents of which most are truely their real ages and lets run with that. And i expect more from dem cos they are yet to hit their peaks. |

binhozie: I never said all players that turn up for U 20 are 30 yrs ,You are purposely missing the point even a yr makes you an age cheat, 24 yr olds 25 yr olds in U20 are cheats you don't have to be 30 before you are a cheat and they are honest ones, and they are those that are more than 35 self but I believe about 50% or more are not honest with their age MRI has an age span of 5 yrs or more so 21 yr olds or older can fit in to an U 17 team, There has been a conscious effort to reduce it in Nigerian youth set up I can see that, kudos to the relevant authorities but its still there, Some players fail MRI scan for U17 and play for U20 in 2 yrs time, I don't know why it happens thus maybe you know kindly enlighten me. I can see you are gradually shifting grounds. This info may help you shift more grounds: MRI offers an alternative as a non‐invasive method of examination. The grading system presented clearly identifies different degrees of epiphysial fusion of the distal radius. Inter‐rater and intrarater reliabilities are high and the learning curve steep because of clear and simple criteria, even for a non‐radiologist. Complete fusion occurs at the age of 17–18 years in the ethnic groups examined, with faster maturation among Argentinian and Malaysian boys in comparison with Algerian and Swiss. The mean age of participants with complete fusion of the radius was 18.3 years (SD 0.9) indicating that complete fusion is very unlikely to occur at 17 years of age. In our population only one boy out of 130 aged 16 (0.8%) presented complete fusion. Most boys in the age group between 16 and 17 years presented as grade II . The current data justify extension of the examined population to other ethnic groups such as sub‐Saharans, East Asians and Central Americans. As the presented study did not register weight and height, we recommend including anthropometrical data including body mass index to analyse the possible influence on the speed of maturation. In conclusion, MRI offers an alternative as a non‐invasive method of examination of epiphysial fusion. The grading system can accurately identify the variable degrees of epiphysial fusion in an objective teachable manner. source: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2465138/ |

I don't derive any joy in saying this things, I am a true fan I weep for the state of Nigeria's football We need to start puting systems in place that identify quality 10 yr olds, and groom them, They have been efforts I know but we need to do more.
