Suspected Fulani Herdsmen have killed another middle aged woman in Nchatancha, Enugu State, Igbere TV reports.

As at the time of filing this report, angry youths have blocked the whole Major Roads, protesting the killing of the innocent woman.


Igbere TV recalls that last three weeks, suspected Fulani Herdsmen killed, Rev FR Paul Offu in Enugu State. .

He was reportedly shot by the suspected Fulani herdsmen on Thursday evening.



Recall that last two week, Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi sent anti-kidnapping bill to state assembly, to employ 1,700 forest guards

The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, stated that the state government upon reviewing the security situation in the state, resolved to send an Anti-kidnapping Bill to the state assembly as an Executive Bill, to ensure maximum security.

Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration further resolved to employ 1,700 Forest Guards within 30 days, comprising 100 persons per Local Government Area, in compliance with the recent decision of the South East Governors Forum on Community Policing.

Sen. Kalu Hails SGF, CoS, New Ministers

Former Governor of Abia State and Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate, Dr. Orji Kalu has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing people with intellectual capacity and political dexterity to drive the next level agenda, Igbere TV reports.


Acknowledging the pedigree of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha and Chief of Staff to the President, Alhaji Abba Kyari, the former governor stressed that the executive, legislative and judiciary will work harmoniously for the sake of national well being.


Kalu, while congratulating the newly appointed Ministers, Special Advisers and other political appointees, charged the political class to live up to expectations.

Speaking on Wednesday with a cross-section of supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia North Senatorial District, the former governor urged Nigerians to sustain their support for President Muhammadu Buhari in his efforts to reposition the country.

He called on the newly inaugurated Federal Executive Council (FEC) members, to emulate the President in discharging their national duties .

"The APC has a robust manifesto with emphasis on improving the welfare of Nigerians.

Sowore, Nnamdi Kanu Plotted To Topple Buhari — SSS

The State Security Services (SSS) has said that the publisher of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore in his plot to topple the government the held series of meetings with members of a proscribed terrorist organisation, Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) with a view to mobilising strong forces to realise his agenda at changing the government,Igbere TV reports.



Igbere TV reports that the SSS also challenged the Federal High Court order, allowing it to detain Omoyele Sowore, Convener, #RevolutionNow protests, for 45 days against its request of 90 days pending investigation.

The SSS argued that its investigation so far revealed that “RevolutionNow” was allegedly a smokescreen for the actual intention of Mr Sowore and his allies “to topple the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The DSS said it was engaged in a painstaking investigation of activities of Mr Sowore, the candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the last presidential election, in view of the quantum of evidence so far gathered and may return to court to seek an extension of the 45 days granted by the Abuja-based court to detain him.

The security agency made this known in a fresh document it filed at the Federal High Court on Monday in response to an application by Mr Sowore.

In the counter-affidavit deposed to by Godwin Agbadua, an official of the SSS, it was stated that Mr Sowore was arrested on reasonable suspicion of having committed a capital offence, upon his alleged involvement in terrorists’ activities.

“The respondent/applicant (Sowore) planned to violently change the government through the hashtag RevolutionNow.

“The respondent/appllcant hid under the cover of call for mass protest with the hashtag RevolutionNow to mislead unsuspecting and innocent members of the public into joining him to topple the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

“In his plot to topple the government the respondent/applicant held series of meetings with members at a prescribed terrorist organisation, Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) with a view to mobilising strong forces to realise his agenda at changing the government

“The respondent formed an alliance with a fugitive, Nnamdi Kanu, a self-acclaimed leader of the proscribed terrorists group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to launch series of attacks on Nigeria with a view to violently removing the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“After series of closed-door meetings between the duo in the United States of America, they addressed a press conference wherein they both stated their resolve to form alliance against the Nigerian government. The duo stated that they have a well-planned out strategy to realize their objective, which is toppling the government.

“The applicant/respondent is investigating the activities of the respondent /applicant as it relates to a terrorist organisation, IPOB. The facts show a conjecture between the respondent/applicant and IPOB activities.

“There is the need for the applicant/respondent to investigate such reasonable suspicion of the relationship between the respondent/applicant and IPOB.

“The respondent held series of meetings with some foreign collaborators outside Nigeria including Dubai where millions of dollars were given to him to sponsor a widespread attack on Nigeria with a view to violently removing the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and freeing Ibrahim El-Zakzaky (Sheikh).

“In furtherance to the plans to violently free El-Zakzaky from lawful custody. the respondent held several meetings with a proscribed terrorists organisation. Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) where they strategized on how to carry out attacks to force the government to free Elzakzaky.

“The respondent stated in one of his videos that Shiite members, who are members of the proscribed terrorists group, IMN were going to join forces with him in bringing down the government. The statement and the meetings of the respondent/applicant raises issue of grave suspicion of supporting a proscribed terrorists’ organisation, IMN.

“The suspicions require diligent investigation by the applicant/respondent. The planned action constitutes a threat of violence to intimidate or cause panic in members of the public as a means of affecting political conduct

“The investigation is still ongoing. Upon the completion of investigation, the case file will be forwarded to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation for advice and possible prosecution,” SSS alleged.

Nuremberg: Chinua Achebe Predicted Ekweremadu’s Attack Before His Death

Following the attack on Senator Ike Ekweremadu on Saturday by the members of the Indigenous People Of Biafra, IPOB, Nigerians have dug out the quote of Noble writer, Chinua Achebe.


Igbere TV had reported that Senator Ekweremadu was stoned with eggs when he attended a new Yam Festival in Germany.


According to Achebe, “He who travels to eat his ancestral Yam in a foreign country should be ready for the wrath of dike the warriors of the 7 seas and 7 mountains.” – 1995

With this quote, many Nigerians have said Achebe predicted Ekweremadu’s attack before he died.



Meanwhile, many Nigerians have criticised the attack on Senator Ekweremadu.

The Presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party in the 2019 general elections, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has condemned the attack on Senator Ike Ekweremadu by the members of Indigenous People Of Biafra, Igbere TV reports.


In a statement made available to Igbere TV on Monday, Atiku described the action of IPOB as an uncivilised and undemocratic.

He said he waited to speak privately with Ike before making a public statement and have expressed my full and total repudiation of the unfortunate incident with him.


The statement reads,

"The physical assault on the immediate past Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, in Nuremberg, Germany, is an uncivilised and undemocratic action that I condemn in totality."

"I waited to speak privately with Ike before making a public statement and I have expressed my full and total repudiation of the unfortunate incident with him."

"No one deserves such mob action, least of all a man who is a specimen of what a democrat should be. A champion of the rights of the people of the Southeast and Nigeria, and a patriot par excellence."

EXPOSED!!! How Kidnap Suspect, Wadume Was Freed From Home

More details have emerged about how an army captain aided the escape of notorious kidnapper,
Hamisu Wadume.

Igbere TV gathered that the army captain allegedly freed Wadume at his personal residence after whisking him away from the Ibi military base in Taraba State.

According to report, the three policemen and one civilian; Inspector Mark Edaile, Sergeant Usman Danzumi, Sergeant Dahiru Musa and Olajide Owolabi, who arrested Wadume, were killed by soldiers along Ibi-Wukari road in Taraba state, on 7 August 2019.

The policemen were from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Intelligence Response Team (IRT).

A source familiar with the investigation said after the shooting, the soldiers moved all the killed policemen and the wounded to their base, including kidnap suspect Wadume, who was still in handcuff and leg chain.

It was from the military base that the captain moved Wadume to his personal residence in Ibi, after which he was freed. A welder was allegedly called to free Wadume from the handcuffs and leg chain.

Igbere TV also learnt that the captain and some policemen now in custody went to the police office to destroy the records. “Fortunately, there are other records of their arrival, including an official letter in the policy file of the police station,” the source said.


When contacted yesterday police spokesman DCP, Frank Mba refused to comment on the matter, saying it was still an ongoing investigation.

Attempts to contact Defence spokesman Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu was unsuccessful yesterday evening at the time of filing this report. His mobile phone number was unreachable.

There was pandemonium on Sunday after Yoruba and Hausa traders at Oke-Odo market along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway clashed.

Igbere TV gathered that the clash led to a traffic Lockdown in the area.

Igbere TV reports that vehicles heading to Lagos from Sango in Ogun state and those moving to Abule-Egba from Oshodi and other parts of the state have been trapped.

According to report, trouble started last night when traders at the market where food items are sold clashed over a yet to be known issue.

The situation reportedly escalated on Sunday morning when aggrieved traders started burning wares and make-shift tents.

Igbere TV reports that security operatives are currently trying to restore normalcy in the market.

Death Averted As Pedestrian Bridge Collapses In Lagos

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Sunday, confirmed that no casualty was recorded when a section of a pedestrian bridge was damaged at Yaba on Saturday, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that the Director-General of the Agency, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu said that no life was lost during the incident.



He, however, added that the agency carried out prompt recovery operations to ensure free flow of traffic in the area.

“An empty truck with registration number AAA 364 XS crashed onto the pedestrian bridge at the bus stop as a result of brake failure, thereby damaging the bridge railings.

“However, no loss of life nor injury was sustained at the scene,” the LASEMA boss said.

He said that one of the affected bridge railings was successfully recovered off the road with the aid of the agency’s truck and placed at a lay-by to ensure free vehicular movement.

The entrance to the pedestrian bridge is however closed for public use.

Attack On Sen. Ekweremadu : Nnamdi Kanu's Surety, Abaribe Blows Hot, Warns IPOB

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has finally reacted  to the attack on former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu in Germany on Saturday.

Igbere TV recalls that Abaribe was one of the sureties of the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu before he was released by the Federal Government.

Reacting over the ugly incident on Saturday, Abaribe described the action of IPOB as reprehensible and utterly sacrilegious.

Abaribe not only condemned the despicable act, but said it smacks of utter ignorance of the prevailing situation at home with regards to what the leaders are doing in the circumstance. " It is a brazen show of ingratitude to a man who has been at the fore front in the struggle for all that is good for the Igbo race".

In a statement made available to Igbere TV  on Sunday, the Minority leader said he and the entire minority caucus in the Senate are appalled on the very nauseating attack on the revered Deputy Senate President, Ekweremadu for no reason whatsoever. "We condemn it", Abaribe said.

Senator Ekweremadu he said has given his all in standing for the Igbo race, particularly when "we stuck out our neck to arrange and stand for surety for the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

"Obviously this is not how to repay a man, an outstanding leader of men, an unpretentious Igbo leader who has given his all even going as far as deploying his means to arrange for the bail of Nnamdi Kanu, not minding the repercussions to his illustrious political career.

"It is unfortunate. The perpetrators of the attack should know that as Igbos, we respect elders and reverence our leaders. The unwaranted attack is not the character of the Igbo. This is un-Igbo. It is most worrisome and even inconceivable that the attackers will choose an auspicious occasion where our people are celebrating and showcasing our rich culture to exhibit such unbecoming and condemnable conduct in the name of agitation.

"No, that was not agitation, no right thinking human will identify with such behaviour. Yes, Nigeria is going through a horrendous phase, which is a fault line that her leaders, particularly we the Igbo leaders are engaging others to find a lasting solution to.

"Resorting to mob mentality and venting the spleen on our leaders rather creates a vacuum that will leave our people helpless and confused in the circumstance", he said.

Senator Abaribe added that there are rules of engagement in the country when things go awry and that is the way we should go at all times,  until we reach an acceptable national consensus in which Senator Ekweremadu will always play a major role.

Remember the popular Igbo saying..."Gbuo dike,,Gbuo dike, ngbe ihe ike mere achowa dike".

However, he appealed to Senator Ekweremadu not to be discouraged in any way, but rather be stoic and take it in its stride as the price often paid in leadership.

Ekweremadu in statement made available to Igbere TV on Saturday said he was disappointed by IPOB conduct especially asone of the persons, who have spoken up on justice for Ndigbo, the Python Dance, judicial killings in Igbo land.


He noted that he rallied up for the South East Senate Caucus to secure Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release with Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe taking him on bail to douse tension in the South East.

"I Was Attacked by IPOB in Germany"

"I attended the Second Annual Cultural Festival and Convention organised by Ndi-Igbo Germany in Nurnberg today where I was billed to give a keynote address along with the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, who, however could not make it eventually."


"I was given a resounding welcome by Ndigbo in Germany and everything went smoothly until some men, who identified themselves as IPOB members stormed the venue and began to complain about the killings in the South East, stressing that there would be no Igbo event at the venue.
I tried to engage them, but when they became unruly, I had to leave the venue. The organisers also invited the police and I was accompanied out of the venue."


"Much as I am disappointed in their conduct, especially as I am one of the persons, who have spoken up on justice for Ndigbo, the Python Dance, judicial killings in Igbo land and elsewhere both on the floor of the Senate and in my written and personal engagements with the Presidency as well as rallied the South East Senate Caucus to secure Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release with Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe taking him on bail to douse tension in the South East, I nevertheless do not hold this to heart against them, for they know not what they do."

President Muhammadu Buhari Saturday in Katsina, Katsina State, charged the military to be more spontaneous in restoring peace to the country, particularly states troubled by bandits, ordering them to “Pursue and eliminate”, wherever sighted, bandits that have been killing, maiming and extorting innocent citizen, Igbere TV reports.


Addressing 15 officers and 160 soldiers of the 17th Army Brigade and Nigerian Air Force 213 Operational Base in Katsina, under the “Operation Hadarin Daji’’, at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Airport, President Buhari, said:

“This group was formed by the military to secure the geo-political zone from the activities of bandits. Fundamentally, it is your responsibility to secure the country.



“As the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, I believe you are capable of doing it. I don’t think you should spare any bandit. Identify and eliminate them. Pursue them anywhere you can find them and eliminate them,’’ he said.

“Nigeria deserves peace. The rainy season is good and we are already achieving food security, but we need peace. The money saved from food importation will be used to purchase arms for operations,’’ he said.

President Buhari said the government and all officials were being sustained in office by the ordinary people, and they owe the people a duty to protect their lives and property.

Eid-el-Kabir: "God Has Placed Nigeria in a Unique Position" - Reps Spokesman, Ben Kalu

House of Reps Spokesman, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has felicitated with Muslims as they celebrate their Eid-el-Kabir.

In a goodwill message made available to Igbere TV on Sunday, Benkalu said God has placed Nigeria in a unique position and urged Nigerians to use this period
to remember the sacrifice they must collectively make for the good of the nation.

Kalu noted that the task of nation building is a joint one which if Nigerians must see the Nigeria of their dreams, they must be willing to cry together, laugh together, sacrifice together and celebrate together.

Eid-el-Kabir: Kalu Advocates Peaceful Co -existence

Former Governor of Abia State and Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate, Dr. Orji Kalu has urged Nigerians to sustain peaceful co-existence regardless of ethnic, religious and political differences, Igbere TV reports.

Sen. Kalu while acknowledging the roles of spiritual and traditional leaders in promoting peace and unity in the country, called on Muslim faithful to extend the merriment of the season to people of other religious beliefs.

The former governor, who urged politicians and other stakeholders to be cautious in their utterances on national issues, added that Nigeria's diversity should not be used to cause disharmony among the people.

In a statement signed by his media office in commemoration of the 2019 Eid-Al-Kabir and made available to Igbere TV, Kalu felicitated with the Muslim community on the festivity.

He said, " I join our Muslim brothers and sisters across the globe to mark this year's Eid-el-Kabir.

At least 120 cultists identified to be terrorizing the people of Ebonyi State have reportedly denounced their membership, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV gathered that the cultists who hail from the 13 Local Government Areas of the State converged at the State headquarters of the Christ Embassy church located at old Abakaliki- Enugu road.

According to an eyewitness who spoke to with journalists said the suspected cultists willingly accepted to denounce their membership shortly after listening to the State Pastor of Christ Embassy church, Mrs. Eunice Oyeyemi.

He said: “Cult members denounced their membership and immediately got baptized in Christ Embassy. They confessed their willingness to renounce cult activities.

“They fully accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior and immediately, they were baptized and promised never to engage in such ugly activities.

” I sincerely wish to applaud the Governor for this great initiative of changing destinies and lives for Ebonyians. To me, this is the best gift ever.

Northern Leaders under the aegis of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, Enugu State chapter, have announced a two-day closure of livestock and perishable goods markets in the State, Igbere TV has learnt.

Igbere TV gathered that the market will not be open for business on Wednesday and Thursday next week.

The announcement was made at a press briefing jointly addressed by their leaders in Enugu, on Saturday.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting, the leaders of the groups said the decision was to enable them embark on “sensitization tour of all livestock and perishable goods markets and every Fulani settlement in Enugu State between Wednesday, August 14 and Thursday, August 15, 2019”.

They explained that “during the sensitization exercise all livestock and perishable goods market will be closed down, either in cattle markets, Fulani settlements, or wherever they exist throughout Enugu State”, adding that they have constituted a 14-man committee for the programme for the purposes of identifying all their members and weed out infiltrators.

The Northerners led by the South East Chairman of MACBAN, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki and the Sarkin Hausawa, Enugu State, Alhaji Abukakar Yusuf Sambo, regretted the unfortunate incident that led to the death of Rev. Fr. Paul Offu of St. James The Greater Parish, Ugbawka in Nkanu East Local Government Area and enjoined his family and the people of the state in mourning with fortitude.

They disclosed their commitment towards the security of the state, saying: “In appreciation of the good gesture, which Enugu State has extended to us, we are prepared to join hands with the police, the military and other security agencies in ensuring maximum security in our neighbourhood.”

The Northern leaders, therefore, expressed their “profound appreciation to Enugu State Government for the peace that prevails in the state which has helped us in our business” as well as “the peaceful co-existence we have enjoyed over the years”.

The Nigerian army has finally admitted that a soldier, 'Corporal Ajayi Johnson' actually killed a Keke Rider, identified as Mr Chimaobi Nwaogu in Aba, on Wednesday.


Igbere TV recalls that the Nigerian army had earlier denied that its men killed the Keke operator which sparked heavy protest in Aba. The army initially said the killing was perpetrated by unknown gunmen in military camouflage.

But in a statement made available to Igbere TV by Aliyu Yusuf on Saturday, the army said further investigation on the incident revealed that Lance Corporal Ajayi Johnson, one of the soldiers deployed at Forward Operations Base Ohanze for security duty absconded his duty location to an unknown destination and was reported to have been involved in a scuffle that led to the shooting and killing of the Okada rider Mr Chimaobi on Wednesday 7 August 2019.

According to the army's deputy director public relation, "the soldier was casually dressed in camouflage T – shirt which led to the initial suspected identity of the culprit as a cultist."


He, however, revealed that the soldier has since been arrested and detained.

Yusuf also noted that discplinary procedure is in progress. And the soldier will be tried according to extant military law and if found culpable will be dismissed and handed over to the Civil Police for prosecution.

The statement reads,

"Reference to our earlier press release on the incident that led to the shooting of an innocent citizen Mr Chimaobi Nwaogu of Umuokereke-Ngwa, in Obingwa LGA Abia State. Headquarters 82 Division Nigerian Army wishes to inform the general public that :"

"Further investigation

"The attention of 82 Division Nigerian Army has been drawn to a violent incident involving an individual identified as MR CHIMOBI NNAORGU who allegedly lost his life from a gun shot injury inflicted on him by unknown gunmen suspected to be a cultist in camouflage T.SHIRT at UMUOKERE NGWA COMMUNITY IN OBINGWA LGA OF ABIA STATE on Wednesday 7 AUGUST 2019."

"This incident resulted in a breakdown of law and order as youths in the community took law into their hands by burning down houses. Troops of 144 Battalion with the assistance of other security agencies have calm down the situation."

"I wish to state categorically that 82 Division troops deployed for any operation do not brutalised law abiding innocent citizens in line with Nigerian Army code of conduct for internal security operations. He said the government is already engaging relevant agencies to establish the identities of those involved in the reported incident with a view to ensuring adequate punishment for whoever is found culpable.


The statement reads in part,

"The attention of Abia State Government has been drawn to a violent incident involving a security agent and an individual, identified as Mr Chimaobi Nwaorgu, who allegedly lost his life from gunshot wounds in Umuokereke-Ngwa, a village in Obingwa LGA of the State. Subsequently, youths of the community reportedly took the corpse of the victim to Ogbor Hill Area of Aba to lodge a protest at a media house which led to some skirmishes."

House of Reps Reacts to Court Order Baring NASS From Taking-Over Edo Assembly

The House of Representatives has reacted to the court order restraining the National Assembly and its agents from taking over the Edo State Assembly until the determination of a pending suit before it.

Speaking with Igbere TV correspondent on Wednesday, The Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu condemned the ruling, describing it as an act of usurpation of the functions of one arm of government by another.

Noting that no arm of the government is supposed to abdicate power to another arm, Kalu emphasized that the 9th National Assembly believes in the democratic principle of separation of powers; which is why this court ruling poses a great problem.

He further quoted section 11(4) of Nigeria constitution which says “where the House of Assembly of any State is unable to perform its functions by reason of the situation prevailing in that State, the National Assembly may intervene and take over the legislative functions of that House until such a time as the House of Assembly is able to resume its functions.”

Despite its disagreement, Kalu said the ruling will be respected by the House of Representatives pending the outcome of the appeal.

The statement reads in part:

"This 9th House believes in the democratic principle of separation of powers; which is why this court ruling poses a problem. It is a core constitutional duty of the National Assembly that the court has attempted to prevent. This is like the National Assembly telling the President not to present the National Budget or like the Executive stopping the Courts from giving a ruling or judgement."

" No arm of the government is supposed to abdicate power to another arm. It is contrary to the doctrine of separation of powers that one arm of government should prevent another arm from carrying out its constitutional duty."

"The Constitution in Section 11(4) is clear on this. Where the House of Assembly of any State is unable to perform its functions by reason of the situation prevailing in that State, the National Assembly may intervene and take over the legislative functions of that House until such a time as the House of Assembly is able to resume its functions."

"It is no coincidence that this particular duty of the National Assembly to take over a State House that is unable to function falls under the section of the Constitution that deals with *Public Order and Public Security".

"This is a matter of restoring public order and security in Edo State and the National Assembly has to perform its constitutional duty. It should not be a question for debate."

"Now maybe the courts can (if they find reason after the take over) say that the take over was wrong based on their own interpretation of section 11 but not to preempt a constitutional role which is Sancrosanct."

"Surely the doctrine of ripeness is applicable here. In some democratic climes Judicial restraint, which is procedural approach to the exercise of judicial review, urges judges to refrain from deciding legal issues, and especially constitutional ones, except where the decision is necessary in resolving a concrete dispute between adverse parties."

" As a substantive approach , it urges judges considering constitutional questions to grant substantial deference to the views of the elected arms of Government and invalidate their actions only when constitutional limits have clearly been violated. "

"The National Assembly will surely appeal the ruling but for now we must respect it."

BREAKING!!! Nigerian Soldiers Kill Three Police Officers , Injure Others

The Nigerian police on Wednesday lost three of its members after soldiers opened fire on them, Igbere TV has learnt.


The police announced the killing of the three officers and severe injuries on other personnel.

The ugly incident happened along Ibi-Jalingo Road, Taraba State, police said. The officers were of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT).

Felix Adolije, an assistant police superintendent, led the officers to the state to arrest a suspected kidnap kingpin whom the police identified as ‘Alhaji Hamisu.’

The police officers “came under sudden attack and serious shooting by soldiers of the Nigerian Army,” police spokesperson, Frank Mba, said in a statement.

The officers were taking Mr Hamisu to the Command Headquarters in Jalingo when the soldiers opened fire on them “despite sufficient proof that they are police personnel on legitimate duty,” the police said.

A civilian was also killed alongside the inspector and two sergeants by the soldiers, while an undisclosed number of others sustained injuries.

“The soldiers thereafter released the handcuffed suspect, Alhaji Hamisu, who is now on the run,” the police said.

The police identified Mr Hamisu as a notorious kidnap kingpin who has been on the police wanted list for his alleged complicity in several high-profile kidnap cases, including the recent abduction of an oil dealer in Taraba State.

The oil dealer, who was not named in the police statement, paid N1 million to regain his freedom, police said.

An assistant inspector-general has been sent to the state to coordinate treatment of the injured police officers. The remains of the deceased have been deposited in the morgue.

Inspector-General Muhammad Adama has ordered an urgent investigation into “the bizarre and unfortunate incident,” Mr Mba, a deputy police commissioner, added in the statement.
