Isoko were always independent of Urhobo. Every single colonial document recorded Isoko different from Urhobo. So don't make it look like Isoko pulled out of Urhobo. They were never part of the Urhobo union, even though a few Isoko persons played prominent role in UPU in the past, just as Clark Edwin despite being Ijaw, played a role in UPU of the old because his town Kiagbodo, even though are Ijaw claiming, speak Urhobo as first language because of their early entanglement with Olomo people. Okpe people have many denials who will tell you openly that they are not Urhobos. The current Okpe traditional leaders might be pro Urhobo because of benefits from UPU, but what do you think would happen if a foreign force invades Urhobo land and retires the current traditional rulers while making the ones denying Urhobo tag the new rulers of Okpe or giving the current rulers ultimatum to either accept being non Urhobo or abdicate their thrones? Thats exactly what happened in Igboids areas of Rivers state. For example, Eze Ogbuehi Francis Ellah became a pariah in Ogbaland at the hands of FG sponsored Igbo denials there, because he refused to end alliance with Igbo union. |
Yujin:Let me give you an insider information. The current Igbanke mainstream are breaking away from Ika tag. Their politicians and their lackeys in Edo government led by Gloria Adagbon are pushing for establishment of Igbanke ethnic nationality, distinct from Ika. The idea is that claiming Ika is making them outsiders in Edo state, and tha their claims to Ika doesn't sit well with the Binis whose Bininization drive on Igbanke are on steroids. Igbankes also feel left out and not being carried along by Ikas in Delta state. So any Igbanke that tells you he is Igbanke, is actually political. Because that's the current political decision of the people. The apolitical ones among them will tell you that they are Ika. |
kollinzgee:Itsekiri was at no time in history grouped as a Yoruba subgroup. They have always maintained their independence from the Yoruba Union from the very beginning. Ijebu also maintained their independence at the beginning but the emergence of Awolowo an Ijebu man as Yoruba leader, changed the Ijebu disposition towards Yoruba union pre independence. |
Blackking98:Its not same. Oro, Annang, Obolo, Ibibio, Efik, have always maintained and insisted on independence from each other from colonial days and all colonial documents recorded them as independent groups. This wasn't same for Ikwerre and co. They were always comfortable in Igbo skin until 1970. |
Oghene1st:Stop writing trash. Isoko has always been independent of Urhobo since colonial times. They started asserting their distinction from Urhobo to the colonial masters. This wasn't the same with the Igboids in Delta and Rivers. The equivalent of Igbo vs Igboids would Urhobo vs Okpe. Okpe recently are seeking independence from Urhobo. |
Logycs:Lol! Your ignorance stinks. Ever heard of the Nri Kingdom, Aro confederacy? You know nothing. Bini is a mushroom empire who had advantage of Portuguese supplied weaponry over her western Igbo and Eastern Yoruba(Owo and Akure) neighbors. It was a good head start you made count but was soon lost when everyone else acquired the white man weapons. Even Ubulu uku walloped Bini in war. The British took just 3days day to ransack Bini, captured the weak Oba and sent him on exile in Calabar. The Western Igbos were even more difficult to conquer. Powered by the Isu mba fulu ogu ju nni of Igbo uzo in Anioma, the "Aya Ekumeku" of the western Igbos lasted for years and until the end of it, the British couldn't exercise dominion over western Igbo.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ekumeku_Movement In the entire Nigeria, the British met the greatest documented resistance in Igboland, both Western and Eastern Igboland. Its,not by claiming mushroom empire that can't resist foreign power. |
Emmanuelcann:You are an Etsako? Cool. Then stick with your Edo brothers. Try and get the Urhobos and Isokos if you can, they are your Edo people. Remove your eyes from Igbo speaking lands. Igbo tribes have perfect understanding with each other. Its easier for an Ikechukwu from Ebonyi to relate with an Ikechukwu from Ogwashi uku. I don't understand why you Edoids, Igala and Ijaw are interested in annexing Igbo speaking groups. Why would you want such? How can you communicate with them in Kporakpo meetings? Pidgin English? ![]() Come on! Its not cool. |
Logycs:Pa Iduwe from Agbor is of the opinion that until the Bini met the Portuguese and acquired guns with which they hunted for slaves East (Anioma) and West(Parts of Yoruba) , Bini was just a kingdom not more powerful than Agbor. Bini empire was a Portuguese creation. Your empire was conquered by the British within a day. Arochukwu fought for a full year with the British before losing, it took British years to conquer Igboland. You want to claim Nigerian victory during the civil war ? You want to hide behind that and claim victor? ![]() You are obviously not well oriented. So Anioma were not your people when you went around killing and pointing them out to the Nigerian soldiers to murder in Bini city during the Igbo pogrom? When Ojukwu appointment Dr Okonkwo as the administrator of Midwest region and you all started shouting of Igbo nepotism, so Okonkwo stopped being an Edo man then? How many of you accepts that Nzeogwu is Edo and not Igbo. Or don't you know he is Anioma too? ![]() You have no brothers in Anioma, you know it that they are not your brothers, you are just looking for a people to rule over, like your empire building fathers did in the past. You are stuck in the past. Biafra troops over ran Bini in few days on our way to Lagos. Bini is never our problem. And we don't consider you enemies or friends. You just have to face Edo state and leave Ndiigbo in Delta state for that status quo to remain. |
Logycs:What lesson? The war was Biafra vs the world. And no igbo man ever claimed lands without aboriginal Igbo speakers as part of Igboland. Isn't it Ironic that an Edo like you whose ancestors acquired weapons from Portuguese slave masters that enabled you to invade these Igbo speaking communities and forcefully annex them into your dominion are here today talking about Igbo being land grabbers because we are telling you that your land grabbing empire days are long gone and that you should forget about those Igbo speaking communities because any further attempt at resuscitation of your empire will be resisted by Ndiigbo in SE, except in Anioma communities where the people willfully accept to be slaves of Oba for a second time? Move on brother, you can't even convince the Esan and Afemai to accept the empire again, but you want to try your luck with Ndiigbo in Delta state? We will be watching you. |
Emmanuelcann:You are not making sense. Language is the first marker of shared identity especially when no colonial force is at play. Nope. There are no infusion of Edo words in Onitsha or Enuani. Its just in Ika. And many of those words are shared words between them and Edo, for all we know, they could have been the ones that influenced the Edos with those words and not the other way round. Edo people that live close to Anioma also have their own Edo languages infiltrated with Igbo words from Anioma, does that now make them non Edoid? The answer is no! Your logic is flawed. So you have no point. When two linguistic groups meet at the border, there is usually cross exchange from each other, its never one sided. If you are claiming that Anioma living close to Edo are no longer Igbos because they borrowed few words from Edo neighbors, then you must also accept that their Edo neighbors are no longer Edo, because they borrowed Igbo words from Anioma. But unfortunately, you lots are hypocritical and can't think critically. Now know this. Igbo is a conglomerate of related tribes United by the fact that they share dialects of a big language whose mutual intelligibility exists in a straight line pattern. The closer two Igbo groups are , the greater the mutual intelligibility of their dialects and vice versa. For example. An Enugu person who isn't well travelled would struggle to understandspoken Ukwuani at first time, because of the difference in intonation between Ukwuani Igbo and his own version igbo, caused by the great distance between Ukwuani and Enugu. He would need a period of adjustment to familiarize himself with how Ukwuani pronounce common Igbo words. Its not same as a non Igbo trying to learn Ukwuani from the scratch. But an Oguta man in IMO state and an Ogbaru man in Anambra state who are the Igbos in SE that are direct neighbors to Ukwuani person, understand Ukwuani people 100percent. This because the advantage of proximity have allowed them to get conversant to the Ukwuani way of speaking Igbo, so much that their own way of speaking Igbo now mirror Ukwuani. Now, the Orlu neighbors of Oguta in Imo understand Oguta, while we in Idemili understand Ogbaru. The Okigwe neighbors or Orlu understand Orlu, just as Ihiala in Anambra neighbors of Orlu understand Orlu. The Ihiala are understood by the Nnewi, Orumba and Aguata people in Anambra, while the Okigwe are understood by the Lokpanta in Abia , who are neighbors to Enugu people and who Enugu people understand his dialect. So if you have a room of Igbos made up of Ukwuani, Oguta, Ogbaru, Orlu, Okigwe, Enugu, Lokpanta, Ihiala, Nnewi, Idemili, Ezza( Ebonyi) Igbos. The Oguta and Ogbaru will happily chat in their local lects with the Ukwuani guys, while the other Igbos will chat wih the Ogbaru and Oguta to get the gist. We will all still depend on the Enugu guys to chat up the Ezza guy and reply to us in Enugu dialect. This is how It works for any big Ethnic group. And that's why there are usually artificially created central dialect that everyone is expected to learn and understand easily, to ease communication amongst all groups. In Igbo, this central dialect is called Igbo Izugbe. Everyone understand Izugbe, including Ukwuani people. By the way. No Anambra man from Idemili axis struggle to understand Enu ani(Aniocha/Oshimili) dialect. Its identical to how we speak. Igbos are not Jews. We are ancient black race. NK is entitled to his opinions. But no Igbo tribe or clan other than Aguleri have history of migration from Israel. |
davidnazee:Edo territories? Are you for real? ![]() You are a comedian. I tell you. Anioma lands belong to Ndi Anioma. And if in the end Nigeria breaks up, and Anioma especially Enuani chooses to stay with SE in a new country. You can be rest assured that they would be doing so with their land. If Edo dare to raise a whimper, Ndiigbo will descend on and finish you off. You better mind yourselves and stop the jokes already. Inukwa Edo territories on top someone else's land. Are you in 15th century or what? Why are you lots this demonic. Imagine if you were a majority group what you would do, if you habour this mindset even as a minority. |
donstan18:Ndiigbo in NL dey fall hand. Common sense should tell that no Igbo will say this about another Igbo. See how easy it was for this impostor to get you guys fighting each other. What happened to simple digging through his profile history? Like seriously, Ndiigbo, iberibe unu eruola udiri a?
|
Logycs:What are you on about. You don't want Igbos in the East to beat together with their kin and kiths in Delta, because you want them for yourself? Are you listening to yourself? Why can't you be content with you fellow Edo people? Can you communicate with an Anioma person without using English? Or you intend making them learn your Bini language to recreate your empire again? Dennis Osadebay was an active member of Igbo State Union. Uwaechue Ralph from Anioma was the president of Ohanaeze Ndiigbo for eight years. Hon. Ebigwe is a high ranking member of Ohanaeze Ndiigbo now and he is from Anioma. Obaseki is Anioma, so? He went to Bini and threw away his Igbo language and assimilated as a Bini person, does that now mean that Anioma should become one with Bini and throw away kinship with their Igbo speaking kins in the East. An Igbo man is currently a senator in Italy and hold Italian citizenship. He even supports the racist Italian government. does it now mean that Igbos are one with Italians when we can't both communicate using our mother tongue? Not everyone in SE is pro seccession, so leave secession out of it for now. My point is that Igbo exists on both sides of River Niger. And no matter all the odds stacked up against Igbo unity, encouraged by the likes of Edo, Ijaw and Igala who are looking to capitalize on current weak political state of the Igbo in Nigeria to annex Igbo speaking groups, we will prevail in the end. Because in the end, birds of same feathers will always stick together. |
Logycs:Your empire of blood and gore is gone. Your subjects if they were one in the past were freed and you yourselves were subjected under the British empire and made minorities. Move on Biko. Dennis Osadebay who coined the word Anioma was one of the main pillars of Igbo State Union before the war, and founders of Ohanaeze Ndiigbo post civil war. The Asagba of Asaba is currently a grand patron of Ohanaeze Ndiigbo. You can't be speaking of empire in 21st century. Not cool at all. |
Chris525:Language in the end will count. Because nothing preserves history more than language. So saying language, especially first language and mother tongue is not identity is dubious when you are fighting tooth and nail to make them drop their own language for yours to unify them. Language uniformity offers unity and a sense of natural and not forced union. Language uniformity is so important that the biblical God had to create multitude of languages to divide the men trying to build a tower into the sky. Without a common language, it's impossible to have a viable union. This is why artificial countries create a common lingual franca to unite everyone. You Edo, Igala and Ijaws trying to capitalize on Igbo loss of power post civil war to annex Igbo speaking groups unto yourselves in hope to swell your numbers, must know that this state of affairs will not last for long. Eventually your time will be up. |
Logycs:The map is meaningless. I can't make anything out of it. Igbanke is Igboid. There are no two ways about it. |
Logycs:You lack education. There was Eastern and Western Igbo. The Western Igbo were first in Southern Nigeria with Eastern Igbo, until 1938 when the southern Nigeria was divided into Eastern and Western regions. In western region, the western Igbos were in Benin province (Ika and Enuani) together with Edos, while the rest ( Ukwuani/Ndokwa) were in Warri Province. When Midwest was carved out, they became known as Midwest Igbos, and one of them, in the person of Dennis Osadebay became the first premier of the new Midwest region. Chukwuma Nzeogwu an Igbo from Midwestern region became the leader of the so called Igbo coup. After the war,Midwest became renamed to Bendel, and the Midwestern Igbos were now called Bendel Igbos. But the Bendel Igbos and the Edoids (Urhobo, Isoko), Itsekiri and Western Ijaw, complained of Bini domination in Bendel state. So the Del was removed from Bendel, and Delta state was created. The Benin chose to rename their state Edo state. The Igbos were now called Delta Igbos, until they evolved a new name pioneered by Dennis Osadebay called Anioma. So today , we call them Anioma or Delta Igbos. The evolution was = Western Igbos - Midwestern Igbos -Bendel Igbos(Ika Igbos) - Delta Igbos- Anioma. So yes. There have always been Igbos in both banks of the River Niger, just as there have always been Ijaws on both banks. |
Logycs:No one ever recorded Igbanke as Edo. Precolonial maps recorded them and the rest of Delta North as Western Igbo. The Linguists that recorded their language as Igboid are not stupid, they are professionals who do more with facts and less with sentiments or concocted and distorted oral stories. Grow up. |
Chris525:There is not a single community in SE speaking an Edoid language. What we have are some communities in SE who are Igbo speaking but with delusional and irrational stories of migrations from Bini. Additionally, Igbanke are not settlers in those lands. They just had their land carved into Edo state instead of Delta state like the rest of Igbo speaking communities in the old Asaba division, because they were always scared of Agbor domination and chose to pitch their tent with Edo. Additionally, Ogbemudia who is Bini but whose mother was Igbanke also played a big role in Igbanke being carved into Edo state instead of Delta like the rest of the Ika speaking groups. |
Revolva:Mouthpiece in Igala is "Ukomu" no? I never said that Onu is not an Igala title. I'm actually arguing that it is. What I'm also arguing is that it means "lord" or King. And that it is a cognate of "Olu" seen in Yoruba. Maybe you need to look up the word "cognate" in linguistics. For example, the Igala word for land "Ane", is a cognate to Igbo word for land, ie "Ana", "Ani" "Ala" and "Ali",depending on part of Igboland involved. |
AmuDimpka:I didn't say it's Yoruba. I said its cognate of the Yoruba word "Olu". Onu means Lord/King in Igala Olu means Lord in Yoruba. Igala is a Yoruboid language. |
AmuDimpka:Your behavior is exactly in order and more Igbos should be groomed to act as such to any Ikwerre man found claiming Igbo. If the Ikwerre claiming Igbo feels embarrassed, he should take his fight to the floor of Ogbakor Ikwerre, if he loses there, he should take it to his town union to separate from Ogbakor Ikwerre, if he fails too, then he should accept his non Igbo tag in peace,in the knowledge that majority of his people took the decision for him. It's that simple. They shouldn't be allowed to eat their cake and have it. We are not fools. |
AmuDimpka:Finally we can agree on a thing. Good. Thanks. ![]() See, we are real brothers. We quarrel and reconcile because we are Igbo men. You will never share same level of understanding with an Ikwerre man, because he is simply not an Igbo. |
AmuDimpka:Ikwerres are opportunists. They claim Igbo when they are outside Rivers state, so that they can benefit from Igbo unionism. I have many of them as friends and I know them very well. I also tell the truth. The same Ikwerre man in Lagos sucking up to Igbo union there to gain favours, brotherhood and succour, equally has uncles, mothers, sisters, fathers in his village in Emohua who are rabidly Igbophobic. Also, that your Ikwerre friend once back to Rivers state, would dine and move with them( his Igbophobic people) and start singing different songs of Bini to you, once he wants to assume political post in his home land, because he knows his people will only accept him when he comes to them as an Igbophobic Ikwerre man. You should be wise enough to know when a people or person is playing you and using you to achieve their own aims. An Ikwerre only claims Igbo when he has something to gain by doing so. And it's usually a transient, parasitic and opportunist attachment. You should not fall for it |
MelesZenawi:Lol! |
AmuDimpka:Voice in Igala is "Ukomu" and not "Onu". Onu in Igala has nothing to do with voice or spokes person. This whole argument is becoming redundant. I never said that Igbos don't bear onu. But you have to know that Onu as found in Ogbonnaya onu, Onuora (people's voice) , Onunkwo( Voice of Nkwo) OnuIgbo( Voice of Igbo), etc. Is not pronounced like the Onu in Onu Ebu and they don't have same meaning. |
AmuDimpka:I don't know who you are fighting. I'm an Igbo from Idemili North Anambra. And we over here don't also care about Ikwerre. But we reasonably would not want an Ikwerre from Elele whose people are part of the Igbophobic Ogbakor Ikwerre organization, taking the Igbo tag as and when they feel like. Their must be a certain level of rigidity attached to who should and who shouldn't be called Igbo. You can't have an Ikwerre whose people are anti Igbo allowed free access to Igbo tag. It's an insult to our intelligence and takes away any prestige the Igbo tag has. Ohanaeze are a bunch of unserious people , which is exactly why they have Ikwerres in their midst. Little wonder they are not in anyway interested in protecting Igbo interests. Because if they do, then judgement must start from home, and that means expelling Ikwerres and other Bininods in their midst from the group. A group should have a strict membership to hold any relevance. As it stands. Ndiigbo have none, which shouldn't be so. But some of us are trying our best to correct that mistake by jolting our people back to their senses. |
AmuDimpka:Onu in Igala is a cognate of Olu in Yoruba. It's nothing to do with voice. Go and research it. Igala is not called a Yoruboid language for no reason. |
AmuDimpka:Whether you like it or not. Igbo is a conglomerate of related yet independent tribes and towns who are united by mutually intelligible dialects of a language that runs in a continuum as you travel the length and breadth of the area and by common culture, history and life outlook. If any tribe in this conglomerate wants to pull away and stand on its own. Then it's free to do so. But it must be ensured that they by no means benefit from the Union by the rest of the tribes that choose to stay with the union. As Ikwerre on the majority have decided that they are better of without the Igbo union. It is the duty of the rest of the remaining tribes in the union to ensure that no Ikwerre person under any guise or form benefits from the union, since Ikwerre don't contribute to the union. This would mean that no Ikwerre persons should be allowed to identify as Igbo or represent Igbo. If for any reason an Ikwerre person likes the Igbo union and wants Ikwerre to be a member. Such Ikwerre person must take his fight to the floor of apex Ikwerre organization, the Ogbakor Ikwerre and win the battle there by making them accept wholly Ikwerre commitment and membershipbof the Igbo union by issuing a public notice. If he can't win the battle against the Ogbakor Ikwerre, then such person should get his own town union , for example Elele town union, to publicly announce dissociation from Ogbakor Ikwerre and all she represents and reaffirm commitment to the Igbo nation. Only after this, would an Elele man be fully accepted as an Igbo and accorded full rights as nwafor. Of course. Elele people will not do this. They will simply toy with your small brains, telling you they are Igbos, while they remain fully represented in Ogbakor Ikwerre, a well known Igbo phobic and anti Igbo organization. This is not rocket science. It's about time Ndiigbo stopped sentimentality and embrace pragmatism. |
AmuDimpka:Onu in Igala is a cognate of Olu in Yoruba. Onu igala sounds more like Onu for neck in Igbo than Onu for mouth. I hope you know that? My take is that the Igala migrants and refugees in Ebu were able to outnumber the aboriginal Igbos there and hence were able to seize the control of the monarchy of the town and hence retained their Igala language as first language while being bilingual. In the neighboring Illah where Igalas also migrated to, the Igbo aboriginals outnumbered them and retained the throne, hence the Igalas were totally and completely assimilated in Illah only heard about in exaggerated and distorted origin stories as is norm in Igbo speaking realm outside SE. I have no doubt that you are an IPOB member. You lots are always quick to throw expletives around and too lacking in knowledge of Igbo and her relationship with aggressive minorities neighbours. Which is why you lots are ignorantly proposing a Frankenstein monster country with the minorities (Edos, Ijaws, and Igala) who are not only Igbophobic, but are actively eying and working overnight to assimilate Igbo speaking groups and territories and shrink our already small land mass more. You lots are so blind that your ways defy logic and common sense. |
AmuDimpka:As high as 48% of British people voted to be part of EU. Yet the 52% who wanted out had their way. And even though the 48% would want to identify with EU, the EU will not accept them, and would make sure they are treated same way as their 52% brothers who voted against EU inclusion. This is how you run a Union. It must be made in such a way that no group gets to eat their cake and still have it, lest the union becomes useless. You lots claiming and accepting few Ikwerres who accept Igbo tag, even when you are well aware that the majority of Ikwerre people are not only against Igbo Union, but are voraciously Igbophobic are doing harm to Igbo as an ethnic group. Ogbakor Ikwerre the apex Ikwerre organization is anti Igbo. All Ikwerre town unions including Elele are members of Ogbakor Ikwerre and have representatives there. If they have issues with Ogbakor Ikwerre stance on Ikwerre not being Igbo, they should go and make it there and publish their communique on dailies. Ikwerre is not Igbo. It's the duty and obligation of any Igbo nationalist who wants Igbo progress to hold to heart this truth and always proclaim it. |

I notice the itshekiris too deny yorubas even though the similarity is 90%.
