OfficialDJ:He's not necessarily wrong. The Toyota makes better sense for Nigeria. The minute a "mechanic" starts working on that car, it won't be the same. And even a dealer, though expensive, I found aren't even that competent. In fact you won't really enjoy that car esp. with the roads. Believe me, I had something similar that I held on to for too long that made the dealership a ton of money repairing it. I ended up getting a Lexus SUV that I'm going to sell when the factory warranty expires. It sux that Nigerians terrible infrastructure forces you to chose practicality. I assume it's ur 2nd or 3rd car, if so I'd garage it when not in use. Enjoy. |
mastermaestro:Give him justice? He killed someone. He isn't in jail. Didn't offer support to family and is here complaining that he lost goods. smh. |
olatuns2017:The responsibility was yours before you opened your mouth and stuck your foot in it to do your own research. But like I said, the irony of the person fomenting misinformation talking about misinformation. Someone posted it earlier. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtmtULUy-Jw Now go sit down face the wall and be embarrassed. |
olatuns2017:This comment is insulting and disrespectful to those that died. You know there is a video of the dead people under the truck before it got burned. You should look at it and moderate/regulate yourself. The irony; someone posting misinformation taking about regulations against misinformation, |
mekaboy:No need for compensation why? Please explain. The nonsense that comes out of people's mouths never fails to amaze me. The liability is between the truck driver/owner and the people he killed/property he destroyed. If some random person decides to burn down that truck, the liability does not shift. The truck/driver owner can go after the person/persons who burned his truck, but that does not mitigate the fact the truck mowed over those people or change it's liability to them. In fact if the truck caught fire from the fuel from the damaged fuel tanks and everything was lost would they still not have to pay? |
This is what a failure in government looks like. There is no functioning country where these types of accidents happen this regularly. 1.) In a functioning government Commercial vehicles this size generally have to pass inspection to be on the road. I'm sure this one didn't. 2.) That truck wasn't maintained. Not only should it have regular brakes, but it should have emergency brakes just so something like this wouldn't happen. 3.) The truck was going too fast. Looking at the way it crushed all those vehicles, even with functioning brakes it was going too fast. This is negligent homicide. The driver should have been arrested and in jail. If a company owned the vehicle, they should be held criminally and financial responsible as well. But, seeing that this is Nigeria and none of that would happen, I understand why they burned that truck down. Edit: In fact in the US that truck would have been impounded and everything held until the investigation was completed as to what happened. In fact I don't think there would have been any situation where that driver would have been able to just load the cows on to another truck and continue with his/her business. And it's sad that a lot of people on here just see this as an accident. Nigeria has fully warped the value you place on life and your view of what responsibilities people should be held accountable for. |
lexxwiz:You would have compensated the family how exactly? Are you Jesus that can resurrect the dead? It wasn't an accident. Brakes just don't fail. You didn't maintain your trailer and it killed someone. That was a cost you accepted by deciding to save money and not maintaining your vehicle. And after that you are on here (not in jail) complaining about your lost goods. Normally I don't believe in Jungle justice, but based on this post, you make me want to turn a blind eye. |
Asquare84:You should be happy that someone is trying to stand up for your useless self. Nigeria is burning and this what your concern is? |
Nigeria... We are celebrating roads in the 21st century? smh. |
This is stupid. The government should face itself for it's decision to shoot protestors at a tollgate in one of the affluent areas of one of the most so called developed areas. Who wants to work/live in a place where there is no safety. Leaving aside how immoral it was, I was amazed at how unthought out that decision was. Yes, I really want to invest millions of dollars in a country w/ a government that could make that kind of decision. This is the US travel advisory for Nigeria https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/nigeria-travel-advisory.html "Reconsider travel to Nigeria due to COVID-19, crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, and maritime crime. Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory." |
Nigeria is too unstable politically. And that shooting at Lekki tollgate exasperated that. How can anyone seriously invest in a country where it's government can do something that monumentally stupid (especially in an area brimming with ex/re-pats and foreign investment). |
If the story is true, the mistake that was made was not having an attorney go with your father when he returned. I have 0 faith that the Nigerian Police wouldn't put out a fake list of escapees(maybe ones they already have in custody) just to be able to say they caught them in a little while. |
If this were the US, I would say hell no, wouldn't give up my privacy for this. In Nigeria, it's a tougher call. On one side is the need to account for who is in the country for security and economic (taxes etc.) reasons on the flip side is the lack of trust in the government esp. after the EndSars protest. Tough call. |
emmanuelewumi:I understand it's a legal contract. The issue is the enforcement mechanism if someone decides to disregard that legal contract. In the US the eviction process can take up to 6 months. Unfortunately in these situations contracts are only as good as the enforcement mechanism. And as I said I don't know the tenant rights/laws in Lagos. |
emmanuelewumi:Admitandtly I don't know Lagos tenant law. But would a tripartite agreement help if a tenant simply decides to stay even after their term ends? I would probably condition the sale on the seller emptying the house. |

Cyberknight:Lol.. Are Dom accounts insured for higher amounts? |
Cyberknight:Ok; regarding the 250k reference. I couldn't find any detailed numbers on the NDIC site. Agreed that 250k is not a small amount in the US. On the other hand N500k is around US1,000-1,500 depending on the exchange rate the past 4 years. That still seems inadequate. I understand it is the minimum you will get, but given the potential for staggering amount of corruption in Nigeria, would you be comfortable saying that if a bank failed it wouldn't fail catastrophically? Anyhow, for those that have >N5million. How are you storing your money? |
This is long.. I don't think I've ever had a bad first date, I generally do a lot of pre-filtering before that first date (don't like spending needless cash). But there was this one date.. I met this girl at a networking event. And she was BAAD. I mean stunning. Think about a woman you consider fine, she was finer than that. Beyond that, she had that classy, sassy swag. I watched her from the side of my eye, as guy after guy shot their shot. I was trying to figure how to approach her, when she started talking to another girl I knew. I slid over chatted up my friend and introduced myself. We joked, laughed and chilled for a while. My ride wanted to leave so I asked for her number. She smiled, took a second then took my phone and put her number in. I called two days later(though I wanted to call the next day). We instantly hit it off. She was smart, witty, funny and adventurous. We talked about her career (which had brought her to my city), travel, her love of wine etc.. It was clear she liked the "finer" things in life.. Cool. We spoke every day all week. We decided to meet up on a Sat. night at 7pm. I was actually nervous planning the date. But, I knew exactly where I wanted to take her. There was this hott(at the time) sexy restaurant/bar in this trendy hotel near my place. I took women there when I wanted to impress. It had a live Jazz band during dinner and turned into a lounge with a DJ after. There were two rooms. I reserved a booth in the back room (better privacy, ambiance). But weird thing, earlier that Sat. she called me and told me a friend of hers had a bday party there that same night. Not surprising it was one of the trendier spots in my city. I thought she wanted to cancel, but she said she just may have to pop in. I got there 10 minutes late, couldn't be too early. She was more stunning than when I initially saw her. As I walked in she was seated at the bar. I sat next to her as our table was prepared. She told me there was this guy flirting w/ her even though she told him she was on a date. At that moment the bar tender gave her a bottle of Veuve Clicquot, sent from that guy. She was pissed; she asked for 2 glasses, popped it, poured it and slid a glass to me. I was in love. We took it to our table, ate, drank more and laughed all night. At about 11 pm, it turned into the lounge. I ordered another bottle and we drank some more, got up and danced some. We were having an amazing time. 1 hour blurred to 2 then 4. Her phone had been ringing for a little while, but now it was blowing up. She checked the messages and told me her friends were there. She asked if I wanted to pop in with her. We walked over to the first room where there was a group having a party. As we walked over, I noticed my friend sitting in with the party. And what happened next was weird. She walked over and surprising to me gave him a big hug. A familiar hug. I wasn't sure what was going on, so I was in observation mode. He was surprised to see me as well, we hugged and he asked us to sit down. She sat next to him. She was becoming increasingly uncomfortable. He looked as confused as I felt. She told him we were just there having dinner. He asked us to stay. Their section was live, the champagne was flowing... so I agreed. I walked over to my table to close out my bill. As I walked back, in the corner of my eye I noticed his hand on her knee. Hmmm... I asked her who he was. She said they were just friends. I knew him, he was dating a couple of other people.. I wasn't sure what was going on. But, my motto is to sit back and let it play out, plus I was having a great time with a gorgeous woman. It was a blast. We were both tipsy. The night ended, I said bye to my friend. I was too tipsy to drive so went to find the concierge to pay and have them park my car overnight. As I left, they chatted and hugged. It was a beautiful night so we walked to my place still tipsy, laughing and joking. She left the next morning. She wanted to go to church, run to the office and then buy groceries and come by to make me dinner. Why not. About noon, my friend called. The story he told me, chai! So, he met her when she had just moved to my city. Ok. The next part though. They had been dating for a couple of months and were currently dating. Chai. It gets even better.. That night, that party, was supposed to be a date for them they had planned for a week. LOL. It was his friends. She scheduled two dates at the same time and same place (Clearly she had planned that one of us was going to go home sad) . I laughed at all this and then caught myself. I felt bad for him, but he should have pulled me aside that night. He asked me what happened between us? I didn't have the heart, so I told him I just walked her to her car. I'm not sure he believed me. I also told him that we were also on a date. She clearly was looking for an upgrade. I cancelled dinner with her and we never spoke again. Months later, I told him what had happened. We both laughed. Secretly, I respected her balls, esp still wanting to come over that night knowing he was my friend. I always wonder, what would have happened if she had met me first? |
DemonInvoker:This is a very rape-y sounding story. She was wise that she didn't enter your place. What made you write this, makes you look worse than her. |
mmadu4:Simple rule, if you bring or ask to bring a friend on a first date, it's over, I'll even walk out if that happens. And if you ask for an extra order to take home during a first date, it's over as well. |
OgogoroFreak:Let's set aside that the naira at 1000 would be tragic for the country. This N485 was/is in the midst of a global pandemic and recession coupled with really low demand for oil. Even the last time (maybe 4 years ago) it went up to ~500, it crept back down to ~380. Granted I'm not confident in the Government being able to set a climate for better economic development. But N1000 seems like a leap. What factors do you think will get it to N1000? |
Some good information here. Read a couple of posts on Deposit insurance and assumed it was something more substantial. I read a post where someone said it was 250k per bank. That's seems very inadequate. I couldn't find the answer on the FDIC site, does anyone have a link to the info. If it is that low, what do people do if they have more money than that. Maybe, I'm just seeing the doom in it. |
ahiboilandgas:What are they buying those denominations for? Is there a place to check the exchange rate for these low denominations? And do abokis(why did this forum change "aboki" to "northerners" ) have a lot of these low denominations (5k US plus)? If you were traveling to the US, why would you care if your money was in lower denominations vs. higher ones? US banks accept them all. Something seems missing. |
condomuser:Do you really think the N800/$ is going to happen? How could Nigeria survive that? |
Nice read. Let me know when chapter 2 drops. Do you have a title for the book? Or are you writing a book of short stories? |
There is fault to go all around. This started from your "somewhat shady" business dealings. You shouldn't have involved your g/f in that dealing. And when you did, you should have checked and double checked the recipient. Every time I send money I check the name and number twice and maybe a 3rd time esp. if it something over 10k. The parents shouldn't have spent the money without verifying who sent it and for what. But 1.)Someone accidentally deposited the money into their account, they didn't seek it 2.) The parents didn't know it was your money. So, it wasn't done to hurt you. They might have spent the money (so poor and have debts, and rather owe the bank than other people) or they can just be lying to get you to feel sad for them and give them the money (it being Easter and all). But, not knowing which one would make me think hard about what a future relationship with the wife and family would look like. And lastly, considering the initial mistake was yours, calling the police is drastic and uncalled for in my opinion. I understand that 100k is a lot. But you should have considered that if you really do love your girlfriend, is that 100k really worth the damage it would cost to her (even if you did end up deciding to break up over this)? I would explain even exaggerate the situation to them, that this money was needed for a business investment and you have all the rest equally tied up in your business. And leave it there and see what they do. I think you'll get a reasonable understanding of who they are and if you truly are considering marrying this girl, that understanding is worth 100k. |
Nothing screams failed state more than the head of that state going to another country to seek medical care. It's shameful. |
Wallade:She slept with the 3rd party. She is the 1st, her fiancé the 2nd, the ex the 3rd. And she should be equally concerned with the ex trying to embarrass the fiancé/husband at some point. |
Wallade:Nothing stays secret forever. Esp. when a 3rd party is involved. |
prettyheart:You're asking the wrong question. The question should be does your friend understand commitment and is she ready to be married at all? Sleeping with someone esp. an ex any time during a relationship is a tell that there are more issues at work and the relationship isn't healthy but doing it so close to a wedding means the wedding probably shouldn't be happening. There is nothing wrong with taking the time to figure it out. But as a good friend once told me, better to have a broken engagement than a broken marriage. |
