I am not surprised at most of the comments from some posters in this thread. Conformity. Doing or saying something because every other perwon is doing or saying it, without knowing why or what you are even saying. Because, as far as Car Talk is concerned, everyone must be right. Smh! Sometime in 2012. I received a mail from a guy in USA. said I was referred to him by some group of people over there. He needed me to help him purchase some car parts to boost his Peugeot 505 V6 power American spec. He needed me to help him buy the injection ECU and ignition ECU of Some Euro spec 505 V6 tuned aggressively, unlike the American spec 505 V6 with less power. He lived in Europe before where he used 505 V6 with the aggressive power before he relocated to US. He got to US, bought another 505 V6, this time, an American spec, unfortunately with less power. Most Euro spec 505 V6 have 170 hp, while all 505 V6 sold in USA & Canada had 145 hp. The same engine, ZN3J. The only difference is this. The injection ECU & ignition ECU in the 170 hp and 145 hp 505 V6 differ. The injection ECU of 170 hp part number is Bosch 0 280 001 507 (Jetronic), while the 145 hp is Bosch Bosch 0 280 001 506 (Jetronic). Then, the 170 hp ignition ECU part is Bosch 0 227 400 121, while the 145 hp is Bosch 0 227 400 120. Of course, mine have the 170 hp ECUs. Note the difference on the last 3 figures: 506 vs 507 and 120 vs 121. Aside the last 3 figures in each part numbers, the rest of the figures are the same. Now, the guy sent me a link of where the discussion took place. He posted in a forum, that he didn't like how his 505 V6 he bought in US was underpowered, compared to one he owned when he lived in Europe. The forum members explain to him the reason, that the Euro spec had more power than the American spec. They also told him I once mentioned in that forum the difference in the injection and ignition ECU part numbers of the 170 & 145 hp ZN3J powered 505s. Some where of the opinion that ECUs would not be the reason for the higher hp in one than the other. Some believed there could be some differences in the cylinder heads, like the camshafts and the rest, so swapping ECUs would not increase any power, rather he should modify the engine mechanically to gain those extra hp. Well, he went ahead and contacted me off the forum, privately to help him source for the ECUs in mine in Nigeria. He sent me some money, I got him those 507 & 121 ECUs and sent to him. He got the ECUs, swapped them and gave us feed back on the forum, because at that time, I have joined the discussion in that thread in the forum. According to him, the car, or rather, the engine became more responsive at every touch of the accelerator pedal. It became quicker and sharper in acceleration. He excitedly told us in the forum the development how happy he was for deciding to go ahead to try the 170 hp ECUs without modifying any other thing on the car. Though, he said with those 170 hp ECUs, the car would rough idle, but will rev smoothly and responsively when accelerated. But as soon as its on idle, it would start to rough idle. At that point, I told him, from the workshop manual, the ECUs with 170 hp, or rather, the 505 V6 with 170 hp don't run with Catalytic converters and/or oxygen sensors as factory designed. Unfortunately, his have the catalytic converter and oxygen sensor. Though, we advised him to check the fuel pressure and other stuffs, incase they are not good enough to supply what those aggressively designed ECUs needed. To cut the story short, he told us he wouldn't mind those rough idling because the extra power gain was all he wanted and he got it. Probably what he gained was not not up to the 170 hp, but it was good enough for him. Last year, he sent me mail that he had to relocate to Europe again and had to sell the 505. Though I didn't ask if he sold the car with the 170 hp ECUs or with the factory 145 hp incase he would need the 170 hp ECUs again, because he said in the mail that he would search for another 505 V6 as soon as he gets back to Europe. The summary, that something is impossible to you to attain does not make it standard that its impossible. If the guy had conformed to opinions of some forum members, he wouldn't have succeeded. To the topic, I dont know about the 2 BMWs engines and their injection systems. So I can't tell if swapping the engine ECUs of both will make deference. Whether it gained up to the expected hp or not is secondary, because there was change in power. In this case, more power. Of course, if dyno tested, one would know how much it gained. As for the wheel and Tyre sizes, well I really don't know. But I do know that Peugeot 505 V6 Euro spec with 170 hp have factory wheel size of 195/60 R15, while 505 V6 American spec with 145 hp have 205/55 R15 as standard, especially the 1989 model. If it has anything to do with the power, I wouldn't know. Ikenna |
starlingbawa: @IKENNA: please I'd need your expert and thorough opinion on the dangers of knocking off the Thermostat of a Toyota Camry 2000 Model.Yes, it will make your Camry very thirsty, among other things you wont find funny. I have treated similar question sometime in the past. Find it in the link below: https://www.nairaland.com/1006388/camry-99-thermostat-removal/1 Ikenna |

Personal experience. After some years, the hydraulic will turn into something else, I mean, it will become thicker and change colour. Not good for caliper seals, even clutch master and slave cylinders, for manual transmissions. Anyone that doesn't want to experience his brake pedal suddenly hitting the floor without leakage someday, needs to flush his brake fluids every once in a while, even if he/she doesn't want to keep the 2 years recommendation. Last time I checked, brake failure could lead to death and even death of innocent ones on the road. You could play with that, if you wished to. Ikenna. |
Peugeot recommended or instructed hydraulic renewal on the brake systems of all their owners manuals I have seen, once every 2 years. Ikenna |
Peugeot ditched V6 engine long ago. The last V6 engine was in 607, sometime in 2009-2010. Peugeot launched in late 2012, a 1.6 litre petrol turbo engine with 270 hp that average 44 mpg on high-speed. But only mated on 6-speed manual transmission for now, no auto transmission for the engine yet. That's the engine and transmission I would want to let my hands on when its find it's way in Peugeot 508. Ikenna |
@ OmoAkerele, Wow! Lovely pictures! I can see you are more 505 freak than I am. Lol! That 505 SW with ZDJL engine was the last 505 sold in USA & Canada in 1992. Though, it was rolled out in 1989, I think. I still have plans to add another 505 S2 someday, with XN1A engine, including 504 GL (if I can get a rust-free one). Ikenna |
guysmilee134: Good day PSA community, i have a 406 D9 ew12 and i noticed that sometimes when driving the speedometer just suddenly goes to zero, though the car still moves and later after maybe 2mins it comes back on. what could be the problem? thanks! pls Mr Ikenna add me to the whatsapp group 07058372530.The transducer on the differential part of the transmission is the culprit. Its mounted immediately after the hole where the front left (drivers side) CV joint entered the transmission. The transducer cost 5k. I will add you in the WhatsApp lions house. You already miss a lot. That house is hot! Ikenna |

felixmadugba: U sold ur clean 190 at 130k wow!! Abeg fine small car 4 me naa.. Do sumtin 4 ur guy naa.. Na 200k I get cash at hand now.. My probs is I cnt save moni. I hardly saved up dis 200k and I cnt continue.. Please make una help ur guy naa I need more post 4rm u guys thanksThe way you are going, you may end up regretting not entering a joint and blow the 200k on Nkwobi and the rest. I could see that you have no clue what a car is. Do you think its some piece of metal you just put some liquid in fuel tank and drive on? Otherwise, I am trying to understand why you would think any car that cost 200k you like the look is game to you? I attended the school you are in. I had a car too while I was there. I knew what it was to drive to lectures and not queue up struggling for bus. I knew what it was like to maintain a car as a student with pocket money. I knew what it was like struggling to keep a car and still keep your academics before you. Trust me, if what you after is to form big boy, then be ready to see those chics you want to impress, graduate and leave behind waka. Because by the time you spend all the pennies you have trying to keep up with that level by keeping a wrong cat for you on the road, you wont see even N200 extra to buy common handout. What you need is not a car you can afford, at your level. What you need is a car you afford to keep on the road without affecting your mission in that school. You are now considering every car you see cost 200k. Have you even bothered to check about availability of parts in Awka? Or you prefer to be going to Onitsha for every single pin that will be needed to be replaced? Or you it never occurred to you that you will likely spend more than you purchased a car with your first 2-3 months of ownership? You think tokunbo car is new car, not to think of Nigerian used car at your budget? Experience is the best teacher, anyway. Good luck. Ikenna |

Hello house, I opened a Lions Community group on WhatsApp. I will add all house contacts I already have in the group. We can easily reach other via the WhatsApp group, since not all of visit Nairaland often and there could some query or questions regarding your Lion you could ask and I may not have the answer to that, but some other member who owns the same Lion or experienced similar symptom could help you out by telling you how he/she fixed the issue. You could be stranded and quick cry for help in the community could be your saviour. Lets make use of it. The truth is, I can easily be reached via WhatsApp, SMS or call. And I will constantly be sharing my knowledge and tips on how to run these our Lions there. So that Nairaland or not, site crash or not, the community lives on. So, if I don't have your phone number yet, send me WhatsApp message and I will add you in the community. My phone number 08052811236. But if you are not interested in the group, send me a personal message to remove you from the group when I add you. That's if I have your phone number. Ikenna |
murtalaa: Hello Engineer IkennaYou mean ASR or ABS? Anyway, ESP/ASR fault, most times, are brake related. They will go off, once the system detects fault in brake systems. You need a PP2000 scan to detect the cause. Ikenna |
uboma: I dont believe you, period. There's no point lying here. I have been through that route and beyond (to Kano and back) several times. No way can anyone make it to Kaduna from Abuja in just 1hour.I once left Enugu around 7am and got to Lokoja around 9.30am. This is highway that on average takes about 5 hours. Anyone conversant with that road would understand what I mean by getting to Lokoja from Enugu at that hour at the time I started the journey. It all depends on "how the thing dey do you" behind the wheel and what you are driving. I don't like boasting with the kind of aggressive driving I do with my Lions on journeys, because its not something one should be proud of or encourage others to do. Ikenna |
Scyllapatron: thank you so much Ikenna, i will call a mechanic on monday. pls can you educate me more if the smoke was blackish, just in case.Black smoke means "excessive fueling". Not all thirsty running cars are going through excessive fueling. Your car could be consuming more fuel than its designed to, without emitting black smoke. Not all cars that emit black smoke suffer cylinders wash down issue. When excess fuel goes into the combustion chambers via the injectors and intake valves, not all of them will burn during the explosion or combustion stroke. Those that didn't burn will go out through the exhaust as black smoke. But if the excess fuel becomes too much, the unburnt ones will not only go out as black smoke, some will wash down the cylinder or leak down through the rings on the pistons, enter the oil pan and dilute the engine oil. For such situations, the oil level will always be increasing and when the dipstick is pulled out and smelled, it will smell fuel. To cut it short, we have various type of rich running. Each type will damage the emission control sensors or components overtime, like the oxygen sensors and Catalytic converters. Good morning. Ikenna |
ifeanyi83: I'm grateful I found this thread. I'm so in love with the 607 but my folks seem not to support the idea, citing high cost of maintenance and fuel economy as reasons it will not be a good idea, considering the fact that it's my first time buying a car. What do you advice?.They are wrong. Its one of the best Peugeot ever produced. Fuel economy is as good as 406 & 407. They all use the same engine and electrics. The annoyance of the car is the body parts. They are pricey. So, if you must buy the 607, try not to smash it, drive bumper to bumper bad driving habit or drive rough. The other day, someone from Ilorin sent me money to buy a brand new A/C condenser for his 607 with EW12 engine. I checked , and it was exactly the same A/C condenser in 406 & 407 with EW engines. I purchased it 15k and have sent it to him. He is enjoying his 607 A/C now. Forget about what uninformed people tell you about the Lions. Their cars is one of the best thing that could ever happen to you, if you treat them like babies. To cut the story short, 607 is on my next to do list. And I will soon be done with the making of Video of how to own and maintain a Lion. Will be out very soon. I have decided to add Audio CD as well, so that Lion owners could as well plug in, listen and learn these things, over and over again. Now, the question you need to ask is, what year model, engine and transmission should you go for? I would only answer that if you tell me what you want out of a car. Ikenna |
Scyllapatron: She noticed a tick light-blue smoke as she drove, when she stops the smoke puffs more but managed it to get home. This morning the smoke was same colour but became darker as it puffs out. I marched the trottle and everywhere was filled with smoke, with engine sounding weaker than normal sound.I think what the Lion need is physical inspection to truly know what's going on with the engine. If the smoke is not blackish, then I am afraid, we are looking at a mechanical fault that requires a mechanic presence/attention. Ikenna |
Scyllapatron: Good morning Ikenna, pls what could have caused excessive smoke from exhaust-pipe, my wife's 307 all of a sudden started fuming smoke excessively from the exhaust on her way back from work yesterday. What was the colour of smoke she saw and you saw as well when you started the car? Ikenna |
fegeitok001: thanks according to Google maps, is it the one with union high school along the nsukka onitsha road, St. theresa's college road from which ill enter the amangwu road/enugu otukpo roadHa! Me I don't know anything about Nsukka Onitsha road. All this una Map sef! Anyway, I have gotten used to the road that I don't pay attention to some of these details anymore. But I do know Abuja to Lokoja is about 200 km. In fact, its like this: Abuja to Lokoja is about 2 drive. Lokoja to 9th mile Enugu is about 5 hrs drive. You can do less or more. It depends on your speed. Ikenna |
fegeitok001: Abuja to Enugu 410km in 5 hours, roads in good conditionYou will meet a small bad road around Ajaokuta. After that, the rest is smooth. Though, from Otukpo to 9th mile Enugu is not that smooth. I found a smoother route to Enugu in my last trip last week. Abuja-Lokoja-Ajaokuta-Otukpo-Enugu is the safest route to Eastern states. Longer, but safer. I have never used any other route other than that to East. Should take 7-8 hrs, if driven sensibly. Ikenna |
sanishehu: never mind I will be at the meeting on Saturday.Ok. Ikenna |
sanishehu: kAre you in Abuja? Ikenna |
sanishehu: is it something I can do myselfIt depends. Your rear seat needs to be out first, before you can look at it and figure out if its something you can do yourself. ![]() Ikenna |
sanishehu: Hi guys'Check your fuel sender in the fuel tank. Ikenna |
sooperrescue: Hmm, that was a lengthy sermon. In summary, why do Peugeot recommend Esso ATF? Because TOTAL does not have the ATF for their cars. Until recently when they introduced fluide at 42, Total had the fluide 11d that I used in my Renault 18 in Paris in the early 1990s. Go through their website, they dont have any other ATF except Dexron 111, so how can Peugeot recommend ATF from TOTAL that does not have the ability to produce it. I worked with TOTAL for 2 years and in the service sector and I remember when 408 came out, there was unease about the oil it is expected to use. When you listed all those statistics, I was busy searching for the latest brand of Peugeot and all I saw were those government cars, the ones Government buys for their personnel. I have been servicing the 408 of the Nigerian Customs in Abuja until recently and I know what I am talking about. The TOTAL synthetic oils listed in their US subsidiary are not in Nigeria neither the ones in the French subsidiary. And you listed 0w 40 as some of the manufacturer's recommendation. Does TOTAl sell 0w40 in Nigeria? Can a Mercedes Gwagon actually use the Q4x4 15 w 40? You are a guru when it comes to Peugeot repairs, but we study the dynamics of failed engines in the country, why motorists pay a lot to fix their cars meanwhile in other climes, it is easy come easy go. Because there are no standards, we accept whatever junk that are being imported. Why should TOTAL Sticker be on a 408 when they dont have the oil in Nigeria to service the car? These are the list of TOTAL oils.I think you didnt read my post correctly. I would suggest you go back and read it again. Because I have treated some of the things you just raised above. And, it seems you are contradicting yourself. I think you should get and read any of the Peugeot owners manual that covers most of the engines i listed in my previous post. It will help you to fully grasp my point. You said Peugeot does not have ATF when they started using AL4 & AM6 transmissions, right? How come in those same manuals they recommended ESSO ATF for those transmissions, they also recommended or stated TOTAL Fluide AT42 for their Power steering? I thought you said they didnt have ATF at that time? It was not recommended because it wont be good for those transmissions. Will they now recommend what will damage their transmissions just to play solidarity to TOTAL, when ESSO ATF was best suited for the transmission? I really dont understand your point. Because it appears you have some beef with TOTAL, even though its no business of mine. Go back to that chart i posted earlier: temp against required oil grade. Though, personally, I would like TOTAL to also provide their 10W-40 Quartz 7000 in Nigeria. My point has always been, out of all the TOTAL engine oils, few that Peugeot recommended for most of their engines are available in Nigeria. The unavailability of the rest for other brands of cars is no business of mine. If you read that chart well, you will see the Quartz 7000 (15W-50) & Quartz 9000 (5W-40) are ok for Peugeot engines listed in my previous post with Nigeria weather. If that is so, why should i be bothered with the ones that are not available that have nothing to the with those engines or non Peugeot engines. The last time I checked, It has laways been, " To Your Tents O Isreal". Wetin concern me with 0W-40 bikonu? The chart showed that my engines and most Lion engines do not need that in Nigeria. So what gives? ![]() About 408. You seem not to know how we Roar We dont say Peugeot 408 or 607 when it comes to recommended engine oil. We say EW10 or ES9 engine. So, you guys supposed to find out what engine are in those 408s. With that, you will know what oil is recommended for it/them. You saw in my previous post where Peugeot warned against use of 5W-30 in EW12 engine. The information was extracted from 406 owners manual. But you will find the same engine in 407, 607, 807, etc. Meaning, the same instruction applies to the 407, 607, etc with that engine. It also means, you can use TOTAL 9000 (5W-30) in other petrol engines in 406, but you cant use the same on EW12 in 406 or 607. So, its the engine that matters, not the car (408). So next time, find out the engine in the 408 you are about to work on. Any petrol engine in 408 with 2.0 badge is EW10A engine. Then find out the recommended engine oils for the engine by Peugeot. If TOTAL Quartz 9000 (5W-40) is among the recommended oils for the engine, then why the complain? If the 5W-40 is not there, you can now bite TOTAL with your full 36, anyhow you like. Lol!Please, I don tire for this argument. I am hungry. Ikenna |
To make it easier, look for any PAN 406 production, open the bonnet, look directly behind the right side headlight. You will see a stamp indicating engine oil to be used. It was not put there by TOTAL, but by PAN. What brand and oil grade is stated there? TOTAL Quartz 7000. The Quartz could mean 10W-40 or 15W-50. But one thing is common, both are Synthetic based oils, not fully synthetic or mineral oils. These cars were produced with those engines till 2008. Peugeot said you MAY use fuel economy oil or fully synthetic oils. Its "MAY", not must or should. But its ok or even better to use them as well. Ikenna |
sooperrescue: The Op is right. Following the manufacturer's specifications is the norm. But can you advise someone in Kano or Maiduguri to do so? Using 5w 20 is good but it is not all of these oils that are synthetic. What the Op should tell us is if we are to use synthetic or conventional oil. I saw a litre of Mobil 1 made in America, and their best grade was 5w30 with GF 5 and 2 dexos. I dont see that with the Mobil 1 being sold in Nigeria. So when a Car manufacturer recommends Mobil 1 in America that has anti sludge protection, and you now bring it to Nigeria and because the Mobil 1 label is pasted on the car, you use Nigeria's Mobil 1 without the anti sludge protection. Is the Manufacturer's specification ideal? Ikenna also knows the politics with TOTAL and Peugeot. Can the oils in TOTAL Nigeria's stable work very well with Peugeot's new brand of vehicles? No.! Go through TOTAL's website and you will find strange engine oils that they claim is being sold here but actually, we have never even dreamt of it. So they expect a 408 to use Q9000 when there are superior oils from their stable in France that is recommended for the 408. Is the Manufacturer right? Oil has grades and 5 w 20 and 5 w 30 are limited to 35 degrees. 5 w 40 or 0w 40 can give an engine a protection of 50 degrees hence all our local players are producing the 40s oil but when you have the gf 5 and 2 dexos oil type, a 5w 30 gives 50 degrees protection. That is the type of oil that the manufacturers recommend and not the conventional and semi synthetic oils that are being sold in Nigeria. It pays to ask for clarification for what you don’t know than try to disprove what you don’t know. Because your post above proved you know nothing about Peugeot engines and their oils. Care to educate us on the Politics between Peugeot and TOTAL you talked about? You mean to tell us Peugeot recommends TOTAL oils for their engines because TOTAL is French as well? Really? When was the last time you saw and opened a Peugeot owners manual? How many brands do they recommend for their engine oils? ESSO & TOTAL, right? Is ESSO not owned by ExxonMobil just like Mobil oils? If yes, how come Peugeot recommends ESSO fluids as well? Is ExxonMobil not American? How come Peugeot recommended ESSO & Mobil LT71141 for their AL4 transmission and not TOATL ATF if they are that biased? How come they recommended ESSO & Mobil JWS339 for their AM6 transmission instead of TOTAL ATF? Or you never thought Peugeot carries out series of tests on their new engines to know which brands and grades of oil best suited for their engines before they roll them out for sales? Or you want me to tell Peugeot, “You guys are wrong. Nairalanders knows better oil grades suited for your engines. So I wont use the brands and grades of oil you recommended for your engines I own”? If I have been using the recommended oils & renewal intervals in my Lions by the manufacturer for years and none of the engines have given any sign of wear, sign of sludge, sign of oil shortage or burn, why then should you know better than me what works best in my Lions? How come my engines love the recommended oils I use in them? Since ESSO oils recommended for my Lion engines are not available in Nigeria, so I must not use the TOTAL oils recommended that are available in Nigeria but use other brands and grades, when I could see what my engines need with my very eyes before me? TOTAL produces lots of engine oils, while Peugeot recommends only few of them for their engines. TOTAL does not produce engine oils solely for Peugeot engines. I hope its clear now. You talked about TOTAL oils in Nigeria not suitable for the new 408 engines. Wow! If about 95% of the new 408s I have seen in Nigeria have EW10A engines, what engine oil brands and grades are recommended for that engine please? And please, you are not supposed to buy oil because its Mobil 1. There could be other Mobil 1 oil grades and type. You don’t buy only with product name, also you check oil grade and type. For example, we have 20W-50 Fully synthetic oil and 20W-50 Mineral oil. We also have 2 TOTAL Quartz 7000. One is 10W-40, while the other is 15W-50 (Both synthetic based). We also have two TOTAL 15W-50 oil grades, one is Quartz 7000, while the other is 15W-50 4x4 (for Trucks, SUVs, etc). W have 3 TOTAL Quartz 9000, but with different oil grades: 0W-40, 5W-40 & 5W-30. So check for brand name, product name, oil grade and oil type while buying engine oil. Product/trade name is not enough. Below is oil chart/table for XU, EW & ES9 engines from 406 D9 owners manual. These engines are found in 206, 306, 307, 406, 407, 607, 807, etc. For -35 +45 C, use 0W-40 For -30 +45C, use 5W-40 For -20 +45 C, use 10W 40 For -15 +50 C, use 15W-50 For -5 +50 C, use 20W- 50 From the same manual it reads: “ ......these fixed operations are to be carried out with Synthetic based oil; Fuel Economy Oil or Synthetic oil may also be used...” It went on, “ ....Warning: Do not use Fuel Economy Oil (TOTAL Quartz 9000, 5W-30) in the 2.2 litre 16V petrol engine (EW12)...” Another warning: “Warning: only use 5W-40 oil for 2.2 litre HDI engine...” Please to others, adhere to manufacturers oil recommendation, not Nairaland engine oil recommendation, for long engine life span, if you drive a Peugeot. I am a living testimony. Ikenna |
elite: This is what the instrument cluster looks like at night. the multi function display is wonderful as it gives you information about almost everything. I never knew peugeots of those days have evolved to be this cool as before now whenever I see or hear peugeot d first thing that comes to my mind is 504, 404 (pick up), 505,etc...Only the courageous ones who tested are testifying. We dont say Peugeot 408 or 607 when it comes to recommended engine oil.
