Car TalkRe: Failed Acceleration On EOD by Ikenna351(m):
Piyke: Thanks a lot Siena, This accord trim doesn't have a MAF sensor rather it just has an IAT
Some MAFs have IAT inside them. Since yours have separate IAT, I would suspect it has MAP instead, since you are saying yours doesnt have MAF, and I doubt if it has AFM.

So, I wouldnt rule out AFM, MAF or MAP yet, since they could give similar symptom when they fail too.

But it got me thinking. If your injectors are clogged, you should be experiencing hesitation, misfiring or rough idling. Hmm! But then, you said the problems started after introducing bad fluid in the fuel system and combustion chambers. That shouldnt affect MAP then. Anyway, if there is no improvement by tomorrow or next, then do as Siena suggested. Look for the MAP and swap in another and see if any improvement. If yours is the type that can be cleaned, do so and put it back and check for result. If its MAF, unplugging it will make the car run better, if the MAF is faulty. Am not sure about MAP, but you can try that.

By the way, have you checked to be sure you dont have any vacuum leak?

Piyke: The other thing I should state is that this problem started just after I bought fuel from an Oando filling station and added ABRO Injector cleaner.
I have talked about people putting in any container they see written Injector cleaner in their fuel tanks. As far as am concerned, that ABRO injector cleaner is a no-go area. Most of the ABRO products you see in Nigeria are concotted here. Some of their coolants are simply water with poster colour.

Probably, your car is having sticky intake valve issue or partially clogged injectors issue, as a result of the bad injector cleaner you introduced in the fuel system.

Techron injector clearner would have been the best solution here, but you wont find it in Nigeria. Notwithstanding, we have TOTAL & Mobil injector cleaners which you can get in any Total and Mobil filling stations. The Total cost N500, while Mobil cost N750. Try any of them and see if any improvement. But you wont notice the change immediately. It may take it a day or so to thoroughly clean up the clogged system, if they are as good as they claimed.

I hope it hasnt affected the fuel pump as well? Fuel pressure guage could tell us how good your fuel pump still is.

By the way, your car issue has nothing to do with the transmission. At least, your ECU is not going into Limp home mode.

Thats all i can think of right now. Will let you know more if any other ideas popped up. Goodluck.

Costee: Moderator, this is a comment and a suggestion. Please implore contributors on this board by why way of some sticky advice to communicate in correct orthography (spellings). Lazy and unnecessary use of abbreviations can sometimes be nauseating. Take for example this piece from an OP in a thread:

"Can U pls shed mor lite on d similarities or differences btw Chassis n Engine nos in a car. Moreso, wat neccessitates variance, similarities and besides is dere any form of identification for ds 2 parts of a vehicle. I brought ds 2 d house because som ppl r bein witchuntd by our "MEN IN BLACK" evn a frnd was pushd 2 bail hmself using ATM because of ignorance. Ds I'll lov NLders 2 b aware n brace up incase such coms up!"
Ok. Will work on that. Thanks.

Meanwhile, I have observed that too. But some would argue that no rules has been broken . Its even worse when people use those meaningless Blackberry characters in posts, making it difficult to one who wants to help, difficult to decipher the message(s) the poster is trying to pass. Its worse when one is making enquiry or seeking for help, using those characters to describe issues with his or her car(s).

Personally, I don't reply to such post. Anyway, will discuss it with the admn, to see if such would be included in the forum rules.

Car TalkRe: MY GOLF 3:how Do I Maintain It? by Ikenna351(m):
glolomoh: I guess the mechanic has done his expertise on the thermostat cos I could see a strange wire passing from d battery to a device. When I enquired about d wire, he reply that lawyers are too inquisitive for his liking. He added that what should be my headache is whether d fan is working or not and if d temperature is low or high. Seeing him becoming unfriendly,I paid and got my key. I'm still trying to get an expert who will interpret what d wire means and it effects on the car.
According to him, the temperature meter will permanently be zero/extremely low. I don't know d effect of this too. When I get an expert, I will know better.
Its simply. The mechanic has removed your cooling system thermostat and bypassed your radiator cooling fan factory connection, for the fan to spin constantly, once the ignition is on or the engine running. The strange wires you saw is the bypassed of the fans factory connection. I knew it would happen anyway. When I call them "clowns", some people would say am being too harsh.

To be honest with you, if you continue to use that car in the state he has put it, give it 2 years, 1 year or less, the engine will start emitting blue smoke. In that case, you either replace the engine or rebuild it.

Call the man, ask him to keep the thermostat he removed from your car, that you are coming to collect it back, before he throws it away. And pray that he gives you the one he removed from your car because their must be a lot of them lying in his workshop that he removed from other people's car. Even if you are not putting back that one in, you can use it find another one (new one) to put in. You need the exact thermostat or part number to find it in the market, unless all Golf 3 use the same Thermostat, irrespective of engine size.

Also, if you choose to use the car with the radiator fan spinning constantly, be prepared to be replacing the fan every now and then. Why? Because the fan's motor wasnt designed/made to run for a long time without a break, just like our Brendas/electric grinding machines in our Kitchen.

When you get back the thermostat, I will guide you on how to test it, to know if its still working or not via a pot of boiling water.

Do you really know what it means for your coolant temperature to remain at the lowest level of temp gauge constantly? It means severe friction will be going on in all the lubricating parts inside the engine.

I chose not to comment before because am not a VW expert. But I picked the same Golf 3 for a family member 2 weeks ago. I just got it registered today. Will be driving her to Anambra next week or so to give to the owner I bought it for. Even though its a city car, I could see the Germans quality in the ride. Its really a nice car!

Advocate sam: Mr Ikenna, I asked a question that "won't we go with Majority since dis is democracy?". I never expected u to give me dis type of answer. Ur response showed u are likely to be arrogant n it shows d low water mark of ur correspondence career.

In Law, there are better ways u can use d same reply in answering my question but in a civilized n re-phrased intonation. I never advised anybody to remove d thermostat of his/her car cos I didn't remove mine but I only stated my observation which can still be subjected to more debate.

Worst of it all, u are d moderator of dis section meaning u are d leader n one important virtue of a leader is dat u must be cool headed. Pls learn frm people like Siena, Trac, Inspired etc. Else I am going to move section revolution against u in dis car section.

I rest my case

Advocate Sam
I was feeling remorseful and wanted to aplogise as i was reading the above quoted post, not until i read the last paragragh, which changed everything.

See, i hate it with passion when people compare their fellow human beings with another. Am not Siena, neither am I Trac nor Inspired. If arrogance is my only short comings, then i thank God for that. At least, it makes me a human. Next time, if i offend you in anyway, deal with me directly. Leave others out of it. At least, i live a transparent live, both online and offline. The last thing i do as long as i breath is pretence. If the other 3 you mentioned are too perfect for you as a mod here, please bring on your revelution against me in this section and have me replaced. In fact, PM Seun directly to help you fasten your revolution. I took this mod job for a reason. You can ask Mukina2 what those reasons are. So dont think you have dealt with Ikenna when he seizes to be a mod. You can google "Ikenna351" and see how many dedicated French car forums that will pop up with that username. Am only here in Nairaland because of car talk. So dont think am not active elsewhere, incase Ikenna351 seizes to be a mod here. Of course, Nairaland wont miss me, but i wont miss Nairaland either. My posts will show you that only Car talk exist to me as Nairaland. I wont leave Car talk if i seize to he the mod. But i will for good if the section turn to another Autos section, which i have been using my hard earned to prevent, paying for my phone internet subscription that finishes fast, just to keep up with the mod job. Maybe you can ask Seun how much he pays me for that. But then, everything in life is not about money.

You asked a question, but you made a point doing that: 88% vs 12% , democracy vs Oligarchy. I answered you question by detailing the outcome of whichever side you chose. Unfortunately, you took offence.

Anyway, if my choice of words in replying your question was harsh or offensive, am sorry, i aplologise. But as for threatening to remove me as mod or revolt against me, i have no apology for whatever i have said about it here. I know i have derailed this thread. If you have more issues with my comments, post them in the suggestion and complaint thread or do whatever else you want to do. I wont reply you on this matter here again.

glolomoh: Initially, I wanted to ignore this rattling of yours, I couldn't cos I'm professionally trained to face facts and clarify them.
One, the word 'decision' is absurd in this situation as I have earlier sent you a mail in which I told you that the car was bought for me. I wasn't even dreaming of owning a car until the donor called me to be expecting my car in two hours time. So,I didn't 'decide' to buy a car,not to talk of Golf 3. Having said that, your assumptions on 'they told me so' were totally wrong. And if you using that phrase in my context, i'm so sorry, you have missed d way. All I meant with that phrase(so they said) was that 'they said it was over heating'. I was only responding to Redcliff's enquiry as to the cause could be over heating.
Besides, no one is querying d ruggedness of Golf here and your defence on that is not why I open this thread.
Furthermore, I couldn't remember claiming d fault was from Volkswagen. I'm not sentimental, I always hold myself responsible for my woes.
The last time I checked our cyber laws and nairaland's, it was not a crime to express one's feeling or experience. This is why your outburst surprise me. I don't like sounding like a feminist but I will cos of you. Women are weaker vessel, handle us with care. Your tone is too harsh on me especially at this time.
Hey! I apologise. I didnt know my comments were that harsh to you. Its just that i didnt feel comfortable when i saw "I regretted owing it", because i get that a lot from people. I was only trying to make you realise its not ideal to say such things within two days ownership of the car. Am just the type that doesnt know how to use sweet words to express my opinion when it come to cars. I just say it as it is, which people do find harsh. Anyway, i apologise.

If you check my first few posts in Nairaland, you would see how my 505 seriously dealt with me when i first got it, which later turned me into a Peugeot expert. Lol!. But all those while, i never wished i never got the car. I never let that hindrance get me. It was my problem and i dealt with it. Now, am enjoying the car since then. Whenever i come out from my house, i would look at the car and smile. Sometimes, we would both wink at each other. Lol! Dont mind me and my Baby. We simply understand each other. I treat her the way she wants to be treated and in return, she put smiles on my face whenever am behind the wheel. Thats how i want you to see your ride. Thats the only way you will enjoy it, against all odds.

As for the state of your car now, there is nothing i could say in my previous posts in that regard. Its now in the hands of the mechanic. So, we can only hope for the best. After all, its natural for one to want his/her car fixed, even if it gets small abused along the line. Because, i bet you, the mechanic may, if not will, remove the thermostat and connect your radiator fan to run constantly. Thats their simplest way of fixing overheating issues. I wished there is anything i could do to prevent that. But there isnt.

Next time you are driving that car, pay more attention to temperature guage than the fuel guage on the instrument cluster. Its what i do. Though, i could tell when a car is overheating by mere acceleration and sound of the engine. But with observing the temp guage all the time, i wont let it gets to the stage of acceleration and engine note. Never let an overheated car stalls by itself without your input. At that stage, it could cost you a head gasket, cylinder head or the entire engine. Stop as soon as the temp guage exceeds 100 degreee celsius. Something must have gone wrong.

How do i make it upto you. Had it been you are in Abuja, i would have ask to take you out. And who knows were that would lead us. After all, we are both single. At least, you wont need to come to Car talk to receive harsh words anymore, since you already have an in-house mechanic 24/7. What do you think?

glolomoh: My car drove me today. I regretted owning it
That's not how to own a car. So simply because you had your first issue with the car, you have started regretting a decision you made, when the journey have not even started?

Or is that you have started " Ah! They told me so o! They warned me to buy Toyota and I went and brought this nightmare into my life."

If you are driving to Abuja, you will observe that commercial transporters use Golf 3 wagon to convey passengers from Lokoja to Abuja, via Lokoja-Abuja highway. We are talking about 3 hours hot speed here. If the car is not that rugged and reliable, do you think they will be using such vehicle for such a severe use? You wont know the worth of what you have until you lose it.

From your description, it appears the car didn't come with the issue, but I could be wrong.

glolomoh: So they said. I have left it in d hand of my colleague and d mechanic. Gosh ! The experience is horrible. Imagine a car broke down in the middle of the bushy road where there is no network service to make contact while other drivers failed to wait to convey me to the major town where i could get an aid. I was there for more than two hours confused.
Would you stop if you were among the other drivers that failed to stop and conveyed you to major town? It takes a lot of courage for one to stop for a lady in the middle of no-where. Because if care is not taken, as soon as you stop, that your car may seize to be yours that moment. Armed robbers & car snatchers do use ladies to carry out such operations. So, blame no one. Good Samaritan can be a difficult thing to practice on Nigerian roads

Advocate sam: Which school of thought shud we believe, some will say remove thermostat while some will say don't remove thermostat cos u can not be knowledgeable than the manufacturers.

From my observation, 88% auto mech in Nigeria will advise u to remove thermostat immediately u buy a Tokunboh car while 12% auto mech will advise u not to remove it.

Wont we go with Majority since dis is democracy?

Advocate Sam
Shey the majority or democracy go come replace that your engine wen it kpafuga, because of absence of thermostat?

The 12% auto mechs here are not compelled to advice or profer solutions to people's car issues, when they run crying for help here, after they have abused their cars and created the issues with their cars themselves. I don't know about others, but I have my own car that needs my attention too.

Sometimes I wonder if cars could talk. If that could be possible, I would imagine how cars at various ports outside Nigeria, waiting to be shipped to Nigeria, would be crying to the exporters/dealers not to ship them to Nigeria, knowing the kind of abuse they would meet as soon as their 4 wheels touch Nigerian soil.

wisesystem: Hi House!!! @ Ikenna hows ur new Fox? nothing to share with the house from the Fox Master?
Don't mind me. I have been busy studying my Fox; to understand how everything in her works, for future diagnosis & repairs. My Diagbox is also helping me on that. Quite an interesting study for such a complex system.

Meanwhile, I decided not to use the car till I replace the timing belt. I wont risk it. It was first replaced at 66,000 km by the previous owner, but there is no subsequent record to show it was replaced the second time and it has clocked 160,000+ km. So, I want to assume that it was only replaced once, meaning, its due for replacement.

I want to replace it myself. I have started gathering the special tool for replacing the timing belt of that V6 engine, ES9J4S. I have checked at various stores at Gudu and found both PAN and Powergrips (Gates) brands of the engine timing belt. The OEM (PAN) cost 16k, while the aftermarket (Powergrips) cost 13k. Powergrips is a popular company in UK, authorized by many Euro and American cars, to solely produce and sale Timing belts and the kits. The quality of their Timing belts is widely known for good quality. A friend of mine in Australia who replaced his D8 V6 timing belt last year recommended the powergrips for me. Am considering to buy the Powergrips belt, not because its cheaper, but because it has been proved to be of good quality. As for the OEM, I wonder why ASD motors wouldn't have it, yet its in the open market. Hope the one in the open market is truly the OEM. Will look into that before I decide which one to go for.

Unfortunately, they don't sale timing belts with complete kit here. The 3 rollers and 1 tensioner is not included in the pack. The complete kit can be sourced from outside, but am not sure am ready for that now. I want to replace only the belt now and later (maybe after 2 a year or so) source for the complete kit in Uk or US. But I will check the conditions of the rollers and tensioner when I remove the belt. The water pump cost between 18-23k, depending on the brand. But at least, its available here.

I was really surprised to find out at Gudu market that all the engine parts of the ES9J4S are available here in Abuja, just like the I4 petrol engines (XU10, EW10,etc). Only difference is that the V6 parts are pricey.

As soon as I gather all I would need to replace the timing belt, I would do the replacement immediately, so that I can start enjoying " The King of the Foxes!" I will take pics while doing the replacement at every step and post them here or create a separate thread for it.

Car TalkRe: Honda Crv 2003model Vs Toyota Rav4 2003model by Ikenna351(m):
tjskii: Oya na,I nid answers jor undecided
Does the Honda CRV have a model year?

For me, "resale value" of a car is not something i consider when searching for a car to buy, because i buy to enjoy as long as it takes, not turn myself into a car dealer (buying and selling). In fact, i dont just buy a car people think its good. I buy a car i fall in love with, no matter what Mr. A or Mr. B thinks about the car or my choice. Another man's choice is not going make me live longer, rather, my happiness.

There is nothing wrong with Rav4, neither is anything wrong with CRV (sorry, am not a fan of both). But each of them have their peculiar issues. But it will help if you can get us the two cars model year. Google the two cars, e.g. " Toyota Rav4 wikipedia". Open the wikipedia site on the car. You will see pics of various models of rav4 displayed against their year of productions or models. Some models may have had some peculiar issues. Post the models and users of such models here will review the cars for you. The choice will then be yours. But as for me, once i set my mind on a particular car, no living being can talk me out of it, because i do my homework well before deciding on a car to acquire.

Car TalkRe: Peugeot: Cars With Attitude! by Ikenna351(op):
igahdavid: Please, Ikenna, do you know how much I can get a super v6 engine for 504
First of all, you should know that not all 504 will take PRV V6 engine, unless you plan to swap in v6 other than one used by Peugeot in 504 coupe and 505 Saloon.

PRV V6 engine use longer torque tube and propeller shaft than the conventional torque tube and prop shaft in standard 504 & 505. So, if you are swapping in a V6 engine in 504 Saloon which never got v6 engine, then you should find v6 torque tube and prop shaft and swap them in as well. The length of 505 v6 propeller shaft is 7.2 m, i think.

The only 504 that can take PRV V6 engine is 504 GL. It has independent differential and rear drive shaft, unlike the other 504 models with live differential. Such ones were not designed to speed and give them stability on high speed, which was why such 504s got 1.8 L engine, while the GL got 2.0 L engine. Besides the GL has lower ground clearance needed for speed.

If you cant get a 504 GL in good condition, then forget about such conversion.

The only factory 504 that got V6 engine (1st generation PRV) was 504 coupe/Cabriolet, which was never sold in Nigeria. Two years ago, a 504 V6 Cabriolet in Mint condition popped up on ebay. The price was $20,000.

wisesystem: Hello House! congrats to Ikenna for his new fox. well am next, wd be going to Cotonou after the Easter break to get a Fox myself, any timely tips from house members will be appreciated. One thing I ve bin trying to verify is if d milage of a 406 can actually be tampered with or can I trust wateva milage I see on cars in Cotonou.Ur informed contributions will be appreciated.
Honestly, i dont know if Peugeot mileage can be tampared. But i do know there are other ways of knowing how true the mileage on the instrument cluster is.

Ask for the service history of the car. You will know the true mileage from there, if the car has one. Mine came with service history. When i mean service history, i mean it came with all the papers that contains all the services done on the car under warranty and after the warranty, upto 120,000 km mileage service. All the receipts bearing dates were also included, all bearing the mileage at which the services were done. From there, you can know if truly the mileage on the instrument cluster is correct. But its likely that not all would have service history, since not all previous owners would sale their cars with them, unless the buyer specifically ask for them. But i would also suspect any car that didnt come with service history, if the mileage is too low to be believed, because car dealers can do and undo.

Another tip is how to know the model year. If you are after a particular model in Peugeot, dont listen to what the dealers would tell you as the model year, check the door glasses, you will see it there clearly stamped. You will see some figures on the bottom of the door glasses/windows. Check the last digits on the last line. You could see something like

.....0

The 0 means 2000 model. The same way, if you see .....1, .....3, 5....., 7.... etc, it means 2001, 2003, 1995 or 1997 model. Thats how Peugeot states the production year of their cars. I mean all Peugeots. I used to think my 505 V6 was 1987 model until i bought this 406 where i learnt how to check the model year of Peugeots. I quickly checked my 505 door glasses and realized its 1986 model, not '87 model. I have the pic of what it looks like on the door windows, but it wont upload here and i dont have the strength of this resizing thing. If you want to see it, mail me your email address and i would send the pic to you.

And dont bother checking the VIN online for the year model, because Peugeot dont put the production year in the VIN like other brands. You can only find out the year model of Peugeot with VIN via Service Box, if you are an authorised dealer.
Wish you goodluck.

I was discussing with someone yesterday and i gathered that cleaning car with just water and cloth kills the car body paint. And i have been suspecting this because i noticed this on my 605 V6 before it was sold. I usually just use soaked cloth to wipe out dust or dirt when am too lazy or in a hurry to wash with car wash/car body liquid detergent. And before i knew it, the paint started fading, to a point that it became so bad. But i wasnt sure what could cause that. But now, I know.

I know some of us here are already aware, but for those of us who didnt know before now, I would advice we leave the car to be dirty until we can wash with car wash. Even if you wash your car at the commercial car wash places, make sure they use the proper liquid soap

Car TalkRe: Peugeot: Cars With Attitude! by Ikenna351(op):
Meanwhile, I priced the ES9J4S timing belt (timing belt for all petrol V6 in 406, 407, 605, 607 & 807) that same yesterday. The belt is very much available in Abuja, in abundance. The price is 13k, though some were selling it 15k. I even took pics of the belt and the pack. I have seen the belt with that brand several times on sale on ebay. So, I want to believe its genuine.

If I could find out the mileage the previous owner change the timing belt, it will help me prepare and work towards replacing the kits at the next 80,000-100,000 km. But I wouldn't mind to replace it anytime soon, which I would like to replace the belt myself. Unfortunately, they don't sell the timing belt of that engine with complete kits here in Nigeria: Timing belt, 3 Idlers and 1 Tensioner. Water pump is sold separately. Even when I asked, they didn't understand what I meant by Idlers and Tensioners.

I also priced the Thermostat of that engine and its 10k. Hmm! Then the water pump is 18k.

The thing about this V6 engine is that the timing belt is meant to be replaced once every 10 years or 80,000 km. I don't think spending about 50k to do such a major service once every 10 years is too much for such a powerful engine, since its worth it.

Note that ES9J4S, the V6 engine in 406 D9, was produced by Peugeot and Porsche. Though, originally, the V6 engine, ES9J4, in D8 406 & '98 model 605 V6, was co-produced by Peugeot & Renault. But in phase II 406, Peugeot gave Porsche the engine to re-design and re-produce and refine it. It then came out with 210 hp, which previously as ES9J4 had 194 hp. So, imagine an engine Renault, Peugeot and Porsche co-produced! I took the car for some fun on an expressway last night and the car was simply a Beast! Rocket is an understatement.

Funny enough, the car average 39 mpg (7.2L/100 km) on highway and 20 mpg (13.7L/100 km) in the city, when driven on average speed. I still wonder why people complain that V6 consumes too much fuel. huh

The car has 16" Alloy wheels, which is not the car spec. The 406 V6 D9 wheel spec is 205/60 R15. So, I may not be getting the complete factory mpg of the Beast due to the larger wheel and tyres. The car came with 205/55 R16 (which I believed were changed by the previous owner). So, the difference in the factory mpg wont be much. But Mehn! The stability those large 16" wheels and the wider tyres gave the car that yesterday on the expressway was awesome. The car was just on the ground, moving like a tank and speeding like Rocket! cool

Anyway, the shipping and custom papers show that the car landed in Lagos port in November, 2012. While inspecting the car last week before the purchase, I observed that they have abused the fans connection by connecting it directly to switch on as soon as the ignition is on. I really wonder what is wrong with Nigerians. A car that is barely 5 months in Nigeria yet to be sold had already been abused. Anyway, it didn't discourage me from going ahead with the purchase.

Yesterday, after work, I decided to revert back the radiator fans connection to factory. I opened the fans relay housing and saw that one the 3 relays that controls the 3 speeds of the 2 fans was removed and connection bypassed. The remaining 2 relays were there, but the connections were bypassed as well. So, I pulled out one of the relays to look for exact one for the 3rd one removed. But before I left in search for the relay, I decided to find out what must have made them run the fans direct to ignition switch, probably, an overheating issue. The first place I checked, the coolant reservoir cap, was the culprit. The cap seal was broken, so the system was no longer sealed off, which would cause overheating. And am afraid to say that it appears they removed the thermostat as well. The things some of these car dealers do! angry

I bought both the reservoir cap and additional relay, came back, reversed the fans connection to factory, put back the 3 relays, swapped in the new reservoir cap and started the car. The fans started working as factory again. That annoying speed 3 noisy sound from those fans had stopped. The fans now only switch to speed 3 only when on AC and the engine is idling.

So, if you stay in Abuja and would want to reverse your radiator fans back to factory (if they have abused yours), you can bring it over to my place to help you to do that.
Please how/where did you tap your power source from to connect it back to factory?
I traced the factory source of the fans trigger to radiator sensor. I removed the wrong connection and used fresh wire to reconnect it to factory.

Pics sizes are too large to upload here. Am too tired to do the resizing thing. I will post them in Aussiefrogs and post the links here.
