Car TalkRe: My Temeratue Guage Reading...your Opinions Please. by Ikenna351(m): 2:27pm On Feb 27, 2013
its a 2007 honda accord.
That cannot be your engine optimal temperature. Too low for any engine to operate properlly and give you the best fuel economy the engine is designed to offer.

Even if you are running only water in the engine cooling system, it will still get to that middle of the guage. The only difference between coolant and water is that needle gets to the middle of the guage faster with coolant, while water takes ages to do the same. As long as the needle refuses to rise to that middle, no matter how long the engine runs in whatever condition, then something is wrong with your cooling system.

I would start from the thermostat, if i were you. Probably, it has been removed (which is likely the case here) or its stuck open (rarely happens). You just have to open the thermostat housing to be sure the thermostat is still there. If its there, pull it out and test the thermostat to see how and when it opens and closses. Better to do it with a thermometer, if you have one. It will help you to know at what temperature the thermostat starts opening, incase someone wrongly changed and put a thermostat with wrong opening temperature degree celcius other than the factory thermostat opening degree celcius. But you can still check without thermometer, but it wont be accurate.

When does your radiator electric fan(s) starts spinning? When you switch on the ignition or when the engine starts? Or does it start spinning after a long time of engine idling (like 15-30 mins of engine idling). I know you have answered youngchopper that question, but we need to be sure you understood the first time he asked you the question. Because if your fan starts spinning as soon as the engine starts running and doesnt go off till the engine goes off, with an absence of thermostat as well, then you have your answer.

Car TalkRe: At What Age Did You Buy Your First-Car And How Much Then? by Ikenna351(m): 9:33pm On Feb 26, 2013
omaolowo: Very funny as I seem to the only OLD MAN to contribute to this thread.
But permit me to say that my first car was bought in 1977: It was a VolksWagen Beetle 1,300 cc
The total cost was N2,660.00. Of course, it was BRAND NEW - from NITECHO Osogbo. Super Petrol then, cost only 10 kobo per litre. To fill up your tank that is entirely empty was less than N4.00 (Four Naira)

I was then aged 24 yrs - and a Graduate Assistant in the University.

This car was sold to a colleague for N3,500 in 1987 - 10 years later. By then, I was having an official car a Peugeot 504 SR bought in January 1983 and another personal car (also a Peugeot 504) for my wife. This second Peugeot car was actually bought from SCOA Apapa in April 1984 because of the 'Odd and Even No' regime in Lagos. We left Lagos (for good) in 1985.

My wife then used this car for 25 years (from 1987 when she learnt driving) until I was forced to 'retire' the car with a replacement. She is the most wonderful angel. Our paths crossed as Primary School classmates in 1959 (now you know!)

God has been so kind: as both of these Peugeot cars are still in our compound and are still ACTIVE (if you don't mind power-assisted steering, automatic gear, windows, air-conditioner) offered by the Toyotas, Datsun Ultima and the Hondas we (the 'children' have grown up and have their cars, too!) now use.

Very occasionally, I still take a cruise in the 1984 Peugeot. It has been wonderful for this 29 year old member of the family! It has really been wonderful (But alas, I have to end this with 'GONE ARE THOSE DAYS.....')
Please, we would love if you would join us in the Nairaland Peugeot community. Find the link below:

https://www.nairaland.com/1003701/peugeot-thread-peugeot-community

We would need an old/elderly Lion like you in the house. Please, we dont have Lioness in the house. So, we wouldnt mind if you could drag your wife join us as well. Lol!

Though, i have sent you PM, inviting you to join the community, but i needed to it here too, in case other Lions and Lionesses are here who havent joined us. You will love it when you do, because we are happy family.

If my plans works out, we are going to have a Peugeot day in Abuja this year. I pray that it works out.

stagger: I got this timeless Holt's Radiator Coolant made by Lanre Badmus Industries for my Montero Sport. Hope it is ok.
I dont know about Montero.

First, you need to find out what colour of Coolant your engine should use, then you take it from there. Google it.

Denc: Thanks

I have highlighted the parts of your post that tie to the manual's recommendation
Just need to figure-out the aluminium engine bit...heard using wrong coolant can corrode the engine...is your Peugeot an aluminium engine like Honda's?

Also quote price per pack

I guess I can get it at any Total filling station, rite?
Yes, my engine cylinder head is Aluminium.

The price of TOTAL coolant is N350 a litre (a container).

It should be available at every TOTAL filing station.

Car TalkRe: 2000 Honda With 728747 Miles - (accord EX-L Sedan) by Ikenna351(m): 9:31am On Feb 26, 2013
Yes, proper maintenance or an owner determines how long a car would last.

In this case, i dont think it was because he was changing his engine oil every two weeks that made it last that long. There are people that have been changing their engine oil every 6 months, once a year, every 7k km or according to the owners manual, yet the engine lasted close to a million kilometers. There is no harm in changing engine oil everyday, but i consider it a waste. For me, i stick with the owners manual and it works for me.

There are a lot Nigerians that change their engine oil every 2-3 months, yet their engine will fail after 2-3 years of ownership. When you abuse your engine by removing the engine cooling system thermostat, connecting the fan to run constantly, using water instead of coolant, etc, do you expect the engine to last you more than 200,000 km? You must be kidding me! Even if you change your engine oil with synthetic oil every 2 days and still met out those abuse on your engine, dont expect to add more 100,000 km on that engine.

Denc: Hello

The car manual recommends Honda Long-life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 (this is not available at Honda Place, Burma Road, Apapa, Lagos)

In the interim, it says "...use another major-brand non-silicate coolant...make sure it is a high-quality coolant recommended for aluminium engines"

Does the TOTAL coolant meet the above specs? OR can you recommend a brand please ...
The TOTAL coolant contains Mono-ethylene-glycol which is good and recommended compound for engines or cooling systems. Google it and find out.

Even if you are not going to use the TOTAL green coolant, make sure whichever brand you choose contains the Mono-ethylene-glycol.

By the way, on the TOTAL coolant label, it reads "Not compatible with silicate formulation". It also stated on the label "contains no Nitrate, phosphate or amine". I dont know if that answers your question.

I dont know about Honda, but i know that Peugeot recommends TOTAL coolant for their cars.

Denc: See picture attached ...
Whats your opinion?
I dont know about that size, but i bought the 4 litre one and it was nonsense. Water was even better than it.

The thing is, there could still be original Abro coolant, but knowing which one is original is where the problem lies. The one i bought was like they mixed water with green poster colour. I have already flushed the nonsense out and refilled with green TOTAL coolant. Even when i was flushing it out, the colour was no longer green. It had turned to water colour.

Anyway, am not saying its a bad product. But from what i experienced from the one i used, Abro coolant wont see my engine bay again.

platinumricky: Peugeot HDI hybrids aren't targeted @ emerging markets like ours. Am not a fan of hybrids....even though i appreciate the tech behind them, they aint my cup of tea. They would eventually become mobile-headaches-on-wheels when they start ageing. I think its high time we embrace diesels here...some diesels like the VW touareg V10 tdi, Audi Q7 W12 tdi, BMW M550d (f10),VW Golf GTd and Mercedes E320cdi (W212) will embarrass a lot of petrol powered vehicles on the highway with their performance. Do u know if peugeot HDIs use urea to 'purify' their emissions?
I really dont know much about the HDIs. But I do know that they return good mpg.

If Federal govt really want to remove fuel subsidy completely, this is another means of making it happen, without the masses attack. Lol! They have to find a way to encourage and promote diesel automobiles for private cars in Nigeria. They have the media and could discuss with car dealerships to start bringing in diesel cars and their parts as well, by slashing down the import duties of diesel cars and parts. Once our brothers importing car parts see that diesel cars are now moving the Nigerian market, they will switch to importing diesel engine parts, since the demand will be high as well. As for the diesel mechanics, we can always deal with that. After all, even the petrol engines, dem no sabi repair. So we can take our chances with the diesels. As for me, i will be diagnosing and fixing mine myself. cool

platinumricky: I think that peugeot e-HDi Hybrid4 is ahead of its time. Peugeot should have made it a petrol hybrid with a haldex AWD system...creating a diesel hybrid is an overkill.
Could be because more Europeans are going for Diesel cars these days, unlike the North Americans. So the diesel hybrid will make sense to Europeans, which means good market for Peugeot. But what about us na? If thats all they have to offer to the competitive market, why not come down here and promote their HDIs and e-HDI Hybrid4? An average Nigerian would love a car he will only visit a fuel station once in 2 months to refill the fuel tank. Before you know it, everyone will switch to diesel cars. After all, Nigerians are good at "follow-follow".

But seriously, the 508 e-HDI Hybrid4, that average 61 - 74 mpg, will really make sense for a daily driver. I would love to have one o! grin

Car TalkRe: Peugeot 508, have your say by Ikenna351(m):
platinumricky: Thanks to lousy emission laws and eurozone fuel economy targets...carmakers are all downsizing their powerplants to meet up. I doubt if peugeot will unveil a V6 variant of the 508,unless it spawns a coupe variant from the current platform. Naturally aspirated high performance engines are dying in the industry- Bmw dropped their V10 in favour of bi-turbo V8s in their ///M variants , Audi dropped their lamborghini V10 and switched to a twin-turbo 4.0 V8...its now a sad trend (sorry for the thread diversion).
I didnt know other brands have joined the chorus.

Well, the way out for those of us in Nigeria is to switch to diesels, since thats were they are upgrading, and then downgrading on the petrol engine. You can imagine were the highest petrol engine in 508 is 2.0 L (145 hp), while the top diesel engine in the 508 is 2.2 (201 hp). But am yet to find out the 2.3 L (170 hp) fuel type: diesel or petrol. Whichever, diesel got the best engine in 508.

If there is accessibility of diesel engine parts in Nigeria, I wouldnt mind to switch to diesel, since i will be doing the repairs myself. After all, I stand to gain more fuel economy, even with more power. At least, it will do a good job as daily driver, while the powerful petrol one serves as a weekend car, for catching of fun.

frenchbase: you are right Ikenna, but the present engine sounds and pull great even though it's a FWD.
from my own point of few, they are not eager, ready to produce a v6 engine following the issues they have with the previous ones(406, 407..)
Issues? Care to elaborate? Because the last time i checked, the ES9J4S, V6 engine in Phase II 406, 407 & 607 had no peculiar issue.

I want to believe they are after fuel economy. I would go for the GT version, if they will produce a stick one in future, even though its diesel. But, I prefer a Naturally Aspirated engine over a Turbocharged engine.

Car TalkRe: Peugeot 508, have your say by Ikenna351(m):
My only issue with the 508 is the FWD and no V6. Even the GT model doesnt have a stick option.

Aside that, its a nice looking car. The number of 508, including the new 408, is increasing on the road, here in Abuja, everyday.

Car TalkRe: My Mechanic Removed My Toyota Camry's Thermostat. Any Drawbacks? by Ikenna351(m):
^^^^ Siena, its not always bad mechanics that cause all these car issues as soon as they enter Nigeria, but some owners themselves are the cause of their nightmares. Take for example the suggestions given to Op by two posters here (nony30 & adeniyisavage). Op could be misled by such posts.

We learn by asking questions about something we dont know, like Op did. So, Op you did the right thing by asking. Siena has explained the consequencies of removing thermostat to you. I would take his advice, if i were you.

A non petrolhead or a non car enthusiast would always say some funny, annoying or embarrassing things about cars, out of ignorance, or sometimes because some are not ready to learn.

Below is a simply way to know them when they speak:

*All German Cars are RWD.

*All V6 engines are problematic.

*All German cars consume excess fuel.

*All Japanese cars dont consume fuel at all(As if they run water in their fuel tank).

*Give a non petrolhead a BMW and he would say "It's just a car".

* A non petrolhead would tell you "Your car is old, why dont you sell it and get something modern or flashy?" Of course, you could reply him with "Your car is boring, why don't you get rid of it and get something fun to drive?" Lol!

Add yours.
