University of ilorin (UNILORIN) said somethings about the just concluded protest that held on January 23, 2017. Read: Re: UNILORIN STUDENTS PROTEST AGAINST NON-CLEARANCE OF OVER 2,000 NEWLY ADMITTED STUDENTS - Kunle Akogun, (Head of Corporate Affairs, University of Ilorin) I refer to a Press Release currently trending on the social media and authored by an amorphous group that goes by the name Citizens Action To Take Back Nigeria (CATBAN). The Press Release, entitled “Impunity and Endemic Fraud at University of Ilorin”, accused the University of unjustly sending away some newly admitted students without any “reasonable explanation other than claims of “unacceptable results”. The faceless group then ordered the University, within seven days, withdraw its go home order to the students and allow them continue their studies peacefully” failing which it threaten to “shut down the University”. I wish to make the following clarifications for the benefit of readers and parents who might have been misinformed and misguided by the content of the said Press Release. In the first place, it was wrong to address the protesters as “Unilorin students”, as they are just admission seekers whose provisional admissions are yet to be officially authenticated. And thir total number is 861 and NOT 2000 as being mischievously bandied around. Out of the 103,000 that made Unilorin their first choice, over 65,000 met the cut-off mark. But our admission quota is just about 10,000. And with the cancellation of post-UTME screening by the Federal Government, the University had to device other means to screen the candidates in order to get the number we want. Ab-initio, we decided against physical screening of the candidates to avoid inviting them to Ilorin. All qualified candidates were then directed to upload their five best subjects, three of which must be directly relevant to their proposed courses of study. It was clearly stated that any misinformation or wrong input of subjects or scores would lead to automatic disqualification’ So, on the basis of what the candidates uploaded, they were allocated scores and those that were found worthy were given admission. After that, we asked them to proceed to pay a NON-REFUNDABLE acceptance fee But we still had to carry out further screening of their certificates to confirm the veracity of the scores they uploaded, which gave them the admission. At the University of Ilorin, our tradition is to screen our students both at the entry and exit points. So, if anybody gained admission through false qualification and he/she is not detected at the entry point, he/she would be detected during the screening at the exit point and he would not be allowed to graduate. So, we did the same thing in this circumstance and we discovered that some of those admitted had cheated and this had given them undue advantage over other candidates And this is where the Administration said that anybody that cheated should not be allowed to come in. Perhaps these candidates and their backers didn’t know the larger implication of what they have done, which is plain forgery and examination malpractice. These are criminal offences that are punishable under the laws of the country. If these guys do not soft-pedal in their misguided advocacy, the University authority can be forced to go the extra mile of handing them over to the law enforcement agencies for necessary disciplinary actions. We have resisted the urge to take such action so far because they are infants who still have a long way to go in life! The University management would not succumb to blackmail from any quarter. Neither would we allow anybody to dictate to us how to administer this institution that is governed by due process. Rules and regulations are strictly followed here. We don’t know what CATBAN seeks to achieve by constituting itself to a parallel administration of Unilorin with its claim that it had conducted another screening for the affected admission seekers and unilaterally “clearing” them. On what basis and with which data base do they carry out this exercise? To us, this is clearly laughable and should be ignored by all right-thinking people. Suffice it to say here that the affected students should not allow themselves to be pushed too far by agents of destabilization, who would only worsen their case, as the University authority is taking steps to review the cases of them who did not set out to cheat or gain admission through dubious means. http://talkgeria.com/topic/really-see-what-unilorin-said-about-the-protest-against-non-clearance-of-over-2000-newly-admitted-students/ CC: Lalasticlala, Mynd44

A Secondary school girl who lives at NNPC area of Ibadan, was reportedly hawking detergent when the suspects allegedly forced her into an uncompleted building, where they allegedly raped her in turns. The young girl, it was discovered, was lured by the men, who pretended that they wanted to buy the detergent she was hawking thereafter told her to go to the uncompleted building with them to collect her money. It was reported that the girl turned down their request, but was forcefully taken into the uncompleted building, where two other men were waiting. A source quoted the girl as saying that after she was taken to the house, one of the two boys, who were waiting there, gagged her, while the other forcefully opened her legs. The source said: “She said the two men, who took her to the building raped her, before the two others took their turn.” When the girl threatened to report to the police, they threatened to beat her up and later offered her money. But her mother reported to the police. Confirming the incident, the Oyo State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Adekunle Ajisebutu, said: “The case was reported by the victim’s mother and the state Commissioner of Police, Samuel Adegbuyi, has directed that the case be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department of the command.” http://talkgeria.com/topic/4-men-allegedly-raped-an-11year-old-hawker-in-ibadan/

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), has announced that it will start a one-week notice strike on Monday. ASUP described that this became crucial as the federal government denied to improve polytechnic education in the country. The Union’s South-South/South-East Coordinator, Dr. Chika Ogonwa, mentioned this on Sunday in Asaba, stating that they will start an indefinite strike, if the government failed to resolve all issues within the 1 week. Ogonwa said the FG had failed to start re-negotiation of the ASUP/Government agreement of 2010 on the review of the Federal Polytechnics Act. “Effective from tomorrow (Monday), the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has lifted the ban on its deferred industrial action against the near collapse of the sector in Nigeria. The 1 week warning strike stops February 5th. “President Muhammadu Buhari-led government is insensitive to our plight. After this warning strike, the Federal Government will be left with two options – either to close down the method or redeem it from total collapse”, he declared. http://talkgeria.com/topic/asup-starts-one-week-warning-strike-on-monday/ |
6 Syrians including Christians were turned away from Philadelphia International Airport in the US and delivered back to Lebanon, an official at Beirut airport told AFP on Sunday. US President Donald Trump enacted an executive order on Friday prohibiting access to the United States to all nationals of 7 Muslim-majority states — Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. The reject also prohibits entry to all refugees, inspit of origin, for 120 days and indefinitely for refugees from Syria, that has been ravaged by a deadly war since 2011. “Six people, which include Syrian Christians, were turned back at Philadelphia airport on Saturday and were back in Beirut on Sunday,” the source in Lebanon said, speaking on condition of anonymity. They then headed back to Syria. The Lebanese official said three children were among those turned away at Philadelphia. Their journey had taken them via Doha without any direct flights between Beirut and the United States since the 1980s, when Lebanon was in the midst of a civil war. The US ban stipulates that by the end of the 120-day period, however, priority for entry to the US shall be given to refugees persecuted for their religion, an implicit reference to Christians in Syria and Iraq. http://talkgeria.com/topic/syrian-christians-declined-entry-at-philadelphia/ |
In a recent talk with Punch, veteran hilarious actor, John Okafor, generally known as Mr Ibu, exposed how he lost hope and nearly committed suicide.. He unveiled how an unnamed friend kicked him out, which crushed jis spirit, and seeing he has no where else to go, chose to end his life, but he was saved by his mother whose face flashed before him as he prepared to take the plunge. Read his story, as narrated to Punch: “Do you know that there was a day that I had prepared to kill myself in Ajao Estate? That day, I was prepared to jump into a well because of the situation that surrounded me. Three days before that day, I had not eaten and I did not have hope of eating for the next week. I was only surviving on water and I hate it when I bother anyone. Most of my close friends were not bothered about my well-being even though it was obvious that I was not alright. I remember December 18, 1997, a friend of mine who I squatted with called me in the morning and told me that he would be going home for Christmas and he did not want anyone to be in his room. I assured him that no one would come to his place but he said he wanted me out of the room. I told him that I did not have another place to stay and he should trust me that as usual, I would take good care of the place. Though I was older than him, I did all the washing and cleaning of the house to the extent that I washed his panties and underwear. I did that so that I could have a roof over my head. But out of anger, that my friend went into the house, brought out all my things and threw them outside, then he told me to leave his house, he locked his door and left. “From where I was seated, I was looking at the well. I thought to myself, ‘is it not better to end my life by jumping into the well so that when people return in the evening and they need water, they would discover my body and my friend would know that he was the reason I committed suicide?’ I went to the well and as I opened the lid and prepared to jump inside, the image of my mother’s face flashed through my mind. I quickly closed the well and began to wonder how my mother knew that I wanted to kill myself. My mother was still alive at the time; she was about 80 years old. I went back and leaned by the wall. A neighbour, Francis, was playing a song by Michael Bolton titled ‘When I am back on my Feet Again.’ The song gave me hope and I decided to stay alive. “I cleaned the place (under a lorry) and was able to get some cartons which I used to do a tent. In the course of cleaning the place, I realised that it was dogs that used to sleep there at night but I had no choice. One night, about 30 dogs were barking so no one could sleep so I had to move my cartons to another location. While I was changing my bearing, I saw some people gathering. I hid my cartons, went close to the place and saw that it was a movie audition. I saw some of my friends there like Pete Edochie, and a friend called Sandra Ezeh. When Sandra saw me, she hugged me and said she was a big fan of my work especially my role in ‘Ikuku.’ She asked if I was doing anything and when I told her I wasn’t, she insisted that I accompany her to see her boyfriend. Since I had no job, I followed her; beside, all I needed then was food. I was so hungry at the time that it began to affect my eye sight. Sadly, her boyfriend had travelled so she said we should go to see another friend. We met the woman who owned a bar and when I asked for food, she said all she had was pepper soup and drinks. I told her to give me pepper soup and she was nice enough to tell them to give me two agidi with the pepper soup. After I ate the food, I fell into a deep sleep. “When I woke up, I saw an address, 125 Adetola Street, then immediately, I remembered that a friend had called me asking me to stay in his house because he was travelling to Germany and that was the address. Immediately I crossed the street and went to the house. When I got into the house, my friend, Frank, just got in from London. He was so happy to see me that he hugged me and we both fell to the ground. He then said that no matter where I was staying, I had to move into his house. We went to pick my load from where I put it. Frank asked why my load was outside and I lied to him that I was preparing to travel. That was how he gave me a room in his flat. I prayed to God thanking him for saving me. He started taking me out and buying me clothes. It was from there I got my footing.” http://talkgeria.com/topic/how-i-nearly-committed-suicide-mr-ibu-reveals/
