I think we have same taste in cars . I had same choice two years ago till i drove a friends benz C240 . What i can tell you is benz is a super car . I owned a nissan maxima with the so called 3.5 vq engine the engine in the infinity your thinking of buying. That engine could not hold its own agaist a 1996 benz c class. Nissan is fast but not stable at high speeds, the car suffers from lower arm ball joint shock absorbers problem. Besides when i owned mine the nozzle was not in ladipo market i had to order from abroad. Nissan suffers from overheating after driving fast for 70 0km and above. You need to keep one eye on temp or your car is gone

Thanks for ya response. I always wanted the MB but scared of issues. I'm gonna treat it like a baby boy...Lol.

Since you bought yours, what are the issues you've had so far?
What's the maintenance like? Duration or miles?
Which trim did you finally go for? C320?

Thanks for the love bro.

Awesome thread y'all.

I will advice you to do both a vin check and also buy a high milage benz c class or buy one that indicates that the gearbox has once been replaced to be on the safe side. The gear box starts failing from say 70k to 110k miles so if for instance you buy one that says 170k miles i guess the gearbox would have been fixed by the previous owner.
you need to research the model you want to buy as different models have peculiar issues and avoid flooded cars. lastly judge the benz you want to buy by the number of errors the scanner indicates and not by the sturdy look of the body, in other words,go to cotonou with a launch scanner , c3 scanner or with enough money to rent a scanner there.
finally go to cotonou with one or two friends they will see what you did not see and save you a few thousands in additional expenses.

Thanks a lot for this info.
I've been researching a lot on the trims I'm interested in. This point you noted on the transmission and buying a high mileaged car to avoid issues, I will be very worried buying a ten years old MB model with high mileage. I plan on using this car for a while, let's say 3+ years. What do you think of this?

You said you purchased ya car on auction. You mean you bought via online auction, shipped to cotonou as you mentioned seme border? Is it possible to request for this informations like car repair history and number of previous owners in cotonou?

You've had MB before. which MB specialist mechanic do you recommend in Lagos?

Where do get the OEM parts you use for repairs?

I like the C320s and 280s, is there a year you highly recommend btw 2004-2006?

Can you give a clue to how much you bought yours, let me have a price range on mind before going there.

Once again, thanks a lot for your time and response. I appreciate it.

Hello all,

I need the help of MB gurus in the house. I wanna purchase my first car this April and I'm really liking this MB C320 4matic 2005 (I heard this trim was switched to C350 in 2005, true?) or C280 4matic 2006. I'll like to know your opinion on this models/trims and you can suggest any better model, trim btw 2004-2006.

Please, I wanna purchase the car from cotonou myself, any info on how to do pre-purchase inspection? I don't know any MB specialist mechanic in Lagos, any very good MB mechanic in Lagos?

Any other info on this MB model And trim will be highly appreciated, recalls? transmission issues? Etc. I read one poster saying MB V6 engines usually have a lot of issues, please is this something I should be concerned about?

My other option is Infiniti G35X 2006. Based on experience and knowledge, which is the better option between the two. Though personally I prefer the MB, I still don't want a vehicle that I won't enjoy without issues. I love the MB, I just wanna make an informed decision.

Please house, any information will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Infact, opposite that place too under the bridge, after the filling station, there is another guy who broke out from the Benz affairs. He knows his onions well , he use to fix my friends s class and all types and manner of Benz with complete set of diagnostic tools and good sense of Benz electricals, his bills are even moderate compair to Benz affairs, but he has a serious problem of keeping to appointment. if you can tolerate that, then you are good to go with him.

Please, where in Lagos are they located? Benz affairs and the one you mentioned. You have their contact details? I appreciate

Siena:

A car is as reliable as the owner / user wants it to be.

I have owned 40 Audi models from 1988 - 2015, including those with alleged reliability issues. I have had no major mechanical or electronic failure, bar the usual - CTS, O2 sensors, MAF, water ingress into relays and modules, failed brake calipers, clutch master and slave cylinders etc.

So pretty much issues that could afflict any vehicle, from any manufacturer. It all boils down to which shop you entrust your car to. European vehicles are more precision-engineered than their Japanese rivals, so are less tolerant to incorrect fixes. Older Japanese models will tolerate a lot of abuse, current models are on par with their Euro rivals, in that they are more sensitive to shoddy repairs.

A 2005 Honda / Acura can be run on a shoestring, and garbage gas and oil. Try the same on a 2012 Honda Accord, and your wallet will become limp in a very short time.

Audi became more high-tech, precision-engineered with finer tolerances about 5 years before Honda did, so if you're comparing for example, 2008 models of the Audi A8 and Acura TL, the results will surprise you. The Acura will be cheaper to run, and more tolerant of improper servicing / repairs. On the other hand, the Audi will drain your finances.

So it all boils down to how you wish to maintain these vehicles. If you intend to use qualified service personel, then either car is a good buy, with the Audi having marginally higher running costs. You'll however be rewarded with a precision piece of engineering, with AWD the Acura lacks.

If you intend to use roadies for your repairs, then it's a no-brainer. The Acura is the clear choice, providing you with a reasonably good car to get you from A to B with minimal worries.

Good luck, whichever car you choose.

Thanks for ya response. I really appreciate it.
I will go for the Audi A6 2005. Which trim do you recommend?

Do you know of any audi specialist in Lagos?

Please, anyone with info on Audi specialist mechanic in Lagos, share with me.

Nice choice of car, Ihimami.

Have you had the timing chain replaced yet, along with the associated tensioner and idlers? Because that would appear to be the 3.2 V6's weak point.

Please, i need your candid advice for a novice. i wanna purchase Audi A6 2005 AWD 3.1L V6 as my first car. Just needed for to and fro office movement on Lagos Island. Dense traffic going and coming back from work, with rare out of state travels. Do you consider this car a good buy as you're a big fan of the automaker.

Recently, I've started reading a lot on the car to get a good grounded knowledge on the car and the user reviews online aren't encouraging. what's your view? I've sent you an email request already. I really need to communicate with you before i buy this car, my other option is Acura TL 2004/2005 which according to user reviews is highly reliable but i just love the Audi A6.

With the combination of beautifully crafted exterior and interior designs with raw power and the best sound system, I am yet to see any car maker that can sway me from Audi. Most of my friends called me Mr Audi and I have won over a lot of them to share with me the excitment in owning an Audi and they are happy ever after. Below is my latest baby;

Year: 2005

Transmission: Automatic

Model: A6 Quattro

Engine: 3.2L 3123CC V6 GAS DOHC Naturally Aspirated

Doors: 4

Drive Type: AWD

Mileage: 233,786 miles

Drivetrain: All Wheel Drive

Sub Model: 3.2L

Horspower: 255

Bro, this might be a long straw but i'm seriously thinking of getting this beauty. love this car but i've read alot of bad reviews online on this vehicle and i'm scared of buying an unreliable car. Please, as a user, what do you think of it, as i guess you bought it used, whats the issues? Do you recommend it considering that i reside in lagos.

And by the Grace of God capped all the above with a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering.

Do you know what it means to be a welding engineer for IOCs? Do you know the work of safety engineers not HSE? They are not what you learn just through certifications. If you lucky to get involved in an EPCIC project in the upstream sector, you won't say you' re qualified again. That's where you see engineering in its purest form. you are on the right track though. It's not about certifications, there are soo many materials online you can read on steel construction fabrication in the and gas industry. Develop yourself everyday.

Health / Nigeria Steps Up Ebola Watch After Death. by Insanity(m): 10:00am On Jul 26, 2014
Health authorities have pushed up surveillance on Ebola fever after a Liberian man suspected of carrying the disease died early Friday. Patrick Sawyer, 40, a consultant to Liberia’s finance ministry, collapsed on July 22 at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos on arrival for a conference in Nigeria.
He died less than 24 hours later at First Consultant Medical Hospital, Obalende, Lagos, after officials said he had been put under close monitoring by Lagos State ministry of health.
In reaction, government has placed all ports of entry—seaports, airports and land borders— into Nigeria on red alert, said health minister Onyebuchi Chukwu on Friday.

All passengers on board the Asky Airline flight which brought Sawyer from Monrovia through Lome, believed to be the only people the deceased man came in contact with “have been traced and are being investigated,” Chukwu added.
He said the man had been in quarantine since collapsing at the airport and had been rushed to hospital by port health authorities.
All health workers who kept him alive since then were in personnel protective gear—body suits used in total-barrier nursing.
“Drugs and medical consumables are presently prepositioned while we are working with all the states of the federation, especially those with ports of entry to mitigate the situation,” the minister added.
Same day, the ministry opened three hotlines—08023210923, 08097979595, 07067352220—along with an email address— ebolainfo@health.gov.ng--where the public can get information on the disease or report suspicions.
Sawyer’s death is the first confirmed case involving Nigeria since the outbreak was first reported in West Africa.
At least 660 people have been killed in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since the first report.

The fatality associated with the disease, which kills nine out of every 10 people infected, means even a single case is designated an outbreak, as with most haemorrhagic fevers like Ebola. At a joint briefing Friday evening with health ministry, information minister Labaran Maku, called it a “national emergency.”
In the outcome of all-day meeting between both ministries, a new presidential committee headed by the information minister has been raised to make Nigerians aware about Ebola.
“Not because it is already spreading but because we want people to behave in such a way that we can prevent the spread,” said Maku. He said authorities were pushing out information in local language jingles on radio and television across the country, and asked the media to help ensure the messages reach every home.

“There is no need for panic. What’s important is that the ministry of health has done everything possible to bring this under control. But we need to be alert and ensure that every Nigerian knows what Ebola is all about, and then take personal responsibility of ensuring good personal health and hygiene rules,” Maku added.
It came after reports of heightened anxiety in Lagos, following the death of Sawyer, who was a technocrat working with UNICEF on its Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project.

A nurse at the hospital where Sawyer died said on condition of anonymity that Sawyer was initially responding to treatment, but his situation deteriorated despite plans to fly him back to Liberia.
He had been rushed there when he began vomiting, said the nurse, and the hospital took measures to prevent the virus spreading.

Combined teams of federal and Lagos state government officials have been working to allay fears of possible spread of the disease in the state, since its officials announced Sawyer’s discovery on Thursday.
Initial confirmation for Ebola virus disease was made at Lagos University Teaching Hospital and later confirmed at two international reference centres—the WHO reference lab in Dakar, and the Centre for Disease Control in Atlanta, USA.
Ebola, caused by a virus found in wild animal hosts, spreads through direct contact with infected animal, or from human eating or handling infected animals, according to a fact sheet released by the health ministry and the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control. Direct contact with blood or body secretions of infected people or animals is also risky, as is contact with medical equipment used by health workers.

Ebola disease takes between two and 21 days to manifest symptoms that include fever, headache, diarrhoea, vomiting, chest and stomach pain. Other symptoms may include cold, cough, joint pains, sore throat, depression and bleeding.
The fact sheet warns health workers to maintain hygiene and sanitation practice in hospitals, isolate infected patients, avoid burial rituals that include embalmment of Ebola patients’ corpses. It also mandates health workers to wear special protective clothing in dealing with Ebola patients.

Eefhay: You seem to have lost the relativity when you singled out oil companies as yard stick to measure values of engineers. How much do federal and state governments pay Engineers as compared to medical workers in the same establishment. How much do oil companies pay medical doctors. at least in any teaching hospital, you have almost all professionals be it engineers, accountant etc.. and in oil companies also, they have medical workers... Its when you compare based on establishments you tend to define lucrative.

You can't compare the rate for Engineers and doctors in an engineering establishment, you already know who's gonna be paid more. I really don't understand what the argument is all about, Engineers work in those companys and they're paid based on those rates he quoted, even higher. Do you want him to state wrong figures?

In reality, I have friends that are doctors, they earn more than some engineers, but still We have engineers earning more than doctors, is that a problem? heck, We've accountants that earn more than doctors and engineers, in doubt ask Oga Jarus. So, even if you say doctors earn more than engineers, a lot of engineers still earn more than doctors, so We keep on going round and round.

Personally, I think We should be worried about our own values as individuals, our monthly income (not salary), striving to be the best in whatever We do. Be happy with what We have as We hustle to get more.

Its good you're bragging on ya course of study but I don't know if you're in the system. In the full course of events before the exporting of crude, We have different phases, from basic engineering>detailed engineering>procurement>construction>installation>commissioning>first oil.

Geology comes in the beginning of basic engineering BE, that's like 1-2 years of discovery, examining the crude type to determine the type of topsides facilities needed to refine the crude to the required specifications. Mind you, this done with the reservoir engineers. After the BE, their works is done, in comes the detailed eng phase, work starts for the subsea engineers (depending on the location of the bloc), process eng, mechanical engineer, piping engineers, rotating equipment engineers, PDMS enigneers, structural engineers to design the facilities. This phase last for like 2-4 years, or even longer. Then procurement and purchasing of materials, construction where We have material eng, welding eng, mechanical eng, civil/structural/construction eng. And it goes on and on...this is strictly for E&P ie exploration and production coys, mostly IOCs.

So you see, geology is not the back bone discipline in this illustration. In my opinion, We all complement each other 'cause you can't work without any of them. Take Care.

In the quest for success, their is no room for excuses, complaints etc. If you want to achieve a goal, check deeply the path you need to follow to achieve such goal, acquire the skills you need, continuous education is the key. You should work as hard as your body can withstand to distinguish yourself. This is not soccer, so there are no fair plays, life is not fair anyway so you better grow a thick skin.

I used to give a lot of excuse and complaints, then I thought of the people that had a lot of reason not to succeed in life but they still did. People below my level that are now way above me, they are my inspiration. Nobody wants to hear you excuses, people want to hear that you attained success above all odds. Be an inspiration to others!

In your case, you really have nothing to lose. I don't see you regretting a 50k salary. Mind you, if you do not have a means of sustaining yourself, you will regret it. Do not expect to work to pay your fees oooo. If you do not get a full ride, you go suffer so check to make sure you get full assistance or you have enough money to pay your fees.
The oil industry is definitely a win-win situation. It's my industry so I'm better placed to advise you. College station (tamu)is definitely an excellent choice. The career fair attracts most if not all the oil majors.

Subsea engineering is actually hot now. We don't have enough people with specializations in it. The down side is obvious - it's restricted.
To cut my long story short, if your finances are sorted out, I would say go for it as you have nothing to lose

Thanks a lot. Now, i just need to research more on available financial aid, study hard for ma GRE n write a killer SoP.

Where are you guys getting all these stats. In this same U.S. Abeg OP, don't be mislead oo. Like I've told you, if your degree is not in engineering, specifically chemical, mechanical, and petroleum, this is not the best time to enter the US job market. You are in an industry that is very volatile at the moment. YOU HAVE A JOB. HOLD ON TO IT.

hey, i am a civil engineer working with a construction company in ph. I earn below 50k/mnth, with a year experience in my field. I want to start my Masters application to us schools, preferably, coastal n ocean engineering to specialize in subsea/pipeline eng. in texas (tamu)
I dont have the funds for the program, so am preparing for my GRE, hoping to get financial aid. I am not planning to come back after my program.
What's the job market for civil engineers in the petroleum industry like in the US.
Secondly, i have another option in going for offshore eng. @ TUdelft netherlands, but it still depends on the scholarship/financial aid available.
Is this a good move? considering the US job market for my field right now or should i just stay back and gain more experience without hope of salary increment in the near future.

Please i need ya candid advice.
Career / Re: It Is A Fallacy That No Knowledge Is a Wasted one by Insanity(m): 8:47pm On Aug 07, 2013
Saint Chukz: @ Op...i think in one full swoop you have succeeded in contrasting your own opinion in the initial post. In the opening line you opined that -no knowledge is wasted appears to you as axiomatic and as arguably sacrosanct, and in your last line statement you then went on to say that it would be stellar to have a "smattering" of many things. Now, with emphasis on the word "smattering", i'm trying hard to figure out how you would have done that if no single amount of time was put into it to gather the little knowledge you termed "smattering". Mind you the knowledge of a thing doesn't have to be acquired in full for you to term it actual knowledge. You also opined that having a particular knowledge of a thing that has no modicum or bearing on what the future tends to hold for you is sheer waste of time because you may never get to use it. I would say you were wrong there in that assertion because, how would you actually get to know what lies ahead of you when you haven't even gotten there? Or do you have a foreseer gift of telling what the future will bring? In my own candid opinion, i would rather opine that no knowledge is actually wasted until it is left unused. It has to be so because you never can tell when that little "survival skill" you garnered at one time or the other would become very handy to you at a critical point in your life, so i would rather not dismiss any knowledge no matter how irrelevant it may seem at a particular time on the premise that it is never going to be useful to me, when i know we all live in a constantly dynamic world. Finally, i think it is best to make myself feel "important" at any particular stage in life rather than feel "impotent" at a near unforeseeable stage in the future.

Wow! What a post.
