El rufai is just a governor. Northern governors have no control over the urchins that carry out the threats.

Destruction of Igbo lives and property up North follows a cycle and repeats every four years. I am yet to fathom out what is so appealing about the North that some people would want to invest there. But whoever chooses to live up there and die should be given a befitting burial only. Their problem!

No special tools needed. You need masons who love their job and are willing to accept daily payment instead of block count payment.

I think Phillipinos are the most patient workers I have ever seen. Even with crude tools, they still pay close attention to details.

Looks beautiful as a feature wall. If you adopt exposed brick work throughout the build, then be ready to overlook the associated surface wiring which will deface the whole project in my opinion.
It is factored into the original design. When they cut walls, they don't use hammer and chisel. Also in the surface wiring, they don't run the wires the way we do. Check out the second picture. Did you see the sockets?
It doesn't have to be used throughout the building. It could be used in lieu of external tiles or marbles.

I think the next step for me will be to buy a plot of land, design and build a bungalow with my crazy imaginations to see how it turns out. Just a project house.

I noticed that some places do not plaster over their block works and the masonry looks beautiful. They use grovers in between the blocks to create a clean finish with no chalk overs.

Advantages:
1. It saves money on cement and materials for plastering.
2. It saves money on paints

And if done right looks exquisite. This is where building construction meets art. I don't think any "block count" mason will have time for it.

But why?
Money for the berets was probably embezzled.

We cannot train ourselves because blacks are psychologically conditioned to be beggars. Sadly even in the global arena. North Koreans keep failing in most of their missile launches but they never give up. One day they will get it right. Guess who will run to them and beg for subsidized armaments? Yep! Looking at the picture that Egunmogaji posted, it is obvious that it can only do TRIANGULAR GROOVES.
But it does not take much imagination, to use the same style of Tool, to make the squarish grooves we desire, by simply replacing the triangular part, with a square-shaped plate.
Just cut SQUARE-SHAPE aluminium or part of a Pipe and weld it to the flat surface.

Pronto, you are on your way!.

This is where sound education comes-in.
A well educated mind is open to new ideas and can easily advance such ideas by way of further development.
Majority of our Contractors, though l must commend their tenacity in the face of daunting challenges, are unfortunately poorly/half educated.
There is always a place for sound education, whichever way you dice it.

Now Spyder880 you've just confirmed our view and call that contractors should plough back some profit into the business to solve the challenges of the trade and pass on some of the efficiency savings to clients.

You talk of transport costs to transfer equipment to site. Instead of buying fancy cars and marrying more wives, like some of you contractors do, why not buy a Dyna Truck for ....

. Any body who's into one form of business or the other is certainly an errand boy. Unemployment is not an excuse, as technology improves and ideas expand it is bound to occur. In order to run an actual company that intends to expand you need to conform to certain economic principles, et al. Except the company is being run by the same CEO,same accountant, same cashier, same procurement officer, same secretary, etc, etc.
The level of technology that a company embraces should be within its scope of practice. The primary goal of going into business is to turn profit even if it takes some time. A big firm like Julius Berger may not have all the technology they need which is why they subcontract sometimes.
I tailored my opinion to the needs of NL contractors who will most likely read the comment. If I need wider audience, then I will shoot for the national dailies per the excavator discussion. This is still an in-house discussion.

NB: The main thing building contractors in Nigeria need are tools that will make their work, markings and measurements straight; their curves neat. Crooked arcs should not be the norm.

. So much for contractors. Yea Yea Yeah. Not too many considerations. You acquire an excavator at $6000. Your company resides in Lagos, you get a contract to build a duplex in PHC or Enugu at about +#12M. You have a company car for your team, you transport your excavator and all machines to the site (by road or air is your choice), you get an apartment for your team to settle in an prepare the schedule for the work at hand. What exactly is the running and operating costs of your company per annum and what exactly is your take home after all deductions? You pick a loan today at about 20.5% interest and in less than 3 months time the bank writes to inform you about an increment to 28.2% due to CBN this and that. What would you do? Let's really be realistic here.
Someone who lives in Lagos and gets most contracts in Enugu or PHC needs to relocate ASAP.

Some logistics are sourced locally.

A contractor that will need a loan for $6000 to purchase such equipment in Nigeria is still an errand boy. You buy such equipment as things progress not at inception. Machinery, when managed well, pays for itself over time.

My only concern is unemployment.

The excavating laborers can be retrained on other specialized skills/task that are less backbreaking.

I know on most shows that I watch, builders and workers try to get above ground as fast as possible and followed by sealing the structure to protect them from the elements.

Not all builders can afford this anyways.
Retraining is always a possibility.

Who will retrain them? The contractor? Yeah right.

The path of least resistance is to light up the excavator. grin

Of course the work is tedious, but the workers are already calculating how much they will earn per partition.
The fact that not everyone could dig the foundation adds more to their job security.

You know we can always use a machine to dig a borehole. Yet some guys show up with
veins sticking out like NEPA wires and elect to dig 250 feet with raw muscle.

There are many factors in construction in Nigeria. Like Spyder880 pointed out, if you hurry the job, the
owner will start having buyer's remorse and demand renegotiation. So what do you do then?

The landing cost of a cheap one from Harbor freight will be less than $6000 (including clearing). A lot of contractors can afford it but will never buy it. They will rather add more cars to their fleet.

Then and again, if you buy it and put a lot of workers out of work, you may wake up one day and backhoe will be up in flames. Double wahala! So let them dig. There is no rush in Nigeria. African time reigns supreme. You can hurry up the excavation, start construction and oga shows up a month later to state that he/she is out of funds. So why the rush?

Their strength lies in the Nigerian factor of cowardice. None is willing to sacrifice for the good of all. Senators collect huge allowances, embezzle funds and get rewarded with chieftancy titles. Does that look like a place where they are marked for capture? Blame the society.
Foreign Affairs › Re: The Rise And Fall Of Samuel Doe Of Liberia (graphic Pics & Video ) by InvertedHammer: 10:07pm On Jun 05, 2017
This is why I laugh when people refer to OBJ, IBB, etc as strong men of Nigerian politics. Their saving grace is that Nigerians are naturally cowards. Put OBJ or IBB in Samuel Doe's position and you will see a grown man cry. Abacha hadn't even touched Oladipo Diya when he started paying obeisance and cried like a little girl. So much for a decorated military General. No mortal is as powerful as gullible followers would like to agree. Physical or bodily pain trumps all machismo.

Two things you don't do in Nigeria even though it involves freedom of expression:

Career › Re: 5 Wrong Reasons For Becoming An Entrepreneur by InvertedHammer: 2:16pm On Jun 04, 2017
KillerBeauty:
5 Wrong Reasons for Becoming an Entrepreneur

There are many good reasons to become an entrepreneur. We live in a place and time that not only celebrates entrepreneurship, but makes it both possible and rewarding. Even those of us who never take the plunge at least occasionally fantasize about what it would be like to create and run a business of our own, whether we're after the creative potential, the feeling of autonomy or the chance to follow our dreams.

I firmly believe that anyone with the right dedication can become a successful entrepreneur, regardless of his or her motivations. However, there are some "wrong" reasons to become an entrepreneur, and if they constitute your motivations, you'll be more likely to be dissatisfied with your work, will burn out,or will actually fail.

1. To get rich

Thanks to the popularization of outlier entrepreneurs who seemed to become overnight billionaires, there's a common misconception that entrepreneurship is the fast track to getting rich. As the owner of your business, you'll be entitled to at least a portion of the profits your company makes.

.
Very true.

Apparently people become entrepreneurs because they are tired of being rich. They cannot wait to have a taste of extreme poverty, so they start investing.

let Make it short, i have been writing jamb from 2009 till lastly in 2013 when I got admission to study marketing in one the state University in South East.
I,m in my final year now studying marketing just few months for me to graduate.
You may be wondering while i,m writing this, now let me tell you.
I,m writing this first because ......
1 I,m frustrated right now because after graduation I will start roaming the streets looking for job.
2 Had it been I use those time I spent in writing jamb and do business by now I would have been s millionaire by now.
3 Had it been my parents advice me to learn trade by now I would have been my own oga controlling millions.
4 I have to start afresh and enter the streets for hustling because there is no jobs out there, so why the certificate when I can read and write with secondary education.

Then, why did I spent all the years looking for certificate that I may not use tomorrow because streets pays more than salary.
I remember how I hustle during holidays to meet up the needs in school thinking after graduation good jobs are there waiting for me.
Should I said I wasted my time acquiring University education or what, somebody should answer me.
I think I regret Ever going to University.
