Food › Re: Why Do Non Yorubas Particularly The Igbos Don't Like Pepper In Their Soups by irunoko(op): 5:48pm On Apr 22, 2023 |
Probz: Anyone who seriously thinks Igbos don’t cook with a lot of pepper should take a bath in pepper soup laced with ground uziza seeds and freshly-harvested ose-Nsuk(k)a. Igbos own spice when it fits the universal vibe of a particular food (nkwobi, ishi-ewu ans pepper soup are supposed to sort of be piping hot). You won’t normally find that level of heat in rice that’s been made for other people. Individual people may turn the spice down or up depending on who they’re cooking for at home or wherever. But in a universal sense pepper-soup (which certainly isn’t something the typical non-Igbo/Deltan even eats like that) calls for … plenty of pepper, whereas normal stew doesn’t. Beyond that it’s just a matter of personal preference. Some people like their onugbu soup to have reasonable traces of bitterness so don’t wash the bitter-leaves as much, other people would rather it was honey-sweet so they wash and wash and wash. Some people like to form the base of their jollof rice with a mixture of bleached palm oil and goose/duck fat, others use turkey or groundnut oil, still-others use just standard vegetable oils. Some parboil. Some don’t. Some prefer akpu. Others prefer nni-ji (pounded yam). Some people particularly like pepper and base part of their food-culture around it, others just see it as a condiment used for technical necessity beyond foods what really, really call for plenty-pepper (ji mmiri-oku being another). People like what they like as individuals. quite enlightening.thank you |

Probz: Igbos like pepper (especially being one of the ethnic groups with a rightful claim to pepper-soup, not to mention ose-Nsuka being indigenous to Igboland and used quite a lot in certain traditional dishes) and personal preference is an individual thing anyway. Just in moderation. I see.thanks for your civility in explanation |

Shedrack777: the reason i said what i felt is because the yorubas don't also use cray fish, smoked fish, okporoko, and stock fish to cook because they dislike them. so why emphasising only on the pepper which the yorubas love but disliked by igbos? o really? I wasn't aware that the Igbos dislike pepper.this is just New to me.anyway thanks for the information Secondly yes I emphasized on only the pepper because a lot of people like myself get some tingling feeling of nausea and unsatisfaction when they eat foods devoid of pepper. Anyway you have answered my question.i have gotten the reasons from your response.thank you |
Food › Re: Why Do Non Yorubas Particularly The Igbos Don't Like Pepper In Their Soups by irunoko(op): 8:32am On Apr 22, 2023 |
Shedrack777: all these you wrote that the igbos cook with, the yorubas don't also use them to cook. so why the question? even though you wrote you're not being tribalistic, i still felt you're being tribalistic #sighs# l knew this tribalistic issue will come up that was why I stated this is a NON TRIBALISTIC ISSUE and without prejudice to any tribe.its just a question I asked because I discovered that it's a common pattern so I wanted to know if it's individual preferences or a cultural thing N.b I know politicians have fanned the embers of tribal divisions and it's still playing out even after elections that any little thing is immediately misconstrued to mean tribal bias.anyway if you feel so, THAT IS NOT THE MOTIVE OF THIS THREAD.this has to do with food and everything pertaining to the distinctive similarities and differences in foods among the igbos, thank you sir. |

Without prejudice to any tribe (that's not my intention) why do the igbos not like adding pepper to their stew, sauce, soups and meals.i had an experience yesterday.i went to buy somethings in the market and I was hungry and decided to stop by a buka within a plaza and I asked the waiter what they had she said it's only oha and egusi they have left.i said ok please give me egusi.she brought it and I noticed there was no pepper inside the egusi.this is not the first time I'm eating the Igbo version of egusi.they have their own unique ways of making egusi which is slightly different from the Yorubas and I always notice a similar pattern in their egusi and other soups NO PEPPER.i could still tolerate a soup without oil but pepper, arrghhh.anyway It was delicious but i didn't feel the satisfaction of eating which brings me to my question
1.is it that it's a culture thing that it's against your ways to cook food with pepper?
2.why so much emphasis on Cray fish, smoked fish etc without pepper and Oil
3.why is the eba always startchy.thank you |

Kobojunkie: But we live in social media age and video is a way to get your point across these days.
I am not suggesting she was coerced into this marriage either. Rather, what I suspect is a deal was reached between her and the man in question. They are both likely aware that it is not love that binds them but instead his want of her in return for providing all of her financial needs. That is what marriage used to be during the time of our ancestors — even to this day with most even though we don't like to admit it—, isn't it? well you're right |

Kobojunkie: Maybe the marriage was arranged and she is just letting folks know that love is not where the buck really is. well the video is not necessary, inappropriate and embarrassing.if she was coerced into the wedding there are better ways of dealing with the situation What she did is counterproductive because the love in the man will die immediately if he sees the video and he'll make the marriage hell for her |

The husband and those that followed him to pay her bride price must be in deep regrets now.
She even had the temerity to ask other ladies to "chop" any man's money. Na ashaw0 kobo kobo this one be. it's really embarrassing.the marriage is still at its infancy state and she's already self sabotaged the marriage.now her husband will be looking at her like a greedy, desperate and untrustworthy person.even if you mean well all your actions will be seen as eye service and fake.its not even funny and again if you are not done with the streets, leave marriage for decent women who value what family is There's nothing she wants to say that will clean up the mess she has created.she cannot even say this is a joke If her mother in-law in connivance with her husband run hakimi on her now she'll be start playing victim |
