(Ojukwu) had three wives. His first, Njideka, a law student he met at Oxford and wed in 1962, died in 2010. His second, Stella Onyeador, died in 2009. He married Bianca Odinaka Onoh, a former beauty queen and businesswoman 34 years his junior, in 1994. Returning to Nigeria in 1956, he rejected his father’s business overtures, worked on development in remote villages, and in 1957 joined the army. He called himself an amateur soldier, but rose rapidly in the ranks after Nigeria gained independence in 1960. In 1966, he became military governor of the Ibo region, and declared Biafran independence after repression enveloped his people.

This is how it went down.  Interesting that it is on clay.  The few times I've watched the Davis Cup, it's always been on hard court.  I suppose it depends on the hosting location.  So, Nadal, the king of clay court tennis, takes it in front of a home crowd.  How fitting!

Spain wins Davis Cup after Nadal rallies from terrible start to beat Argentina’s Del Potro

https://www.washingtonpost.com/rf/image_404h/2010-2019/WashingtonPost/2011/12/05/Production/WashingtonPost/Images/Spain_Tennis_Davis_Cup_Final_0e435-602.jpg

By Associated Press, Published: December 4 | Updated: Monday, December 5, 1:15 AM

SEVILLE, Spain — Rafael Nadal is a winner once again.

The second-ranked Nadal overcame a terrible start to beat Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-6 (0) on Sunday to clinch Spain’s third Davis Cup title in four years.

Nadal’s first title since winning his sixth French Open in June followed a run of below-par performances in which he acknowledged feeling less passionate about the sport as another long season took its toll. This victory gave Spain a 3-1 series lead, good enough for the country’s fifth Davis Cup title overall.

Nadal showed flashes of that poor end-of-season run, but eventually settled into his usual dominant groove on clay. Del Potro also committed 64 unforced errors as Nadal earned his 20th straight victory since debuting in the competition in 2004 with a loss.

“I’ve never had the chance to secure the winning point of a Davis Cup. In the end it came down to me,” said Nadal, who ensured Argentina remained the only nation to play in four finals without a victory.

Teammates Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco and captain Albert Costa were among those who enveloped Nadal after he dropped to the ground in celebration, while del Potro exited the arena in tears.

It was the third Davis Cup trophy for Nadal, who secured a point in the win over the United States as a teenager at the same Olympic Stadium in the 2004 final.

“It’s a special feeling since you’re playing at home in the last event of the year and it’s to win the Davis Cup and all of the emotion and happiness that comes with being on the court,” said Nadal, who missed the quarterfinal win in the United States before returning in the semifinals against France. “It’s going to be impossible to repeat.”

Not since the United States teams of the late 1970s and early 1980s has a country dominated the competition to such an extent.

“On home clay, they are probably one of the best teams in history,” Argentina captain Tito Vazquez said after Spain stretched its record home winning streak to 21 series.

While Nadal has come to rule on clay since 2005 — losing only seven matches on the surface since then— he endured his most lopsided set loss in the competition as del Potro hit forehand winners at will to break serve four straight times.

Del Potro’s pinpoint accuracy compounded Nadal’s sluggish start and gave the visitors hope of becoming the first team since Australia 72 years ago to come back from a 2-0 deficit in the Davis Cup final.

While del Potro struggled on serve throughout, the Argentine overpowered Nadal with a laser-like forehand that contributed to his 44 winners.

But del Potro then started misfiring and Nadal found his rhythm to break back in the second game of the second set before finally holding serve.

“That was a very important moment,” said Nadal, who routed Juan Monaco in his opening match. “After that game I felt like the match started for me.”

Nadal steadied thanks to his strong backhand and eventually smashed a forehand winner to secure the set and send nearly all 23,000 fans into wild celebrations.

“I’ve never played in front of such a crowd before,” said Nadal, one of only seven players to have completed a career grand slam of major titles.

Del Potro, who let slip a 2-1 set advantage in his opening singles loss to David Ferrer that took nearly five hours, sprayed his shots as nerves and fatigue appeared to creep into his game. Nadal ripped back-to-back forehand winners down the line to break early in the third set.

But a late comeback enabled Del Potro to break Nadal four times in the fourth set and send it to a tiebreaker. The Argentine then made four errors as Nadal raced ahead before securing victory without losing a point by hitting a forehand winner.

“He was dominating before that and I thought this might be the last set of the series, so I have to give it all,” said Del Potro, the 2009 U.S. Open champion. “I played a good match despite losing. I felt that once again I was very close to winning.”

Nadal and Ferrer are a combined 28-0 on clay in singles for Spain, which beat the Czech Republic in the 2009 final and opens its defense against Kazakhstan in February. Argentina, which also lost the 2008 final to Spain, will play Germany.

“It’s not going to be easy to get us four together again,” Ferrer said. “There are many talented players ready to step in. It’s a lot of years together and each one has to manage his calendar so to find a series where we’re all together again, and I don’t see that happening.”

Nadal said he won’t play in the event next year so he can focus on defending his gold medal at the London Olympics.

Lagos army munitions dump explosions leave approx 1,000 people  dead[/size]

At least 600 people are now known to have been killed as a result of huge explosions at an army munitions dump in Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos.
Many of the dead are children and babies who drowned in a canal as thousands of terrified residents fled the Isolo district near the scene of the blasts on Sunday.

Bodies have also been found inside the military compound housing the depot. Others died as artillery shells ripped through densely populated suburbs.

President Olusegun Obasanjo has visited the scene and ordered a full military inquiry into what caused the explosions.

Stampede

The force of the blasts in the Ikeja area near the airport shook buildings and shattered windows in the city centre, 15 kilometres (nine miles) away. Most of the fires were finally extinguished early on Monday morning.

Click here for a map of the area

An army spokesman told the BBC that the blaze had started in a market next to the munitions dump.

Nick Braley, who was less than a mile away from the barracks, told BBC News Online that shells could be seen exploding in the sky. The noise was like thunder, he said.

Another eyewitness, who gave his name as Phil, said he was at his parents' house when he saw a "mighty mushroom plume", which was followed by "an ear-shattering blast that set off car alarms on the usually quiet street".

"This barrage continued for hours as people, pet dogs and other animals ran helter-skelter without a definite direction," he said.

Canal of death

The barracks are in the middle of a crowded residential area, with one of the city's busiest transport interchanges just outside the gates.

Thousands fled in panic from the army quarters and nearby residential areas as shells exploded across the city.

The BBC's Dan Isaacs says that in the chaos and confusion people fled for what they believed to be the safety of a banana plantation, but then slipped down into a swampy canal.

As they struggled for their lives more people surged down into the water.

Nigerian barracks are like towns in themselves. Soldiers live there with their wives and families and traders often set up stalls inside.

Unexploded shells

Hospitals in the area say they are overwhelmed by the disaster.

A senior nurse at the Isolo General Hospital said they had received 152 bodies during the morning. "Most of them are children. The youngest of them is four," said Titilayo Akinogun.

"More bodies have been taken to other hospitals," she said.

Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu is reported to have arrived at the scene to supervise the rescue effort.

Our correspondent says the market was gutted, a nearby church completely destroyed and a hospital damaged. A school also took a direct hit.

Unexploded shells are still lying on the streets.
OMG!  This was horrible.  I will never forget it.  I was in USA though.  People drowning n the lagoon - that murky water - because they were running to and fro in the dark.  They had heard the explosions and didn't know if Naija was under attack.  The news coverage here was highlighting the fact that army barracks and ammunition storage was so close to, and sometimes smack-dab in the middle of, civilian residential areas.  sad sad sad

Herman Cain Suspends His Campaign
New York Times

An unapologetic and defiant Herman Cain suspended his presidential campaign on Saturday, pledging that he “would not go away” even as he abandoned hope of winning the Republican nomination in the face of escalating accusations of sexual misconduct.

“As of today, with a lot of prayer and soul searching, I am suspending my presidential campaign,” Mr. Cain said at a rally here, surrounded by supporters chanting his name. “Because of the continued distractions, the continued hurt caused on me and my family, not because we are not fighters. Not because I’m not a fighter.”

In suspending his candidacy, as opposed to saying that he was quitting the race or ending his bid, Mr. Cain maintained his ability to accept money to pay for his campaign so far and to finance the new venture that he called his Plan B: to travel the country promoting his tax and foreign policy plans. If Mr. Cain had decided to formally close his campaign organization, he would not be able to use donations that may come in.

The collapse of Mr. Cain’s candidacy, which took off despite his eclectic background as a former pizza executive with virtually no political experience, eliminated another Republican candidate who had briefly led in the polls and drew voters who were unhappy with the assumed frontrunner, Mitt Romney. Newt Gingrich, who is now rising in the polls, could well benefit from Mr. Cain’s exit.

Mr. Cain said he would issue an endorsement soon, without indicating whom he would back.

Mr. Cain, with his wife, Gloria, at his side at the Atlanta rally, said the accusations of sexual harassment and of a 13-year affair were untrue. “I’m at peace with my God,” he said. “I’m at peace with my wife, and she is at peace with me.”

He went out much the way he came in. The circuslike atmosphere — complete with numerous delays, barbecue, a blues band and supporters in colonial-era dress — was in keeping with the campaign’s irreverence and disarray since its inception.

For days now, the campaign had fueled a “will he or won’t he?” storm of speculation, at once thriving on the news media’s attention while denouncing it as the cause of Mr. Cain’s plummeting popularity. Mr. Cain’s critics have long posited that he has been more interested in creating celebrity for himself — as a means to sell books and increase speaking fees — than in making a serious bid for the presidency.

Indeed, in his remarks, Mr. Cain boasted about rising from near obscurity, saying, “Right now, my name I.D. is probably 99.9.”

Still, Mr. Cain, whose standing among likely Republican caucusgoers in Iowa in the latest poll by The Des Moines Register stood at 8 percent, took what may be his last moment in such a large spotlight to denounce the political culture in Washington.

Mr. Cain’s admirers in Atlanta were surprised and disappointed. They blamed the news media, with one of them screaming into the press area after Mr. Cain’s speech.

Lisa Chambers, 48, an unpaid volunteer with the campaign from Snellville, Ga., said: “This is not what I wanted. Not at all. I’m not sure what to do now. I’m so disappointed.”

But other supporters were more pragmatic. Dean Kleckner, a former president of the Iowa Farm Bureau, who gave Mr. Cain an early endorsement, said: “I hate to say this, because he was a remarkable man in many ways, but I honestly think he did the right thing. I’m disappointed in a way, relieved in a way. The polls were just killing him lately.”

Mr. Cain’s political unraveling was as swift and sudden as his ascent. It began just one month after an unlikely surge in the polls, from the bottom ranks to the top tier of Republican candidates, fueled by the strength of his performance in debates, the novelty of his 9-9-9 tax plan, and his Sept. 24 surprise victory in the Florida straw poll.

With his golden voice and folksy manner, Mr. Cain appealed to voters who sought an anti-establishment candidate. Mr. Cain, 65, grew up in poverty in the segregated South, the son of a janitor and a maid. But beyond his personal charm and rags-to-riches biography, he had an eclectic, intriguing résumé: chief executive of Godfather’s Pizza, conservative radio host and chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Mo.

Toward the end of October, more than one survey found that Mr. Cain, who has never held public office, essentially tied with Mr. Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who has had a consistent lead in most polls.

The accusations of sexual misconduct rocked the campaign of a candidate who professed to be a devout Christian and family man, pitching himself to the conservative core of the Republican Party, stood accused of a pattern of lewd sexual behavior by several women. And some of the details were graphic.

A Chicago woman, Sharon Bialek, was the first to come forward publicly. Ms. Bialek said that Mr. Cain made an unwanted and rough physical advance on her 14 years ago when he was the chief of the National Restaurant Association, a lobbying group. After taking her out for a night on the town in Washington, she said, he suggested she engage with him sexually in return for his assistance in finding a job.

Within days, a second woman came forward. That woman, Karen Kraushaar, 55, worked in the government affairs office of the restaurant association for a relatively short time from 1998 to 1999, her tenure being cut short, she said, by her run-ins with Mr. Cain and the discomfort it created for her.

Two other women who complained of harassment by Mr. Cain remained anonymous. But one of those women and Ms. Kraushaar both received the equivalent of a year’s salary in settlements from the restaurant group.

From the moment the harassment accusations were revealed by Politico, on the night of Oct. 30, Mr. Cain, 65, has strongly proclaimed his innocence and sought to cast blame for what he called a smear campaign in a number of different directions. He first accused the liberal news media, then the rival campaign of Gov. Rick Perry of Texas. Ultimately, the Cain campaign acknowledged that it had no evidence of a conspiracy. But still, Mr. Cain’s own version of events surrounding the accusations shifted again and again. Inexperienced on the national stage, he issued an avalanche of confusing and often contradictory statements.

Polls conducted at the time, however, suggested that the crisis was not eroding Mr. Cain’s standing as a top-tier candidate. He continued to campaign as if he was not at the center of a swirling controversy, ignoring the accusations in speeches and not taking questions on the subject from reporters.

“We’re getting back on message, end of story,” Mr. Cain said after a debate in early November. At no point during the nearly three-hour event, a fund-raiser that began with cocktails, did he address the accusations.

“Don’t even go there,” Mr. Cain warned reporters who clamored to ask him at least one question after the event.

But the accusations of sexual misconduct were not Mr. Cain’s only stumbling block.

The very qualities that endeared Mr. Cain to so many conservatives appeared to be beginning to undercut his chances, as questions were raised about his management style and foreign policy expertise.

In a videotaped interview with the editorial board of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that went viral on the Web, Mr. Cain became flustered when asked to assess President Obama’s policy toward Libya, raising questions about his command of foreign policy as he lurched over five minutes from awkward pauses to halting efforts to answer.

Compared with his rivals, Mr. Cain hardly campaigned in New Hampshire and Iowa. Former staff members complained that he spent the bulk of his time on a book tour through the South when he should have been organizing a grass-roots operation. He occasionally mishandled potential big donors or ignored real voters, former staff members and supporters said in interviews.

Still, the “Cain train,” as he liked to call his campaign, chugged along, drawing spirited crowds who chanted “9-9-9” and “We want Herman Cain!”

As Thanksgiving approached, it seemed as though Mr. Cain might survive his troubles after all. The whirlwind of news about the allegations had died down a bit. And Mr. Cain spent his time off the trail brushing up on foreign and national security issues. But just then, on the Monday after Thanksgiving, a fifth woman, Ginger White, came forward, telling a local television reporter in Atlanta, that she and Mr. Cain had only recently ended a 13-year extramarital affair.

Ms. White produced phone records in an effort to prove that they called or texted each other frequently, and Mr. Cain acknowledged giving her financial support — and also, that his wife of 43 years had been unaware of what he insisted was only a friendship.

The day after Ms. White’s revelation, Mr. Cain said he was considering dropping his bid, as leading conservative voices and party leaders began to question his handling of all the women’s claims. And some of his supporters and defenders also began backing away.

On a conference call with staff members and a few big supporters on Tuesday, Mr. Cain said, “It’s also taken a toll on my wife and my family, as you would imagine.”

As of late Thursday, Mr. Cain said that the ultimate decision would rest with Mrs. Cain, with whom he spent Friday night at home in suburban Atlanta.

and you will find your voice.
You may posses immense wealth
come with us
and you will become love's beggar.
You may think yourself a master
come with us
and love will turn you into a slave.
If you've lost your spirit,
come with us
take off your silk coverings,
put on our rough cloak
and we will bring you back to life.

He has dreads too?  The Ras Tafari no like them batty boys mon.  Don't go to Jamaica, mon.

Maybe the "developed" countries can now put their money where their mouth is - start issuing visas to all the boys who are gonna inundate their embassies while seeking asylum from persecution for being homo-men.  wink  Win-Win for Naija.

Seriously, this is the kind of legislation and outcry that's not even needed.  The law is already on the books, against homo-behaviour.  And, what kind of church is gonna perform same-sex marriage in Naija?  Even so, the courts won't recognise it.  The law-makers really could have found something better to do.
