More foreign affairs new:

A couple of hours till the SOTU - State of the Union - speech.  That's what's going on here in the good ol' USA.

I love Chris Matthews (MSNBC).  He's at his irritable condescending best.  Ripping these right-wingers in his show a new one.  What sent him into this tirade?  His new sworn enemy, right-wing tea party favorite, congresswoman Michelle Bachman.  She's the new Newt Gingrich - standing up to make her ridiculous speeches any time the floor is open.

He just ran a clip of her talking about slavery, the US constitution and the founding fathers and, and getting it all wrong!   "This woman knows nothing; do you not vet people before you select them for leadership position," thunders Chris.  Go on, old boy!

ChinenyeN:
I can understand why too. Both ethnicity and race are social constructs, they convey much of the same thing, and in many instances (if not all) they're interchangeable.
I know, right?  Each society decides their own racial classification.  In America, where their whole history is bound by the relationship between the black slaves and white "oppressors" the truly lasting construct is your skin color and what percentage of your ancestry is black.  They had that 1/12(?) black blood disctinction in Louisiana, didn't they?

Americans, Black and White, will look at someone any other society will consider caucasian and proclaim her black.

We're so used to the black vs white racial classification, that's why sometimes when an Igbo calls a Yoruba racist (or vice versa), he'll say, "why am I racist, we're the same color, you mean tribalist right," but in actuality, race can be any group/cultural distinction.

Or do you agree with the clsassification that the only racial groups are, Caucasian, Negroid and Mongoloid?  I'm asking with sincerity.

Sort of what we call clans. I see no difference between clan or tribes. I consider my tribe Aro-Igbo, but my ethnicity is Igbo. Igbos are not a tribe.[/quote]Clan is not the same as tribe.  It would be considered a subset of tribe. Smaller and fitting into a specific tribe which in turn will fit into an ethnic group which will fit info a racial group.  Some consider ethnic group and race the same thing.

So how did it end up in African lexicon? Abi somebody de call us monkey indirectly.
hehehe!  grin
It's not just used in relation to Africans.  I've heard Oyinbos refer to themselves or others as being tribal.  For example, amongst the elite who guard their territory and their social standings, they'll refer to themselves as being tribal, or others will call them "tribal."  Or sometimes, the word tribal will be substituted for the word "clannish."  I'm not a linguist and won't get bogged down with the evolution of the word, but I do believe it is used for a variety of groups not just monkeys. lol
PoliticsRe: I Want To Meet Ekubear, alj Harem And Ibime by isalegan2: 5:49am On Jan 25, 2011
But the issue is, is a TRIBALIST someone who hates other tribes, as AljHarem says, or just someone who loves their tribe?  It's the term Eku-Bear was not sure about.  He says he is a tribalist who looks out for the interest of his own people.

Bear, can you clear it up, please?
PoliticsRe: I Want To Meet Ekubear, alj Harem And Ibime by isalegan2: 5:43am On Jan 25, 2011
alj harem:
to me the classification of TRIBAL or TRIBALIST can not be used in the context here

if a man loves his people and think good about his people he is neither a tribal person or a tribalist.

A tribalist is someone like ezeuche, onlytruth, fstranger because they show love to there people but also hate other ethnic groups because they are yoruba or igbo etc
Okay smiley I like you, Alhaji.  I understand your point.  My post wasn't attacking you though.  It just happened to follow yours.

With naming names of who is or who is not a tribalist?  At one time or another, different names get bandied about.  There are people who believe OnlyTruth is sensible and fair-minded and mature and the opposite of a tribalist; you're saying he is a tribalist.  I never thought Eku_Bear was a tribalist; someone else is saying he is.

Other people are so over-the-top with their chest-beating, I don't know if they're putting us on .  Other times people are reacting to other perceived tribalist attack.  Nairaland is weird.  That's all I have to say.
PoliticsRe: I Want To Meet Ekubear, alj Harem And Ibime by isalegan2: 5:27am On Jan 25, 2011
I think it might help to differentiate being "Tribal" from being a "Tribalist."  At least for Nairaland use.  It seems this issue will never go away here.

Tribal meaning someone who is aware of tribal distinctions and traditions and history, as oppossed to someone who is a Tribalist, as in racist towards other tribes.

If you can come up with a better classification, let's hear it.  smiley
