Concerns are growing over the decision of the Nigerian government to purchase 12 A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft from the United States, Premium Times reports.

David Kuranga, an investment and political risk consultant, described the warplanes as “crop dusters” and advised the government against going ahead with the purchase.

Mr. Kuranga, who is the managing director of Kuranga and Associates, in the statement, said the warplanes fall below the standard of aircraft used by even the military of African countries such as Egypt and South Africa.

“In a conventional match-up or joint-task force, if Nigeria were ever asked to partner in a multi-national coalition with middle-income nations like Egypt, South Africa, Brazil, or Indonesia, the Nigerian “Air Force” equipped with the A-29 light attack fighters would be joke!” he wrote in a statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES.

“They are comparatively slow, fly at lower altitudes, and are much more susceptible to anti-aircraft artillery that even rebel fighters in Mali were in possession of,” he wrote.

Mr. Kuranga also said that the warplanes are too expensive even as they are inadequate for serious military operations. He said they would constitute waste of taxpayers’ money.

“The fact that the Nigerian government is considering putting in over a 100 million dollars of state money to purchase these inadequate aircraft, as a means of upgrading Nigeria’s air defenses is a laughable! Further it is a poor investment and a waste of state resources.”

He said he found it baffling that the US authorities were seeking to block the sale of the obsolete warplanes to Nigeria when they should be thankful that the Nigerian government is relieving them of such antiquated aircraft.

He said Nigeria should aim to buy more advance warplanes that will put it at par with other militaries in the continent.

“These more advanced fighters would put the Nigerian Air Force on equal footing with South Africa, Egypt, and other middle income emerging powers. Fighter jets like the Gripen SAAB JAS-39 are among the most cost effective and capable fighter jets in operation today. The new Gripen JAS-39 has a price tag of around 40,000 million a unit, but Saab, desperate for new customers has the option of versions of the aircraft using the frames of the older model, already built and in storage at a much lower price tag.”

I doubt your Army is planning to get in a mud fight on home court. My belief is they'll mainly use Air power- Drones, Helicopters and Planes to fight this time. They've been acquiring more air weapons these days and I think this is why.

And who suffers? Their land is polluted already and it will only get worse. And it's not like the Nigerian Government ever paid it any special mind before Buhari came in and ordered it's clean up. Nigeria is broke and I doubt the clean up is going to happen anytime soon if the multi-nationals don't obey the directive. So, making an already bad situation even worse is not in their best interest.

I don't understand the bolded, how are they marginalized, is it in terms of appointments or developments? If its the former, then you will like to know that they also benefit from "Federal Character", and if its "Development" then you'll also be glad to know that THE WHOLE COUNTRY IS UNDERDEVELOPED!. One big, huge, crap of unplanned mess. This what men like Min. Fashola and Governor El Rufai are trying to change. The only cities in Nigeria that have truly benefited from Oil wealth are Lagos and Abuja, all the others are nothing to write home about, honestly. The money meant for the development of the country mostly developed legs and wound up in private pockets.

I want to ask you: Don't the South East have Political Parties? Don't they field candidates for the Presidency? Are they banned/barred from doing so? Are Ibo citizens prohibited from voting? If you and I know the answers to the above questions, then how can you reasonably say they are being denied the Presidency?

Politics involves a lot of dexterity. Sometimes you have to work with someone you ordinarily wouldn't want to be associated with, but you have to come together for a common good. The South Eastern politicians are not deft at all, they lack finesse. And even though I believe when they look in the mirror they realize that fact, in public, they choose the easier route of blaming "Marginalization". Aside Governor Rochas, and maybe Dr. Ngige, who else from that Region has extended an arm out to other parts of the country? The type of politics the South Eastern Politicians involve in is one that alienates. They need to come up with a comprehensive formula that promotes unity instead of division. So long as votes are the preferred method of choosing leaders in Nigeria, the Ibos will always lose out if their politicians do not change tactics; thats not marginalization, its politics. Its a competition, everyone is out to win and nobody is going to give you anything on a platter of gold.That is why you'll see Goodluck Jonathan work with a man like Col.Sambo Dasuki or President Buhari work with a man like Rotimi Amaechi. You have to give and take.

As far as I am concern, the failure to field an Igbo President or Middlebelt Christian or GEJ by PDP in 2019, is an open invitation for SS/SE to vote APC, if Buhari makes some strategic infrastructure investment in the region. i.e. Deep Seaport in Rivers or Bayelsa in addition to Akwa Ibom Ibaka deep seaport, Second Niger Bridge completion. Enugu International Airport completion.

Financial crimes are within the purview of the EFCC to investigate and prosecute, not for state high courts or officials. That is why the FG was/is in charge of financial corruption cases against Ibori, Alamieyeseigha, Lamido of Jigawa, Nnamani of Enugu and so on.

It is the responsibility of the EFCC. The state has played its role by the panel of inquiry set up and petitions by organisations against Amaechi.

Keep quiet if you don't know what you're taking about. Your country is operating a Federal System of Government. In this system, the States have their own Justice System. If Amaechi is accused of stealing FROM Rivers State, it is up to that Government to Prosecute him. The only way the Center can come in is if he broke Federal Law too. None of you has accused him of stealing from the National Treasury, you've only accused him of stealing from State coffers. In that instance, it is up to the State Government to grant you the Justice you are seeking.
