Nigerian civil war and role in the Asaba Massacre
During the Nigerian Civil War, Muhammad was General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Nigerian Army's 2nd Division. This division was responsible for the legendary beating back of the Biafran Army from the midwestern region, as well as crossing the River Niger and linking up with the 1st Division, which was marching down from Nsukka and Enugu. Lieutenant Ishola Williams, an officer who served under then Colonel Muhammed alleged that Muhammed ordered the summary execution of Biafran prisoners of war. Professors Bird and Ottanelli in a study titled "The History and Legacy of the Asaba, Nigeria, Massacres" document the mass murder of civilians (often referred to as the Asaba Massacre) by troops of the 2nd Division under Colonel Murtala Muhammad.

Muhammad's encounter with disaster during the war happened shortly after, as he attempted to cross the River Niger to Biafra. Despite the recommendation of his superiors at Army Headquarters in Lagos that he wait for the bridge, which had been blown up by the retreating Biafran forces, to be rebuilt, he insisted on a riverine crossing. Twice he was beaten back, but he steadfastly kept resolve and finally made it through on his third attempt. Shortly after this, Muhammad fed up with reprimands from Army HQ, decided to quit his command and left for an extended holiday in the United Kingdom, but not before threatening to resign his commission. His historic military feats during the war won him National acclaim and respect even from his adversaries.

Guys, you should always check history records first before you make absolute statements such as the greatest leader that Nigeria ever had. It shows that you do not know Nigerian history or you did not do you home work at all. The troops under Murtala's command were responsible for hunting down hundreds of all the innocent civilian males they could find, anywhere in Asaba, they lined them all up in the middle of town, and shot them all in the head in extra-judicial manner and executed every single one of them point blank even though these men were not soldiers and did not pose any threat or danger at all to the Nigerian Army or do anything to hurt Nigeria. And his men also looted the Central Bank in Asaba and stole everything that was not nailed to the ground.

They also raped several Asaba young girls and women. And used them for their personal and perverse sexual pleasures. Imagine if one of them was your mother or sister or your daughter that was being raped by the Nigerian Army? How would you feel? So you think that all these things were good enough to make Murtala a great leader and a war hero in your book? You are looking only at one side of the coin. Remember that a coin has two sides. In a civilized country, your hero Murtala (along with many other high-ranking Nigerian officers), would have been tried for their war crimes, as war criminals just like Charles Taylor of Liberia was tried and convicted at the World International Criminal Court in the Hague, Netherlands.

Maybe Murtala did change after the war but he was no hero. And he was not punished for war crimes. He never apologized publicly either for the crimes committed under him. In the Army, you are responsible for your men's actions. You get credit for any good that they do and you are implicated for all the bad things that they do under your watch. Murtala did not punish or sanction any of his men. So that means that he tacitly approved it. That's the way it works in the military. Always check your history before you write. Or ask somebody that knows.

There is Itsekiri. There is Ijaw. There is Urhobo. There is Isoko. There is Igbo, etc. So are many other languages and dialects spoken in Delta. There are even some mix or a trace of Yoruba dialect spoken in some areas there.
Try to learn a little history and geography about a state before you make such a comment like that.

When you are calling for soldiers or police to execute either alleged law-breakers or criminals, you have to be careful what you wish for.
In any "civilized" country or society, no matter what the crime the person is alleged to have committed, as long as he is willing to surrender to the authorities, by law, the law enforcement authorities are expected to arrest this person, lock him or her up in detention, then take them to court to be arraigned and decided in front of a judge or jury, who will try and sentence them accordingly or as the law dictates. You cannot say that you are in favour of the law on one hand but then on the other hand, you are encouraging armed officers to practice what simply amounts to the act of "extra-judicial" killing by becoming the judge, the jury, and the executioner. You cannot sanction law enforcement to eliminate ALL alleged criminals on sight! Police and Army are NOT always right. According to the law, it does not matter how terrible a crime one is alleged to have committed, every citizen (no matter how bad) still deserves their own day in court. That is the nature of the law! And whether we like it or not, we have to abide by it, not only when we choose to do so but as a matter of fact, at all times!

You all know that it happens every time when some unlucky innocent Nigerian or Nigerians are wrongly accused of crimes that they did not commit and are either killed, burned or lynched to death on the spot, by some angry neighbourhood mobs before police show up. And later, some of these people are found to be some totally innocent students who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. But then, it is too late, and the mob of killers are never charged with murder or any crime because no one will fess up. And even when they speak up, nothing is done. If you want your country to be regarded as a civilized country, then you cannot encourage people to practice jungle type of justice.

Don't get me wrong. I know that BH terrorists are "war criminals" and cold-blooded imbeciles and I want to see their end too. Just like you, I don't like them. But the law is the law, and we cannot choose to enforce the law in a selective manner or permit vigilantism, regardless of the level or egregiousness of the alleged crime. Therefore, we have to whenever and wherever it is possible, arrest them first, detain them and then we charge and prosecute them to the full extent of the law. Otherwise, Nigeria will become just like another totally "lawless" country like Somalia, Iraq, Syria or Libya i.e. a . Some people think that Nigeria is a lawless country already. It is wrong to just kill them on the spot.

You cannot eat your cake and get to keep it at the same time too. So ask yourselves what do you really want? Do you want your Area Boys and the local watchmen always taking the law into their hands and simply burning and executing alleged thieves and criminals on the spot before the police are called or before the alleged criminals are arrested, detained and tried in a court of law and found guilty. Some of you might say that it's not a big deal, but let me tell you, if even one innocent person (only) is mistakenly executed by either the police, the army or area vigilantes, then even that one innocent person will have been one too many people. We all have a responsibility to obey the law - criminals and non-criminals alike. You cannot enforce the law by breaking yet another law, in the process!

Let us give credit where credit is due. Let's call a spade a spade.
