Caseless:Bro, you're not current o Akume has accepted to be Lawan's deputy since at least 3 weeks ago! Lawan is Tinubu's candidate since at least 3 weeks ago |
Chiaka:Oga, without Tinubu's machinery, Buhari would not have won SW. Get that. Theye were the one that created the visibility. How many Buhari posters and banners did you see in the SW in 2011? |
fkaz:Oga, if Tinubu is not jittery, he won't beg that other former governors prevail on Saraki to drop his ambition. He would threaten to meet him on the field. This is looking like a lost battle for Tinubu. And what they did against Mulikat Akande in 2011 is now set to happen against them. |
Tinubu should select his wars. Wanting to have hands in everything can be the beginning of his fall. This is looking like a lost war and it may be the beginning of his demystification. |
Fynestboi:JarusHub Career Consulting is offering to give the following: 1, Hard copy of the book "The Road to Victoria Island" written by myself to the debaters of the winning school. 2, Soft copy (ebook version) to be given to each debater of second placed team. 3, Best debater to be invited to JarusHub Networking Event - an avenue to meet and dine with some Lagos professionals in a top restaurant in Lagos (We do every last Saturday of every month, and he's free to choose the month he wants: June to December 2015). |
I feel Buhari should return the money to the woman |
CHANGE IN AIRPORTS - overwork ![]() |
bukatyne:They don't want that kind of patronage. |
What a joke of a performance! |
I don't have any question but let me make my comments. I must confess I'm not very impressed with the presentation of the 3 debaters. Too many unpardonable grammatical errors, concord mismatch. I believe you all should take time to edit your posts well next time. If this was an award, I would have advised the organisers to keep the award and not declare winner. However, this being a multi-stage competition, a winner must emerge. That is the reason I will send the scores to the coordinators. |

Judge Jarus taking seat |
Still on our JARUSHUB case study, the ratio of our rent to total investment remains high at 50% now because we have spent less on the other key component of the mix - publicity. We had some funds, we were faced with option of spending it on office or publicity. We ranked our priority and realized we should set up an office first, because if we spend 1m on publicity, people will be eager to know where are these people, Hope they are not scam etc. In Nigeria people still have some skepticism about online patronage except you're a well established brand like Jumia or Konga or Nairaland. If you spend money to advertise your offerings, where will people come for your services? Our model is different from hotels.ng or jobberman, because their services are strictly online, unlike us that have products that require physically meeting clients. That is why office is critical to us at this phase. |
lordhugo:We never thought of and we would never consider VI. VI is not for startups, but already well established companies. I think Yaba, Surulere and Ikeja are ok for startups, but I think Yaba is the best for many reasons - it is closer to both Island and mainland, somehow central, a large concentration of middle class, hub of higher institutions (UNILAG, YABATECH, FCE etc). Plus there is location economies due to its closeness to many other startups. Mark's Hotels.ng is there, Insidify is there, Jobmag is there etc. I can easily walk into any of them to have a chat with the founders and strike networking relationship etc See the list of notable startups in Yaba according to Wikipedia Braintem.org 500 Shops Autobox Asa Beat Traffik Budgit Church+ Efiko Hotels.ng Jobs in Nigeria Kaymu Konga Meditell Insidify Passnownow PushCV Prep Class PrivateProperty.com.ng Prowork Talking Bookz Traclist Truppr VacantBoards Wecyclers Tutor Washist.com Waracake.com Wayopedia Photographers in Nigeria http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yabacon_Valley So I don't think it's a coincidence. |
LordMecuzy:What is your career plan? |
lordhugo:Thanks for your comments. But I do disagree with you both. And I think it's because you don't understand the business we're into. We never had office until now. We just floated around. Meeting clients in restaurants, etc. Remember I said it's a career consulting startup. Most of our flagship services were those that can be done without the clients having to see us physically, e.g CV writing, sale of books, etc. Now, when we decided to introduce a new set of services, most notably interview preparation and Career Academy, there was no way we could have done that without an office. For interview prep, it has to be physical. You can't do that by email or over the phone. You need a place to meet your client for that and it doesn't speak well that you meet an interview client in a restaurant. Our career academy also involves physical presence as it is a classroom situation. There is the option of renting halls of hotels etc, but that's actually more expensive than renting an office. Plus, we also got an employee to do the running around and he needs an office to report. Hence, our decision to open an office. And that has cost us close to N1m. Now, our next focus is publicity, massive online and offline publicity but we are lean on finances now. So we're taking it slowly. |
Hi Mark, Do you mind sharing your turnover figure (or rough approximation) in the last 3 years? Have you broken even? Do you have some entrepreneurship and startup websites/blogs that you can recommend? Currently, I read Entrepreneur.com and Forbes. |
Don1Dee:One of my writers, who holds a PhD and works in Shell Houston, reduced the frequency of contribution because of poor engagement by readers. I more or less propped him to continue writing. Imagine, a foreign professor from Germany once contacted him for an article he wrote. The man disagreed with a couple of points he made in the article and sent a lengthy email for robust engagement with my guy. My friend was impressed and didn't know his readership traveled that far. Yet, people here, who are our major target audience, hardly bother to read talkless of commenting. I have lost a couple of other fine contributors due to lack of comment/engagement on their articles. It is discouraging. |
Simple: tech awareness is still low in Nigeria. As a career blogger, I also noticed that people don't comment on articles that are academic and technical. Many of the guys that contribute to my blog got discouraged from writing because of low engagement their articles attract. Another thing I noticed: In Nigeria, people see bloggers as no-do-gooders. They just don't want to associate with blog. Also, people here are usually uncomfortable to comment on blogs. I was surprised recently, when after reading an article a contributor to my blog wrote on James Lafferty, former CEO of CocaCola West Africa, BAT etc, the man himself showed up (God knows how he saw the article - maybe through Google alert) and personally commented. I can't imagine a Nigerian Bank MD commenting on a blog! |
markessien:Do you think someone that is not an IT geek, or that doesn't know how to code can succeed as internet entrepreneur? |
Our office is also at Alagomeji in Yaba. I see majority of Nigerian startups prefer their offices in Yaba, now styled Silicon valley of Nigeria. |
Good to see you here, Mark. I have read about you and your startup in the last two years and I'm impressed. I also recently floated a startup, JarusHub, a career consulting startup. I got three partners, and I the lead partner. We have put close to N2m ($10k) to it to date (we rented and furnished our office for close to N1m). We prefer to grow organically, but we don't mind external funding as our expansion drive is limited by finances now. What is your experience sourcing fund? What is your revenue model? |

With office in Yaba, Lagos, the firm is the first in Nigeria to render interview coaching services. So we are the market leader in this field that is still new to Nigeria, while it is already advanced in other countries (Example: http://www.interviewgold.com/#a_aid=wiki1908&a_bid=106f4753) OUR RECORDS We have prepared candidates for interviews of top companies like PwC, KPMG, Oando, NNPC to mention only a few, and our success rate is encouraging as a good percentage of candidates we prepared aced the interviews/assessment centers. Some testimonies: Hi JarusHub,A good number of the candidates we prepared for the recently concluded Oando Assessment Center also aced the exercise and got to final stage (competency-based interview) which result they are still expecting. We are hopeful that they will made that too. OUR STRENGHT While we are home and dry on interviews in every sector of Nigerian economy, our biggest strength is actually the oil and gas industry as our Chief Coach has more than 7 years experience in this industry, and knows the industry like the back of his palms. Our deep network, which we deploy in researching the recruitment process of companies, is another major strength. HOW DOES THIS NLNG ASSESSMENT WORK? Simple: everything you will be required to do on that day will be practiced with you! We have prepared samples of group tasks, case studies, analytical presentations etc, which you will work with. For group work, you will be divided into groups and do group tasks. We will start by teaching the tips in each stage, and thereafter we will divide you into groups and watch you do group tasks, and we will assess you and give you feedback on areas you need to improve on, etc. There will also be mock interview with you and you will be corrected on areas that need working on. There will also mock presentations. In short, it's just a rehearsal of what you will do in this stage. DOES IT GUARANTEE SUCCESS? We wish we could say yes, but unfortunately, we can't. But what we know is you will have value for your consideration. The success rate so far of people we coached is encouraging. In actual fact, we've never coached anyone for companies like PwC and KPMG and the person failed. The only person we have prepared for NNPC so far also passed. We wish to have a decent success rate in this NLNG too. WHAT THE ARE THE ADVANTAGES? Getting familiar with how assessment center works Improving your confidence Getting familiar (and working with) with people that may end up as your team members in the real NLNG assessment Again, it's like a mock exam. We all know the merits of mock exams. FEE N5000. And that's actually cheap. In advanced countries where this kind of service is common, people pay as much as $330 (N66,000). See an example here (http://300financegurus.com/coaching-page/) |

prelinctus:I wish. But far from that. Our PH and Abuja sessions will barely cover cost of flight and hotel. And we paid close to 1m to rent an office in Lagos! |
