Good Day Sir, it's great to meet you on this platform.

1. Please what professional course can you recommend for an Economics graduate that is not interested in auditing and tax.

2. In your opinion, are online certificates (e.g.: from Coursera) attractive to prospective employers.

Thank you cheesy
1, Economics is not a professional course, like accounting. Law etc. It is an academic/research-based field. That is why a good number of economics grads go ahead to write professional exams of other fields.

If you don't want to write ICAN/ACCA that will make you an accountant or tax professional, other professional certifications an economics graduate can go for include CIS (stockbrokers), CFA (global financial analyst) etc. That is if you must go for professional certificates.

If not, get Msc Economics and try financial institutions, locally or globally; or get a good MBA and become an investment banker.

Read these old article I wrote on these:

CAREER OPTIONS FOR ECONOMICS GRADUATES

CAREER CHOICES FOR ECONOMICS GRADUATE IN AN OIL & GAS COMPANY
http://www.jarushub.com/career-choices-for-economics-graduate-in-an-oil-gas-company/

2, I don't know much about online courses and I'm not sure Nigerian employers dwell much on them. However, the knowledge you gained there - hardly the certificate itself - can be useful to you.

You also get to work with the best brains in the industry, and have the best nights out on the island. Similarly to you, I also began doing ACCA just to keep myself busy after my boss retired.. I was a fresh graduate working as an administrative PA .. when the job came to an end I didn't know what to do next and didn't wanna just go do masters for the sake of it..

.. after much prayers and thinking I felt I should go the professional route hence why I enrolled for ACCA. It's all new to me though.. my degree wasn't based in finance.. I did management and marketing.

Hoping ACCA would open new doors for me like ICAN did for you. smiley
I studied Economics in school. I hated accounting like sh*t from secondary school through university.

I never for the life of me thought it was accounting job that will put food on my table.

I don't like being idle, and rather than waste my 1 year in a village in the North during my NYSC year, I decided to register for ICAN and keep myself busy.

I won prizes in the first stage I wrote and put it on my CV.

Fiam, it didn't take 2 weeks after NYSC before I got an accounting job, because of that. And all my 7 years post-NYSC career since then has been accounting job.

My brother has an Msc in economics. What courses can he take to be employable by the big4 please. And how long will each of them last?
All a big 4 needs are 2.1 in first degree in almost any course, below a certain age, usually 26. That's all you need. Then your ability will take you further in acing the tests and interviews.

There is no course your brother needs other than the above.

I have coached a number of people for interviews of Big 4 and they got the jobs: http://www.jarushub.com/interview-coaching/

But you need to do your own part first by getting their invite and passing their tests.

Really.. I'm currently doing ACCA but not planning to go into auditing nor tax. Just trying to become a fully qualified chartered accountant. I just hope I'm not wasting my time and resources. Hmm
If you "just want to", there is no problem in it. Like I earlier said, it is not compulsory except you're going into the aforementioned fields.

There is no harm in doing it just for the sake of doing it. It broadens your horizon, and makes you versatile, and it can make a difference in future job search.

Personally, I never set out to be an accountant, I started ICAN just to keep myself busy during my service year...but that was what got me job after NYSC, and I ended up being an accountant all my post-NYSC career. That was accidental. So you never can tell.

Yes, anyone can be foolish, anyone can act on rumour. That is why I can pardon the market women, not the Nairalanders here that, despite reading, still claim it for certainty.

Similar case in point:

In Katsina few days ago, one person 'misheard' news and went to town that Buhari's 5k welfare promise is about to kick off, and many people thronged to banks to collect their promised 5k welfare.

So anyone could have started the rumour, probably these semi-literate people that hear news upside down, and the traders act on it.

I'm surprised at the high level ignorance and lack of comprehension skills going on on this thread.

Like Market women, like some Nairalanders.

For God's sake, can't people take 2 minutes to read. Didn't people read the clarification by the Prison Director that no such plan exists, that the rumour is baseless, that movement of prisoners, if at all it will happen, is done after court conviction, and no single terrorist suspect has been convicted as all cases are still in courts.

Can someone please explain to me why people (especially girls) keep taking airplane food out of the aircraft? Aero, Medview, First nation and a couple other airlines always serve with some kind of 'take-awa' pack, but should people have to take these packs away out of the airplane like uncultured men, carrying them about the airplane like they are some party gifts? angry angry
I did that for the first time two weeks ago on my way back from PH to Lagos. My wife and children were also coming from Abuja to Lagos around same time, we were to meet at the Lagos airport, and ride home together in same taxi. I just reserved the pack for my daughter to give to her when we meet at the airport. I usually feel embarrassed meeting my children empty handed, so I decided to just keep the snacks for her, although she got her own on her flight from Abuja too.

EducationRe: Nairaland Interschool Debate Match Three: WINNER OAU by Jarus(m): 1:44pm On Jun 24, 2015
Epaul:
Despite the wrong way Nunushokoto and pseudonomer went about cavilling at what they felt was bias on the part of Jarus and came across as inanely snippy, i still think they have got quite a point worthy of looking into.
Jarus, no doubt, is a nifty piece of erudition matched with an intellectual finess who had been a judge in one of the debates i participated in. But given the fact that he is an OAU graduate, it is wrong for him to have presided over a cause that OAU was involved in. This is because no matter how fair Jarus might try to be, a reasonable man looking at it would contrarily think he was just selling the pup and was only playing the V.C in the legal case of GARBA V. UNIMAID where the V.C whose property was affected by a school rampage GARBA(a student) was involved in was made a Judge in a diciplinary panel that was to try GARBA. It was held the V.C couldn't have been fair and unbias. And that is as clear as white.
'Nemo judex in causa sua'(a man cannot be a judge in his own cause that is). That maxim is a rule against interest and bias.
If fairness must not only be done but seen to have been done, then Jarus being an OAU graduate judging the cause of OAU would certainly never be seen to have done fairness.
Apart from bias which the other party might snivel about, jarus in trying to prove he isn't bias in the cause of awarding scores might become unfair to OAU who otherwise might have had a better grading if graded by another umpire. Either ways Jarus finds himself in a tight position which sheerly derogates from his sense of good Judgement. You get the picture more if, for instance, you allow me, a DELSU undergraduate, to preside over a DELSU V. OAU match and DELSU was adjudged the winner. You helplessly might be tempted to think i was bias. And if you so fall into the temptation, you would be right and i would be less right even if i swear by heaven i wasn't bias.
Thus, in view of this, Jarus shouldn't be brook to be a Judge in a debate match involving OAU. Ditto for other judges who fall into the ambit. This will make for fairness.

To the funaab reps, move on. You win some. You lose some. That's why it is a game.
If i were a Judge, i still certainly would grade OAU better in this showing. Miracy and especially her team-mate put up a good one there.

Cc:
fynestboi
jarus
Ujsizzle
You made a good and reasonable point. I will excuse myself from judging debates involving OAU, going forward.

Interestingly, OAU might actually have been at the receiving end of my being overly careful not to be seen as biased. Wondering whether it is a co-incidence that all the OAU debates I judged (at least 5, since last year edition), they lost (by my scoring alone).

There is also the burden of expectation. I'm a proud grad of OAU, and I know the quality of the school, you therefore need to work very hard to impress me that you're from the same OAU I attended.

You may go through the inconvenience of having to explain to recruiters who look at your credentials in the course of hiring (some may suspect you had a criminal record, some may suspect you are attempting to use someone else's credentials), but I don't think it should pose serious challenge once you do newspaper change of name.

If you have a credential that shows your picture (e.g WAEC certificate from 2000), it may also make your case easy.
